Friendly family run hotel. Delicious freshly cooked breakfasts & the Sunday evening roast was amazing. I had a single room, they're always small, but had everything I needed including a hot shower. I particularly enjoyed the chiming of the church clock, so apt in a small historic town

My husband and I had such a lovely time at the Dunster Castle Hotel. Lisa and John, the owners, gave us a really warm welcome, and even put a birthday card in our room for my husband as it was his 40th birthday. The room itself was very classily decorated, as was the whole of the hotel but still kept a lovely warm and cosy feel to it. Everything was clean and the bed very comfortable. We had a very good breakfast the next morning too. Plenty to choose from and nothing was too much trouble. We will definitely be going back again.

Wonderful location for Dunster Castle. Sadly in our opinion not a hotel but more of a bed and breakfast as they only cook evening meals on two evenings a week. The owners do a good job but run the business almost entirely on their own apart from a bedroom cleaner and a kitchen assistant. The entrance to the rear car park is very awkward to negotiate if you have a larger car and parking outside is almost not on, particularly in busy periods. If you are used to hotel life, ordering drinks and food at anytime throughout the day or evening you may be disappointed, also there is no lift to the upper floor, this venue is not disabled friendly, there is also a very steep slope to and from the rear car park. In our opinion the star rating of this business is well out of date and gives the wrong impression.

This was our second visit the The Castle Hotel . Once again we were very ably looked after by John and Lisa . Our room suited our needs exactly , even a bit of a sea view !!! . If you are staying on a Sunday or a Monday , you really should book to dine there on the evening . Wholesome Sunday dinner style meals , excellent value for money . Walk Dunster if you want. Pay twice as much in one of those very posh places if you want . But better The Castle Hotel meals you will not . Once again , my wife and I were treated like old friends , but still with the professionalism, courtesy, and respect I'd expect as a paying customer. A wonderful venue for a short break . Thank you John and Lisa for your hard work and effort . Top job 👏

Wow, what a beautiful hotel. We stayed here for 3 nights and we were greeted with such a lovely warm welcome from Lisa the owner. The room was excellent and had everything you needed. Very spacious and grand. Breakfast was to die for. We had Johns famous fresh fruit salad with his homemade yogurt and we were in heaven. Food was so fresh and good portions. While we stayed there we had fresh milk, spring water and tea, coffee and biscuits everyday. Location was really beautiful, Dunster village was so quiet and chilled and everyone was so friendly. Can’t say enough about this hotel, we would definitely recommend it to everyone. We would stay there again in heart beat. Thanks

We stayed here for 5 nights after traveling down from Manchester for the Golden Retriever Experience. We really fell in love with the beautiful village of Dunster and our experience was made all the more perfect by Lisa and John. What a wonderful couple who made us feel welcome from the minute we checked in. You make your breakfast choices the night before and every morning it was made to order, fresh and lovely, always with a big smile from Lisa. We enjoyed the Sunday roast so much that we booked for Monday night too! Thank you so much to you both for such a memorable stay. We will definitely be back :)

Stopped off on our way back from Minehead late on Sunday evening and popped in to see if they were still serving food and they were. They gave us the last table and went out of their way to make my son a sausage and chips when it was only roasts as he’s super fussy which was brilliant. They also did the kids ice cream. To top it off the food for us was superb too! If we are ever in the area again I would 100% come back!

I did not stay here but attended a wedding where this hotel provided the bar. The barman for the evening, who I believe is this hotel’s owner, ran out of draught lager at 8pm (wedding was due to end at 11pm) and was then totally unprofessional when asked to resolve the issue. He got into a verbal altercation with the bride’s father over the matter, which he then continued the next morning, in his own hotel now (rather than the wedding venue), when the bride’s father was mid conversation with a wedding guest. Disgusting behaviour, I hope this man realises that there is a world outside of his enormous ego, although I’m doubtful. I would be very reluctant to stay in a hotel where the owner is so willing to abuse customers in order to distract from his own errors.

I stayed for 2 nights for a wedding, and I absolutely loved staying at this hotel - I chose it as it was in my budget and I'm so glad I did. From the moment I arrived, John and Lisa were wonderfully welcoming and made me feel right at home with everything I could possibly need. I was in a pretty, spacious attic room with a very comfortable bed and a view of the town (the hotel is right on the main street next to the beautiful Dunster Castle); I was able to fully relax in between going on walks up Grabbist Hill and to the beach. The restaurant was closed due to COVID, but John's cooked breakfast was delicious (he had a long list of dishes that could be made) and being able to choose my breakfast dishes the night before meant that I could be out and about at the exact time I needed. I would definitely stay here again with pleasure if I come back to Dunster!

The owners cannot do enough to make your stay a pleasure. I had to work and had problems with my signal and they offered for me to use the landline so I could complete my call. They're the nicest people ever! I wish they operated a resteraunt as well because I just know that if they did food it would be to die for. Rooms were clean and the bed was super comfortable. Incredible food, slightly underwhelming accommodation. I'd wholeheartedly recommend it for dinner, which is better than you might expect given the presentation of the menu and decor. The food itself is stellar, and I would go out of my way to eat there again, and the plating and service make it feel as special as it tastes. I might stay somewhere else though, as the furniture is a little tired, the décor bizarre and the hot water never quite hot enough. Bonus points for the smart TV, though, and it's good value for Dunster.

Having briefly escaped from the craziness of Butlins and a Grandson who had just been dumped by his girlfriend we came across this gem of a restaurant on a cold and windy afternoon during February half term. All three of us had the Roast dinner, puddings and coffee and unanimously agreed that it was one of the best if not the best meal we had ever had. The ambiance, friendly staff and peaceful environment just added to the perfect dining experience and the bill was also very reasonable. We headed off back to Butlins with a warm glow to watch the Little Mix tribute which due to our experience at the restaurant seemed a lot better than it probably was. Happy days indeed.

3 adults and 2 children, went in to get a bite to eat, after visiting Dunster Castle, as the sign outside said food served all day. Who I can only assume is the landlady watched us settle on a corner table, park pram out of the way, get high chair, take kids outdoor wear off... 10 minutes in, made our selections from the menu only to be told when going to the bar to order, that they are no longer serving food as they’ve been too busy in the day. Woman proceeded to argue with my mother in law and was extremely rude considering she’s running a business in HOSPITALITY... Had to wrap the kids back up, put baby back in the pram and navigate around the tables to get out... As we were leaving the table next to us had their food served??? Would not recommend at all.. this is the second bad experience we’ve had here where this same lady was extremely rude, there will not be a third. Would be nice to just inform us whilst watching us settle at the table and clearly read the menu, that food was no longer being served. There is absolutely no excuse for such an attitude towards potential customers. And before they try and fob this off as being an incorrect review like they have to other negative reviews - this is definitely for the Dunster Castle Hotel.

This was a gem of a place, we're so glad to have found. On an awful drive back from North Devon to Wiltshire, we abandoned the car and decided to break up the journey. Randomly selected, we phoned the receptionist and asked if there were any rooms available. She was able to match the price advertised by another company online, so we booked because of the competitive price. The room was clean and comfortable. Sherry in the room was a nice touch. We were too late to eat an evening meal in the restaurant, but a local pub were happy to find us a table instead. Next morning, the hotel breakfast was fine. Conveniently, we were able to leave the car in the carpark until 4.00pm on our check out day. Worked well for us, so I'd recommend!

We ate here three times for dinner and once for lunch during our week in Dunster. The gin selection is impressive. They take care over the garnishes and the Brockmanns with a fruit coulis was amazing. House wines were very good too. The menu is short but beautifully executed. Lamb was tender and perfect. Duck breast was fabulous. One evening each week they have a simpler menu and have a pub quiz or an open Mike. Even so the food was delicious and great value. It was pub quiz the week we were there and that was tremendous fun. They allow dogs in most of the bar but not in the carpeted bit so easy to get away from other people’s furry friends if you want to. Our big border collie was happy to be fed dog biscuits. We’ve been in Dunster for a few days. In the village, there are limited dining options. After a few days of heavier meals, we were in the mood for something on the lighter side. The Dunster Castle Hotel restaurant provided us with just that. We each had wraps, one was tuna, the other a vegetarian hummus wrap. Mine was the latter. Overall this was fine, served with a slaw and a small (just right size) of chips. I think the wrap would have benefited from a slightly zestier sauce, but overall I was satisfied with the meal. About 7 pounds a piece.

Called in for Sunday lunch during a coach trip. The two women in the pretty bar were friendly and welcoming. We initially went out to the garden (beware the steep steps). It was quite pretty, overlooking the church, but was much too hot, they need some umbrellas. Also it’s quite a long walk to the bar, carrying glasses. Ate in the front bar, we only wanted a snack and the chef kindly agreed. Ordered tuna jacket, served with crisps and chicken/sweetcorn soup. The soup was awful, a very small portion for £7.50 with one miniscule piece of chicken. It was flour, mixed with milk, chewy sweetcorn and a heap of carrots. This should have been described as cream of carrot/sweetcorn. The pea shoots were the only good thing about it. Complained but the waitress wasn’t interested. The roast lunches are probably very good but avoid the soup, especially if you hate carrots like me! They are dog friendly here and it is warm and cosy.

Spent a lovely morning exploring Dunster Castle and wandered into the village looking for a Sunday roast. What a find. Lovely welcoming staff and a cosy restaurant. The food was superb. All freshly cooked. Six vegetables, lovely roast potatoes, Yorkshire puddings, little jugs of extra gravy. Very generous portions and we enjoyed every mouthful. Real home from home. We also enjoyed desserts, summer pudding and date and ginger pudding. If we are ever in the area again, we shall be back. Thank you.

Fantastic pub, dog friendly, with a great range of tasty food, the staff are very friendly and helpful with place in pub to cool dog down, but allow us warmth.

What else can you say about an inn with 88 find behind the bar? Well sited on the high street and we were served fine food at lunchtime.

An absolute gem of a bed and breakfast. The rooms were very well decorated and a good size. Bathroom had large walk in shower. Absolutely spotless. Couldn't fault the roomscat all. Beds comfortable and a good night's sleep 😴 was had by all. Food down in the Pub was of a high standard and very tasty. Breakfast was 10/10 excellent. There was a good choice and all delicious. Would highly recommend and we would definitely stay again

I can’t exactly comment on the food because we were told to leave before we even got a menu. I booked (keyword: booked!) a table for my boyfriends birthday today (1/11/24) at 7:45 (I wanted to book it for 6 but was told 7:45 was the only time they had so I settled for it). When I told them my name the girl on the phone almost sounded like she was laughing, not sure why. Anyways, we drove up from Taunton as my boyfriend lives in Watchet and when we got to the restaurant we were greeted by full tables apart from one. We went up to the bar and said we had booked a table, however I did not see my name on the sheet of paper they had the bookings on, which was my first concern. The table we were given had to be wiped down (can’t fault that, from someone who used to work in hospitality when you’re busy it’s hard to keep track!), and then we were told the server needed to get cutlery, so I went to the bathroom. When I came back my boyfriend was sat with no menu. We sat for about 10 minutes until another server came over and said that we would have to leave and come back later as they had “double booked us” (in his words “it was difficult”) The only other time they had was 8:30, about half an hour- 45 minutes later. We left and went to Vladi’s which was absolutely amazing, we were given amazing service and free cheesecake for my boyfriends birthday! Anyways, I would steer clear of here, especially if you are booking for a busy time, as you will more likely be turned away from your table without even an apology.
