Came in for Sunday lunch and had a fabulous meal. Good portion size the beef was perfect pink in the middle and quite thick cut. The horse radish was great. Loved the carrots glazed in honey and the peas beans and cabbage were really tasty. The Yorkshire puds worked too! The family had a lovely meal and even the dog was well catered for! Overall a great experience. Perfect to come in for a meal or just a drink....

Sunday lunch… Decided to try Sunday lunch without a reservation. Tables were available as we arrived late afternoon. Not sure if busy previously. Parking was fine but you have to pay, only free for permit holders. Atmosphere was quiet and the staff very friendly. Menu was limited. There was beef, pork belly, chicken thighs and a vegetarian option. Belly pork was unavailable. Never seen chicken thighs as a main on a Sunday dinner before. Personally I dislike so was disappointed. The food arrived in good time. The potatoes seemed over cooked or hot plated so didn’t taste good. The vegetables were nice but over garnished with dried thyme which was annoying as kept having to pick it out of my mouth. The desert menu was predictable to other restaurants, however there were 2 options for cheesecake, one being rhubarb cheesecake which seemed strange. Overall I thought the meal was good but nothing special. Prices are high considering the quality of food

My partner and I stayed for 3 nights here in a lovely homely, clean and comfortable room above the pub. We had a wonderful stay, Lina, Emily, Jessica and Sam served us with drinks and delicious food cooked by Tom. They all were friendly, chatty and met all our needs, with competence and efficiency. Beth took time to talk with us on our last morning whilst our breakfast was cooking. The cafe side of the Cartologist is quirky with lots of interesting decor. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. A treasure of a find!! The pub closes at 10pm so a quiet nights sleep was guaranteed! We would definitely stay again, we had a lovely short break in Durham, and The Cartologist experience is highly recommended to anyone who wants a great place to stay!!

We stayed in this hotel for one night. The girl who showed us to our room was pleasant. The room was clean and the biscuits were a nice touch. The tv had no issues with working. Comfy bed and fleece style blankets on top. Something in the bathroom would have been lovely such as a shampoo or shower gel.

Had a family Sunday lunch here. Service was great, but let down by the food and the atmosphere of the restaurant. Only 1 couple dining at 13.00 on a Sunday should have rung alarm bells. Food was really disappointing with the roast beef being served far too red bloody for us, no green vegetables on the plate, and the gravy may as well have been tap water. Not worth the money, expensive for what we were served. Will we return, maybe for a drink but definitely not for food.

Booked 1 week at the Cartologist in July. Very nice location, very friendly staff and large room. Nice menu and attractive areas for lunch, etc. Parking was the only thing that was a bit exciting. If we go back to Durham this will be our 1st choice. Recommended!! Greetings from the Netherlands

We walkinto town (Durham) and had a lovely walk around the river. Then we headed up to the Cartologist for a cake and coffee. Everything was reasonably priced with veggie options (not many vegan or gluten-free options though). The staff are always friendly and cheerful. Clean and tidy with cute decor. This is one of my local pubs and I will always come back. One of the best in Durham for food 💖

I purchased two itison vouchers for a £50 spend and an afternoon tea respectively. We made a reservation for the first voucher for my husband and myself for a Saturday evening. On arrival, although not busy, the decor and feel of the place seemed nice. My husband ordered a pint, which was fine, and I ordered a Malbec. When tasted my wine it was clearly not Malbec but Merlot. I mentioned this to the waiter who insisted it was Malbec. Not wanting to make a fuss I just kept it. My husband ordered the pie with mash and I ordered the fish and triple cooked chips. Meals were delivered after a little wait. My triple cooked chips were just frozen chips, the fish was very greasy and mostly batter and the mushy peas were dry with a skin on. Everything was luke warm, presumably left under a heat lamp for some time. My husbands pie was ok but didn’t have a lot of filling and his mash had a skin on. Both meals were as tasteless as they were unappetising. When the waiter cleared the plates I suggested that my largely uneaten chips were not what you would expect from the description of ‘triple cooked’ and were in fact frozen. He said he would go and speak to the chef then came back and said that the chef said they were triple cooked chips. We paid the bill and made to leave. As we were walking through the bar area we were shocked to see one of the bar staff lying on the floor cuddling a customers dog! We decided to cancel the afternoon tea voucher as soon as we got home. Nice pub and surroundings but food and service sadly lacking.

First time here and what an amazing place. We were really looked after well by the staff (Jess & Emily) I had a chicken Parmo and my friend had a spicy Wrap. food was quick and really delicious! We came here because they were dog friendly and our golden retriever had his own menu! He had sausages! The whole place is clean and newly refurbished. How did I not know this place existed! Will definitely be back! Car park is small but all the street parking is free after 6pm

We had the afternoon tea which was paid for us an anniversary present and we really enjoyed it. We had read some reviews and were a bit dubious, but we found the afternoon tea and staff to be far from disappointing. The lad who served us was really good ,warm, and welcoming. The only downside was the parking , we parked in the first of the 3 parking spaces, but someone decided to park a 4th one that almost blocked us in .Luckily, my wife was there to see me out. There is some paid parking on the road outside the Cartologist, which they could have used.

Where to start! Itison voucher birthday treat for my daughter was afternoon tea. We took my mum along too as an extra special treat. I has booked beforehand for two of but asked if I could call later to confirm my mum would join us. Which I did, and was assured she had been added to the booking the evening before. I was contacted on the morning of our booking asking if I could confirm the third person as they had not heard back from me. I explained and clearly my previous conversation had not been relayed. Arriving at the Cartologist, the room at the rear was pleasant and practically empty. Nothing was set up for us and we were told to " sit where you want". Tea and a latte was brought. Large tea pot each - great. One tea bag - not so great. Tea was weak and was never going to be anything else. Latte was tepid and we requested another but hot this time. Sugar in sachets, not enough. Then came the afternoon tea. The sandwiches, cakes and scones were presented in a tall, wooden shelved frame. This already restricted conversation with mum. Without a shadow of doubt, the majority of the sandwiches had been made a considerable time before and the bread was curled up, dry and crispy. There were beef sandwiches with some kind of dressing on that was probably mayo but the beef was scraggy, the dressing sloppy and the bread was so bad I actually asked if it had been toasted. I was told that perhaps the chef had! These were inedible. They were replaced with an apology. The fresh sandwiches had fresh bread but the beef was tough, sinewy and dry. The chicken sandwiches had a sweet chilli dressing. The bread again, inedible. Fresh sandwiches were there, egg and cheese. I'm sure they were made fresh because staff clarified with me a request I had made about 2 of us not wanting cheese. There were 2 plain scones and a cheese scone. These were ok, however, butter in packets again and not enough. The dry, hard bread theme continued with the cake selection. These were so dry by now they were hard. Each one was dry, crispy to the touch and again, inedible. Even the cake containing a cream filling - the filling had developed a skin. After trying to make light of this and rescue the situation, and having only been able to each some chicken filling and my mum and daughter the scones, then started the building work. Constant drilling 10 metres away in the outside area. I was appalled. The video I have is a small sample of what we sat through for 15 minutes until staff finally had the foresight to ask the builder to stop. My daughter spoke to staff at the bar area. This staff member had the audacity to argue back and claim each sandwich was freshly made and she had watched The chef make them. She was arrogant and rude, mostly unapologetic and defensive. I spoke to a staff member who had waited on our table. She came over to say she had asked the builder to stop. I explained how disappointed I was that such a rare and special occasion had been ruined. I detailed all of the issues, showed her the curled up, dry bread, the poor fillings and the dryness of the cakes. The brownies (I think that's what they were?) were so brittle you could robustly tap them on the table. I explained this experience was so beyond poor, the food was atrocious, the presentation lacking, but the excuses given that the chef had toasted the tops of the sandwiches was incredulous. This member of staff was very pleasant, apologetic and empathised. Our experience here was terrible, really from start to finish. Some of the food offered I would not give to my dogs. 15 minutes of constant drilling does not make for a pleasant ambience. Staff arguing back when presented with inedible food is a huge red flag for any hospitality establishment. Do not waste a moment further considering The Cartologist as being worth a visit. A special day for us wasted leaving us angry and upset

This review is no reflection on the staff who we found most attentive. The food wasn’t good, had we not been out with friends and didn’t want to spoil the day out we would have complained., however we shouldn’t have needed to if we were served with the food we were expecting from the menu. The description on the menu doesn’t reflect on what you are served. Farm house bread with carved ham was run of the mill white sliced bread with sliced ham from a packet Crisps were unseasoned nachos and the cheapest quality, side salad was floppy and brown. Husband payed extra for maple glazed bacon and extra mature cheese, to go on top of his burger the bacon was questionable and the cheese was a slice of processed cheese. Most definitely wouldn’t recommend for food.

Steer clear is my best advice, particularly given the choices of eateries in Durham. I was suspicious when it was selling vouchers on Itison and there is a good reason as the place is woeful. My advice to the owners, is forget the gimmicks, and sort out the quality and choice of food, prices and ambience. The place was empty by 9pm and there were few in before that on a Saturday. Limited menu, the gammon was tasteless, chips dreadful (how can you get chips so wrong) and you know you are in trouble when it’s fried eggs that is the star of the show. Feels like a place on its last legs.

Poor - Booked for Sunday dinner; arrived to a fairly empty pub (used to come here before it changed hands and was always busy and always good food). Told no hand pulled beer, Guiness awful, clearly not pulled correctly. Given menus and when it came to order was told no chicken dinners left (it wasn't late and it wasn't busy?). We ordered pork and beef (pork lots of fat; beef really chewy) - asked for sauces but they didn't arrive, didn't bother asking again as just wanted to eat and leave by this point. They've obviously spent a bit on marketing and branding so on surface looks like should be ok but seats were falling apart and ceiling needed repair just all a bit naff. Won't be going back.

4 of us ate last week. None of us enjoyed our meal. Poor quality main courses, pasta with a meagre sauce, dry fried chicken, poor quality hamburger, more pastry than filling in beef pie. Dry and heavy sticky toffee pudding, rather tasteless chocolate tart, icecream was quite nice. We really wanted it to be good as the catchment area is great so plenty of potential custumers. I'll go back to try the fish and chips and hoping that will be really nice. We all liked the chips that came with the hamburger. We wait for the standard of food to be raised. Manager had a high opinion of himself and a bad attitude toward us, probably because we were seen as undesirable customers. Food was actually alright, onion rings were greasy and tasteless and the staff walked around asking everyone if they'd ordered the food as if they hadn't been told where to go with it. Got asked to leave as if we'd offended someone, now I just think that is because we weren't the kind of people the manager wanted in their. Such a shame!

Great meal for my birthday. James the manager was a fantastic host. A couple of reviews below aren’t warranted as they said inappropriate comments about a female member of staff and were appropriately asked to leave. Great place to go.

Four visited with a small well behaved dog. After much hype about the place we thought we would give it another try, we used to visit regularly and then when it opened after covid the food on offer was very basic, nothing like the meals they used to offer. As we entered the pub the blackboard stated it was a Gastro pub so we had high expectations. Very small menu on offer and not a good selection. I ordered the beef and guinness pie and as someone previously stated the pie was shop bought, I was expecting melt in the mouth beef and lovey homemade pastry but nothing of the sort. Fish and chips were ok but not restaurant standard, burger and chips without the advertised sides and chicken schnitzel, the food was really basic and you were really hard pressed to pick something that you really wanted to eat from a very small menu choice. They really need to up their game because there are some lovely pubs in Durham that offer good quality wholesome food, good portions and at a good price. The staff were friendly enough but once again we will be giving this place a miss.

Went for the first time yesterday evening with my wife and son, our meal was mediocre and expensive for the quality, you could definitely tell a good portion of the food was frozen. The drinks were standard but very pricy. The service was nothing special, didn’t even get a goodbye upon leaving. Overall pretty forgettable, there are simply better places to spend your time and money in Durham.

My two friends and i decided to give this try today at lunchtime, having prebooked our table. This will be the 1st and last visit as we were all disappointed with the standard of the food. I ordered the Steak and Guinness Pie, and it was obviously a shop bought frozen pie with no hint of the Guinness. My friend ordered a Chicken Shnitzel, which was swimming in garlic butter, and my other friend was served two rather average beef burgers without the coleslaw garnish (as offered on the menu). The food was dreadful, to be honest! The saving factor was that the staff were really friendly. However, none of us will ever return there.

After major refurbishment we decided to go and check the place out. Fantastic furnishings all around. My hubby and I said we would have a drink so we ordered 2 halves of beer. As far as we could see there was only 3 tables in use So we sat down just off bar area. We had not had a drink when young girl came over and asked us to move !! I asked why The reason was table was booked from 6pm I checked my watch it was only 4.15 pm I explained we were only having one drink so why ask us to move and pointed out the time Young girl walked away not happy. We finished our drinks and I took glasses back to bar. I asked could I give them feedback ? I explained the conversation we had had with young girl to be told she was only doing her job I pointed out the time and it was 1 hour 45 mins to the reservation They then said they would give the manager the feedback Lets wait and see if it happens again to us

Had a booking for 5 covers at 3.15pm, by 4.30pm starters still hadn’t been cleared and mains hadn’t arrived. We ended up clearing our own starter plates to the bar and asked for our mains. We also had to move tables because bar staff were pretty much launching the glass bottles into the bottle bin. Asked for a replacement drink because glass was cracked. Ended up leaving before mains arrived. Manager should go on a training course, asked his team members to apologise to us rather than handling it himself. Appalling service.

Got this for 7.70 and it might be the worst fish and chips I’ve had, barely any fish at all with burnt batter on the outside

This is very close to Gala cinema area. Very popular to students in Durham. We ordered half chicken and chicken wings salad. Turn out is quite okay. My impression is their chicken is dry, but not this time. You can place order and pay via QR code. During busy hour had wait for more than 30 mins. Better skip the peak hour.

Grease is the word. It’s like they made a burger then decided to dunk it in a vat of oil. Slopfest. DNF. You have to choose your sauce and salad with the burger, which is a trend I am not on board with. The fries were like the old king fries at BK, but unsalted. Desserts are nice.
