We had a fantastic evening at The Caledonian. Brilliant service from the ladies. We were visiting for the weekend and can’t wait to visit again so we can enjoy the Caledonians fantastic food again. Haggis fritters to start were delicious, then the Haggis Chicken was just amazing. Someone else had the pork and black pudding for main and was not disappointed!

Lunch for two on Sunday Sep 1st. Very disappointed with the food. The nachos were burnt and tasteless. We couldn’t eat them at all- they were so dry. The chicken in batter was doughy tasting. The haggis fritters were soggy with an oily peppercorn sauce on top as you can see in the picture. We told the waitress that we weren’t able to eat the nachos as they were burnt and she replied okay. Nothing was done to rectify this. We were charged full price. Very disappointed with the food. The service also wasn’t great. After clearing almost three plates away with the majority of the food still on it (unable to eat) it was clear we were disappointed. To look at burnt nachos and still serve them at £6.95 - clearly the standards are poor.

Booked a high tea for the family after scattering the ashes of a family member we recently lost. We were all feeling a bit raw and emotional so we really appreciated the warm welcome from the friendly staff. The food was excellent - great vegan and veggie options very tasty and really good value for money. The staff were fantastic, they couldn’t have been more helpful and we had a good laugh on the end. Thanks for everything we shall be back!

The outside of the Caledonian could probably do with a lick of paint, but don’t let that put you off. Once inside, it’s clean, comfy and the service is as welcoming and helpful as it gets. The food is exactly as one would expect a pub grub menu to look, but it’s cooked well, is tasty and is good value. Where the Caledonian really excels, though, is the vegan menu. It’s no more fancy than the standard menu, but is well thought out and executed. Moreover, I challenge you to find anywhere else within at least 50 miles that offers meat eaters and vegans alike at least three starter/main/pud choices each. A far cry from “onion rings” meaning somewhere has “vegan choices”, this is somewhere that genuinely treats diverse dietary needs as normal.

We went here for dinner a couple of weeks ago.The place is “the place in Brechin” .., it is lovely inside, exposed walls, wooden furniture, comfy looking sofa with games, clean loo and lovely touches with tissues etc....The menu though is boring. Mac cheese, chips etc. I went for a vegetarian dish, noddles with roast vegetables. This was a disaster. The vegetables nice (the aubergines slightly undercooked) but the whole lot doused in sweet chilly sauce. There was no culinary skill involved and i had stomach aches for days.I would expect someone to use garlic, ginger, soya and fish sauce maybe peanut butter? Chilly at the side if and how much customers want. The Chips were nice. The service was very friendly and attentive, the beer was good but the chef I am afraid maybe should try and develop some better recipes. Please read up on how to cook a vegetarian dish?

A place I used to visit frequently, however I believe a change of chef a few years ago.Seafood tagliatelle, mussels, prawns, haddock & salmon in a tomato sauce. Mussels were 2 green lipped mussels served in a separate bowl which were delivered after I had started my meal. Prawns were there! Salmon and haddock has become mush in the tomato sauce. Was nice and hot but totally lacked any seasoning, I ate the 2 mussels, a few prawns and some pasta then gave up and shared the over done chips from everyone else’s meals. My husband persevered with his chicken tortilla but didn’t finish it. Not impressed I’m afraid.A lot has been done to spruce up this place in recent times but it’s a great pity the food hasn’t upped its game too. Service was great by the way, couldn’t fault waiting and bar staff.

My wife and I live locally and wandered into the Caledonian for a drink. They said they could squeeze us in for a meal and so we stayed to eat. The staff said it would take a while as the Chicken and Haggis was cooked from fresh (about 20 mins).I honestly don’t remember having a better burger (clearly homemade) and my wife said the Chicken and Haggis was excellent. As a bonus the real ale was also very good. The service was very friendly, even noticing our table candle had gone out and immediately replacing it. First time in here and we were given a friendly welcome in the bar. It's cosily decorated and the menu has all the things you want to see on a nice pub table (steak & ale pie, fish and chips, home made burgers etc) as well as a bunch of other choices. The traditional food we had was good - well cooked, seasoned and tasty. We also tried a couple of the specials which weren't quite so good - maybe out of the usual comfort zone? But they were cooked right and I'd still visit again.

We were looking for somewhere to eat in Brechin on Easter Sunday evening and found this place on Trip Advisor. We were made welcome as soon as we walked in and were told they were only serving high tea at £15.50 a head. I had a pint of one of their guest beers and it was kept and served well. High tea was 2-3 rounds of toast with preserves and butter (?), followed by a choice of mains and then scones, cakes and either tea or coffee. I had pork loin with black pudding in an apple and cider sauce, served with plain boiled potatoes, carrots and cauliflower - the vegetables and sauce were very good, but the pork was a bit chewy and the black pudding seemed to have a lot of oatmeal in it. My husband had a spicy chicken burger with chips and salad, which he said were good. The cakes/scones were a little tired, but the cake I had tasted OK. We couldn't drink the coffee it was too bitter.

Really disappointed by our meal tonight! We use to come here once a week or more. Haven't been for a while due to busy family life and finally had a night we could go. From the onset we could see the level of staff had fallen, whether it be new or inexperienced. I had to ask for the specials menu & for our waiter to repeat the order. We asked for the starters & kids meals to come out together which they did, the waiter then asked us if the chef should bring our main courses? The food on this occasion also let us down. Menu hasn't changed for a long time. Kids get a half portion, they loved the lasagne but I'm not sure I would of been so happy? Looked poor quality and not exactly a half portion. My venison was over cooked from the "medium" I asked for, almost begging the "was it frozen" question. Vegetables were also of poor visual quality. I'll put it down to inexperience or poor training for the staff but I certainly won't be rushing back.

Ron recommended this Restuarant, and we must say it was the best meal we had on our trip home from Australia, all the meals we had in Scotland were good,But the ( Cally ) beat them all.I had the salmon and it was to die for,and also the veg. We visited this restaurant while travelling through on the way to Aberdeen , arrived without a booking ,we were warmly welcomed and immediately impressed with the cosy atmosphere. The food arrived piping hot , big portions and really fresh and tasty. I had the oatmeal coated Salmon which was great. My wife's chicken was just as good. On the outside we were a little unsure but this is a real hidden gem and we will certainly return again

Every month we visit Brechin to see our eldest son. On these occasions we go across to the Caledonian for an evening meal.A great "cosy" little pub with a good atmosphere and very attentive "smiley" staff that will go out of their way to cater for your wishes.Without doubt one of the best eating places in Angus. Looking forward to the next visit.Philip Joy senior

We were a family group of seven celebrating a special birthday and expecting some delicious food after reading the positive reviews. We were mostly disappointed. We chose venison, pork, lasagne, scampi and a vegetarian dish which were just okay, not particularly appetising, though the salmon dish was tasty. There was a mediocre overcooked selection of vegetables. Maybe the usual chef had the night off. Waitress stoney faced, even when she dropped dirty cutlery in my lap. Really wish it could have been a memorable night for the right reasons.

This was our first trip to Brechin and what a find the Caledonian was. The staff were very attentive and realised we were out of towner's but made us very welcome. The menu was varied although must confess that we both plumped for the Steak and Ale pie that was out of this world. The bar/restaurant began to fill up later with locals and they also made us feel welcome so thank you the Caledonian and we will return

Went to the Cally on Saturday night for an Anniversary meal with the Hubby. It's been a while since our last visit. I had the Duck from the Specials board , He had the Pork roast from the regular menu. We had shared a cheese board for starters, and i was hoping there would be room for a sticky toffee pud at the end, but there was no way of cramming it in!!!!! We savoured every bite of what we did have.Despite the fact that the place was chock full, and we hadn't booked, we were served very promptly, and the staff were lovely, and there was a nice relaxed atmosphere. Hopefully won;t be too long before i'm back for more.......

Fab filled rolls and homemade cakes. Sausages, bacon, etc. all sourced from local butcher, which is a huge plus in my book.

Absolutely lovely cafe, we stayed at the linked hotel which was also very nice and clean with very friendly and helpful staff who kindly organised our early breakfast before we set off for an early morning Rally, the service in the cafe was exceptional, nothing was too much bother for the lady who went out her way and opened up early for us which was greatly appreciated. The breakfast rolls and coffee were just what we needed, she was very welcoming and we couldn’t have asked for better service. Highly recommend popping in and you can also see their beautiful black cat Rogue who’s super friendly and loves a pet.

We arrived mid-afternoon and decided to go to the restaurant first as it would soon close. The restaurant was clean and the staff friendly and welcoming. There was a good selection of hot and cold food - we chose to have quiche and salad followed by a clotted cream scone. The food was delicious and the atmosphere pleasant and unhurried, despite being almost closing time.
