Great location for a lovely old pub. Let's hope it does well, but you might need to get some good ales in to attract customers. I hope you start serving food again. The last time we ate there the food was excellent.

Fabulous place, so welcoming and helpful, landlord produced old maps for us to find places in the vicinity where our ancestors had lived, the music just up our street, 60s era of course and this made for a very enjoyable afternoon for us two old women friends eager to join in the singing and very impressed with the local clientele who knew all the words to songs we sang in the sixties but they themselves not alive in that era!! We didn’t stay over so not able to comment on rooms. But definitely worth a visit again and yes the views from the carpark spectacular. We visited a month ago.

Held a wake here, the landlord could not do enough to support us on the day. An excellent buffet provided, they catered to what we wanted but a set menu, provided whatever drinks we wanted and looked after us on the day. Great venue and great service.

If you need the toilet, check for the existence of toilet roll before things get tricky. Very tricky.

Never actually drank in the pub, but what an amazing beer garden.... it is the actual castle!

Absolutely stunning views from this icon of a venue. Family friendly inn, very well preserved amongst the ruins of Halton Castle. Enjoyed a function here with 30 people, very cosy but still well above expectations. Well done! Marked in respect of the late Brain Lambert ❤️

Unfortunately, at 2:30 p.m., we were informed that it was closed today.

Popped down today for some food, brought the binoculars with the kids, doors where locked but oddly there were people sat inside having a drink, possibly shut down or on the verge? Either way, no signs up & no one inside bothered to come explain to us or another few couples what was happening!

Lovely little walk round. The only issue is you have to go to the pub to go inside the castle but other than that lovely views well recommended

The Castle is a lovely pub in the grounds of the ruins of the medieval Halton Castle.

You can see pretty much 360 degree around the local areas of Cheshire and countryside from up here, there is some great views in the outdoor seating areas and also some walls from the old settlement are still there to look at and walk around. A great place to relax and find out a little history of Runcorn and Halton.

What a great pub with one of the best beer gardens I have ever visited. Not many pubs can say their beer garden is a castle with amazing views .only popped in for a coke and snack on a hot day but was able to sit and enjoy the outdoor space . Amazing 👍

We phoned the castle today to ask if they did food and did we need to book we were advised that they did food and that we didn’t need to book So we headed straight there for lunch On a arrival we were advised the don’t have a chef so no food words fail me

One of the best pubs in Runcorn and the beer pub is in a castle. What more do you need.

Called in on a Saturday early evening, the music was very very loud! Walked in & walked straight out, can't imagine having a meal in that noise, it looks really civilised on the website, maybe it was some kind of disco? It certainly turned away our custom.

We went to book them for our Christmas party an was treated badly the service we got was horrible soon as we said how many kids we was having there an that we would do our own food due to having a few kids with sensory processing difficulties autism an only eat certain foods due to the health problems we was shut down fast wouldn't recommend or look at booking again

Came here for lunch with family. Beautiful place and surroundings, attached to a castle ruin. Had booked but was no need as the place was quiet and we could sit anywhere. Ordered food and drinks from the small menu. Took a little while for the food to arrive but that could be because it all looked and tasted freshly cooked. Delicious. Portions were huge and none of us could finish! After the food we went out the back door to see the ruins, these are over several levels with views over Halton and Runcorn and all the way to Liverpool. There are picnic benches so you could spend a few hours here enjoying the peace.

Went for meal with my wife and two friends. Very friendly staff, lovely food well presented. Only minor criticism is the menu is a bit limited.

Excellent lunch, we both had the Katsu fish, chips and peas. It’s a big meal, you defo get your moneys worth.

Great service! It has a nice relaxed atmosphere. There are a lot of pics on the walls of Runcorn as it used to be, also about the history of the castle. I haven't eaten here yet. I don't know if they serve food in the evening. They don't do meals on Monday and Tuesday lunch time.Toilets could do with refurbishing and cleaning. Over all it's a nice friendly place to go for a quiet drink. I didn't stay there so I don't know about rooms.

Set at the castle in Halton gives great views and scenery. Good priced drinks and food.

I've never had a nice meal here. Tried again and got really burned but raw chips! How does that happen?.Very tiny inside but outside is really nice if you don't mind listening to foul language. Shame because it's got nice views of the new bridge. 1 star for food and 5 for location.

The food is excellent. Under new management, so big changes with more events and spaces have been opened up for private and public functions

If you are going to visit the castle, you can park right outside it’s door. Parking is free. The location of the castle, parking and views are a big plus. A big minus for the fact that you can't enter it other than through the pub, which opens from 10 am. A sad sight if you look at the cleanliness and freshness of the bar. Rather, it looks very dirty and dingy. As the castle is part of the restaurant, you can find a lot of glass from broken glasses and tankards on the walls of the castle

Friendly but no doubles bar. Literally went in yesterday. Glass of wine and a glass of coke. £8.35- london prices in Runcorn What a joke!!! Food stopped at 6pm, no crisps, no peanuts left. Left with a sad glass of wine - that was precisley measured out and a glass of ice with some coke in it 🤣🤣🤣

The location itself is magnificent! And its great to read all about the castle and the restaurant. The restaurant itself has a lot of old engraved images, illustrations and photos of the ruins, which really adds to the historical site we're having our meal at! :) We went here on easter Sunday to dine in. Sadly, after ordering, the waiter got back to tell they didn't had hamburgers. (A shame, we were really in for that!) We ordered a different main course, and it was quite the wait to get that served. My starter was a grilled peach with goat cheese, and I was surprised the peach wasn't warm, but fridge cold! Could have been a game changer if it was warm, but it was still enjoyable. They didnt had the 'dirty chips', and we got basic fries instead. The steak was very much enjoyable, but I did not get any sauce with it, and next to 1 tomato and 1 mushroom, there sadly wasn't any vegetables found on the dish. Luckily I got to steal my husband's sauce and mushy peas :) When we were ready to order a dessert, we were told the kitchen was closed (at 19:15 PM). When we got up, got our coats up and went to the bar to pay, we were told we could still have a dessert. Sadly we already made up our minds and just wanted to leave. Thanks for having us! We're looking forward to coming back to try out the hamburger an other day :)

(Easter day) A little disappointing sadly. There wasn't much food on the menu available (Burger for example) and when I settled for fish and chips they said they ran out of chips and would have to provide fries (Frozen). We asked for the dessert menu but were told the kitchen just closed (At 7pm). As we were leaving we asked for the bill and were told that the kitchen was actually open and if we wanted to have dessert but we already had our coats on. It was overall super slow as well unfortunately. The staff were really friendly and I think we just visited on an off day. We're really wanting to try this place again when it's less busy, hoping we can make this a 5* review =)

Quaint old pub- don’t expect shiny stuff. It is small and welcoming, with local people. It is at the top of the hill near the castle ruins. Hence the name; this presents an element of character. We were welcomed and staff and locals engaged with conversation with us. I was pleasantly surprised.

Really friendly staff and atmosphere as soon as we walked into the door. First visit since new owners. Loved our time here. Will definitely visit again.

The castle ruins are worth a visit for the history and the views are spectacular! The Castle pub has good beer and does food, although I didn't try this.

Walking around the perimeter of the castle leads you to imagine how it was when it was a stronghold, with views across the estuary. Sadly, because of covid19, the pub was shut, so we could not get into the inside of the walls. We will go back another day to see what the inner walls are hiding. Finally managed to fulfill our promise to visit when it was open. We had a delicious meal there, celebrating my cousin's birthday. Food and service could not be faulted, and, as it was a chilly day, it was lovely to see a welcoming fire on the hearth.

Went to the Castle for a Sunday lunch to celebrate my birthday . I had the beef Sunday roast and others had the chicken Sunday roast...so delicious and very generous servings. Finished with jam sponge and custard , also delicious 😋. Only downside was the noise coming from a nearby table, nothing rowdy, but we couldn't hear ourselves talk...nothing to do with the pub ....I would highly recommend 👌 👍

Spur of the moment visit, not much of the original castle in view to my knowledge on the inside, nice warm fireplace, excellent friendly service, good food, nice selection of beer, comfortable seating, toilet is big but stalls are kind of small, kind of dim lighting, decent soap will definitely come back for more beer.. Seen adverts for live DJ is this still going on?

An older smaller pub but nice fire burning and great views of the local area from outside. Good service from all the staff, lovely helpful and friendly bar staff. We had a meal, lovely choice on the menu and the food was freshly cooked, a group of us ordered and everyone enjoyed it, compliments to the chef. Even the locals in the pub made us welcome and created a nice atmosphere. Will definitely return.

Nice roast dinner. It is difficult for the chef to prepare entirely fresh food with limited footfall. So I understand the methods used. Veg was more crudités than al dente. Couldnt put a fork through the sprouts. But a good effort that most people would be satisfied with

Don't be put off by basic decor the staff are great and the food is restaurant standard if is chilly would suggest sitting in one of the rooms with a open fire

We had family visiting us for the weekend. We decided the castle looked good..The only food on the menu was a roast. When I asked I was told the chef is not cooking anything else. I chose a burger from the kids menu. When it came the burger was burnt black, like a piece of charcoal. I sent it back. I was then told NO burgers left. By this time I had lost my appetite. I won't be returning. Our family visitors could not believe it.

Not open, suggest ringing first before trying. Nothing on website, Facebook or Google etc to indicate it was anything but open. Disappointing not to be able to Tey the place out.

Didn’t have food here so can’t comment. Nice bar staff nice drinks.Could do with a clean and lick of paint. Ladies toilets need to be re done out, was an awful smell coming from the mens toilets of urine! Nice atmosphere and an old building, as I say needs some TLC

Had a lovely Roast Dinner here on Sunday first visit but will be back again.Staff really pleasant and not a long wait for food which came hot and was very tasty could not fault it.Very reasonably priced as well.

Love this place, it's a great use of a piece of history. Food is excellent, staff are friendly, atmosphere is good. Make sure you get out into the garden to explore the ruins and take in the view. Recommended!

Beautiful historic setting . Roaring fire which was welcoming on this chilli day . Had a fantastic Sunday lunch with the Fam . childrens meals are the usual ,but good portions. Staff very helpful and attentive.will definitely be going again soon .

We had a great lunchtime visit here today, we didn't make a reservation but we were warmly welcomed by Steph, the chef and staff were lovely too and we felt very well looked after. The food was cooked perfectly and so delicious! Highly recommended 😁

This is a great pub to visit due to its historical connections as it once was a Norman castle. If you go in the beer garden you are inside the walls of the castle with a view over the river Mersey. We had the fish & chips with a katsu curry sauce which was very tasty. Staff were friendly too. Well worth seeking out.

Great pub in a very unique setting with excellent views over Runcorn and beyond. I hear you can sometimes access the castle ruins via the pub but we didn't like to ask. If you live in Halton, Frodsham, Warrington etc - this is a surprising gem packed with history. Extra special on sunny day.

If you like a pub with a difference, this is a great place to visit. Charming rustic interior, great food, and about the best beer garden with authentic heritage ruins to explore. Youngsters and young at heart will enjoy the hospitality and the unique views.

I used to come here very regularly until the owner/manager was very rude . He had made me and my brother very uncomfortable and then proceeded to watch us whilst we were outside in the beer garden . His customer service skills definitely need to improve as it is a shame I had to score low . I had tried the pork belly bao buns and they were 5* for me , so congratulations to the chef . The beer garden is massive and it has a great scenic view . I must say it is quite pricey in comparison to other local pubs for both food and drink .

Bit run down drinks were expensive, my coke was flat and the barman was very drunk. Loved this place in the past. Maybe just a off day

It's cool . Being a ham radio operator having hight is better to make contacts. Using a hand held radio its nice to take use of the nice weather but I didn't get a drink at the pud , T Totaler'.

Unfortunately, not the place we were expecting it to be. The food was ok, but the place was a bit depressing to be honest. Went there after seeing the news article about the place, but I think the reviews and the award was given for the significance of the place rather than the place itself. We went on a Sunday for Sunday roast. We had the steak (rump) roast and cooked as requested. Good size meal for the value but the taste was normal. We also ordered the fried squid and it was soggy, with a weird taste and with plain mayo with a some salad on the bottom of it - not good. The service needs improving. The friendliness and welcoming attitude of staff was super basic. We were expecting something a lot better based on the news article from the warrington guardian. Mainly local people visit the place and we had the locals staring as we are an international family. A little uncomfortable. One couple just sat facing us staring at everything we were doing and on too just commenting on it. The place is not well lighted and not so cleaned, basic service picking up the plates etc but no spray and clean after each departure. The bar has a good variety if Ales, beers and spirits. The place feels more like a night pub bar than a place to come with family to enjoy the drinks. The place does promote the history and heritage of the area and place. The castle grounds are well kept but not much explanation about its history was available apart from googling oneself. Unfortunately the place needs caring and uplifting if they would like people from other areas to come and enjoy the place. Service needs improving, more welcoming and friendly towards outsiders. The façade gives a feeling of being a grandiose place but upon entering one can’t help to feel the low in atmosphere. Thanks but until the place improves much more, we will not be coming back. Feel free to try for yourselves.

I absolutely love this place, I have been coming here a long time, but more recently as my actual local meeting spot.. meeting friends, filming interviews and the beer festival recently. I just wish more people would come and see it... the food is excellent, the views are amazing and the staff are exceptional ( Charlie and James really are fantastic landlords) praise to all the staff at the castle and thanks for showing the previous landlords how it's done ✔️

An absolute gem hidden away in Runcorn! When im wanting to go out for a good meal this is the only place in Runcorn I go. Both menus are filled with delicious fresh dishes to choose from. I love the evening menu as im a huge tapas fan.The food is exceptional, worth the price which isn’t even that expensive!

I've lived in widnes for a few years and always wanted to see the castle ruins. It's a little oasis in Runcorn. Worth a visit ( and you can have a pint while you are there! )
