Bitterly disappointed with how we were received whilst entering the county. My other half is local and recommended to go here as a family for a spot of lunch. We walked in and there were staff members standing at the bar and they just stared at us. We weren’t sure whether we needed to be allocated a table or could sit anywhere. After a few more moments of just standing waiting. A staff member curtly said “are you needing a table for three” we said yes please. And we were just stared at again. The lady then asked a more senior gentlemen something and we heard him say- “stop talking and go clear the tables and stop talking rubbish” then the younger staff member was being publicly criticised in front of customers. I am completely shocked with the “welcome” we received and lack of being shown to a table, even more shocked at the culture and environment. We had to walk out.

I have eaten curries here many times and it's always very good. But this most recent was the best so far and has prompted me to leave a review! I had Lamb Rogan Josh and my friend had the vegan Amritsi Chole. Both were superb. Rogan Josh is generally a very mild dish but this had a complex and very satisfying spicing and heat that left me thinking about it for days after. I was told the Chole were similarly delicious. The Nan's were fresh and hot. Service prompt, friendly and unobtrusive. Overall excellent value. All in all, if you want a really good curry on Lewis, look no further.

Looking for Indian food whilst working in the area, there seems to be only 2 places available, the other restaurant had nobody in so I came here as it had a good number of people eating, very glad I did, the Indian food was fantastic with lots of fresh ingredients. The girls on service where friendly and efficient. The only small downside was it was freezing cold in the restaurant but a few mouthfuls of my madras soon rectified that!!

AWFUL! Avoid if you are looking for a good indian meal. All ate from Indian menu. Used to be the best curry in town but now - no flavour, no spice and no heat in the curries. Tasted distinctly of Heinz tomato soup!! Naan breads were basic and not very tasty. Will not recommend or eat here again. Embarrassed to have taken friends here to eat. Service was good, staff friendly and polite.

Had Indian curry, Chinese stir fry and Scottish Balmoral chicken on different nights All were very authentic and very enjoyable. The portions were very generous. The table staff were all very pleasant and efficient. The restaurant had been a recommendation from the Lews Castle staff. Both husband and myself really enjoyed our experience. Reading through reviews here from the last 2years all seem very favourable so I’m assuming the rude arrogant man who was behind the bar has left or they keep him well away from the customers nowadays. Dining room is a bit dated though and could do with a more updated look. Given the ravages of 20/21 it did not spoil our enjoyment. Just an aside to our experience. Each night there, it was always busy.

Excellent food - best Indian I have had for years. I had the the Lamb Madras which was excellent. I had read the previous reviews about the Indian meals and was a bit sceptical as a curry anywhere apart from a proper Indiqn restaurant is normally tasteless. This was up there with the best Indian food I have had. Would say more meat than normal, spice was perfect and the sauce was delicious. In fact so good that I ordered additional chapattis just to use up the last of the sauce half way through the meal. Not the wisest move as the very filling curry caught up with me. After a disappointing meal in a local Indian my partner went for the venison casserole which was also excellent and again excellent portions.

I have eaten in the Resturant a number of times and have nearly always gone for a curry. I have also had a number of takeaway curries and always enjoyed the great quality of the curries. Some of the best I have ever had. During lockdown I have had three takeaways for my wife and myself and every one of them has been very disappointing. My wife did ask the owner if the chef had changed and was told that was not the case. We keep going back thinking they had a bad night and things must get better. Friends of ours recently had a takeaway for three and said that the starters were good but only one of the mains was okay. Not sure if we will try again. Such a shame because they were so good.

Over the week we tried several places with good reviews, but were disappointed in the food quality. The County Hotel proved a welcome exception to rule, the sirloin steak is excellent, my wife enjoyed the Indian food.We ended up using the county as our place to eat. We were delighted and very surprised by the quality of the curries, generally having quite low expectations of curries from pubs / hotels. This was exceptional however. Had a lovely day with my grandmother today, and thought we'd finish off by popping in for a quick bite to The County. We just wanted something light. We sat, then I went up to the bar and ordered drinks and two soups. A lovely server delivered our drinks, cutlery and butter for the soup. We waited about twenty minutes, but in fairness it was busy, then left it another ten minutes, at which point I decided to ask somebody about our soups. I returned to the bar, where I asked an incredibly unenthusiastic man in shirt and tie where our soups were. He told me, and I quote, "You couldn't possibly have ordered soups or you'd have had them by now!", so I pointed to our table where our cutlery and butter lay unaccompanied by any soup, then pointed to the girl who I placed our order with. He simply shrugged while she apologised profusely and said our soup would be two minutes. Not long after, the same charismatic man with shirt/tie combo came along with our soups, and told us "Maybe try ordering at the bar next time?", and I told him that's exactly what I had done, to which he replied "Ugh, roll on October", and walked away.

Don't often go out for a meal as there are food intolerance's and allergies, We so wish we hadn't put ourselves through the terrible time we had. Firstly i explained that there was foods that could not be eaten by the youngest member of our party. They said they could not guarantee that there was no cross contaminated and that they were far to busy to oven baked a handful of chips ( for a small child) this was after the waitress had been to the kitchen a number of times ( which she was not very happy to do as it was taking up time ) to ask the chef various questions. The solution to her issue could have be resolved if she had spoken to the chef and said she had a customer ( a young child) who had these intolerance's and allergies what could they provide for her. The end result was a bowl of rice with vegetables which had a spoonful eaten then left. There was a reaction to this and when asked the waitress said she couldn't tell what was in it as it was already made. Which i don't understand as everything was explained before hand. The other issue was how uncomfortable we all and i mean we all including the 4 year old was made to feel , being stared at by the said waitress to the point that the young child was wanting to leave and kept asking. NOT a pleasant experience and i would advise those with young children and food intolerance's and allergies to stay clear of this place as they are not accommodating at all. A rare meal out totally spoilt.

Myself and my husband had dined here a few times before and everything was perfectly fine. This second-most recent time we ordered from the Indian menu for dinner. I was a little fussy, yet was fine to let my request be denied, asked for my chicken curry to be made "extra hot". Apparently the chef was fine with this and delivered. The curry was lovely. However, the last and most recent time we had dined at the establishment for dinner, this time, we were told that both the Indian and Italian dishes were unavailable. "Ok, fair enough" we thought. So, we ordered the fish & chips be and then "County Beef Burger", respectively. According to a local butcher, the beef is "definitely not local", rather it is slaughtered in Dingwall and shipped here. Had it not said "local" I would be ok with that fact, considering where most of the island's meat comes from.

It may just have been a bad night for The County, they were only offering Italian food and not, as is apparently usual, Indian as well. A charming young waitress found us a seat and despite being the youngest member of staff she seemed to be the only one who knew what they were going. The rest seemed very unfocused and our relatively simple order took almost an hour to appear. We were offered complimentary drinks but they even had to be reminded about those twice and took fifteen minutes to pour half a pint of beer. The food was ok, nothing remarkable, but the extended wait really took away any enjoyment, which is a shame.

Recently visited the county for a meal, was greeted pleasantly and picked a table as it was rather empty. Ordered our food with one alteration from the menu (we asked for one of the Philly cheese steaks to not have mushrooms) otherwise a normal order. Once our food arrived they both didn't have mushrooms- once questioned we got told we ordered them both without- then got told the chef doesn't put mushrooms in it at all even though the menu states otherwise.. I then noticed my own Prawn Thai style wrap had transformed into a chicken Thai wrap. So then I tried to catch the attention of one of the waiting staff who didn't acknowledge me what so ever to ask how this had happened- I decided just to eat this as I did not have time to wait for it to be changed. Not once during our meal where we asked if everything was okay or anything else.We also had to approach the counter for our bill as we didn't have time to hang about, didn't understand the lack of service when there was only 5 tables in use by the time we left (more staff than tables). This used to be a great place to go and have a meal but the past couple of visited have just left me disappointed and I hope it can go back to the way it was in the future.

The staff were friendly and welcoming but more interested in their phones than attentive service. The food however was the real disappointment. The menu has twin Indian and varied European offerings. However the fish and chips which arrived at the table whilst fresh was overcooked and under seasoned. What really let the dishes down however was presentation. The food appeared to have been dumped on the plate with little care or attention. Not really good enough for a place with aspirations and prices towards the upper end of the market.

I visited this restaurant the last time I was on the Isle of Lewis. I was so disappointed I had to leave a review. A year on and we were back on the island and a friend suggested a get together, the venue - The County! My reaction - Shock! Horror! My friend knew about my last visit but informed me, being a local, that things had improved. I was also willing to give it the benefit of the doubt and a second chance, I mean, after a year they must have got their act together!Sadly we were all mistaken. The reception from staff was abrupt and although polite lacked experience. The waiters and waitresses seemed very young and were more consumed by their own entertainment than bothering with diners. The food was horrendous. I'm not sure what they think they're serving but I was not at all pleased. I didn't eat much. Nobody asked if I had enjoyed my meal or why so much was left behind. We were finally presented with the bill, which was slapped down on the table by a short man who we took to be the owner/manager. This rude ignoramus tried to charge us double for drinks until we challenged him - and all this fuss because we wanted to pay separately with separate receipts. No apologies - nothing! Just loud shouts and growls of annoyance. Thankfully we're too civilised to stoop to such depths and made a hasty exit. The moral:"Never again" we all exclaimed, sometimes you shouldn't give places second chances.

On a recent trip to the Isle of Lewis, my wife and I decided to go to the County for lunch one day in town (time was just before 2pm). We entered the premises and sat down at an available table (I think you're supposed to wait to be seated, but there were no staff in sight). After a few moments a waitress appears. "Are you in for food?" she asked (without any kind of greeting or welcome). "Yes" I replied. "Kitchen closes at 2, I'll have to take your order straight away". We had a quick look at the menu, and each chose something quickly. She then went away to the kitchen with our order, and returned a few minutes later to take our drinks order. The food came fairly quickly and was very nice. After that the waitress in question went up to the couches near the reception and began chatting to a couple of her colleagues at what appeared to be the end of their shift. When we finished, we got up, paid (without gratuity) and left.I was unhappy with the general demeanour of the staff. We were not made to feel welcome and, in actual fact, felt that they couldn't wait to get rid of us. I also thought that the "staff banter" in view of customers looked unprofessional, and was also annoying because you felt like a pest bothering them after 2pm.Couldn't fault the quality of the meal, but there is much room for improvement in staff's attitude toward customers.

Came here for a meal with family who all love curry and spicy foods except for me. Their menu was impressive and what they ordered I was told was very good. However as someone who doesn't eat spicy foods my selection was rather limited. I ordered a burger which was very average, no thought seemed to go into the presentation or flavourings and overall was quite disappointing. If you like spice it seems to be a good place to go, if you don't I wouldn't recommend it.

Service was brisk although not very attentive. We ordered from the Indian menu - what utter tosh. The starters looked like they were just banged on a plate; the curries were not very tasty - although not totally bland and the naans were burnt. We were told the chefs were Indian in which case this place should be doing so much better!

This place should be higher up on people's radar. OK, it's down a side street and a bit unprepossessing but once inside, all change! Pleasant, attentive staff, prompt service - and a really good curry. Big range of dishes on offer too - not just Indian cuisine. Will be back.

Good location with plenty of window seating. They have an "English" menu and Indian. We had a chicken curry that was out of this world. Many locals were dining here which to me is a good sign.

Non è così facile trovare un ristorante per la sera ed è necessario prenotare. In questo ristorante dell'hotel abbiamo mangiato bene anche se, sicuramente il piatto di carne era il più gustoso e completo.Centrale, servizio veloce, prezzo medio. Non male.

I've eaten here loads of times, and recommended it to many people as the best place to get a curry on the island. However, every time I'm there something goes wrong. We have been forgotten before ordering. We've been forgotten after ordering. We've been overcharged and undercharged. We've been served the wrong dishes, too few dishes, too many dishes. We've even been served starters without plates. The owner's response today when we complained: indifference. Sadly there is so little competition here that the place can survive, even with this terrible level of service. Add to that the fact that many customers are tourists who will never be back, and the result is that they can make plenty of money, regardless, so why bother?

Staff were quick and very attentive. Even although was very busy lunchtime. Had a chicken pesto sandwich with plenty of filling. Most of our table had the Fish n Chips and was lovely and generous portion! Great value for 6 people and will be back again.

We had experienced a taste of the food at a 60th birthday , so we decided to book a meal ourselves . The Menu was very tempting but we had set our minds on Asian food cooked by a marvellous chef , we were told , Well we had Chicken Pakora for starters and it was just scrumptious , we then went on to have chicken Bhuna and Peshwari Nan it was an absolute treat , the staff were extremely friendly and helpful and the atmosphere was very relaxed , I would recommend anyone to go along and enjoy a super meal

not being able to get into another local establishment we decided on the county - this was quiet almost empty and this should have been a hint of why. There were plenty of staff but and the server who delt with us was pleasant but lacked training - our orders were taken and we had to wait an age for our meals - I had chicken and mozzerella which when it came was just a processed chicken burger with cheese on top on a dry bun cut in half some salad and coleslaw with chips scattered on the top - definately not value for money my aunt had gammon steak with egg and pineapple - the egg was undercooked with the white still clear not a full steak but a number of bits of gammon - the other two in the party had haddock and chips which were acceptable but why put the garden peas in a ramekin? only two of us had a pud - not worth a mention esp at over a fiver!

We pre-booked as it was Saturday evening and found it extremely busy and a little noisy. The food was good, however, and the staff were very efficient. It was close enough to our B&B to be able to walk there, so useful!

This would have been a very good night. We were a large group and the restaurant was busy. The two friendly waitresses were trying to cope with everybody though one was new. They were also expected to cope with reception for the hotel and it was a busy time as the ferry had just come in. They did a good job and the food was good too. Next time it would be nice to see reception looked after by a third person.

Staff not very welcoming. On arrival we asked for a table, there was no welcome just a bark "sit anywhere" Menu looked quite good, but on ordering the meal was rather disappointing.....the fish was the only edible thing to come out of the kitchen but was badly let down by the small portion of oven chips that were served with it. In fact it was oven chips that was being served with everything it seems! We were asked if we wanted a dessert but were told as we were given the menu to decide quickly as the chef was due to finish his shift. Elderly guests at a nearby table were also being rushed and the waitress seemed quite abrupt with them too.The restaurant looks tired, chairs are worn, the floor was grubby and the ornamental light fittings on the wall above the tables were absolutely filthy with what looked like years of dust. One thing in this establishments favour were the spotlessly clean toilets.

Went here for dinner on Friday night as a party of 6. It was quite busy so we expected a bit of a wait but the food was out to us in what felt like no time at all. We ordered from both the Indian and European menu and there were no complaints from any of us. Went back for drinks on the Saturday and between all of us sampled half of the huge cocktail list. The coconut one was amazing!!Would definitely go back here, lovely dinner menus and a nice spot to just go and have a few drinks. Staff were great as well, even when they were busy with dinner guests on Saturday, we were served quickly even though we were just in for drinks.

I've reviewed here once before I feel like this 'restaurant' needs to be reviewed again. We are here in January. The island was hit with pretty bad weather and the power was very temperamental. Up in Ness, the power had been out all day and since we heard the power in town was on, we thought we'd take a spin out since we were bored at home. We decided to come here for lunch and was greeted by a rather stern waitress. We were shown to our table and was given our menus without any conversation. She didn't want to be there. We ordered our food and despite being the only table in, there was a rather long delay for a baked potato, macaroni and burger. Once the food arrived, on a cold plate, we ate. My macaroni was like soup. It wasn't sauce, it was like tasteless cheese milk. After sitting for nearly 20 minutes with our finished plates, the waitress pulled herself away from watching the telly and cleared. The boys decided they fancied pudding and instead of getting a menu for them, sighed and told them of the top of her head. One banoffee pie and one cheesecake order later, she went into the kitchen and all hell broke loose! From the restaurant, we heard both the waitress and cook arguing! Apparently, he was nearly finished his shift and she knew not to take anymore orders. He shouted he wasn't going to do them and started slamming things around. This made us feel very awkward. Once she came out, we tried to make a joke from it to lighten the mood but she just shouted back into the kitchen saying we had heard him. Once the bog standard puddings arrived, we ate up quickly and left. Awful experience. Will not be back.

So bad it entertained us.Being part of a group of 7 we half expected to wait slightly longer than normal. So ill start with drinks, first order included 2 bottles of bud and pints of lager, we were then told they had none, fine, so it was quickly swapped for pints of Amstel, 2nd round we were told there was no Amstel left, so the round turned to 7 pints of Heineken. third round same again said the waitress, we agreed, the waitress returned with 7 pints and said sorry do you mind having Amstel the heinekens run out. Just a shambles. If Amstel only need the barrel changed we'd have waited. Just to much rust from the staff. To the food. From getting the menus to getting our starters there was 1 hour 25 minutes, yes it was busy but thats crazy, not to mention one starter was forgotten, but only to 5 mins to come once the staff were informed, The mains wait was a further 30 minutes after the starters were cleared, and the comedy service continued, 2 curries 3 rices and a nan, when i was sitting with rice and a nan bread in front of me she asked if id even ordered a curry. and did the same to those who had curry but no rice. To top things off I'm not remotely convinced it was the chicken tikka karahi that i ordered, but by this point i could have eaten the flowers on the table, pudding was skipped because we couldn't handle anymore comedy. The bill appeared sharper than the steak knives, and included the 2 original buds we ordered and never got.To round up. A totally disastrous night with mediocre food and terrible service, easiley by far the worst service I've ever encountered in a restaurant.Having said all that i ate here the week before and it was a great night and a great meal.Hence the hit and miss summery

We were looking for a place to eat and we happened upon The County Hotel. We went in and asked for a table for 2, although we were initially asked if we booked, which we hadn't, we were given a table which was great. Spoilt for choice is an understatement, you can choose starter/main/dessert from menus covering British, Italian and Indian cuisine! I am a massive fan of Indian food and thought I'd give the Indian menu a go, I wasn't disappointed. I went for the Garlic Chilli Chicken, it was possibly the best curry I had ever eaten (and I have eaten many different curries), stunning flavour and spicy kick. My Wife went for the Dopiaza, equally as stunning (I had a sneaky taste). The Chef there is first class, forgive my spelling but we were told his name is "Minoj"...again, apologies if this is misspelt. Awesome Chef!If you are visiting Stornoway and like Curry, go to this place...you won't be disappointed!

Went with local friends when visiting for a local wedding, I ordered a prawn curry but asked if they would put chicken in aswell (the most normal request in an Indian there is) but the chef refused to do it, saying it went against the dish it was. When I sent the waitress back to remind the chef that he wasn't the one eating it, he still refused. Definition of stupidity and arrogance, ruined the night. Will never return, wouldn't recommend to an enemy.

look as a Glaswegian, I know Indian restaurants. I make no comments on the restaurant itself as we took takeaway. the food is plentiful but very average. As another review has indicated, the sauces seem really sweet and bland. Average at best
