The Brass Monkey in Newry and Mourne

I went in with a couple of friends who had a baby, we just wanted some refreshment, it was about 9pm, they allowed the bana in for a wee while, it's hard to find an establishment such as a pub to allow this at this time but as it's a restaurant and a hotel, they have kindly allowed this on more than one occasion, thank you, it's not easy for a single Mum without any childcare options to have a life & go out with friends even for 15 minutes so we appreciate that, thank you

Usually really good ,was in for dinner last sat night with a friend,three courses each ,took the cutlery away with starter ,set the main course down ,without new cutlery, had to go looking about knifes and forks ourselves ,no real designated server for our table and ignored a few times ,took the plates away from main course ,never offered desert menu ,had to go looking about it ourselves, bar staff couldn't give out menus just relayed it at bar what they had

Absolutely shocking from the moment we arrived. We had booked a table for 8pm for 6 people. We arrived at 8.06pm and the first thing that was said was “if you were 2 minutes longer we were giving your table away”. Great welcome! Also wouldn’t have mattered considering there were 7 empty tables which remained empty. This review will make sense as to why it was so empty on a Saturday night. Next, we ordered drinks. My friends ordered 3 Espresso Martinis. 2 were fine, however one was so watered down and looked like dish water. Someone ordered a gin but was given whiskey instead. I ordered a Captain Morgan’s and Club Orange. Once I added the mixer and stirred the drink with the straw, I noticed a lot of black “floaties”. I looked closer and realised that there were 12-15 live flies swimming in the glass. Wish I had taken a photo.. absolutely vile!! I sent this back and the waiter looked as confused as we did. A few moments later we noticed the bar staff shining their phone torch into the bottle of Captain Morgan’s and then throwing the bottle into the bin. We ordered 4 steak fillets and 2 sirloins. The food came out and every single steak was cold to the touch. 2 of the fillets were supposed to be “rare” and they were medium. The other 2 friends with the Sirloin were so hungry so just ate theirs, however the rest of us weren’t happy to pay £30 for a cold steak and not cooked to as requested. We highlighted this to the waiter and he offered to take them back and have them recooked. It was now 9.15pm and they dimmed the lights and turned the music up (speaker was directly above us and DJ booth behind) so we could no longer hear each other. The 4 fillets then came back out and the 2 “rare” were now medium-well done. The medium rare was also medium-well. Again we called down staff and this time the waitress was very understanding and apologetic. The girl advised that she would bring the chef over to apologise and try and rectify for the 3rd time/ offered a refund. We said that we didn’t want to wait another hour and would be grateful for the refund. A few minutes later the girl came back and was looking towards the kitchen and waving her hand at the chef to come over, however to our surprise he didn’t. The waitress was very embarrassed and also walked away. We asked for the bill and noticed that the whiskey which we didn’t order was on the bill. Also there was a pavlova, fruit dessert and a brownie added to the bill which nobody ordered. When questioned at the bar, the girl said this happens when the staff don’t log off another tables tab when adding items.. well obviously, so who knows how many people are being over charged. This was my birthday dinner and first time at this restaurant. The whole experience was a mess and we had to laugh as it was the most bizarre meal we had ever had. We were originally planning on going to Canal Court however I thought a “Steak House” would be nice. How wrong was I when they can’t cook steak. If this review gets reads by management, I would be grateful if someone could contact me directly.

Great food, good drinks, good time 😁

Visited this gem for the first time last year and was totally wowed by the food - the buffalo chicken wings, onion rings, and chips were cooked to perfection. Since then, I've been back three more times, and the food has consistently hit the mark, maintaining the same high standard. The seafood chowder is a tad salty for some, but personally, I really like the bold flavour. Definitely a spot worth checking out multiple times!"

The size of the dishes aren't large, so get prepared if you are hungry 😜

Ordered garlic chips and got plain chips, cutlery was dirty, had high hopes but very disappointed

We went for the steaknight deal. The restaurant was freezing and they had to bring in a heater which was effective but noisy. Could have eaten in the bar but it was too busy. Our scallops and steaks were lovely and well cooked. We enjoyed it all however a drink was included with the meal. A glass of wine or a pint so we both got wine. The deal was £55 per couple but we had to pay extra as only ONE drink per couple was included!!

Long established Bar and restaurant in Newry. The Staff are very friendly, helpful and attentive. Always good food at keen prices.

Should be careful who you allow to run your “official tik tok” account.. especially with the opinions they have

Stop here for a quick bite to eat before heading back South. Friend recommended spacy chicken wings in here. Food was pretty good and tasty and arrived pretty quickly. Overall all nice pub experience.

A fantastic Bar with Excellent Food

Ok . Should have went with my gut feeling , decor dated , cobwebs have cobwebs , dark , ordered pasta linguine,, o my goodness , used a jar of tomato something probably dolmio . Stinking stinking stinking , no taste and prawns like rubber , asked for cup tea lipstick all over the cup , asked for desert , waitress told me what they had , then after 10mins arrived back to tell me they didn’t have any left considering this was only after 1pm on a Tuesday , honestly folks do yourself a favour and don’t even bother it really needs a good update , clean and a good chef .

Have eaten here for three days in the past week and all we can say is Wonderful. Staff are wonderful so helpful, food is wonderful and extremely reasonable in price. We had fajitas on first visit, with sizzling chicken on second visit, and carvery for my sister today, with me opting for the salmon dish. All we can say is Wonderful for every meal. Thank you all.

Unfriendly manager. They couldn't accommodate us, which is fair enough. He didn't need to be quite as rude. The other staff member was really nice, he's earned the stars on the review.

We stopped here for dinner and a drink just on the good exterior appearance. It was a Tuesday evening and it was very quiet. The menu has a great selection and is reasonably priced. The other half got a chicken supreme, which we were told would take 25 mins as it was cooked on the bone. A good sized meal came out on a bed of beautiful creamed mash. I must say, this was the only plate cleared by herself on our short 3 day break I had a ribs and spicy wings board with champ which were also beautiful and very good sized portion. 2 X main courses a pint of lager and 7 up were £40 with two full and very satisfied customers. The place needs a bit of tidying and brightening up inside a do something about the damp musky odour on way to toilets

First time here, staff were lovely and food was fabulous. Highly recommend

I've visited a few times so I knew it would be a great place to take my son who was over visiting from England. As usual we recieved a warm and friendly welcome. I had a 10oz Ribeye steak cooked to Perfection. I like mine rare but with the outer fat rendered. My son had Surf and turf, 8oz Sirlion topped with a generous portion of Scampii. The ladies had lighter meals of Seafood Chowder, Pasta and Ceasar salad. We had arranged for a Birthday cake to be bought out so skipped desserts but washed the cake down with Irish coffees. Importantly . . They serve an excellent pint of Guinness. We went early evening and understand that later there is live music and a spacious cocktail lounge which attracts the younger crowd.

First class food made from fresh home made burgers to die for, one off best burger iv had in a long time, yes it takes longer from ordering to getting your food but worth it. Staff very friendly the place is a bit dated but bright and welcoming. Definitely be back

Great food at a reasonable price

I would not refurbish place. Food is bland, no flavour whatsoever. My husband has steak and I had fajita and we might aswell ate porridge. Place seems abit scruffy too

One of the best places to get food in Newry. So cozy to sit next to the fire with fresh hot food and a few drinks.And the crispy onions are to DIE for! 10/10

Stopped in for a quick lunch, the electric went out a couple of times but the staff where great getting it back on.

Overpriced menu and cold atmosphere. The service was fine. However, the menu was difficult to read, and that with the dim lighting was very deceiving. Not a happy 😕 customer 😒

It is many years since I last visited The Brass Monkey and by the look of it it is that many years since it saw a lick of paint. The place looks very run down and in great of some serious remedial work and I'm afraid candles stuck in whiskey bottle is far from romantic. The food was reasonable for the price paid and most of the staff were attentive, however one or two of them could do with a little more training. All in all I would just about grant a low "Average" three star mark but unless there is a major tidy it would be difficult to even aware a "Poor" two.

Wow how can I write a review....all I can say is amazing From the outside it looks like it could do with a lick of paint but apon entering its homely and inviting We ordered the ribs and chicken wings and the portion was big and very tasty ..afterwards one of the lads came over and asked did I want to see their gin collection...I followed and oh my god I am so glad i did ...3 stories of amazement Definitely recommend this place Will definitely be back Photos don't do this place justice

When I came to this place I was a little concerned as it looks a bit run down from the outside but looks are definitely deceiving...wow it is homely ,comfortable and absolutely gorgeous inside I don't think I have ever been inside a place so fabulous Staff so nice Food amazing Place out of this world Thank you so much to the manager for the tour Definitely recommend it and definitely will visit again photos don't do it justice

Rely nice place to go for a wee bit of dinner. Carvey on a Sunday not bad for £11. 12.00pm till 2.00pm. Staff rely helpfull.

We visited here for a couple's night out in Oct 22. There is a good menu with choices across meat, fish and vegetarian. We took a look thru the menu and I was undecided on what to go for but there was also a weekend special on so i opted for this which was a nice juicy burger loaded with pulled pork and Tabacco onions served with hand cut chips. My wife opted for the chicken carbonara on the advice from the manager who mentioned they were due to expand the pasta options due to a chef who has great experience. The food came and was nicely presented. My burger i think my wife quoted me "was the best burger I've had anywhere" the chips amazing and i even managed to nibble a bit of my wife's pasta which was great and not heavy for a carbonara. Once you've been the brass there's also separate attached section with an indoor cherry blossom tree and a beautifully displayed alcohol section.

After a long illness my husband, family and I chose The Brass Monkey for our long awaited dinner out. Excellent choice of venue. Everything was excellent from start to finish. Beautiful décor throughout, with a warm welcoming fire and pleasant staff. Nothing was to much trouble for the staff they were very accommodating to our requests even though it was quite busy. Food was good and so was the abundance of cocktails!! We left shortly after our meal but we will return in the near future to sample the reminder of the cocktails!

NEVER visit. Disgusting food which tastes stale and the staff don't seem to care about anything. Very bad place. You're better off going to mcdonalds

Have ate in the brass monkey often and it was delicious. However went last night and ordered the cod. I took two bites of it and sent it back as it was off .the second person with us also returned hers the third said hers was fine and ate it all only to be up all night very ill. When I rang today to tell them I was up from early morning sick they apologised but said the fish was fine. To me that means it's still on the menu so we won't be back again. So disappointed

Was quite busy but that didn't waver the quality of service. We heard about this place and wasn't disappointed. Will be back most definitely

over an hour wait after ordering, when the waitress was asked would it be much longer we were asked if we wanted preferential treatment, really rude girl ,food was small portions and not warm ,all the childrens food was already salted even though we had a baby,wouldn't recommend

Staff could care a bit more and crack a smile from time to time. There were a lot of dishes on the menu that they ran out of and we couldn't order them. However the ones that we got were prepared very quick. Burger patty was very tasty but was the half of the size of the bun. Peppercorn sauce out of the packet. Battered on the fish soggy, oily and not crispy at all. Fish itself fresh and tasty.

A surprising find in an unassuming restaurant building. The bar is just beautiful. The food was top notch. The steak was perfectly cooked (and we are from Texas…we know good steak), the mushrooms were deliciously roasted and the lightly crispy onions were yummy. Lauren was...

This place is fantastic! It has become a family favourite and the food is consistently first class, staff are all brilliant and a special mention to Brian and ross who just can't do enough and treat the kids fantastic. A real family friendly place who cares about they're customers. if you get a chance be sure to call in you won't be disappointed!!

Read the reviews and decided to try The Brass monkey. Got there as the were opening and the staff were friendly and took us in although they were opening up. We got cappuccino whilst we waited for the kitchen to open. Ordered calamari, rib and wing combo and loaded burger. The calamari was not that good but the salad it was served on and the rib and wing combo was really tasty. The burger was good but the onion rings on the burger was a little too oily. Can see that the venue was a little dated and think in the night it will have more charm as it does have good decor but at mid day it shows it’s age. All in all not a bad experience.

My Daughter an myself went into this place Sun 3rd oct for Sunday lunch.we got the pasta from the menu I have to say it was delicious an so was my daughter meal. Staff very friendly an working hard. Definitely will be coming back to this place. Would recommend the brass money for food.
