The Cornerstone BB And Restaurant in Shetland Islands

Stayed for 1 night in the B&B rooms. Rooms were clean and comfy, ensuite looked to have been recently refurbished. Good powerful shower with plenty of hot water. Breakfast was fine, coffee was great. No hesitation in recommending it as a place to stay.

I was killing a bit of time so stopped in past for a slice of cake and a cuppa. Very prompt service although perhaps sign up for Check in Scotland rather than having to write on a sheet of paper (already filled with names, addresses, telephone numbers) your contact details.Onto the food - I wasn't on for something cooked to eat, so went for a cake of which there was lots of cakes/slices to choose from and eventually I went for the Victoria sponge cake. Excellent pricing too as a large slice was only £2.20 - I've paid way more for that for a small piece!! The cake was delicious and went well with the cuppa.

Stopped here for morning coffee. Obviously a very popular place for local folk. Very much enjoyed the shortcake biscuit I had with my drink. Crisp and butttery. One-way system in place.

After walking around the gorgeous harbour in Scalloway, stop in here for a hit chocolate to warm you up. It’s so chocolatey and creamy. Staff are very very nice!

Light and airy a very pleasant local cafe/bar. Good selection of cakes, coffee and alcohol. Easy free parking in the harbour car park opposite.

We ate here during Wool Week 2019. I'm a bit late in posting this review. Chatted with the owner who told us about the rooms he had upstairs but we were already staying in an Airbnb. We had breakfast there which is lovely and very cheap. Locals come to eat there as well. The porridge was really good along with other goodies.

The nicest place Scallowy! The owner is the nicest host we've met. You can eat or just have a cup of real good espresso/capuccino.

We often visit the cornerstone for a coffee and cake. They offer a great selection of both food and drink, set in a lovely, well looked after building. The staff are always friendly, and nothing is too much trouble. Keep up the great work team!

Lovely restored building close to the castle in Scalloway, cakes baked by staff and were delicious along with the selection of savoury food. The owner was around to say hello. Gluten free no problem. Prices were good for the quality and quantity topped with views out to see. Seemed popular as several tables had been pre-booked.

I ate in the cafe, want staying at the b and b. The owner was extremely friendly and keen to make everyone ar ease. I chose the quiche of the day, boursin cheese and spring onion. Delightful. I wasnt rushed at all, sat for quite a while with my tea after I had finished eating. The rest of the food looked good and the cakes were very tempting. Please visit this cafe if you are passing.

This is a seriously lovely cafe (I’ve not yet been for an evening meal). Three breakfasts and we had change from £15.00. And very fine hearty breakfasts too- with lovely friendly staff!!

Stopped in by the Cornerstone with family for a cuppa and a scone to keep us going. Drinks and food were excellent. Service was prompt and waitresses were very polite. A good choice.

My partner and I came in here after a morning of wandering round Scalloway. Soup, burger and scones all lovely and I was pleased to see they had a gluten free cake available - bakewell tart which was delicious. I got the last piece and they brought a new plate of gf raspberry and cream cheese cake slices out and I got one to take away!! Very reasonably priced, delicious food and friendly service! We would definitely return! My only slight complaint is that they finish serving lunch at 2pm. We had come in at around 13.45 so luckily were able to order lunch but atleast 3 groups came in after 2 looking for lunch and were told it had stopped and only coffee and cake were available. I'm sure there is a good reason for this but surely it might be good for the business to extend the lunch service til 3pm as there is clearly a demand for it? Regardless we had a great lunch here and would highly recommend!

We had a very good lunch here. All the food are top quality, esp the mushroom soup, and the coffee is brilliant. The cakes looked so tempting but I was unable to fit more in.

We had stopped in Scalloway to visit the museum and to have a stroll in the harbour and centre. We wanted a drink so I had a delicious, hot coffee and a very generously-sized and tasty flapjack. My wife had a bottle of water and we got change out of a five pound note. The staff were pleasant and smiley and the ambience in the cafe was noticeably pleasing with quirky decor and well furnished. Very much worth seeking out if you visit the wee town.

Visiting the small town of Scalloway, I heard Scottish dance music being played on an accordion by a young girl sitting outside the Cornerstone restaurant.

We came here twice whilst staying in Scalloway, once for lunch and once for tea and cakes. Both times the service and food was excellent and reasonably priced. Shame we didn’t visit in the evening as well as it’s open Friday and Saturday for dinner. It’s also licensed.

We visited the Cornerstone a couple of times whilst on holiday in Shetland. The food was always fresh, tasty and with plenty of choice (including some local dishes). The staff were very warm and friendly towards us, especially the older Irish gentleman who couldn’t be nicer!

Just had lunch with family and friends, take of 9 and they couldn't have been more accommodating. All the food came out together and was piping hot and so tasty!

We had lunch twice at The Cornerstone, once on a Sunday and midweek. Choice of food was excellent, service first class and meals were splendid. Good value.

Enjoyed a great welcome from the owner and his staff. They even went hunting for 2 more fruit scones which were lovely and fresh.

I've visited the Cornerstone since it opened, very friendly and accommodating service and staff. Good food giving good value for your hard earned cash.

I was passing on Saturday and saw they did lunches on Sundays. I booked and was very glad that I did. When I arrived on Sunday at about 12 there was plenty of space, but they had reserved me a small table. By the time I'd eaten the restaurant was packed. It is very popular, so make sure you book in advance. The roast dinner was excellent, well cooked and well served. The staff are so friendly and welcoming. I have no hesitation in recommending this restaurant.

We stopped for coffee and cake here recently and enjoyed it very much. We were welcomed warmly and served promptly. The cakes were lovely and very reasonably priced. Highly recommended!

We were taken to the cornerstone for morning coffee by a local. Cakes were great, service was brilliant, strongly recommend.

We called in on the off chance for an afternoon cuppa. Don’t be fooled by a rather uninviting/old fashioned exterior - inside its v bright with good table sizes and not too crowded. Staff are very friendly and food/drinks generous and very reasonably priced. So good that we went back two days later for breakfast! Equally good - well worth the short drive from Lerwick.

Delicious lunch on Sunday. Roast pork was a melt in the mouth delight and was served with well cooked vegetables and a home made apple sauce. Could not have wished for a better meal.

Stopped here for a cuppa on a damp windy morning.very welcoming Irish man.had tea and a roll in sauusermeat!!! Looked like square sausage to me,but it was lovely on a cold morning.

We really enjoyed our visit to the cornerstone, it was lovely atmosphere and nothing was to much trouble. Food was delicious and coffee was perfect.

Fanstastic fish and chips for lunch today. Quick, friendly service and everything was obviously freshly cooked to order. Couldn’t fault it. Well done!

Called in for morning coffee on a visit to Scalloway, really impressed, great service and food, very friendly and lovely decor - a very new clean, feel. So impressed that we returned for tea in the afternoon!

Excellent location on Scalloway Main Street, overlooking the picturesque bay with ruined castle, hills and seascape. The environment is relaxed and sociable, with highly responsive service and delightfully fresh homemade meals and snacks. Terry and Grace are quietly superb hosts.

We had two meals here, and each time we thoroughly enjoyed it. Very casual and laid-back atmosphere.

We stopped here for lunch. We received a very warm welcome and were quickly ushered to a table. The food was freshly prepared and very tasty. The coffee was good. This friendly, busy, very clean cafe is well worth a visit.

Friendly, bustling, welcoming cafe serving truly tasty soups and sweet things at lunchtimes. Packed on a Monday. Recommend the butternut squash soup. And the toffee apple cake!

We had 4 nights here following our week in Orkney. This place cannot be faulted. There are 5 guest rooms but apart from one lone visitor for a night or two we had the place to ourselves. Grace and Terry, with Marian and several super young ladies (Rana especially) attended to our needs with great care. Breakfasts were wonderful and we had a good lunch in the cafe on 2 days. We hope to return.

We had lunch and then coffee and cake here. The main meals were nice home cooked style food, the chips are a highlight. However these were not the real attraction, the coffee is delicious and the cakes are fantastic. It is a bright and airy, comfortable to sit in with a view of the bay. The staff were welcoming and friendly. The place is very clean and tidy. It is ideally situated near to the museum and castle, just a few minutes walk. My advice would be to skip mains and head straight for pudding.

One vegan in our party. Alas nothing vegan on offer in the café despite being advertised on TripAdvisor as such. Bit of a let down really.

Wir kamen bei strömenden Regen nach dem Besuch des Museums und der Schlossruine ins zur Mittagzeit gut besuchte Cafe-Restaurant. Der überaus freundliche Wirt suchte uns sogleich einen Platz und erklärte uns die Bestellprozedur. (Wie in einem Pub: an der Theke bestellen und bezahlen, die Bestellung wird dann serviert). Zur Mittagzeit gibt es kleine Speisen (Suppe, Quiche, Burger etc.), tagsüber Scones und andere Mehlspeisen. Für Lunch oder Teepause (Kaffee gibt es natürlich auch) empfehlenswert.

I meant to review this ages ago. I went to the cornerstone with my wife and it was memorable for all the right reasons. Friendly staff. Food was amazing and I intend to go back again.

Cafes all over the world should come here to find out how it should be done! I went in with Norwegian friends first for coffee and later for lunch. They all agreed that the coffee was fabulous and even the fishing expert agreed that the haddock was of a world beating standard.

Testé pour le goûter, The Cornerstone propose des pâtisseries, et spécialités pour un prix tout à fait raisonnable. Accueil souriant, décoration agréable, lieu très soigné.

Only used restaurant, but food was simple but tasty. Busy, but turnover in table space meant no waiting. Lovely cakes for afternoon tea.

During our short visit to Shetland we had a snack lunch here twice. The sandwiches were fresh and tasty and the staff were very welcoming. Good tea and coffee too. Would recommend

My husband’s first comment...the coffee was good. So was the hot chocolate, perhaps the best I had during our travels.

Popped in for lunch and we were not disappointed! I think it had only reopened the day before after having some work carried out as we had seen scaffolding on the building whilst we were staying for a few days in an adjacent property.

Had a nice lunch at the cornerstone with my grandmother and mum food was lovely and enjoyable.

First time I have been here ,excellent snack .Although very busy managed to get a seat .Staff very efficient.Nice buzz about the place ,will defiantly be back .Terry very friendly as well !

Nice place. Tray bakes were good. We saw two different members of staff lifting the cakes with their bare hands though. Then touching dirty dishes and coins etc and doing the same again. Really reasonable prices. Staff could have been a little bit friendlier.

Love the food here. Staff are always friendly and very chatty. Very comfy and familiar place. Nothing is too much trouble and they'll always try to accommodate.

one of the few places to get some food in Scalloway, we both chose Panini with chips and they were nice, both happy with the food and the service. Restaurant is modern and airy with nice local art on the walls.

Great service and a good range on the menu - really nice coffees and lovely cakes. There isn't much choice in Scalloway but they don't rest on their laurels.

We called in for a coffee,but really out of curiosity. This building used to be the Scalloway Museum and we visited regularly. We wished that we'd been hungry, the food looked really good. The difference between "then and now" was amazing,but there were enough details in the decor to remind us.

Good coffee, poor choice of overpriced and not very adventurous or enticing small cakes and biscuits. You needed a microscope to find the rocky road and muesli slices. Cafe owner should take a lesson from Victoria's vintage tea rooms on unst about how cakes should be. If you want decent fat cakes go elsewhere.

We came here following a recommendation from someone at the museum. Wish we'd gone to the hotel instead! The service was good, but I ordered the macaroni cheese and it was tinned. Extremely disappointing - a decent macaroni cheese is one of the easiest things to make and freeze in portions and there's no excuse for dishing up tinned food to paying customers. The cakes were also bland and poor value for money. A real shame as this place looked lovely.

The Cornerstone restaurant is located on the mains street in Scalloway, in a charming old house. The restaurant is modern looking. While the food was good this is not a "fine dining" sort of place. I had both dinner and a lunch there with some local friends. The service was good and the owners friendly.

if you are visiting Shetland , scalloway in particular, please stop along for some lunch at the cornerstone, you will not be disappointed! staff are so friendly and will go the extra mile for you. Everything is home cooked and delicious , my personal favourite is the sweet potato, chilli and coconut soup , it is to die for , yummy yum yum !

This popular cafe on the Corner of the High Street in Scalloway has attracted good reviews so we popped in for lunch en route to the Scalloway Hotel. Have to say we were a little disappointed. The place was incredibly busy and though the cafe has a good atmosphere the sandwiches were rather ordinary. We were rather hoping for home made bread but there was only supermarket ready sliced brown on offer. Perhaps they were so busy they they had run out of the home made variety. Coffee was ok and staff were helpful though.

Nice cafe with lovely atmosphere, the food was decent and catered for my awkward allergies which was nice! Not too fond of the coffee or hot chocolate, they were a bit watery and they put so much of the flavour syrup in it was undrinkable it was just pure sugar, maybe getting a pump on the syrup bottles would stop there being so much syrup as it seems they just pour it in. Which Is a shame.cause the honeycomb syrup smelled amazing

I've been here twice on this trip. Very nice coffee & tea & home made cakes. Today I had home made tatie & leek soup. This was delicious nicely spiced & not at all the bland mush you occasionally get in England.

The hosts at this recently converted stone building couldn't have been more kind. Clean, well serviced rooms, delicious breakfast each morning all with a friendly, Shetland smile. We really appreciated our host giving 3 of us a lift into the ferry terminal at Lerwick on our last day. He went well over the call of duty and all so cheerfully.

This is a widely known venue, that does very well, is well managed and has fab staff. Really, the manager and staff are super.

Decent coffee, nice scone, pleasant atmosphere. Staff were a wee bit rude, insistently told us where to sit even though plenty tables were free.

We ere looking for an alternative to eating at the Scallaway hotel and found this just along the road. Quite busy which is a good sign. Good range of dishes and our choices were well cooked and tasty. Not fancy cooking but that is not always a good thing. Good value, friendly service, nice ambience. I would recommend this in preference to Scallaway any day of week.

Not always easy to find a good veggie breakfast but the Cornerstone does it well. Their small breakfast is a good start for all but the most gigantic of appetites. It's good simple food, well-cooked and always great service. Although becoming well-known for their food, some lovely cakes and a good coffee, not everyone realises that they also have lovely bedrooms upstairs, an ideal spot for visitors to choose as a central point for exploring Shetland.

Arrived very late in the day (just a little before closing) and offered teas and cakes. Exactly what we needed after a long day sight seeing the western side of Shetland Mainland. Excellent coffee and an inspired selection of cakes - best for me was the home-made cake/pastry called a 'custard cream' - see photo - light, fluffy, melt-in-the-mouth, soft biscuit with a tangy butter icing (I believe) centre, made by one of the local ladies at the Cornerstone. Absolutely delicious! 5 stars for food, service and price. No faults here. The Cornerstone is a great find!

We just had drinks and cakes on a morning walk around Scalloway. Its around the corner from the castle with a public carpark opposite. It was all very nice with ,lots of people popping in for breakfasts, very popular.

Had excellent fish and chips. The fish was so fresh and not overly cooked and not a thick better. Delicious

We were looking for somewhere for a light lunch and this fitted the bill perfectly :) A good choice of normal lunch fare, from soups and sandwiches, pannini to home-made mackerel pate. Excellent service, lovely surroundings with unusual artwork, and very reasonably priced.

Nearly every day at our holyday at shetland,we visited Marion at the cornerstone. You get a warm welcome good coffee and tasty cakes.

Small, friendly restaurant in the pretty village of Scalloway. Lovely food and a great view over the sea to nearby islands.

We have just had a very comfortable stay with an excellent evening meal and breakfast. They may not have any rosettes, but they certainly deserve some. The staff are very friendly and efficient. The food is well cooked and presented. It is very reasonably priced. What more could anybody ask for. There is nothing pretentious about this place. It is good value all round. We will be back.

Unfortunately we were greeted by sideways glances and made to feel a bit unwelcome when we wandered in twenty minutes before closing. We asked if place was still open - "ermm...yes" was the reply. "Are you sure?" was my response as it felt as if we were really inconveniencing the staff. That aside, once inside, another member of staff went out of their way to find a vegetarian option to the mutton and tatty soup that was on offer - though DID have to explain first that despite waitress assurances that there would be no lumps of meat in the "its all melted in to the soup" that it didn't mean it was veggie :). Would have liked to tried this place again to give it a proper chance, sadly , despite the board outside advertising the fact that they were open Sunday and evenings, we didn't get the opportunity as it was always closed when we tried. It was middle of January though - maybe try later in the season?

The place is well presented and has a homely feel, service was quick and the staff were pleasant. The food was good and very good value for money.

During our stay in Shetland we ate at the cornerstone 3 times. It is new and clean. Great prices and real Coffee! Only negative is the service. Varies hugely depending on which member of staff you get. Also portion size of oatcakes & mackerel pate varied from massive to not enough. However the cafe is a huge asset to the village and I would recommend it overall.

What a lovely place! Warm, cosy, welcoming and feels like home, the staff is very attentive to every request and there is great food including cheesecake to die for. This is a must for food lovers!

After 3 days of mediochre coffee in the Shetland isles I stopped for a coffee at this cafe and was pleasantly surprised to find coffee of the highest quality

Open Sundays in Scalloway!!! Superb food. More like a restaurant than a cafe. Newly opened and interesting modern decor. They do not have a license yet but you can take your own alcohol and they will provide you with glasses.

We had fish and chips fish was good chip where just a chilled chip or frozen and tasteless pea with squeeze bottle of tomato sauce it's a pity that very few places in Shetland do fresh home cut chip instead of just out of a bag not that hard as there are machine that can do it peel them and cut them

Decided to try here for lunch one Saturday. Service was quick and efficient but lacked enthusiasm. The café was very clean and furniture modern with nice décor. We felt it was too cramped, resulting in one diner almost getting my elbow in her lunch as we left :( the food on offer for lunch was not as desired... And we felt very heavy on the mayo! Unfortunately what will put us off going back was also the noise - it was a busy Saturday which is lovely to see but it carried the whole way through the café making it quite hard to have a good catch up and peaceful lunchtime experience...
