Was at the Boatyard Saturday evening last. Lovely food, great service. Unfortunately irritatingly spoilt by the entertainment. A combination of the entertainers speakers and the acoustics. We couldn’t speak without having to shout. That is not the ambience we was looking for. Yes I would go back when they return to using g the grand piano with a gentle tinkling on the ivories.

I went to the Boatyard on Wednesday 31st July 2024 with my fiancee for drinks and a meal, We arrived about 3pm and were not greeted at reception as the two women were too busy talking to each other to even acknowledge us, We walked through to the deck and sat ourselves down at a high table, A young lad walked past and I asked him if we would be served drinks or did we need to go to the bar to which he replied, after a very long pause. Im not sure? We then went to the bar and got our own drinks. After some time we asked for a table as we wanted to eat and we were sat in the middle next to the mud as the tide was out. There were a number of staff working all of whom were female apart from the one young lad who had a ponytail. Every time we looked for someone to serve us the young lad seemed to be everywhere but the females were congregated by the bar inside talking constantly and ignoring the customers. Consequently the service was appalling as we had to ask to be served and waited far too long on every occasion. This culminated in a 20 minute wait for the bill where payment was taken and there was no interaction to ask if we had enjoyed our meal. I then Emailed the following day to give the Boatyard the opportunity to deal with my concerns but to date I have still not even had a response, We were not the only customers who received this appalling service as we heard others complaining, There is CCTV in the premises to prove that everything I have stated is factually correct so I can only say do NOT go here as money appears to be far more important than happy customers!

Attended for my husbands birthday with the family (party of 6). I had stated the birthday on the online booking form, and even emailed directly on the day of the booking to ask if they could do anything to make it special - unfortunately nothing was achieved. The two ladies on the front of house reception were not overly friendly, and when I mentioned at the end of the meal that it was a shame the birthday was forgotten about, I was told it was my fault for not mentioning it to my waitress….even though it stated the birthday celebration on their printed booking sheet. The waiting team (Katy in particular) and the quality of the food thankfully made up for the miserable first staff impressions. The meal was amazing, and every single member of our table (aged between 4 and 65) were blown away with the taste and presentation. The waiting staff were all helpful, friendly and could not do enough to make the meal enjoyable. Katy went above and beyond to ensure we were all happy and catered for, and even made the kids day by pointing out the stranded jellyfish under the decking. A great meal at this wonderful restaurant, just unfortunately let down by unapproachable reception staff clearly in the wrong profession.

I don't normally leave reviews. But I had a table booked for over a month at the Boatyard. Had a phone call on the day that we were due to dine to say that they have booked an event and could we move our table outside which we did. On arrival the DJ playing garage very loudky with over a hundred people in attendance when we arrived meant we decided to cancel in the end. The staff did not care when I spoke to them and were more releaved that we would not be in the way. I Would not book again as the customer service is very poor. They should of have called us when they booked the private event rather than on the day. I can't rate anything else as we didn't get to try the atmosphere or food.

I visit Italy a lot and the spritz costs €3.50 and is made to the same recipe everywhere and served in a large glass and with this you also get a snack. On returning I thought it would be nice to try and enjoy the same at the boatyard. Unfortunately they didn't follow any recipe and I ended up with a glass of red coloured sparkling water that cost over £10. It's a beautiful restaurant with amazing views but let down by the lack of bar training and price.

Lovely decking area restaurant layout and bar. One steak meal was overcooked and one lamb rack meal was slightly overdone. More importantly one starter had pepper in it despite us making it very clear my friend was allergic and she had a very worrying reaction as it closes her airwaves. Damage was done tbh but they added insult to injury by deducting £9 from a £450 bill.

Late review from 03/2024. Family birthday meal for 24ish people. setting, views, layout all stunning. Service was amazing. We were fortunate enough to have a lovely clear warm day and were seated upstairs with beautiful views over the estuary and the fishing lanes. Idyllic. Good variety of food for everyone including a family member on a liquid diet, so soup it was. plus children. They were very accommodating for all our requirements. Nothing was too much trouble. We were seated for 5 hrs eating, drinking and celebrating before heading down stairs to the bar for our final tipple. It was by far the the best visit I have had there. So as a local, I'm happy to return. We were so busy enjoying the moment, we only got a few images of the starters lol, Bon Appetite

Was really looking forward to an evening here. Turned up and there was a singing on ( which I did know in advance) but it was so loud couldn't hear myself think. Asked to move table, which they did but the table was wobbly and by the loos. Asked to move again, which they did. But tge table so big and with the noise from the singer hard to have a conversation. Menu was fairly limited, with fish and chips and burgers on the menu( which you can get anywhere) ordered the squid and prawn for starter with a mango salsa. It turned up without any prawns, when I asked I was told the prawns where disguised as the squid? To be honest couldn't quite understand as it was so noisy. Had skate for mains which was excellent. Had a cesear salad which was a bag fricassee and sauce squirted over the top. Cesear salad should be cos lettuce with anchovy and croutons. Dessert was tiramisu which was lovely. Very expensive for what we had.

A disappointing experience, food-wise. We booked a table for lunchtime on Sunday but were not informed that a reduced menu is served on Sunday lunchtimes. And there are very few options for non-meat-eaters on that menu (fortunately, there was one on the daily specials). I ordered swordfish carpaccio for a starter and it was paper-thin, dry and leathery and served with so little dressing that I couldn't really tell what it was. With nothing green on the plate, it was very bland. The skate wing main was grilled to the point of being chewy on top, unpleasantly over-salted and unimaginatively served with capers, chips and a mixed salad. The underside of the skate was better (as the grill hadn't dried it out and over-concentrated the saltiness.) The roast dinners were good but all served with nowhere near enough gravy; we had to ask for more gravy so many times that the meals were cold by the time it arrived. We were also seated directly under an air con unit that was set to "gale mode". We had to ask for it to be turned off twice and, by the time it was, we had put extra layers of clothing on and our meals had gone from cold to freezing. Although the food was poor, the drinks were nice, the atmosphere was buzzing and the live jazz trio were great.

Been a few years since we have been here. Booked for Sunday lunch. Had a drink on the terrace first then went in to be shown to our table. We both opted for the chefs special mixed meat Sunday lunch. Food arrived quite quickly and was absolutely fine. The french trimmed lamb cutlets were lovely and cooked just right. As was the beef and the additional pork slice. The only thing I would add, is to maybe serve the gravy separately as I would like to pour it over my Yorkshire pudding, but only a very minor personal thing. Service was good. Nothing to fault.

Disappointing Saturday evening for 10 of us celebrating a hen party. Insufficient bar staff so ordering our drinks was arduous. The meals were v poor - 4 of us had salad as a main which was little more than a bowl of salad leaves with NO dressing and topped with chicken little better than cardboard. The poor musician was battling against very noisy large groups including some shrieking children. Our server Mary was working incredibly hard and did everything she could for us. Then there was a problem with the deposit paid and the helpful cashier agreed it on trust. The whole thing reminded me of a well known family holiday camp.

Sunday menu was so limited and the mains where just boring. We waited over an 1hr for our mains and the special was garlic prawns, when it came it was the most disappointing dish we have had. It was boiled prawns in some bed of dry salad that was covered it what looked like kids menu tomato pasta sauce. This this was by the way £25 each, I felt robbed!!! When asked how long the mains will come the lady said because we sat down late there is a black log or orders, bare in mind we were already waited over an hr on the table. The only semi decent was the Sunday roast. There is no salad on the men, there was cod (fish and chips) but sold out by 3pm. Rest of the waiters and waitress was nice and the view is lovely when sitting outside, but I'll never go there for food again.

"DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY" Where do I start, Sorry but deserves a rant! Booked a special family meal for 7 of us. On arrival the receptionist could not find our booking name which was booked and confirmed via email. So waited at the bar till our table was ready. The table was ridiculously big for only 7 people, more suited for a large party of 12. Two of our party ordered piri piri salmon and two dover sole ( which was more expensive than fillet steak I may add at £45 each was way over priced) To say the food was a complete disappointment was an understatement, underwhelmingly bad!!! TASTLESS and over cooked! We had ordered Skewered Mango king prawn which was like frozen breaded prawns with a drizzle of chilli sauce, not a skewer in sight and a prawn cocktail was a glass of lettuce with about 5 tiny sauceless prawns on it! was so bad! The truffle and parmesan crusted chips were nothing like the explanatory menu but were a bag of frozen warm chips! yuk! We had an accident with a broken glass on the table as there are No table clothes anywhere! just bare metal tables which is not very inviting, nor giving you a fine dining vibe which a slight knocked glass resulted in it being shattered on the metal table. The waitress did not know what to do to rid of the glass but could not believe our eyes when she brought out an old manky large floor dustpan and brush and swept the worst of it into the pan. Leaving all the shards on the table the whole time we were there. Unbelievable!!!! Our main course took over 40 mins after we had repeatedly asked how long it would be. After already having to get up twice to ask where our drinks were and butter for the bread. Being asked at the end of the meal when half of most but 2 dinners were left, how was your meal was a little late, no asking is everything ok during or do you need anything else was non existent. When the manager came, we explained our disappointment rather than making an official complaint. But have to say how it was handled and having to justify our complaint is completely not acceptable nor is it good customer care. Sorry The Boatyard, but your handling in customer complaint procedures needs addressing as well as staff training as chiefs. The whole experience was poor!! Over priced! And Overrated! Learn to take onboard and be accountable for customers comments. Not take in one hand and give it back in another being defensive. Not a good way to run a business. Where is even the customer service? Will never go back! Harvester food springs to mind!!! Definitely not a fine dining establishment!

I've been asked by the waitress if my son will have ice cream , so got him 1 scoop of strawberry, we got like 2 scoop and a flake that we been charged for and I didn't asked for one . Anyway ,the bill was 87 ,and I have no idea what for really, even the bill was confusing , very disappointed. I also got a terrible heartburn since I left the restaurant. Probably need a good kitchen staff/chef with experience and passion such a shame as is a beautiful restaurant and location .

A table of 12 came for a birthday meal, everyone was served apart from the most simple of orders… soup! I waited while everyone else was eating into their hot food while I waited for mine to arrive, several wait staff had just been standing around talking whilst I waited for my soup and when it finally arrived o was surprised at the size of it, no apology for how long it took to come out after more complex dishes had been served, nothing accompanied it either apart from soggy croutons, I’m sorely disappointed in the service I’ve received and would suggest staff members check on how the food is and the quickness of service rather than talking, this is my first time eating here but I’ll think twice before dining again

Stopped by after a walk along Chalkwell Beach and they had a great offer of two courses for £19.50 so we decided to stop for a bite to eat. The chicken liver pate starter was lovely with crunchy Melba toast. My burger and chips were great however the chunky chips on my partner's fish and chips were under cooked and still a little hard. The fish was nice and we shared a tiramisu for dessert which was the best of all the dishes. It was very quiet but it was a Friday afternoon however, the team were very welcoming and happy to move us from the bar to a table when we decided to eat and were great with us sharing a starter and the dessert, offering additional plates and cutlery.

Pretty sad when olives are the best part of your dinner. I’ve had the soup of the day which was pretty tasteless as well as the “Gigante” tortiglioni which was 5 normal sized tortiglioni with a very heavy and again tasteless sauce. The salad on top was plain with nothing on it. My girlfriend ordered the vegetarian version of the “big burger” and it just had 3 big mushrooms, pickle and tomato which was the same price as an actual premium beef burger. Any pub would made it better and the prices are London like. Wouldn’t recommend this place and definitely don’t come back.

Yesterday 13 family members celebrated a birthday lunch and we must compliment the chef on the excellent food. Big thanks to our waitress Mary who looked after us and it was a pleasant surprise to be entertained by live music . A good time was had by all.

Paid £150 each for New Years Eve Rat Pack night. Arrived at 7.15, served an OK dinner. Waitress service very good. Before dessert was served Rat Pack started, unbelievably loud - way over the top for the size of venue, our ears were hurting! No conversation possible. Sought out the manager, she said would ask them to turn volume down. After 10mins or so she said had asked them twice but they wouldn’t! So left around 8:45, bill reduction apparently given but seems not, we will get in touch. Was some discussion over the bill but music was so loud couldn’t hear each other. Saw some folk had moved to the covered outside area for relief. All conversations on tables had stopped as impossible. Did they do a sound test? I wish I could have measured decibels but easily loud enough to be illegal in a work situation, our ears were ringing in the cab home. Utterly ridiculous. Ruined our New Years Eve, went home and watched the tv. Thanks Boatyard, definitely won’t be back!

Gal dinner and dance to Ratpack entertainment OMG what an amazing night. This place is very up-market and the staff perfect examples of how to wait on tables, smiling friendly and attentative. Food was set menu for the Gala occasion and included fillet steaks, Lamb and Dover sole. We chose steaks and they were cooked to perfection. The cheese board was huge and of great selection The Ratpack were Brilliant - playing the part and great voices. It was a fantabulous evening - can't recommend enough

Great view and water front spot but about it. Food was on the lesser side of quality especially given the price points. Basic steak and chips for 40£ per person not including drinks / sides is a bit steep for the quality of food/ service.

Had booked for the Stevie Wonder night but was told on the day the the act had laryngitis. Pretty specific diagnosis but glad the act knew as they could get the correct treatment for that exact condition. Told the replacement act was “Barry White” and some Motown. Lucky they could find a replacement at such short notice. Was seated in the upstairs area, the menu was different from that on the website but was told by the waiter they changed the menu as they were running the stock down for Christmas. Several times we were brought food that wasn’t for our table which became a little annoying in the end but maybe they were new staff learning. We were told we could have the Tomahawk Steak that wasn’t on the menu though but would have to wait half and hour longer. The seating upstairs is some distance from the stage area so you do feel a bit out of the way. When we ordered drinks the waiting time was quite longer than you would expect so maybe not enough staff? The food was nice and the staff polite. The act was good also. The lady that checked us in on arrival that also doubled as the person operating the spot light for the act was also very nice. After walking past the Boatyard many times over the years and always wanted to visit as we thought it was something special we were a little disappointed.

Had heard good things about this restaurant over the years and was looking forward to visiting. We were seated on a large table a little too close to the dance floor. restaurant downstairs didn't feel overly busy and so lacked some atmosphere. There was a large surprise party taking place upstairs which kind of overtook the space but understand it is a good venue for this type of event. Service was friendly and efficient. Food was okay, nice flavours, portion sizes were overly large - some may like this but was a little too much for myself. Had a nice evening, with nice entertainment, if visiting again I'd check if there were any private events taking place.

Worst Night Ever , Review Reply. I was in the party booked to dine that night December Xmas night. I feel I must comment on the fictitious reply the Boatyard have concockted. How can the Boatyard defend their staff member who caused all the upset and deflect the incident that night by replying with a story full of lies . If we were as bad as you say , surly we would have been asked to leave , not please sit , here is your waitress and you would have been offered a free drink if you had not walked out???? Just one example of your lies , The young girl at desk was lovely, asked us , bar or table first (Bar) and to just tell them when we were ready to go to our table. No Issue what so ever !! Shame on you , Boatyard management to try and turn it around to make it look as if you were the victims and not us. The reply was completed by someone not witness to any of what happened as it states in the reply , our manager and your waiter (Waitress?? )on the night !! I can assure you , you were not told the truth. And No , nothing happened to any of us that day or night , we were all in good Christmas Spirit , looking forward to a good evening . The only bad thing that happened to us on that day happened in your restaurant and by a member of your staff. Ellie

Very poor my first time here and was not very impressed. Few things missing off menu including fillet steak and it was only 7pm.!! Very loud in there and could hardly hear any of our family while talking. Thought this was a top restaurant to sit and have a nice meal. I know it’s festive time so probably we picked the wrong restaurant. Food was very average and bland. Expensive for what we had. Sadly won’t be going again.

Had one a drink at the bar 1st , then told front of house we are ready to be seated at our table , 21.00 booking. Christmas entertainment night. When we got to our table it was a rectangle table in the corner. There was a round table also available next to us. I called out to the woman to ask if we could be seated on the round table , I had to call out again and raised my hand to get her attention because in the Boatyard it can be very noisy and all sound tend to echo in there. She saw me and came back, that's when she started , being very rude and quite aggressive and accusing me of clicking my fingers to call her back ???? Who clicks their fingers at people anymore ????? I told her , I did not and would not click my fingers to get some ones attention , I raised my arm to get her attention as most people do in restaurants , to get the bill , another drink , or what ever !! as she was walking around the end of the bar and going away from us. Members of my party also tried to tell her there was no finger clicking!!! I was waving to get her attention. She was having none of it and would not listen to anything any of us said , we were being told off, very rudely and aggressively ???? , so I had to asked to see the manager who tried to smooth it out by saying it will be reported and looked into internally etc,etc ?? The manager then asked if we would like to sit down and introduced us to who our waitress was going to be. We sat down and all just looked at each in amazement as to what had just happened and how we were just treated and spoken too. It could be some other type of incident happened to this front of house woman earlier in the evening or she was not in the right frame of mind to be working that night and she was ready to let loose at somebody? just happened to be us !!!! We all agreed quickly not to stay and give them our money and went into the Peterboat for drinks and settled on snack food. Such a shame , we have enjoyed the Boatyard many times , mostly in the summer and some event nights and have never experienced anything like this before. I hope they do look into my complaint and find out the real reason why and what actually triggered this woman to attack us like she did?? Sorry a bit long winded but I had to write what happened. TB

Never been before and first time last night. Lots missing off the menu and it was only 7pm !! including steak!!! Starter was ok, main was again ok but tasteless… very expensive for what we had I thought.. was extremely loud and really struggled to talk with our friends/family. Didn’t realise it was a music venue as well as restaurant. In the whole I will definitely not return. Sorry boatyard didn’t live up to what I was expecting!!

Pre booked party of 14 for a Diamond wedding anniversary at 7pm. Service was extremely slow. This was not the fault of the waitress. Orders were taken but didn't get served for ages. Main didn't get served until 9.30 and a child's menu, chicken goujons and fries and a burger didn't appear and after an apology appeared about 10 minutes later. The goujons were hard and dry. By this time everyone was past waiting for dessert and we were being picked up so didn't have time anyway. The staff were very apologetic and there was some refunds. I would suggest that the kitchen staff do not have the facilities to complete meals for large parties which is very sad as the food was good if a little expensive and although there was plenty of staff early in the evening by 10 o'clock there only appear one waitress on the lower floor who was trying her very best

Awful blonde glam older woman on reception tainted our lunch to quote as she stropped past us”someone’s got a real problem”. I felt sorry for the Barman trying to seat us after we’d ordered food she was clearly giving him a hard time. I hate seeing bar and waiting staff being treated badly. Not good value for money. £65 for two starters and a bottle of white wine. Won’t be returning ever bye!

Take away from the Boatyard Kiosk was not great. I'd had chips there a year or so earlier and they were amazing. Today the chips were nice enough, though hugely over salted and my son's chicken goujon were fine but the scampi I ordered was inedible. I would not recognise that as scampi. It wasn't cooked through, even the coating was still soggy under the crispy exterior, and the fish was raw inside. I had to spit it out. It didn't taste good at all and wasn't exactly cheap. A lot of salt on even the chips in the child meal. Being associated with such a good restaurant and at the price being charged, I expected better and came away incredibly disappointed (and hungry!). I'd recommend sticking to the bog standard fish and chips kiosk in the pub by the beach.

Took over an hour to arrive even though it’s 10 min down the road, microwaved Mac and cheese was stuck together chewy and cold, chips were stale, burger was decent but bun was soggy. Ordered a drink didn’t arrive. My order came to £40 and didn’t want to give a small freebie. Bad experience. Go to an authentic Jamaican.
