Great pub for a pint. Staff & Landlord all excellent. Good choice of beer. Beer garden in summer ideal. Food including Sunday roast amazing. Really recommend.

Called in for a roast. Lovely beef but only 3 TINY roast potatoes and randomly stuffing served with beef. When the veg arrived, thought it was one each but it was for 2 people (extremely meagre potions!) However the Yorkshire pudding and gravy were lovely. Would I return? Probably not!

My first visit to the Crown for many years. Service was great, food was excellent. Several vegetarian options, which is always a relief for me. Will definitely go again.

Popped in there for lunch with the family. The food was absolutely amazing & the service was brilliant! James and the team were so welcoming and friendly! We had a great time and look forward to coming back again! Absolutely faultless!

I have wanted to try this pub for a long time We had one drink and left This was our anniversary and wanted to try Was gonna stay for lunch But seeing a family’s meal come by I was so disappointed Especially how much they charge I was just so blown away At price A med glass of wine and a san Miguel 12.55 ! Wow Anyway we took a ride out and found the ship inn In great Holland Decently priced and lunch was great Maybe the crown did us a favour

Extensive inexpensive menu, but we forwent the main course for three starters, squid, king prawns and mushrooms, which we shared, with sweet potato fries. James was a pleasant and helpful host. We shall certaintly visit again.

Like to thank James and his amazing bar staff for hosting 50th birthday party on Friday 9th August, atmosphere was great, food was lovely, everyone had a fantastic time 5 stars on everything, if you need to have a venue in Thorpe for anything then the Crown is deffo the place. Well done. Peter

The food was bad, not just standard bad but extra bad. All deep fat fried from frozen. I’d definitely not eat here ever again. Calamari is pictured (everything looked the same). Service was very attentive & friendly. The pub had a nice party vibe & was filled with local people. Toilets were a bit grim, one of the two was out of order. Could use a deep clean.

The atmosphere is the main reason to come here. The wonderful staff are always friendly and welcoming. The owners always book brilliant entertainment and have worked really hard to turn a pub with a previously bad reputation into a comfortable happy place. Always clean and tidy the garden area is the perfect place to relax on a nice day. Support local business and visit you won't be disappointed.

Book a table for 5.30 and got our meal 1.30 hrs later with two children who were very patient only to be spoken very reaudly to by one member of staff when asking how much longer we had to wait

We visited here before a funeral with very little time to spare having had a bad experience at the Rose & Crown. The bar lady was most helpful, quickly ran up some sandwiches, was friendly as well. There is also very good parking here and a happy atmosphere.

We found this place by the off chance in the area. Out standing service, food was really tasty, many things to choose from.

We stopped for lunch on a day out and found this pub to be a pleasant venue which is dog friendly. It has good outside seating but we could have eaten inside if we had preferred. The menu is quite short but we were delighted with the quality of the meals. The fish and chips portions were generous and the tuna Niçoise salads were perfect. We finished with the crème brûlée which was delicious. Service was excellent.

Wow, what a great night we have just had at The Crown . I couldn’t fault the service , ( jazz) and the owner Lou was so so welcoming I felt I had known her for years ! We were able to take our dog into the pub ( they love dogs!!!) which is great when you are on holiday and can’t leave them in a caravan. It is a relatively new adventure for Lou and Mick but they deserve to make a success as they are born to work in the pub trade ! Loved meeting Lou daughter ,a real family business which should be supported. Definitely 100% recommend xx We will be back xx Anne Ian and Molly

Absolutely love this pub for its friendly atmosphere and chilled out vibe , The owners Mick and Lou go out there way to make you feel welcome and has great music nights and a big beer garden for the kids to play in and great bar food !! Came for a evening meal with my husband and his family. While staying at the campsite in the village, very nice food and service, covid safety wasn't really met. The younger staff had no masked on. 3 of us had the hunters chicken and maybe could of had some more sauce. But was very nice. Would definitely come back if we were in the area again.

A spontaneous meal in the crown this evening to end the day. We were made to feel very welcome by Mark and louisa. Really nice friendly atmosphere. The food was perfect for me The place looks very up to date and very covid secure. Exactly what I needed this evening I will definitely be going back

This is the second time I've eaten at the Crown with family and friends, since the new owners have taken over. Like last time I was not disappointed. I'm attracted by the fact the Chefs use local produce ! My roast lamb was succulent and delicious, as was the rest of my roast. My Eton mess - gorgeous with their own take on it. The special order of a lemon drizzle home-made birthday cake was fab! We'll be back!!

From the delicious and fresh, including vegetarian, starters, to roast beef main and pudding, the meal was delicious and faultless. The roast potatoes were particularly irresistible and crunchy on the outside but soft in the centre. The meat and vegetables were perfectly cooked and the gravy brought balance to the whole dish. The Eton Mess pudding tasted like a homemade one. The quality of food and friendly service made us feel like we were at home. The prices were equally reasonable. For a home from home meal, The Crown is great and young Leo Shepherd is showing promise as the chef.

Another lovely meal in the sunshine x clearly cooked with love and served with smiles x big dining room as well so next time if it rains we’ll know to book and where to go..

Visited yesterday with friends and had great roast lamb. Roast potatoes were fab and the green veg was perfect I.e. not knackered. Crumble for pud was good too - not over sweet but nicely balanced. Staff very helpful even though they were really busy. Will visit again.

We enjoyed a relaxed sunday roast from LEOs outside on a beautiful day in Thorpe. The food was delicious; my roast local lamb being extremely sweet and well seasoned. Portions were just right. The Eton Mess was rich and well presented ( in a glass) as was the crumble which came accompanied by pouring cream. Service was efficient, unobtrusive and fast particularly so as our group was large. Altogether great value for the quality. We would definitely come again.

Went for brunch on Saturday, really nice food, the eggs Benedict was the best my mum has had. Staff were nice and friendly and would check back if everything was ok and if needed more drinks. Would def go back again.

Myself and my partner was here a couple of weeks back for a Sunday roast after hearing the great reviews on our local community fb group. It’s was a sunny afternoon so we opted to sit outside. Upon arrival we received the warmest welcome and was greeted by friendly staff with a smile.The food was absolutely delicious, as stated in the title ...best roast beef I’ve ever tasted, hands down.!The portion size was good, with freshly prepared locally sourced meat and vegetables what more could anyone want. The Yorkshire puddings was also a winner. We will definitely be returning here. Very friendly atmosphere. Lovely pub/restaurant all round. I would highly recommend this place.

Simple menu with focus on local produce and suppliers. Fish was delicious, steak perfectly cooked and seasoned. With attention to detail throughout, the new owners have created a welcoming restaurant, without losing the friendly feel of a local pub.

We used to be regular visitors a few years ago and can’t believe how awful the place is now . The place is filthy and hasn’t had a good clean in months . We founf Drug wrappers in the toilets. The garden is un- kept. The staff were smoking and drinking in the garden and were very young and immature. No management. I noticed the lease was up for sale , hopefully new owners will but some love and care back into it and get rid off the lazy immature staff & the unsavoury customers.

We wanted a quick lunch and were directed to a uninviting souless restaurant area. It was January and cold and the heating wasn't adequate. Food (basic cheese and onion ciabatta's) was OK. We wont be going back again

I came into The Crown with a group of my friends on a Friday night a couple of weeks ago. The manager was incredibly rude and stuck up. The toilets were absolutely disgusting and the general cleanliness of the pub was just not up to standard. There was rat droppings on the floor in the disabled toilet and by the kitchen area. The beer garden was covered in fag buts and the tables had plates and glasses on them. This place seems to be run by children! The staff are very young. pub is clearly managed by a teenager!!!

Bar staff rude! Empty drug bags in toilet! Toilets also dirty! Bar staff singing loudly and drinking made aware this was also including the manager! Very disappointed I really would not recommend

Just popped in for a drink on our mini-pub crawl in Thorpe-le-Soken (our first ever visit). So quiet for a Saturday lunch time. Literally one other customer - very friendly. It was a lovely day, we sat in garden, on our own.

A big thank you for ruining my birthday lunch which I booked last Saturday for 7 of us, we arrived at 1.00 pm as my booking to be told there’s no food as there’s no chef, how unprofessional, to say we were gobsmacked is an understatement, apparently a message was left on my answerphone, really...don’t know who’s phone it was left on,certainly not mine!!! will never go there again !!!!!

Booked a table here for mother's day hoping to treat my mum - unfortunately that wasn't quite how it panned out! I'd booked well in advance but was told I couldn't have a 4pm time slot as they stopped serving at 4 so settled for 3.30. When we arrived we were seated next to very draughty windows and the place was so cold my mum kept her coat on. We thought a coffee would warm us up but was told the machine was broken! The waitress did make us an instant one thankfully. We were given the menus and it was only when I asked about their roasts were we told there was no beef and only 1 portion of chicken. I asked about gammon and after a bit of a panic the waitress returned from the kitchen to say they had 3 portions left. As 2 more parties of diners had arrived after us I thought I'd better order quick so we settled for 1 chicken and 2 gammon. After 10 minutes the waitress returned to tell us that we couldn't have our dinners until at least 4.30 as the roast potatoes were actually still boiling in a pan!!! She suggested we order something different but then proceeded to tell us what other dishes were unavailable! We were left with burgers or fish and chips - not quite the relaxed Sunday lunch I'd expected! Interestingly I thought they stopped serving food at 4 and with the obvious lack of meat I'm not sure what they were going to serve the roast potatoes with!!We declined to reorder and left followed by another group of very dissatisfied customers. Thankfully we were both able to secure a table at another establishment where we thoroughly enjoyed our meal.

This was our third specials night in the past six weeks. These have been a curry night, fish & chip night and last weekend steak night. Food has always been freshly prepared in the kitchen, comes out piping hot and generous portions. Always a warm welcome from staff and a friendly atmosphere. We just have the Wednesday burger night left to try which our teenage says he’s joining us for!

The food was very good wholesome and a delight to eat, the service was top class and the prices are very good indeed.

Popped in on a Saturday lunchtime with five friends. We really wanted to sit outside but it was very very hot and no shade in the garden so opted for inside. Staff excellent ordered from the lunchtime menu which they printed off especially for us, very good food chips to die for and the rest of the food was excellent English Pub Grub

We just popped in for a quick drink while exploring the area. Prices reasonable, half a pint of Aspalls was delicious. Didn’t try the food, sat outside as it was hot but plagued by wasps so didn’t stay long.

Restaurant was empty on a Sunday afternoon so I should have taken this as a warning.

I went here for dinner. Ordered liver and bacon. They forgot the bacon and the seasonal veg was just frozen peas. There was very little gravy so when I asked for more my dinner was whisked away and returned with so much gravy it was impossible to see what I was eating. Needless to say I didn’t eat it. The young girl was polite and apologetic. I would not return or recommend. Go else where!!

I have visited this restaurant before and this review contrasts my previous experience. This time it was terrible. The waitress was inexperienced, no knowledge of the drinks menu, and when she brought the cuttlery, presented it in a pile on the table for us to help ourselves. At 8pm, with only 6 hot mains to choose from and no specials, there were then only 5 mains to choose from as they had sold out. All mains, apart from pasta were served with frozen chips. Our group had starters which were acceptable albeit despite claiming the pate was g/f it was served with ciabatta slices. The mains they got all wrong. One of our group of four, ordered a salad with no dressing- it came with the dressing poured all over it. Our steaks were all cooked incorrectly, I ordered a rare steak, it was presented well done. There were no more steaks to give me so I had a burger as the only two hot menu choices were pasta, fish and chips or burger. I regret I am gluten free so burger it was. It was bland. I just ate the meat. The chips were hard, I left them. The beer battered onion rings were cooked in the same fat as the whitebait starter and tasted of fish. Mains were cold, there were no salt n pepper on the table and it took a good 5 minutes to find some for us despite the restaurant being empty our side. I wonder why. All in all was a complete disaster. They also got the drinks order wrong. The website still displays the old menu and in no way represents the current menu or management team. We all left, disappointed and hungry!

I often go to the Crown once a week, possibly twice for the food, excellent bar staff, and the perfect dining experience. Never been let down in a year and a half of going to this place.

My daughter and I went into the pub today. It was a pretty miserably day, weather wise 0 but when we entered the Crown it seemed very welcoming. We only went in for a snack as my daughter was going to go out in the evening. There weren't many people in the pub, but the waitress seemed to be distracted. We both ordered diet coke; my daughter a ham and tomato toastie and I ordered a brie and onion relish toastie and extra salad - but without lettuce.

I nearly drove passed this pub, as the outside looked like a "sky sport & pool table" kind of pub, and for a lunch with an 91yr old pops at your side really doesn't suit.

Was expecting great things from the Crown but deeply disappointed. The starters were reasonable and the desserts nicely presented but the main meals let them down. To start with I was wandering about the restaurant for a while just looking for salt and pepper which was not provided and for the main meal if you don't fancy pizza there are only six courses to choose from, two are burgers and chips, one is steak and chips and one fish and chips. The other two are pasta dishes. There were two specials on the board, one was another type of pizza, the other a different fish with chips. By default I had the pasta. This was Penne pasta with a carton of tomato passata you can buy from a supermarket poured over it and a bit of basil sprinkled on top - a dish that anyone with no cooking experience can rustle up in ten minutes. It arrived stone cold. My wife had the fish and with it came new potatoes and green beans which was also cold as was my friend's new potatoes and green beans which is all you get when you order a side dish of veg. By the time this was warmed up they had nearly finished the meal.

the meals on the menu are really different in that the chef and com chefs put there forts and skills into preparing the dishes served.

We came back to this pub after a couple of okay meals hoping for improvement, wrong! Firstly they have changed their menu, very poor choice, very boring! I think the worst part is also the price, it far too high in relation to this being a local pub, frequented by locals! This is not a London or holiday destination pub! Its such a shame I really expected good things from this place.

We dropped by here a couple of times while we were staying in the village. Nice outdoor area. Only problem we found was parking as we noticed loads of people parking here and walking off to Tesco to do their shopping.

This pub is consantly running out of various beers. Dont waste your time - Try Harry's Bar or The Bell - both decent venues with a decent selection. The only positive thing I can say is the staff are helpful - its a shame they have to keep telling visitors about the lack of choice

Definitely the best in the village for Sunday roast. Happy every time I go. Beef is always cooked rare and the staff are welcoming and friendly faced. Great wine selection.

We booked a table for 8 for an evening meal around 8.30pm on a Saturday night and was totally disappointed. We had varied meals which none of them were memorable or impressive.The worst meals where the prawn salad main meals, now they were shocking! an iceberg lettuce, quarter of an apple between three of us who had the salads, some Prawns and crayfish and that its, no dressing nothing else on the plate. We were glad we ordered some chips each otherwise the whole meal would have been tasteless. Most main meals were disappointing but they were by far the worst meals I have experienced in number of years. The pub had no music or atmosphere, it was cold too. Three people ordered desserts which again where nothing special- in fact the cheese board was a joke it was just cheddar cut up with 4 crackers and some pickle- no flair or choice of cheese. Very sad as we were looking forward to experiencing a new pub/restaurant in town. The only positive comment I can make is the waitress was very helpful and attentive. We wont be rushing though.

Had lunch on Sunday 5th May, the menu was varied, the deserts were to die for and the service was very good, value for money and would visit again.

Had a brilliant burger made out from steak comes with onion rings and fries , its pubfood and to be honest its worth every penny we paid they have massive parking in garden for car also next to church as well , customer service brilliant makes you feel welcomed . Enjoyed our meal as couple...

Been to this bar/restaurant twice with extended family including children and dog. Made Very welcome. Whilst dog not allowed in restaurant we were accommodated just as comfortably in bar area. Service and food was well excellent. Garden area is also really good for the children and ample table and chairs to eat outside (weather permitting). I would recommend the Crown and will be frequenting it often in future.

Just wanted to say a massive thank you for a wonderful lunch today. I won the the competition last week for a prosecco lunch and took the opportunity today to claim my prize with my family. Having visited the pub a few years ago and had not been terribly impressed, we hadn't been back since even though it's not far from where we live. Hadn't realised it had been taken over and wow what a transformation. Lovely friendly pub, the food was outstanding and our little boy loved the play area. We'll definitely be back. Thanks for a lovely lunch and afternoon.

Called in with a friend and the wife early Sat evening, starter was disappointing, we had the bread with olive oil, a poor imagination of what this dish could be, Wifes vegi food reported as good, our fish and chips were average, Staff wanted to be great BUT need proper training, Never take plates from table whilst people are still eating, Upon paying I was given another tables bill, had I not checked I would have been charged rather more. Will skip it next time.

Mediocre meal. Very slow service. We'd only had one course after one hour. The children's meal had 2 uncooked pork sausages which I had to send back to cook thoroughly.

Booked at short notice on recommendation, The crown lived up to that recommendation even down to changing numbers at the last minute.

I have not been inside #TheCrown since it had a complete refurbishment and underwent new management. I must say the establishment has transformed and now looks amazing with its original characteristics left in place, but modernised and quite sophisticated. Now the food was out of this world, tasted so good. (I could of licked the plates clean lol) the presentation of the dishes were absolutely perfect

We popped into The Crown for an indulgent lunch, to kick start a few days away at the local spa. My partner had looked on TripAdvisor and seen it's good reviews so we were quite excited. We were the only customers in the pub when we arrived (12.45) and chose to sit in the restaurant area. The staff gave us a warm welcome, however the room was far from warm. I managed to tolerate it for around 20 minutes before asking for the heaters to be switched on. The cold theme unfortunately continued when the 'warm Cumberland sausage scotch egg' my fiancé ordered was served up to him FROZEN! He literally could not get into the egg, it was that solid. On returning it, the chef passed on a message to apologise and that it must have been too close to the back of the fridge?! Are temp thermometers not commonly used anymore? No discount etc offered and sadly would not return

We were staying at the Lifehouse Spa hotel for the weekend but decided to venture out for dinner on Saturday night - we were not disappointed in choosing the Crown. All the staff were extremely helpful & friendly. We enjoyed a lovely starter of roasted tomato soup each which was delicious. I had pork belly for main & my husband had the sea bass and both of us thoroughly enjoyed our meals. The only disappointment of the evening was that we couldn't sample the desserts as we were too full!

Went for Sunday roast dinner as a group of 4 - choice of Beef, Chicken or Lamb.

Fabulous food , nice atmosphere. Will be back soon thoroughly enjoyed it . Staff were attentive and polite.

Family of four adults and two children for Christmas day meal, very warm welcoming staff on arrival, restaurant and tables nicely decked out for Christmas, extremely pleasant and polite staff serveing, very good selection of starter, plenty of it when it arrived, the same for main course, loads of meat, plenty of vegatables, plates full, didn't think we would have enough room for sweet, again so much choice, Christmas pudding with brandy sauce very tasty, and the cheese board had so many different cheeses, to finish off, coffee and a Christmas parcel of assorted biscuits and sweets, we found this visit was so excellent that we have made our booking for Christmas day 2017.

Six of us on a family meal. I have to say thank you to the very pleasant and extremely busy young staff, the Service was Great .The meal was pre booked and suitably priced with a good choice of 3 courses or a slightly lower price for 2 courses and some other choices for a small supplement which seems to be a new trend. I have to say that the food was very good, well cooked tasty and adequate for all of us. I am not a lover of lightly cooked veg but I did eat the French beans. Overall a very pleasant evening. I will now have to try the daytime menu.

In Essex for a few days and went to this pub for lunch; it was so good went back for dinner the same day. The food is excellent we had starters of scallops, beautifully cooked, with belly pork and smoked salmon with home made potato salad. We both had the same main course fillets of sea bass on a bed of mashed potatoe with a chorizo and white bean cassoulet, brilliant. The staff were very good and the wine was not too expensive, they even supplied proper linen napkins! This is definately the place to go in this area and we will go again the next time we are in Essex.

We went to the crown for an evening meal with family . As soon as you walk in there is a good vibe . It was extremely busy as you would expect leading up to Christmas but the staff were still very attentive and friendly and went out of their way to look after you . We all had great food and when visiting my family again will definitely return

We were staying at a Spa resort nearby and decided to go out for a meal. Thorpe Lee Soken has a fair choice of eaterys, but the Crown looked warm and friendly, and it did not dissapoint.

They've got live music. They've got pizza. They've got pints, and I'm sure once you're gone they'll miss ya! Come here for some nice quiet nights when it's off-peak or for some vibrant tunes and atmosphere when it's busy.

Friendly staff really excellent food but sadly child sized Portions for adults. Consequently it wasn't great value for money.

as the weather has been kind of late i treated my daughter to lunch out ...my grandson played on the outdoor play equipment so of course we sat outside..the decor inside is lovely and cozy comfy but we stayed outside ..very lovely outdoor space ..the food was excellent and the staff so friendly and didn't mind in the least to ing and fro ing to bring our food to the farthest away table ..well worth a visit

8 of us went for mums birthday 6 starters came out other two (cold starters) 10 mins later. When ordering the mains there was seafood linguine on menus we asked if it was with tomato sauce or white wine, was told white wine so ordered two. When the mains came out the two white wine seafood linguine were a plate of linguine covered in a tomato sauce no seafood not sure how they managed this as this was the only pasta dish on the menu. We complained and they apologised and some time later bought out what was ordered, by now most of us had finished our meal. Their only redeeming factor was they did not charge for the two meals, but it spoilt the evening.

Had a fabulous evening with our friends and the food was delicious we had seafood linguine from the special board would recommend this pub

An average place... with an average setting.... an average meal.... over all just average.... but expensive.

The crown is not only a great pub with good beer and a good vibe it also boats some of the best food available in the area. The staff are attentive, the menu is varied, the prices are reasonable and most importantly the food is of good portion and is immaculately presented. I will definitely visit on a regular basis.
