The pub has a lovely atmosphere which is very cozy. The staff are great and quick. Definitely recommend.

This is not a Sunday roast guys. The potatoes are just boiled. That's not a roast potato. Where is the crisp on that? The parsnips look bland but taste okay. Where was the carrots? The stuffing is just dough again no colourisation or crisp on it nore the coli cheese. The tenderstem was okay actually. Also the yorkie was adequate, i think there was too much egg in the mix more than there should be. Only has a small pot of gravy that comes with it so ask for extra if you like that. Overall disappointed at that roast. Honestly i could of paid a fraction of the price and the tesco one would of been better. yes i'm a chef too. Avoid Sunday roasts here until they have got better at it. Not recommended that was a 1.5 out of 10. They charge £4 for sides too. Try doing all the trimmings but reasonable. The plate felt naked without some of them trimmings. Honestly it broke my english Sunday tradition heart eating it. And i really do hesitate leaving reviews like this. But me being 11 years as a chef. I had to say something, i was upset. If there is something you have to get right in england on a Sunday. It's a roast! They did give me a free drink on the house though!.

Great staff interesting place good selection of beers

So I’m traveling w my wife this past week to England and we decided to take the trip away from London and go west. We started at Oxford and it has a pretty busy atmosphere. I wanted to try some old school British food and what best place to try than in an old pub setting? I found The Crown which is part of the whole Nicholson pubs company which they own The Chequers as well. We actually went to The Chequers but their food service already closed so we went to The Crown. When we got there we asked if there is still food service and they told us we only have 5 minutes to order and had to rush to get our order in before they close. So we did and decided to get their Ocean fish and chips and the Steak and Ale pie. Total bill was £37 plus 10% service charge ($54.91 US) We sat by the right side of the entrance near the bathroom and all we can smell was the lemon ammonia cleaner coming through the doors and as people pass by and opens the door the smell gets much stronger. Luckily a table away from the bathroom opened up so we decided to relocate just as the food arrived. So based on the photos it doesn’t look bad.. only thing that really threw me off was the “breaded scampi” which is basically just fried breaded shrimp. However the breading was pretty thick and there’s gotta be micro shrimp inside.. lol the mushy peas is basically what it is.. mushy peas, the fries are underwhelming and soft.. should’ve called it mushy chips, and the fish.. the main piece, was dry, flaky like cardboard. And the pie, it looks good but as I tried to dig in I basically get a very thick and dry crust, lack of meat and sauce, but at least the sauce in the cup helped because I needed all the sauce I can get! I even poured the sauce to the fish but it’s really a lost cause. The broccoli stem was just plain steam broccoli but the carrots and mash were descent.. :) I wish I can say good things as I like the old pub vibe, maybe it’s because we came in late and they were about to close and the kitchen was not happy to serve us, but hey I don’t know. This was our experience and hopefully it will be better for others in the future.

I visited this pub today with my American friend. We visited Oxford, walked around the beautiful city and enjoyed the architecture. We were both hungry, saw this pub and as my friend is from America and never experienced pub food but heard so much about it we decided to give it a go. The pub is is a good location but was utterly disappointing. My friend nachos were hard and stale and my fries also tasted stale and dry. Also the pepsi provided had a funny taste , our waiter wasn't very pleasant either and we found the food overpriced for what it was. My American friend had her first British pub experience and was not impressed

The roast beef Sunday dinner was really tasty and cooked well, the potatoes could have done with longer in the oven but were still lovely. The pub was small pub with not many tables spare so would advise booking. Reasonable priced and in an ideal location.

Been back twice now and I have to say the food has been excellent all three times. Today was there fish and chips, all I'll say is I'm having that again, it was delicious - super crispy batter, chips spot on too. Meet an old friend here today for lunch. The perfect place, good character and atmosphere but not noisy, food was excellent as the staff were friendly. I'd have no hesitation in returning.

Top quality pub with a great selection of beer and chairs. I love the chairs in particular they really do their jobs. If you’re looking for a great pub with good chairs then this is the place.

Booked a table for two.Had to move table around as no room to swing a cat.Table planning not great.Food was nice though.Staff a few stood around.Glass with cutlery was quite loudly put on our table.I got the impression that staff member not too happy.

Very rude staff even though we were friendly. They clearly didn't like tourists which affected the atmosphere enormously. Definitely won't come back here...

Bar staff is not kind at ALL (yesterday). When working at a pub this is def not the behaviour customers are waiting for. Do better.

I visit this pub on occasion, usually for a couple of casual drinks. It's a nice venue with seating inside and in the outdoor courtyard. The premise isn't huge so there's limited seating both inside and out. Ideally located right in the city centre, it often gets busy,but it's a good place to go if you're lucky enough to find a table. The range of drinks is ok. I'm typically a craft beer / IPA drinker and they had enough to choose from for my tastes. This pub is part of the Nicholson's pub chain, and therefore is known for their pies. The meal I had here (fish and chips) was tasty, well portioned and came out in good time. The pies looked good too. Unfortunately, the poor part of the review comes entirely from the service. I was visiting as part of a group - a family outing to celebrate a birthday. We had made a large booking 9 adults and a baby on a rainy Saturday afternoon. Upon prompt arrival, we could see that they were busy. Busy enough that they'd decided to ignore our booking and had allowed several smaller groups to take our reserved tables and order their own food. The pub was full and there were no other tables available at the time. One barman in particular was both unhelpful and rude. He simply threw his hands up in the air and told us we couldn't be seated. Questioning this, we proposed that they vacate other tables where people were not eating and had no reservation. Without even considering this he responded with a no and said that everyone else were regulars - a statement which I believe was untrue and beside the point - we had made a reservation afterall and the pub was at fault here. We eventually spoke to the manager who was a bit more helpful. He tried to call up the Chequers pub (also a Nicholson brand) to see if we could get seated there. They were, unfortunately, also full. The manager also refused to let vacate any other tables. We got lucky at this point in that another group decided to leave at this point and we were able to take their tables. Once seated we then found out they had no high chair for the baby. There was also a bit of a mix up in communication with the manager as he lead us to believe that we'd have table service, but we had to order at the bar. This was probably an honest mistake, but we were quite irritated at this point. Once our meal was ordered the food arrived quite quickly. The rude barman initially came over to us with the first couple of pies and just blurted out "pie". This is a pub known for pies... many of us ordered different pies. He had no idea what he was serving so had to go back and find out. One member of our group had ordered a suet pie, but when that arrived it turned out not to be a suet pastry. The manager didn't seem to understand what that meant simply stating that's how it comes. This meal was sent back and a different meal was ordered. When going to pay our tab at the bar we requested a discount for the unpleasantries, screw up with reservation and the suet-less pie mix up resulting in a meal having to be served late. The manager allowed for a 20% discount, whilst the rude barman tutted, rolled his eyes and shook his head in the background. I will also add that on a previous visit I have seen a small rodent running around the premise, entering and exiting the door to the kitchen. To be honest, this wasn't a big deal for me - they can just come in off the street and I only saw it on the one occasion so I assume it has been dealt with. So in summary I do think the food and drink here are good. However you can't rely on reservations, it's no good for families or larger groups.

We had the bangers and mash, three excellent sausages and onion gravy. The service was good and the staff helpful and friendly.

Great recommendation by our guide for their pies. The slow-cooked steak & ale pie - oh I want more of it! Also had the chicken pie, equally good. Extremely satisfying meal for a very reasonable sum, washed down with ciders. The place is somewhat recessed in an alley, but Wirth seeking out.

It was a find in the middle if Oxford. Pleasantly surprise by young yet efficient service, good pub food, nice wine and ale. Gave us more energy on our day around gorgeous Oxford.

Nice friendly pub with great range of beers ales on tap. Cozy and inviting atmosphere. Try their Nicholson range of ales and gin. Sometimes there’s live bands.

Used to be a favourite Oxford pub in my younger days. Early evening on a Sunday and it was food and a drink but not the buzzing place I remember. Probably due to my visit time and not the pub's fault. Great old building worth a visit.

The staff here are amazing really went above and beyond to provide outstanding service everyone was smiling and the food was impeccable really recommended for a family visit or just for a nice drink or bite to eat

Lovely traditional pub with a friendly welcome and relaxed atmosphere. Slightly disappointed with the condition of the ale when I visited recently and the pricing particularly of the food is questionable so moved on quickly. Still a nice pub to visit though.

Been told to leave after being here with no reserve time on table. We said could we finish our drinks the waiter said no now you need to leave now. After spending a lot of money in there. The waiter so rude. Take your money somewhere else.

Terrible service terrible , spent hours in the place to be told the table was booked for someone else even though nothing on the table was reserved for this, spent over hundred here to be pushed off the table, would not return! Absolutely shocking! The rude waiter should be ashamed

Great beer selection and service

All good! Exactly the vibe we were looking for. Food much better than expected. Salads a bit wimpy...maybe not the best order. Brisket burger outstanding, so was lamb pie. Schnitzel very good.

Environment not up to par, dirty and sticky tables. We tried their pies (with meat etc), nothing special. Strange but certainly not unforgettable. I got their draft beer, hot!!! Good price

We were on a group tour and made reservations for 10 people. Our table was ready when we arrived and the staff was most accommodating. Everyone really liked their food and drink. Very busy but fun atmosphere.

A central Oxford pub with a nice outdoor courtyard. Wine was reasonably priced and very drinkable. Advertised their 'famous pies" so we duly ordered chicken and truffled mushroom, and a wild boar and chorizo pie. The former was adequate but the latter had little or no flavour and most definitely no chorizo. It was tasteless enough for us to ask if it was the right one - sadly, apparently it was. Edible but indistinct meat of unclear origin. Not recommended.

Excellent spot to relax, great options for snacking, good drinking selection. Please be aware that outside dining has smokers, for those who are unacostumed to the smell.

Watched a football game and had dinner here. In spite of the hectics, everything was well organized and it tasted good!
