The Chequers in South Cambridgeshire

For a small local village pub, the meals at this restaurant were surprisingly good and well worth trying. First the menu was very comprehensive (once you realise the menu is two sided) plus there was a Specials board. I started with a carrot soup which had a very mild curried flavour and it was one of the best soups I have had in a restaurant. My other half had the whitebait which was much better than most I have had with a smaller number of really quite plump fish. The main courses were equally good with the sausage and mash made with real potato and sausages that actually tasted meaty. A very good meal and better than we expected. Downside? The acoustics on the room were such that it appeared very noisy even though it probably wasn’t. Whether they can fit sound deadening baffles somewhere is a question for the management. But don’t let that put you off.

Been there a few times, food is always spot on. Today we brought the kids along to try the pizza, kids were very happy with their pepperoni pizza and ham pizza, we think the pizzas here are like a rare gem, must try. Burgers are great too. Outside areas are a plus, nicely decorated and neat. Good free parking lot! ;D

Pizza is great. Beer selection is pretty good and rotates. Could use more cider! Garden is nice to sit in.

The Chequers provided the catering after my mother-in-law's funeral and were excellent: helpful and responsive to requests, good value and excellent buffet. I always judge a buffet by the standard of its sausage rolls and these were excellent! Thanks to John, Luca and the team.

We attended this pub for a wedding party, the buffet were brilliant with lots of tasty food. No one left hungry as there was was plenty of food available! I took a photo of these beautiful grape vines which were all lit up in the garden.

My family and I recently visited this cozy restaurant and we had an absolutely delightful experience. The burgers were perfectly cooked with crispy fries, coleslaw and crunchy salad. The presentation was inviting and the portion sizes were generous. Overall, this restaurant is a great spot for a casual meal with family or friends. We'll definitely be returning soon to try more from their menu!

Good local pub with a varied range of beers, including local brewers. Food is good and the pizzas from their outdoor cob oven are fantastic.

Visited for the 1st time with my husband for a meal and a drink couple of weeks ago. Pub was under external refurb. Main entrance blocked by the construction workers, no info how to get in or if it's even open. We went round and someone told us how to get in. We sat outside. Food was served nearly cold, very average nearly poor flavor ( we had burgers). After approx an hour we had to move as construction workers started painting walls just right next to our table without any warning or questioning if we could move. Won't be back.

A terrific pub with great service. The food was delicious with a great gluten free selection. Lots of thoughtful additions including games, books and products in the bathroom. Couldn’t recommend highly enough.

A unwelcoming sad atmosphere is, what greet you when you enter the Cheques! Lack of identity ,sad decor, bleak colours. Poor quality curtains,faux flowers,cheap air fresheners & bad lighting. Character void bar manager, indifferent teenager servers void of interest and training in any form of customer service, much like the bar manger ! This local village pub has great bones, but has decided not to become a community pub, as the opening times does not allow anyone to attend before 5pm. So sad as it is the only pub, in the village with a possibility to sit outside in a garden like environment. The rigid approach to the divide to indoor dining and non dining is just a waste of space. A complete misinterpretation of the word PUBLIC HOUSE. It seems that the owner does not care for the village, therefore they provide this sparse approach to hospitality . Please love your pub and let the people of the village love and enjoy it too! This week visit will be my final one, until this place receives some highly deserved attention!

We stopped by quite late whilst ran route to accommodation nearby. Busy but welcoming staff, clean and warm, with a diverse menu. We chose sausages and mash, which was flavoursome and served with mash and greens, and the vegetarian lasagne which was delicious and served with a side salad. Well priced food, served promptly, tasty and well presented. Definitely worth the visit.

Yesterday pizza day, good and exceptional price

Well the first time we have stopped here to eat lunch. We had not booked because we had cycled to the Black Horse Rampton, but we could not eat there as they were fixing a problem with their kitchen. The beer was great and we had a choice of 3 real ales. They were all in great condition , as was all of the food we ordered! There were 6 of us, and we all ordered different meals from the menu and they all came out together. The weather gods were good to us too, and we managed to cycle back to Haddenham in the dry.

We had the roast dinner it was excellent and wonderful place to eat and to drink good and helpful staff lovely food AND good drink excellent service

Where to start... lovely village pub serving quality food. Carpark for 8-10 vehicles and plenty of roadside parking. The staff are very friendly and accommodating, the regulars I met too! Best of all the food was great. Camembert with apple chutney and garlic bread was a tasty combo. On the specials board was a pistachio pizza, well worth a try people. The duck with red wine was also very enjoyable and had a decent ratio of veg with it. Steak was cooked medium rare as requested and was a decent cut. Accompanied with crispy full of flavour chips and a cracking pepper sauce. Finally the profiteroles with a chocolate sauce. The sauce was milk chocolate with a dash of dark, warm and runny with large profiteroles perfectly chilled cream. Devoured. Will return.

Absolutely fantastic village pub, food, team and atmosphere. Nothing is too much and always made to feel welcome. We booked a large table for food and drink at short notice and were a accommodated perfectly, THANK YOU

My boyfriend and I had a lovely dinner, the food was delicious, the waitresses Amelia and Chloe were absolutely lovely and made sure we had everything we needed!

Great service, nice atmosphere. We visited them after the boxing day so they only offered pizzas and it was great. They have gluten-free pizzas, too.

If you are in the village of cottenham, just north of Cambridge, you could do a lot worse than to visit The Chequeres pub. This place does phenomenal food and great pizzas. My family and myself enjoy a meal here every so often.

Came across this pub on a visit to Cambridge. Lovely local atmosphere and waitress seated us to the table. T bone steak was in special and wasn't disappointed! Portion was huge with all the trimmings and home cooked chips and onion rings. Great service and a credit to the chef that took time to come to the table and chat. Will definitely be visiting again.

My partner and I saw this pub en route to a campsite we were staying at. Decided to see if they had a spare table for 2 for a Sunday Roast. They were able to oblige and we chose starters of whitebait /creamy garlic mushrooms followed by Roast Beef/Roast Pork. It was one of the best Roast lunches I've ever had. It was so fresh and tasty. No frozen veg!! The beer was also good and the landlord friendly. We would definitely visit again when we're in the area.

I didn't get reply to my email question. The Sunday roast was a disappointment as the roasties were new potatoes not traditional old potatoes. The meat wasn't of good quality. Sorry I won't be back

We decided to try Chequers after hearing new management had stepped in and were really glad we did. The atmosphere was welcoming and friendly. The food was delicious. We had the Parma ham pizza and the salmon as well as a few starters. Good portion sizes and excellent quality. Would definitely recommend.

Nice and lovely local pub with best in Cambridgeshire area steaks. Loyal stuff and nice atmosphere. I'm known that this pub got new owners , so wish good luck and don't change quality.

Apologies for the half-eaten photos, but when the food is this good, it's hard to hold back! Absolutely delightful experience at The Chequers pub! From the perfectly cooked seabass to the mouthwatering grilled rump with crispy fried onion, every bite was a treat. The Regina pizza was a burst of flavors, and the Eton mess was a sweet finale that left me craving for more. Impeccable service, cozy ambiance, and a menu that's a true culinary delight.

An unplanned visit whilst out cycling. The beer and food were very good. The staff were attentive without being intrusive and no request seemed to be any trouble. We had a small discrepancy with the bill but the waitress knew exactly what we'd consumed and fixed the bill in no time. Really pleased we'd visited and would certainly return next time we're in the area.

Came here for a Sunday lunch with my mum. Lovely staff, fast service. Large portions of freshly cooked food. We had the roast lamb and beef and shared sticky toffee pudding. Very reasonably priced too. Would definitely recommend.

One of the best Pizzas we had. They hosted party for little ones to learn how to make pizza and we ordered for adults and their dough and pizza sauce is delicious which gives great flavour to Pizza. Our daughter loved the pizza and had great afternoon. Max was great for taking our order. Chef Luka is amazing , look out for him.

We went for dinner as a party of 6 to treat some special guests visiting all the way from Canada. We ordered various starters and mains to sample a variety of dishes on the menu, including some on the specials board. What a lovely feast it was! We especially loved the velvety celeriac veloute with mushrooms ravioli starter, duck confit with red wine jus, grilled salmon with avocado salad, and the Chequers pizza (where savoury smoked cheese meets sweet caramelised onion). Not the usual "pub grub", all done properly and in decent portion sizes. Nobody went home hungry! The venue is truly family-friendly, with proper high chairs for toddlers and clean restrooms stocked with free sanitary products for ladies and babies. 🥰

It's completely changed since last year, still do pizza but the others food is also great. The ambience is lovely and it's always merrily busy

Here now and the women’s toilets are fab! They provide free sanitary products and hygiene stuff. Nice to see :) Shame the pizzas aren’t on (they start next Monday) but the barman in the blue hoodie is nice x

Really nice pint of Guinness or two,enjoyed after the 2.6 mile walk from the B&B that we was put up in for the night by are company. Lovely pub with friendly staff and nice customers. Would recommend to anyone staying in the area to go in and have a beer or two. Unfortunately fortunately my phone died before I got to take any more pictures.

Found pieces of plastic in my pizza and when informing the staff, they shrugged and said that they do not know about using this in the kitchen. Discourteous service. One thing we are sure of, will never visit again.

Dined here with a mate after a 40 mile bike. We were hungry and thirsty and weren't in the mood for anything fancy. The Chequers delivered. We went into some detail with Dom who looked after us as to whether the steak and ale pie was a proper pie with pastry all round or merely a pretend pie, namely a bowel of stew with a bit of puff pastry chucked onto top. Dom assured us that the pie was a proper pie and it did not disappoint when it arrived. Just a couple of niggles, the veg that came with the pie was just a small ramakin of peas although I'm sure a side order of veg was available on the sides menu had I have looked. Also the music playing was what I'd normally play on a sunny day with the roof down, I'd have preferred something in the folk/Americana genre but that's highly subjective of course. Overall a good evening with good food and beer and Dom looked after us really well.

Scott (Bar Manager) gave both Anna and myself a first class service, the Chef Claudiuos gave us the best rack of lamb this side of Cambridge, so Service, excellent , Food will cooked and presented, another excellent, 10 out of 10, not too heavy on the pocket

Quiet pub but good food and drinks

As a Cottenham resident, I am very glad to see that the Chequers is doing good food again. It's not haut cuisine, but it's very nice being able to walk to a restaurant and have a decent meal. I hope the Cottenhamites will see this and start to use it again.

The food and service was excellent, as in there Sunday lunches. The Bar Staff were so friendly and the atmosphere was so good. A great night had by all.

Tuvimos un almuerzo familiar de cumpleaños para una celebración del 96º cumpleaños. Diecinueve de nosotros de 3 meses a 96 años fueron muy bienvenidos. La comida y el servicio fueron excepcionales. Habíamos reservado previamente y la mesa estaba arreglada y la cumpleañera se hizo un gran alboroto. Todos disfrutamos mucho nuestro almuerzo.

We haven't been in for a while so popped in on the off chance. We both went for the roast beef. A good sized portion beautifully presented and cooked. The only downside was there wasn't room for dessert.

Teníamos la hamburguesa de la casa, que estaba bien presentada y de primera calidad. La cerveza estaba bien cuidada y una gran selección de vinos. El personal era muy amable y el pub tenía un ambiente agradable. Vale la pena una visita.

¡Vaya que fue un almuerzo decepcionante! Había reservado una mesa para el almuerzo del sábado, pero aún así, cuando llegó nuestro grupo de 7, la casera se sorprendió de vernos y la mesa no estaba preparada. Tuvimos que esperar más de una hora para nuestra comida, tiempo durante el cual no hubo explicación ni disculpas por la demora. Cuando llegó la comida fue muy decepcionante: ingredientes baratos, insípidos, chips poco cocidos y pequeñas porciones. Mi carbonara no tenía signos de huevos o crema en la salsa y parecía tener trozos de tocino barato picado encima. ¡Nunca pidas el pan de ajo! Fue horrible y el pan de ajo con queso era aún peor (gomoso y grasiento).No pedimos budines después de ver algunas rodajas de tiramisú de aspecto triste en la nevera de budines.En general, el pub no había sido arreglado desde la noche anterior. Había vasos sucios en las mesas y el bar y los rollos de papel higiénico no habían sido reabastecidos.

Avoid. It pains me to give this place such a poor review but I am only being honest. Went for lunch with my family and found the menu to be both strange and disappointing. The burgers for example are all now smothered in a sugary sauce: barbecue, sweet chilli, you name it, it is both present and unecessary. The burgers were hot but the chips were stone cold. Disappointing. Gave them a second chance when I revisited with my friend; we both ordered the double burger but both burgers arrived as singles, so we sent them back. The chips were cold. The burgers were returned as doubles but my friend's (now double) burger was lacking the sauce (I had requested no sauce). Sent it back and got sauce. Eventually. I attempted to order a glass of tap water to be told that this was not available(!!!!) so I was given no option but to buy a bottle of water. How this place is still in business I genuinely do not know. Just go somewhere else.

Erratically-unreliable closing times, and a high turnover of poorly-trained bar staff on minimum wage with little grasp of what hospitality means, has seen a virtual boycott of the pub by locals who used to consume enough beer of an evening to ensure it didn't remain in the barrel beyond its sell-by date. Published closing times on Google are: Monday closing: 11.00pm Tuesday closing: 11.00pm Friday–Saturday closing: 2.30am Sun closing: 10.30pm None of these published times on Google can be relied on. If you turn up before these closing times, you're likely to be greeted by bar staff with a less-than-welcoming "I'm sorry, we're closed!" The Chequers saving grace is its authentic pizza oven and a Sicilian pizza (Sfincione) chef that means the takeaway pizzas are to die for...

Small pub, but quite roomy inside. Pretty big eating area and lots of food options, they even offer take away options (pizza!). Staff a little... distracted, but still catered to needs. Parking outside also.

First visit this weekend. We were really looking forward to our food after looking at the menu - they seem to have a great selection of really authentic Italian pizzas. When the food came out we were really gutted though! Plates dirty, one pizza was raw... cheese hadn’t even melted. The other was burnt on one side - which I can put up with as I know that’s a side effect of the real wood oven. Even the chips were rubbery. They weren’t freshly cooked for our order. The whole place just seems grubby; rubbish on the floor, untidy garden area. Tables were not cleared. Staff were lovely and friendly ... but not very attentive at all.Regretted spending money there. Will not return. Would not recommend.
