As we’d planned a visit to Highgrove we decided to stay in Whatley Manor as they had this restaurant, which we hadn’t previously visited. We both went for the a la carte option. It was a good choice. What made in more special was that my wife asked if they could offer a fish main course and the chef kindly offered to cook her turbot. Which is one of her absolute favourites. Big tick! As you’d expect the food was superbly cooked as well as beautifully presented. My wife said her turbot was sublime. I opted for the lobster mains. It was lobster three ways. It was just quite delightful. I’d say the best I’ve EVER had in all the Michelin starred restaurants we’ve been lucky enough to visit around the world (including in Maine). On top of that the sommelier also kindly went the extra mile with her advice, help and service. Overall it was a lovey, lovely experience.

Superb (though very expensive) experience! We enjoyed a leisurely fine dining evening at this wonderful restaurant while staying at its affiliated Whately Manor for six days. First, we gathered in the comfortable lounge for drinks and pre-meal amuse bouche and wine and menu review, then we had a brief visit to the kitchen to watch the team cook while we ate a second small appetizer, and finally we were seated in an initimate modern dining area with comfortable chairs, white table cloths, and muted music. Each of our three appropriately sized courses with selected pairings was extraordinary and bursting with flavor, and worth every penny. Service was perfect (kudos to Connor, the brilliant sommelier, who is actually 23 but looks 13, an amazing young man who knows his wines). A five course option was also available for larger appetites.

We visited The Dining Room on Thursday 22nd August 2024 to try out the new A la Carte menu option. If was absolutely first class in every way and a great additional option for those days when the Tasting Menu is just a bit too much. As always, the welcome was professional, warm and friendly as were the whole team throughout the evening. The kitchen experience is a lovely way to meet Ricki and his fabulous team. Absolutely fabulous all round and can't wait to return soon.

The dining room experience starts in the beautiful lounge area with drinks and amuse bouches and then continues with a short stop in the kitchen before being seated in the main dining area. This is a really fun way to kick off the evening and to see the kitchen team at work before starting the main meal. The food is absolutely delicious and in our opinion more at the level of 2 Michelin stars rather than 1. We paired it with a bottle of British Chardonnay which was recommended by the sommelier and a perfect choice. Service was excellent and really ensured that the evening was perfect.

Exceptional meal. I'm lucky enough to eat in some rather good places, and I can often remember the location and overall whether I enjoyed it or not ... but many of the specific dishes fade from the memory. I'm writing this review six weeks later and I can still remember the caviar trifle and the plum custard. Brilliant pieces of cookery! The room is also nice; simple and pared back but with comfortable seating. Our servers were superb; friendly, charming, knowledgeable, proud of their restaurant and eager to please. Truly, a meal to remember.

We experienced the tasting menu as part of our stay at Whatley Manor and were amazed from start to finish. A seamless journey from the initial welcome drinks in the lounge, before being taken through to see the impressive kitchen at work, before enjoying the rest of your meal in the dining room itself. Service is impeccable and every dish was outstanding, presented beautifully and accompanied by wonderful wine pairings. We enjoyed every moment and will hopefully be back again one day!

Tried the spa facility earlier this year so fancied another trip for same plus Michelin Dinner and overnight stay. So glad we did. The tasting menu was outstanding and delivered the WOW I'm sure all serious fine dining folk want to have when paying decent money. Such quality in flavours . Generous portions. Good ingredients. On top of that service was friendly, perfectly timed and we never felt rushed. A nice bonus to start off was a few Amuse Bouche in front of the kitchen staff hard at work . Wonderful to see the precision and team work. Then to wrap up at 1am in the bar over a G&T, we were so pleased to have an appearance from Ricki Weston himself. I wanted to compliment him on a brilliant meal. This really is worthy of being 2 Michelin Stars in our opinion.

Really lovely evening and amazing food. Staff were really attentive, well informed, friendly and extremely accommodating. Was really interesting to have one of the courses in the kitchen to see them in the real environment Food was tasty and brilliantly presented We had the pairing wines and when we weren’t keen on one of them we we’re offered alternatives without any issue. Twice on one occasion. So good and amendable. Doesn’t happen in some restaurants Not cheap but was really enjoyable

We visited the Dinning Room to experience their vast tasting menu and must say what an experience. It was great to meet and chat with head chef Ricki Weston to to observe his very calm and coordinated kitchen in operation. All 12 or so courses were exquisite and the presentation and service of them was all a 'theatre'. The only slight downside was the expensive cost of the the 'pre drinks' £19 for a gin and tonic !. All the staff were extremely courteous, knowledgeable and made the evening complete. For a Special Occassion we can't rate this place highly enough and would certainly recommend it for couples looking for that Michelin Star dinning experience.

We went to The Dining Room for my birthday last week. Off the scale brilliant. Food to die for. We don’t have enough words for how good it was. The only way I can describe it adequately is to say it is pure artistry, skill and passion playing out on every plate and in every mouthful. Kudos to Ricki and the whole team for what you have created and the experience you give your diners. It’s extraordinary. We’re not gourmets but we celebrate wonderful food when we experience it, and The Dining Room is among the very best there is. The service is exceptional - like everything at Whatley, it’s top quality while warm and welcoming. They make everyone feel special and you relax instantly. And that can’t be said of all restaurants of this quality - they really do put the diner, and your enjoyment of the food (and excellent wine list) at the heart of it. For anyone who enjoys fine dining in beautiful surroundings and exceptional service, we’d always recommend The Dining Room and Whatley Manor. We would also add that given the quality of the whole experience, and knowing how costs have increased massively in this industry in the past year or so, we felt the price was well worth it and appropriate. Enough from us - it’s a special place.

Having lost their second star, the Dining Room's prices singularly fail to reflect this demotion. At £175pp this equates with some of the finest restaurants in the land, but the anticipated quality and finesse is distinctly lacking. Having dined in all but one of the 3 star restaurants in the UK I do feel this judgement of quality and value to be fair and analytical. The Dining Room's proclamation of a "7 course tasting menu" is misleading as the various little extras that one normally receives gratis on a 5 course menu - canapes, amuse-bouches, petits fours - are (perhaps cynically?) included here as actual named courses. Ignoring subjective personal taste, of the seven "courses" three were truly delightful and faultless - brilliantly conceived, prepared and presented. The remainder ranged from pretty bland and unremarkable to incompetently ill-balanced and with poorly matched component flavours. The brief trip to the kitchen for the first "course" (most would call canapes) is a little gimmicky, but possibly interesting for those unfamiliar with the workings of a Michelin Star establishment. On the plus side: - The wine list is comprehensive and sensibly priced with availability to suit most pockets. - Service throughout is, from the moment of arrival, as one should expect at this level, attentive, courteous, efficient and professional. - The ambience and quality "feel" of the place are elegant and prestigious. However for those not staying overnight, having received the bill for the meal itself one is left feeling that one has paid heavily towards the excellent hotel and grounds (reviewed separately) rather than the just the meal. In summary the restaurant itself is overpriced by at least 25% and seems to have forgotten it is no longer a two star establishment.

We had a fantastic meal in the Dining Room to celebrate my husband’s birthday. The front of house staff and kitchen team were friendly and attentive. We thoroughly enjoyed our kitchen experience, watching the chefs perfect the dishes and meeting the head chef was a real pleasure. Each course we had was so flavoursome and beautifully presented - like art on a plate! The Dining Room deserves its one Michelin Star and we are sure it will achieve 2 stars in the future. Thank you to everyone for making our special occasion so memorable.

I wasn’t going to make this review as I genuinely enjoyed my stay at the hotel but I thought people need to be made aware of how poor the food in the restaurant is. Restaurant aside, the hotel and its grounds are beautiful and the staff are very friendly and helpful. The rooms are large and the rates per night are agreeable for the product you get. However, what is not acceptable is the food being served in the dining room, I’m not exactly sure what Michelin were thinking as this restaurant utterly discredits the guide. I’m increasingly losing faith in the UK guide as the inspectors evidently don’t know what they’re talking about anymore. First of all the cost of the tasting menu is comical. A one Michelin starred restaurant charging three star prices is a joke and considering how bad the food being served is, this is quite frankly out of order. £175 is similar to what you’d pay at Clare Smyth, Claude Bosi or Hélène Darroze, which are some of the best restaurants in the country and closest to what you’d encounter in France. Here there’s no real luxury ingredients and the execution of the dishes are just poor and flavours badly judged. Everything was forgettable, minuscule in portion, a series of amuse bouche than meal. Someone in my party was served some kind of vegetable, which was grilled and this was the restaurant’s excuse for a vegetarian menu, as if this is what vegetarians eat. This restaurant is not vegetarian friendly whatsoever, you will be totally disregarded. The “highlight” of the meal was some awful chocolate desert served with what tasted like vinegar and a chocolate dusted twig of some kind of herb. I had to pick the herb out of my mouth as this was akin to chewing on a branch from a tree. Disgusting to say the least. The canapés in the kitchen, for me, was just utterly pretentious and try hard. Standing there watching the kitchen team hard at work while we wait to be served was just awkward. The dining room was very small and the décor was like stepping back in time to an early 2000s living room… not stylish at all and not in keeping with the rest of the hotel. Interior designer is blind or retired long ago. The staff were attentive and friendly enough, though the pace of the meal was a joke, however, yet again, this was down to the kitchen. It seemed like forever to be served tiny underwhelming dishes and towards the end of the meal I was getting quite frustrated and wanted to leave and retire back to my room. When the meal did end and we had coffee, we weren’t even served petit fours for £175… thank the lord in heaven for the bread is all I can say. On another note, when we were served breakfast the next day, the joke continued. For some reason we were given half a mushroom and half a black pudding… the tiny portions are even applied to breakfast in the morning. The vegetarian breakfast also had half a mushroom despite having less items on the plate. This for me was just downright offensive and a real lack of attention to detail. Whatley Manor is a very beautiful hotel with lovely grounds and nice staff, however its restaurant or kitchen as a whole is a serious cause for concern and really ruins the whole experience and stops the hotel from being a truly top class establishment. The restaurant is holding the hotel back and personally I think Michelin need to come back and make a review with a clear head. This review would’ve been a 1/5 if it wasn’t for the staff who actually earned their service charge for being attentive and professional. Cannot recommend this restaurant at all until something is done about the kitchen. What a shame, what a waste…

It was with a degree of trepidation, mixed with anticipation that I approached our visit to Whately Manor . Hearing there was a new chef I was worried the food would be a disappointment . It was absolutely not the case .From the first dish celebrating the humble beetroot and parsnip , through a range of delightful small bites , onto a lamb dish with a sauce so good (I was forced to use a small remaining piece of bread to mop it up ) , to the most delightful deserts it was delicious . The flavours both delicate and packing a punch were fresh , original and very British and whilst enjoying an eclectic range of food and flavours I loved the apparent simplicity of complex dishes. I wish the team success and have to say the service was fantastic .

This is a top class experience. Starting off with. drink in the lovely cozy yet large lounge, you read the tasting menu which like many top class restaurants is the only menu on offer. Allergies and preferences dealt with the food starts with lovely canapes and charcuterie from the local farm. The experience continues with a visit to the kitchen where we received a very nice welcome from the Head Chef Ricki Weston, an obvious asset to the kitchen, and also three more small dishes. Here begins the realisation of the eastern influences in the dishes. Then through to the nice dining room, with three separate rooms. Our only negative was we thought it was a bit bright and a dimmer would help. Each dish was lovely, clam with trout roe, lovely sourdough, chorizo risotto excellent as were the tortellini and the lobster. I was getting a little full as the beef was delivered but my partner cleaned the plate. Then onto desserts that there is always room for, each of them excellent. Service was both good and friendly, just as we like it. This is a top class place with a top class tasting menu from a top class kitchen

We ate there at end-November. The food was lovely, however service was not par with a Michelin starred restaurant, in fact it was very poor for any restaurant... We were served wine that we did not order and ended up paying more for it.We wanted to have matching wines with our dinner. In their menu, there are 3 tiers of matching wines. We ordered the cheapest option (Journey), however after dinner, when we received the bill, were told that we had been served the most expensive option (Prestige). In a Michelin starred restaurant, there should not be any mix-up in the order. This is very very bad itself, however this is not the only thing...Their menu does not have the list of wines for each matching wine option. And they never give you the list as a print-out during dinner (in fact I had to ask them to email the list to me so that I know what we drank that day). Therefore we could not notice that we were not being served our order but there was a mix-up and we were being served Prestige — that is until we saw the final bill. The Sommelier brought all the wines in glasses, i.e. the wine was already poured into glasses when he brought them to our table and we did not see any single wine bottle. This must be the first time that I have experienced anything like this (that unfortunately includes our local pub). Normally all the other Sommeliers show people the bottle when they explain/talk about the wine. Normally they also pour the wine at the table.I find it very sad that we apparently drank £210 worth of Prestige wines (per person), including, according to the menu “one or two truly iconic wines”, but yet have not seen the bottle of any single one of them. This was so disappointing... I did not want to eat pigeon, so it was changed to fish. So the matching wine was changed too.. We were told that my husband who ate pigeon had Sassicaia, while my matching wine was a Californian Chardonnay. According to the wine menu published on Whatley Manor’s website, the cheapest Sassicaia was £400, while the most expensive Californian Chardonnay was £185. And I do not think that what I had was the most expensive one... Yet when we received the bill, we were both charged £210... This was so unprofessional. Why am I supposed to pay the same amount for a cheaper wine? When we told these to the restaurant manager/supervisor, he changed the bill to one Prestige wine flight (£210) and one Journey (£75). So, we still paid £135 more compared to what we had ordered (two Journeys), did not see the list of wines, did not see any single wine bottle, none of them was poured at our table... This is not what I am expecting in a restaurant. There are much better and more professional restaurants at that price level. This one was definitely not worth it.

Special Afternoon tea with friends. It is a beautiful place set in lovely gardens. Afternoon tea was good but we were the only ones in the restaurant so there was no atmosphere, it might have been nicer to be moved into the lounge. Also it was a rainy October day and it would have been lovely if the fire was lit.

We booked to stay at Whatley Manor for our tenth wedding anniversary - and decided to tag on the Michelin star experience at The Dining Room. I had thought it might be a nice meal but it was the hotel and spa we had come for....what we found was that the meal dominated the weekend and was the real highlight of our trip.

I enjoyed afternoon tea with a family group of eleven with an age difference (oldest/youngest) of 80 years. All were pleased with the sandwiches and cakes including two who requested vegetarian options. We were offered a choice of tea blends plus coffee and cocoa options. There was plenty to tuck in to and we were offered replenishments which we declined. In fact we asked for doggy bags (boxes; this is WM after all) to take home the yummy scones. Just two minor issues. I was treating the family and had ordered the full AT prior to our visit. The waiter presented everyone with a menu/price list when we sat down. I'd prefer to keep prices out of it when I'm treating plus most people know what they're getting. We were all sat in an open area which is terrific at Christmas with the fire and tree but is a bit of draught magnet in summer. Happily, after requests the staff did close the offending doors. I should say the staff at WM are always very attentive and a pleasure to deal with. All in all WM is a super place to hang out and the gardens are a real treat. Anyone for croquet?!

Was given a table in the dining room overlooking the gardens. Lovely atmosphere. Was a moment when a waitress dropped someone else's afternoon tea, but this didn't impact on our enjoyment. Was also nice walking round the gardens of the hotel afterwards.

We had the tasting menu on Friday evening (the third time I'd tried it!) and it didn't disappoint in any way. Great idea to have the first three courses in the kitchen so you can meet the team and see how tightly they work. The food is extraordinarily well balanced and arrives, as if by magic, at just the point when you think mmm I think I'm ready for the next course. Amazing flavours in every single dish that left us enjoying guessing what ingredients had gone into it. Thoroughly recommended. We also had lunch the next day in Grey's Brasserie - a fantastically delicious vegetarian endive and artichoke dish. Oh and breakfast was very good too!!

The choice of teas was excellent with a very good selection of sandwiches and cakes.

Such a well thought out managed experience. From the charcuterie in the lounge through to the courses served in the calm & efficient kitchen (it was like watching a well oiled machine) and finally being seated in the elegant and understated dining room, this was a feast for all the senses! The food was inventive with clever Asian influences and dishes that were so well balanced - in particular the risotto. The pork jus with the tortellini was intense and the buerre blanc with yeast accompanying the salmon . was just sublime. Niall Keating is an amazing talent! We went for the wine flight and the same amount of care and attention had been put into these. We found the staff friendly, knowledgeable and very efficient. We will be back , when we’ve saved up - well worth the price tag though!

A wonderful meal with lovely touches where you visit and speak to the young chefs in the kitchen and taste their particular dishes, all overseen by the brilliantly talented Niall Keating.

This was a charity dinner arranged by Whatley Manor in support of Hospitality Action, a charity that works to support all those who work or have worked in the hospitality industry and find themselves for whatever reason in difficulty. The logistics to make this event happen seem to have been complex but Whatley managed to assemble Christian Bau (3 Stars) from Germany, Brett Graham (2 Stars) from the Ledbury in London, Mark Birchall (2 Stars) from Moor Hall in Lancashire, and of course their own Niall Keating (1 Star). With a total of 8 Michelin stars working together we expected something rather good and the result was indeed exceptional. The individual dishes were all delectable, as per the comments on the photos, but it was also clear that the overall menu had been designed to be harmonious; each dish followed naturally from the one before and there was a lovely variety of texture and taste, complexity and simplicity. And clearly all four teams had worked together to get the dishes assembled and across the pass in perfect shape. It was just a sublime experience. Of the four, we only got to speak to Niall and Christian in the kitchen afterwards and I hope we were able adequately to convey our pleasure at sampling the results of what must have been an intense few hours for them. But now I'd like to congratulate all four chefs, and their teams, on what was definitely a job well done. And the rest of the restaurant staff were as efficient and friendly as always. It was a lovely evening, in support of a great cause, and we'll definitely be back before too long to sample some more of Niall's 'regular' cooking.

Last week we had the pleasure to celebrate a Birthday and our last day of the holidays at Whatley Manor. It already started at our arrival at this beautiful place and having the chance to enjoy our Aperitif in the lovely gardens was great. We also loved the concept of having our dinner at 3 different settings, starting in the garden to be followed in the kitchen and then moving on to the dining room itself. As for the tasting menu, after every dish we thought that couldn’t be topped but how wrong we were, the salmon with the beurre blanc was to die for and the Wagyu beef just melted in your mouth. A very big thank you to the Chef Niall Keating and the whole staff at the Dining Room you made our evening a real celebration and we felt very well looked after. We also had a very lovely chat with Sue, the manager of Whatley Manor, it is not often, that you have a visit of the manager at your table. We will for sure be back on our next holidays to the beautiful Cotswolds and are already looking forward to it.

It’s insane to think this only has 1 Michelin Star?! Surely it’s only a matter of time before it gets another. This was my second visit to Whatley Manor, the first being November 2017 for my birthday. I didn’t think that this occasion could top that but it most definitely did. The service was out of this world. The restaurant manager took the time to come and chat to us on a couple of occasions and she made us feel so welcome and special. Whatley Manor is a spectacular place and the restaurant mirrors it. As for the food? Well let me tell you, Niall Keating is set for great things. Surely a second star is just around the corner and sky is the limit for this forward thinking chef who’s food is up there with the very best establishments in the United Kingdom.

On a busy chilly Tuesday afternoon, opted for lunch, solo, as I am disabled and live alone, and therefore am unable to cook a meal for myself. Being a market day, I knew my chances of finding a free table without a reservation were slim, especially when I arrived to find Club Ladies-Who-Lunch were out in force. However Alex, the excellent Maitre D', who initially turned me away, called me back to tell me a couple were leaving shortly, and he would get their table cleaned up ready for my use very shortly. He must have recognised me from previous visits. A great lunch , where I was well looked after by my server, Charlie, making for a much appreciated visit. Good food, good prices, and a warm ambience. Worth recommending. Thanks, Alex and Charlie.
