The California in Sutton

Decent sized Sunday lunch served with either beef rib, chicken or gammon. The beef rib on the bone was succulent and juicy. The kids Sunday lunch was good value. Dog friendly too.

Visited with my partner and went for a Sunday Roast, 1 hour wait when the place is next to empty to be told they don't have some sides, which we cancelled. The dinner was mediocre, some hard root veg, watery gravy and the plate had been filled with 7 potatoes (bit excessive), although the rib of beef just wasn't to my taste, it was tender but it was more pulled beef than what I'd expect. I ordered sticky toffee pudding, big mistake, tiny portion and it was over microwaved and went hard, scorching inside and stuck to the plate so I ate the ice cream only. First and last time I go here, wish I'd spent my £50 elsewhere tbf.

I booked for 10 adults and 3 children Sunday 1.0pm. On entering there was nobody in sight to greet us and show us our seats. We found them ourselves. We were told immediately it would be 45 minute wait for food at 1.0pm and the restaurant was nearly empty. The place was clearly understaffed!! The food was not good- warm food not hot, hard vegetables and few/tiny roast potatoes. Sadly we will not be going again.

A busy pub. Limited parking that you register your car number for on an iPad on the bar. They run an order by App system : you scan a QR code on your table for drinks and food. There was quite a long wait, when we asked we were told there was an hour wait for food. The food was good but the impersonal service left much to be desired.

Me and friends came in yesterday at midday. Lois served us our food. She was exceptional, she was so kind and willing to make sure we had a good experience. The chicken and bacon avocado wrap was delicious. Would definitely come back.

Staff seemed like they really didn't want to be there,the food was average but small portions and the atmosphere was like a hospital waiting room

I came here to eat with my family today and had a lovely time there. Anne and another member of staff went above and beyond to get our order taken, food out quickly and took the time to check in with us on our experience. Their customer service was spot on despite the place being busy. The food was delicious there! I had the beef and red wine lasagna and absolutely loved it. Overall excellent service for food, the two young ladies (Anne and the other lady whose name I wished I’d asked for) making the experience a lovely one for us all. Highly recommended!

Two of us had lunch there.The service was awful!The drink that I ordered was not right tasted very bad.Took it back .Izabel Eastern European manager was very rude ,basically made out its not her problem not her fault that she made it so disgusting ,that it was my fault.She didn't apologise no customer satisfaction.After arguing with her she reluctantly changed the drink for another drink!And it took her ages to rectify the problem.I have read on line that alot of customers have complained about this manager.I have never experienced such a unfriendly rude manager to a customer before.We have been drinking at this pub for years.

A good pub with lots of outside space.and dog friendly. Oh! And if you park in the car park remember to put your registration number in at the bar.👍

Excellent food and services. Prices very reasonable given todays cost of living. Decor looking a bit tired could do with freshing up.

I have to say I was very impressed with the service and food on 12th May, when the big event took place - charity walk for Royal Marsden. Probably hundreds of people visited the pub on that day, and I was one of them. Food was lovely, service was great ! And nobody had to wait to be served. Thank you for great experience.

This the 2nd week I have come for a bottle of prosecco both times the drink has not been cold enough. Luckily I didn't order the champagne which is in the same fridge. No seems to care .

The worst pub in England, zero entertainment factor. I suppose you can stare at each other, or pass a box of matches to one another, my god you need to see it ,to believe it. Not even a pool table, I mean Seriously, a pub without a pool table, why even open .

Slowish service but acceptable ish. Staff are friendly and helpful. Starters menu is is nice but the mains I wouldn't order again. Can't blame staff for rubbish meat the stakes were awful. For an extra 20 quid could of gone to the grumpy mole for proper grub. Nice place though. 3 Big seating garden areas plus large inside. Tvs all over for sport and drinks are nice. I'll come back for drinks and starters but not mains

Unfortunately they are taking my families favourite pudding from the menu at the end of April ( caramel apple crumble and custard) so needed to visit.

Amazing experience at the California. I’m a local to Sutton but had never been in. Went for dinner last week with a friend and the food was amazing!! Fresh and full of flavour. Atmosphere was great and service was impeccable, would definitely recommend as a great dinner catch up spot! Will visit soon again! X

I can honestly say this was diabolical standards The food I thought it was made from wood Waited a hour for food then waited 40 mins for small deserts Staff completely not fussed at all No hello when walked in absolutely 0 communication just said take a seat No goodbye eathier I have been here once before not sure if management has changed but the standards have massively slipped down hill Definitely think you need to train your chief how to took microwave meals and your front house team how to manage customers experience as only your business it will impact

I went up to the till to order food for me and my 3 year old son as the app wasn't working. Got told to sit down someone will be with me. Went up again 20mins later, told the same thing. After 10more minutes decided to leave. It wasn't busy in there so don't know the reason. Weird vibes in there. Just moved to the area and decided I wouldn't be coming back.

The atmosphere was great and that was it. Service very slow, food wasn't piping hot, it was more warm and quality of food wasn't the best.

(Review by Alison, not David) A lovely venue for a celebration. My sister and I met with Izabella to discuss holding our Dad's 90th birthday celebratory lunch at the venue and she was so helpful. Our party of 18 adults and 7 children were given sole use of the conservatory area which was really lovely. On arrival Izabella and her team had set a table up for my Dad and his wife which had an additional small radiator placed between them to ensure they stayed warm, which they did - such a thoughtful touch. We decorated the area with bunting etc. Izabella asked if we'd like particular music played so I emailed her a Spotify playlist of 30's swing music which was wonderful and was played all afternoon. Our Dad thoroughly enjoyed himself, as did his wife and all the family. We can't thank you enough Izabella and your wonderful team for making the occasion special.

Clean premises, had booked a table for 2 people for 7pm and arrived at 6.55pm A couple were at the bar being served, nobody else waiting or serving, there was a waitress who was busy, obviously serving drinks to the restaurant. We went to the restaurant part to see if there was another member of staff that could show us to our table. We were seated at 7.10pm. we ordered drinks and food from the bar and the time was now 7.15pm. Starters came out within 10mins and were tasty, mains were served quickly after and we both enjoyed what we had ordered, both were big portions so we were glad we didn’t order the 3 courses.

Staff were all fantastic (as always) The manager there is such a lovely woman! We went for the breakfast with Santa and my little girl loved every second! Will def be booking again next year!!

Had a reservation for 30 people booked, food was standard buffet food. Was not worth the money per head. Drinks were quite expensive, and the coffee machine was switched off at 10 pm. The pub is quite large but it has no real atmosphere,

A party of 6 plus 1 dog. 4 of us had the curry which we all enjoyed. Waffles, crumble and sticky toffee all good puds.

Three of us had dinner here last night. We were looking forward to having turkey with all the trimmings followed by apple and blackberry crumble from the Festive menu. We ordered drinks and found our reserved table near the Christmas tree so all good so far. We go to The California for drinks about once a month and it has a good atmosphere. The staff were friendly when we arrived and I thought we'd have a great time. Our work colleagues were having dinner at the surrounding tables, which was a nice surprise. My friend went to order our food at the bar and was told "You have to prebook for the Festive menu". Really?! I didn't see that on the website when I booked the table and no one told me this when I called to ask how to book a table. If we were in the High Street I would've suggested we go elsewhere. We were told we could have the festive turkey pie so just ordered that. When the pies arrived they looked nice. The food was fine and the mashed potato was hot. We had a nice dinner so the chef saved the day. Although the bar staff are friendly, it was a bit disorganised there on this occasion. It was a busy Friday night. Perhaps they need more staff. I'm still in two minds as to whether to go back there next year. I will preorder for the Festive menu if we do.

Chill environment and good food, with reasonable price! Worth to spend time there after work or during weekends.

Went for a roast.i ate chicken the only edible parts of the dinner were the chicken and yorkshire pudding. Roast potatoes were the frozen type which is fine but they were cold and the vegetables were just as cold and in my opinion inedible a member of staff did come over to ask how everything was and I did say the potatoes were cold and veg the same and to his credit he did ask if there was anything they could do.I just thanked him for his concern but didn't feel there was anything he could as I didn't want a replacement dinner I was already put off by the one I had. I ate the chicken and left.

If you didn’t believe the California pub could be a fantastic venue for a wedding think again! The pub, staff, owner and managers are absolutely first class! The venue was incredible and it made for the best wedding one could ask for! The lighting, cosy warmth of the venue and the accessibility and space was incredible. The owner Isabella is such an incredible gracious soul and seriously couldn’t have made it happen without her!!! She was so accommodating and resourceful and really provided everything we needed for the big day! The venue was well equipped, staff were great and they allowed us to bring in our own items to decorate the place in the way and style we wanted too! Without any force or resistance. From the bottom of my heart I can’t thank Isabella and everyone at the California enough! All the guests had a place to park their cars. The location was great and peaceful and the venue is perfect for a small intimate wedding. Would do it all over again and twice on a Sunday if we could thank you ❤️❤️❤️❤️

Friendly pub. Roast dinners were OK, but nothing to write home about.

Have visited this pub semi-frequently over the last few years. I’d say it’s a great pub for some drinks after work, or organising a wine catch up. I’ve had some bad experiences with food; taking an hour to arrive, being charged twice on the app, cold upon arrival etc. so wouldn’t recommend that part of the pub.

Went with two friends on a Friday afternoon not very busy but staff were friendly and the place is quite comfortable and clean. Food basically the same as any chain pub but we enjoyed ourselves and would be happy to go back

Do not recommend coming here for food. The service was awful, the manger was so rude, we was waiting 1 hour and a half for our roast dinner only for it to come and it was all wrong. Lots of tables around us were complaining to and all saying how rude the lady manger was.

New Management has made a huge difference. Lovely atmosphere, excellent roast dinner, friendly staff. A very pleasant afternoon. Will be visiting again soon.

I arrived with five walking friends and we had an enjoyable, relaxing Monday afternoon here - very good food and friendly and efficient service. Shame there was no real ale available though.

Had my sons 30th birthday get together last night booked a table for 14 people we all was eating but when ordering we got told they ran out of some of the food we wanted and the food we ordered was a long time coming roast turkey dinner had one small piece of broccoli they may of well not put any veg on for the money it cost it was a very poor dinner other food we had was not that nice either but the pub was friendly there were two young members of staff that was brilliant both were very nice. I would go for a drink there but would never eat there again food was disappointing

Went for lunch on a weekday. Quite quiet, with sky sport in the background. Food was good.

Ordered a small pasta for my 3 year old and some chicken wings. After 35 mins I asked how it was getting on. Was told 5 mins. After 45 I went up and cancelled the wings as was a pre dinner snack and checked on the pasta as my child was understandably getting over hungry. Was told 2 minutes. After an hour I was told the chef was doing his best but was just out of hospital and by himself. Eventually we left, I didn't ask for a refund for the pasta. As we were walking out the pasta arrived, the tiniest portion I've ever seen and so didn't bother. Staff were friendly but dreadful service overall. wouldn't recommend if you want food.

Well, I can't say anything about the food, we got there at 8:00pm, the place wasn't super packed but wasn't empty, live music was about to start, went to order and 2 employees were fighting with a customer (don't know why), when I was finally acknowledged I was told I couldn't order any food as the kitchen was currently closed and they didn't know when it would be open again, like what? Why didn't the lady that found us a seat tell us this? She purposely moved us to different seats so we could have dinner far from the DJ as things were about to get super loud. Anyway we left without ordering any food or drinks...don't think I'll come back, bad service.

The chicken wings arrived burnt, the pizza mangled and the breaded prawns too crispy... Gotta do better guys!

Now where do I begin, while I was eating my lovely Ultimate Burger (I can confirm it was ultimate) some blud started yapping to me and was getting lairy when out of no where Robert Berens intervened and said to him (This isn’t you buddy) and the guy stopped and left. What an experience it was and thank you Robert for saving his damsel (Me tehehe).

Nice venue There is no food in the afternoon, though. Food started after 5 pm They ran out of normal milk for coffee. Staff were very nice

We walked in and waited at the bar for around 10 minutes before anyone attended to us, and when they did they they seemed to have trouble finding our booking and had to go and find their manager. Eventually, we were shown to a table, which was filthy, and the chairs were covered in crumbs and old food, as was the floor. My elderly father nearly tripped over plastic bottles which were on the floor under the table. The waitress advised that a lot of items would be unavailable, as they had a big party in, and then disappeared for another 10 minutes, before returning with a menu and then spending more time crossing out all of the items which were not available. After studying the menu, we decided that there was not enough variety and after seeing the disgusting table and chairs, and having to put up with the noise of a room full of drunken people siinging (poorly) from a room at the other side of the pub, we decided to go elsewhere. We have been to other Ember Inn pubs and had good experiences, but in The California, both the pub and the service was truly disgusting.

Our local pub, we don't eat here but visit regularly for a glass of wine or three. Lots of room in the garden for when the sun's shining. Prices are reasonable, especially with the online offers. Staff are very pleasant and welcoming.

The California is a great local pub. Izabella & the team are always welcoming. The pub is good value, but if you have the Ember Inns app it’s even better. The menu is varied - pub classics but with modern twists. There are set menus from approx £13. In good weather the beer garden is a hidden gem - large with lots tables & some huts too.

Booked Saturday for meal Tuesday. Arrived 7.30 and was told we have till 7.45 to order meal as chef finishing at 8! Parents hadn’t even arrived had to very quickly order dinner and pudding. 3 meals arrived had to ask for the 4th after 10mins wait

Such a lovey place to dine in and a perfect place to chill out and get a few drinks with friends. They’ve got a good selection of whisky so if you enjoy a whisky this place is excellent.

Do not go here or Sunday lunch. Taking the absolute mick with portion size look at the lack of veg let alone meat and everything else!
