Well appointed restaurant with fantastic views. We had a lunch and a dinner there. For dinner, venison, duck and pavlova all delicious. Cranachan ice cream very tasty but not what we would expect cranachan to be. Service perfectly reasonable. All very good, but not 5* excellent. Would go again.

Last night of our stay in Lerwick and looking for a suitable venue for a special dinner. The Bay Brasserie missed badly on some counts and delivered on others. First signs of problems arose when we wanted to sit in the bar for pre-dinner drinks; this seemed to alarm the staff, who said they'd look for someone to man the bar. A charming youth appeared, and seemed genuinely keen to help, but clearly knew nothing about the bar or its contents. A request for a gin and tonic was met with a vacant stare, and when we pointed it out on the shelf we received a glass with gin, but no ice. Requests for red wine induced the same stare, until we pointed out the right bottles. In the restaurant, we were greeted and taken to a table with fabulous sea views. Our waitress arrived, of a similar age to the bar person, and took our orders - mixed starters and followed by three venisons and a sirloin steak with a pepper sauce. Pleasant and attentive to a fault, our waitress shared an apparent lack of training with the bar person - slapping the steak knives and extra cutlery down in a heap with no thought of presentation, and delivering the wine - a fine primitivo - already uncorked and not offering us a chance to test it. The food however was very good indeed; the venison cooked as requested, tender, flavoursome and with a lovely sauce, and the steak cooked perfectly to medium with a perfect pepper sauce. The chips with the steak were fine, as were the side order of fries for those with venison. We found room for desserts - sticky toffee pudding and Cranachan ice cream, both of which went down very well. It could have been a wonderful fitting final evening for the holiday, but the hotel really needs to ensure its junior staff are better trained; we felt embarrassed on their behalf and they clearly felt a little wretched. There were more experienced staff members around who could have mentored and supervised both the barmaid and waitress, who had all the right essential qualities required in hospitality, but needed polishing.

We chose the Bay Brasserie for a special anniversary dinner based on its location and some positive reviews we had read. You could not fault the ambience, but then that was helped by the location and the stunning sea view. Unfortunately that was where the positives ended! I elected not to have a starter (as i had eyed up the Amaretto Pavlova on the desert menu - more about that later) my husband had the White Pudding Fritters, simple chunks of white pudding battered and deep fried, ok as far as it goes - perhaps the pea shoots were added to try to give it some elegance! For mains I had the venison steak - a bit on the tough side, but I am aware venison can be, but it was a nice flavour: the side of veg had been shown some heat but not a lot, still rather that than the other and mushy veg although I did think i might need a saw to cut the broccoli stalks. My husbands on the other hand was dreadful, ballotine of chicken that was so tough in his words it was like cutting a Dunlop trainer! And tasteless to boot! They had no problem or argument replacing it though. The Amaretto Pavlova - I really wish establishments would stop confusing pavlova with meringue nest - pavlova is mallow, crip on the outside squidgy on the inside - this was a meringue next filled with a fluffed up tasteless cream, some chocolate shavings on top and allegedly a cappuccino sauce. It really tasted like a watered down chocolate drizzle over a meringue nest with cream - something a 8 year old could have knocked up at home with some Tesco meringues, a tin of squirty cream and a squirt of chocolate sauce - but then again it wasn't Tesco meringues, they are bigger. I had advised the waiter I would want coffee to follow the pud - it arrived at the same time! Fortunately the pud was quick to consume so the coffee was still warm when I got to it. We had planned on a second coffee and brandies but before we could draw breath the waiter had clicked the cup away simply saying "finished" - no offer to get us anything further - a good upselling opportunity missed! All in all apart from the view and the company a disappointing evening.

I had quite a bad experience at this restuarant. Florance, our waiter, didn’t seem best pleased to serve us. And having all worked in hospitality, we initially exchanged amused glances at her stroppy attitude. However, this did become an issue. While my two friends both ate main meals, I opted for two starters instead. Mainly because I struggle with an eating disorder, but also because I simply was not awfully hungry. Florance questioned my choice of two starters and when I confidently assured her, she laughed at me. With no attempt to hide her snicker. As previously mentioned, eating is not particularly easy for me, so this was a bit of a nightmare. Horribly embarrassed, I started crying and left my two friends at the table to hide in the loo. I’ve lived with my eating for many years and rarely get embarrassed. I’ve had many reactions but never have I been blatantly laughed at by a moody waiter. A right shame as well as the food was great, I imagine we would’ve had a lovely time, had it not been for Florance. I also did tell the receptionist while my friends were eating, and while she was apologetic she did try to tell me that it didn’t happen or I misunderstood the situation which wasn’t the best reaction. I asked for the comments to be passed to the manager and we think we saw this exchange but the manager did not come and speak with us - although it’s possible he was not aware of the situation when we were leaving.

We visited for the first time in a long while. The menu has been altered, for the better I would say. The entire experience was first class. The food is well made, well presented and good value. No pretence about the menu, good, solid food. As we have seen in other places, good food can be let down by service, not here. The staff were simply superb. They’ve clearly been well taught, attentive when required, with professionalism, a smile and great manner.

9 of us came for a birthday lunch - 5 adults and 4 children. The menu is varied, and there is a separate one for the youngsters. Adults all had different choices and all were happy. The children also were able to mix and match what they had - the staff were very helpful. An excellent experience, and they brought in the birthday cake (provided by us) right on cue, with plates and forks. Very good value too!

The theme of this review is that the menu I had seen on-line and the restaurant description led me to believe this was a more refined dining experience than it turned out to be The menu is interesting and varied but the dishes we tasted didn't quite deliver on the expectations set. The goats cheese bon bons were claggy and needed a reformat to be lighter on the palate. I wasn't convinced that home-made sorbet particularly complemented the cheese but it certainly helped wash it from the corners of my mouth where it had stuck resolutely. The venison stroganoff promised a feast of flavours but I found it somewhat prosaic. Finally, I doubt the meringue at the heart of the pavlova had been made on the day of our visit and was indistinguishable from the rock hard nests you can buy in packs in Sainsburys. The accompanying gin and lime mousse did little to lift the dish. On the plus side, my vegetarian partner enjoyed the banana blossom which she hadn't tried before but certainly gave a big thumbs up to. Contrary to the website description of the staff as "well trained, friendly and knowledgeable" we found service lacking in confidence, patchy and slightly timid. My partner was particularly annoyed that the menu was presented to us without telling her that the treacle and whiskey salmon starter was not available, even though we were amongst the first diners to be seated. As a result, she went without a starter as there was no substitute offered. Let me be clear, this was not a bad meal, just a meal that promised more than it delivered and could and should have been a lot better with a bit more care.

First, the Portugese waitress is so friendly. The food is bad, unfortunately. It is a restaurant in the Lerwick hotel. For example, the steak was thin, chewy and not as ordered medium rare. It was well done. The venison was so chewy. Salat without any dressing. The chefs duck liver parfait is nor a parfait you may think about. It is minced liver and pretty blunt.

In the last week I have been here three times, twice for dinner, and once for lunch. The choice of venue was not mine as I was in 3 different groups. This first visit was as a guest in a party of 29 - we had our own room and the service was excellent. The menu was a restricted version of their full very comprehensive menu, but the only problem this created was that I was very keen on each of the 4 starters/mains/sweets! I settled for the smoked haddock and bacon chowder - superb - and then the venison steak. Why I plumped for the venison was because there was a broccoli and blue cheese puree! A year or two back I had a leek and blue cheese sauce with meat here and I enjoyed it so much that my wife now makes her version of it. We plan the same with this new unusual concoction. Cheesecake sweet - very light and tasty. Rather than go into too much detail, suffice to say that my other dinner and lunch were of an equally high standard, and I can thoroughly recommend coming here for a quality meal from a very wide menu choice, at very fair prices.

Just returned from what was meant to be an exceptional culinary evening with my great friends! The ambiance is lovely with fantastic views of the sea & the staff were great, so far all good. Then the food, I ordered the mussels for a starter & it basically had no flavour other than coconut, but they were OK! I cannot speak for the rest of the company, but I'd ordered the fillet steak (rare) for my main, which it was not (I would say medium rare), I was very unhappy & did say so, so not fantastic value for the money! If I had to sum it up, it was like the female toilets, looks amazing when you walk in (Aaaahhhh!!!) Pretty Victoria's secrets stylee with a chaise lounge & then through the door into the cubicles (EEEERrrrrr!!!) public toilet experience! All aesthetics & no actual substance! Shame.....

It has been said elsewhere that it is difficult to find quality restaurants in Shetland and, if the Lerwick Hotel restaurant is an example, this may be so. The dining room is comfortable enough and has splendid views over the bay, as others have said. However, service was mixed, with one staff member lacking the interpersonal skills the job requires. The food was mediocre and could have been improved so easily: Warmed bread with soup and some well cooked vegetables with the mains. Maybe, we have higher expectations given other reviews or just went on a bad day!

The restaurant itself is really modern and looks great. Menu was varied and they offer a good kids menu. All food was delicious, albeit a little pricey in some cases, but the quality of the food made up for this. I had the halibut which was lovely, as was the ravioli it came with - my only issue was that the bones were left in which made it slightly less enjoyable for me. 1 had steak, 1 had lamb, 1 had monkfish, 1 steak sandwich, some had chicken and 1 had the duck. A big barn of a place, so lacking in atmosphere a bit. 'Nouvelle cuisine' type food. Well cooked and served. A bit strange they had no chilled prosecco - run out of room in the fridge? - but a warm one in a bucket of ice did almost as well. A nice bar attached to it as well. There are windows overlooking the bay but the tables there were full so we had a spacious booth instead. There is an extensive menu which can sometimes mean poorer quality food but not the case here. Everything was beautifully presented and tasted amazing! Not surprising, the Shetland mussels were plump, fresh and very sweet, as was the monkfish. The chicken and chorizo terrine was excellent, as was the chicken roulade. We ordered a side of chef's veg and one was definitely enough - a good selection of perfectly cooked veg :)The staff, without exception, were friendly, chatty and helpful, full of local information and insights, as well as being attentive and aware of our needs. There was a good selection of gluten/dairy/allergy free dishes on the menu - plenty to have a choice, rather than feeling you are stuck with one dish!We had a relaxing, tasty and most enjoyable night at the brasserie and highly recommend it!

Before we could even get our bottoms to the chairs we were asked what would we want to drink?! I could be being petty but I really do think restaurants should wait at least 5 minutes before asking. At least let you get your coat off!Anyway, I ordered a filet steak, chips, onion rings and brandy sauce. I was fussy and asked for the handcut chips which are nicer than the frozen bag chips they usually serve with this dish. They were more than happy to provide this swap for me. The other two family members ordered pork and chicken (can't remember the details of their dishes) anyway my steak was lovely. Cooked perfectly and I couldn't fault it. However, my two family members weren't happy. Both of theirs was over cooked, didn't have enough sauce and their portions were very small. I did feel bad for them!!Mixed reviews but I'd certainly go back (maybe go on a less busy day than a weekend and the other dishes may be better)

They do some really nice, imaginative food here, but for a long time my family had a problem with it. We have two non-meat-eaters and their choice was limited because a lot of the dishes, even those that were fish-based or vegetable, had extraneous bits of meat added - pancetta in peas, chorizo on fish (?). Eventually I emailed about it and got the reply that they didn't mind leaving stuff off if asked - of course, being British, I would never have considered asking. Now, however, our choice is much improved by knowing this. i still think the adding pointless meat for flavouring is a bit over-fussy and suggests a cook not at ease with herbs and spices. But there are some excellent choices, they cook well and the desserts are more imaginative and less stodgy than in most Shetland restaurants. Oh, and they have great views!

Probably the best place on Shetland and in Lerwick to eat in! It also offers a really good selection of food

We booked last minute for an early dinner for a party of 9. Despite this, the staff were fully prepared for our arrival. The service was friendly and welcoming and we were all delighted with our food. I can wholeheartedly recommend this restaurant.

We had dinner here one night and it was excellent. There was a good choice on the menu and a comprehensive wine list. The service was friendly and efficient. We had a table by the window which had a lovely view over the bay. If in Lerwick again we would definitely be back.

Went for a meal here as a non resident. Food was good. Service a bit cool. Sort of made to feel a bit second class as non resident.

On arriving at the Lerwick Hotel we were not sure what to expect as the interior photos we had seen on the website did not seem to match the outside, however on entering our concerns disappeared. The restaurant was beautifully presented. The staff were attentive and offered guidance on our choices. We opted for the seafood platter and venison, both were well presented and lived up to expectation.

We were shown to our table by a friendly lass ,given menus and wine list and left to settle well almost ,nanno seconds later the waiter appeared asking what we wanted to drink ! Having decided this we were left with the issue of what to eat , some nice choices but nothing that went O M G I'd never attempt to make that at home . I eventually went for the fillet steak Balmoral which was described as having a brandy and truffle sauce ......No the plate of sauce had the fillet steak struggling to peep out from under the sauce which while it had a beautiful taste was uber creamy and just a tad overly , my Turkish delight creme brulee was a saucer with a nice egg custard with enormous lumps of Turkish delight within , to describe it as brulee was, I feel unjustified as it had clearly barely been introduced to a blow torch . I like a good CRACK when I dive I to a brulee , this delivered not a squeak ! My husband's meal was equally uninspired , so so steak cooked well but again nothing brilliant , his chocolate Guinness cake had the texture of microwaved sand and don't get me started on the ice cream , ice definitely being the operative word here . So all in all a nice ambience lovely view attentive but not intrusive staff the exception being the over eager sommelier, but food that sadly didn't really live up to expectations

This modern brasserie within the Lerwick hotel, has just the right mix of traditional and modern Scottish cuisine.E tables are well spaced out, so that you feel quite private yet part of the buzz. We ate there three times during our stay in Shetland, and we liked the booth style seating better than the tables by the window. There were plenty of choices on the menu, yet all were brought to the table quite quickly and were obviously made on the premises. The presentation was excellent, so inviting. The vegetarian choices were unusual and very tasty. For example, I had a stack of portobello mushroom, feta cheese, gnocchi, on a barley and beetroot risotto! Whilst my husband had a stack of bannock, bacon, black pudding, smoked haddock and poached egg on a creamy chive sauce! DELICIOUS! The starters were equally interesting. For the more traditional diner , there were plenty of choices of minute steaks in a bun and so on. Wines were good as were choices of cider and beers. I would thoroughly recommend dining there. Prices were very reasonable too.

I went here for lunch with my husband for my birthday, although we hadn't booked we were seated immediately. The service manager was pleasant and helpful allowing for slight changes to the menu to suit my needs without any fuss. The meal was delicious we both had the fish but the waitress was pretty miserable and scared us away. I don't think she was enjoying her job, she offered us dessert but we declined due to this and went elsewhere for it. Again the service manager couldn't have been more helpful and for that I raised it to 4 stars.

We ended up coming here for my dad's birthday meal and it was top notch. I had the spicy prawns for starter, a sirloin steak for main and passion fruit cheesecake for dessert. None of us could fault our meals, and even though the waiters had advised there would be a delay with each course (we were never told why) the service was still quick. My only complaint is that my fries were served in a little ceramic tub which I never think looks great, I would have preferred them on the plate with the rest of my meal. Had never been before but will definitely be back.

This is probably my favourite place to eat in Lerwick. The staff are friendly, and are very helpful. We went for a family birthday, and my partner was in a temporary wheelchair, and they were very professional about this and willing to help. The food is lovely, with a wide variety of dishes on the menu. I must admit, I have never had something here that I haven't liked. For a nice 3 course meal, the price is fair. After all, you do pay for quality. It's much much better now they have decorated and revamped the menu than it used to be, so don't let it's old reputation put you off.

Long overdue visit to Lerwick and the Lerwick Hotel. The welcome by friendly staff was appreciated as was the refurbishment of the restaurant, really very nice and modern. The food was most enjoyable, but the highlight must be the superb cheese board - certainly the best we have enjoyed in Shetland. Thank you.

So good we ate there twice. The food is very good quality, especially the fresh seafood and desserts- for meat eaters they do excellent steaks. Very modern décor, comfortable - could do for business , romance or a family celebration. Drinks reasonable for a hotel. The Service however, is somewhat uneven and some staff clearly had never been told to smile, welcome customers and wipe tables as and when needed. Twice we had to ask for a table to be cleaned before we ordered. Having said that- we enjoyed it and came back again Sit in the window and you can watch the pedestrian world go by along the windwept harbour- and Watch the free diving display by dive bombing gannats.

Ordered mixed carvery. Very disappointed to be honest, beef was tough, Yorkshire puddings weren't served as advertised, had to ask for them again and when I got them they were undercooked. The chicken was served as a leg rather than breast which isn't something you expect for a carvery! Dessert was decent enough and waiting staff OK, but didn't look motivated. Also charged for an extra soft drink which we didn't receive, but didn't realise this until we had left and was too late. Wouldn't go back.

We had Shetland Mussels as a starter, this dish was ok. But the maincourses where really bad! Deep fried haddock tasted almost all right, but the chips that came with the fish were soft and untasty. Ballotine of Chicken was a disaster! The chicken were dry and tasted nothing, the gravy tasted like black currantsauce and was thick and undelicious. The potatoes were overcooked inside and with dark skin like rubber, almost impossible to cut. Obviously this dish had been kept warm for a long time. The staff was polite and profesionale, and we did not have to pay for the chicken, but had to order coffee three times before we got it. Don't go to this restaurant!

Tutto buono!

My husband and I ate here 2 years ago and the food was very good then so on our first night back in Lerwick we made it our destination for our evening meal. It was fantastic! The Brasserie has undergone a fabulous renovation since our last visit and now it would not feel out of place in trendy cities. Decor, food, views - all exceptional. Staff were unobtrusive yet available, all were polite and friendly. You don't come to Shetland for the weather, but the food is locally sourced and can be fantastic!

We took meals there on two separate nights. The food came very well prepared & presented. The portions were adequate but a main & sweet is not likely to over face a pensioner appetite.A good selection of house wines at under £18 per bottle. We normally travel half board so I am not really qualified to comment on cost. Four mains, four sweets, a bottle of wine one night & two 250ml glasses on the other came to under £120.

This was an excellent stop for breakfast (wish we had gone for lunch too). Had bacon and sausage whilst wife had bacon and egg - cooked from fresh and were very tasty Had a decent choice of jacket potato and fillings available too It’s not luxurious - down to earth with great food

When you first realise that the building is actually a shop you are delighted to have found somewhere to buy food or in fact almost anything else you can think of. The bakery section is particularly welcome for hungry explorers. It’s a shame they don’t still have the DIY cafe.

Its a great wee stop on the road north. The cafe is cosy, quaint and full of nice cards and gifts. There is a nice range of different herbal teas and the usual teas/ coffees. The cakes all looked fab, and we had the fluffiest lightest fruit scones I've ever had the pleasure to eat - the portion of cream was generous and the locally made rhubarb jam was delicious too!
