The Boat House Fish and Chips in Southend-on-Sea

Absolutely brilliant cod, chips and mushy peas, fish was nice and moist and batter was crispy, chips just right, topped off with two cans of Pepsi max, mind you the cod was large as I was peckish total cost a very reasonable £20.40p.....will definitely come here for fish & chips next time I'm in southend 😎

They do offer halal options. They will fry it separately if you ask! Great customer service, great food.

Had the No.2 breakfast, there are cheaper breakfasts out there but you get what you pay for and this was superb. They make a banging cuppa too! They provide an attentive service and are good people and I don’t hesitate to recommend, will be taking the family there for a meal or two, but it’ll be before the summer season gets going as they are gonna be a very busy place!

Me and my wife visited Southend today and chose to eat at The Boathouse Fish and Chips and we was not disappointed. The fish was outstanding and mouth watering. We will be back soon

Moldy bread Fish, chips taste like frozen food

Hello everyone, come to enjoy delicious food , positive, kind atmosphere

Was expecting proper fish n chips. Chips were just frozen chips,calamari was pitiful, looked straight from freezer to fryer. Mushy peas were basically cheap tinned peas boiled to death served in its own juice. Curry sauce was so bad I can't even put a description to it. The condiment containers were 🤢 everything needed a good wipe. Please do not go to allocated toilet facilities without being accompanied, like something from a horror movie. Luckily we were only passing through but if you like proper chippy chips and authentic sea food this is not the place.

Just got back to London after a good day out in Southend. Took my mum there for her 95th Birthday and she loved it, the fish is fresh and tasty and the portions are massive!! Felt really welcome there and will definitely go back as she didn’t get to try the rock as it has not been a great season, thank you for a great meal 😊Michael , Deborah, Blaze and me mum Vera

Walked up & down the pier with family & then we all crossed the road to The Boat House. This our first visit, picked because of the great Google reviews. What a find! Super freshly cooked fish & chips at a reasonable price. We opted for ‘small’ but it was plenty. Great cup of coffee. Very friendly service. Will be going back.

We ate here on a grey, cold Saturday. The food was fresh and tasty, portion sizes were good and prices reasonable. The owner was lovely, made us feel comfortable. Recommend ☺️

Service and staff were great but portion sizes for chips were small considering it's a sea front restaurant, I was surprised on the low quality frozen chips we were served. Food quality was generally low, my daughters chicken nuggets were terrible. Ketchup was the cheap fluorescent vinegary type... 🙁

I would avoid this place. I wanted cheese on my chips they charged me £10 extra. Two fish cakes £14. Very overpriced. Food was horrible and very small portion size.

Hi. I would highly recommend to avoid this place. Over priced and food is not nice. Frozen chips re-heated.. the cheese chips Are microwaved to melt the cheese. So chips didn't have any taste. Plus ➕️ 5£ extra is you want cheese on your chips. Then the fish cakes. 7£ no flavour. We were charged 48£ normally anywhere decent. 28 to 30£. Will never eat at this place again. Looked at reviews and travelled all the way to the seaside to have a lovely fish and chips and it was so disappointing! The medium fish and chips was absolutely tasteless and the portions were small. Wouldn't trust these reviews... Amazing customer service though- well done to the two female servers!

We were on a day trip too Southend. So, of course, fish and chips. Went into The Boat House, which is a small dinner. Both service and meal were outstanding. Highly recommend.

Nice looking place. Excellent service. Small fish for a medium size but tasted very good. The big issue for me is that they do not serve freshly cut traditional chips which is sacrilege for a business that uses the term Fish and Chips in their title. Frozen chips which is not nice at all.

Loved it!!! We been greated by lovely Izzy, she had such a friendly approach with warm smile. We were about to take a take away but ended eating in. The service was amazing, the fish so crispy and not like any fish and chips I had before, it was delicious!! Not full of oil. The place is clean and modern. I will definitely come here again, in fact this is the only fish n chips restaurant in Southend on sea I would visit again. Simply the best. 5 stars from us all. Very happy kids indeed 😊 thank you.

I had a fantastic experience at The Boat House Fish & Chips Shop today. The fish was incredibly delicious—fresh, moist, and cooked to perfection. The customer service was outstanding, the staff were friendly & attentive especially the beautiful smiley girl served us food. The shop was impeccably clean and well-maintained, which added to the overall positive experience. I highly recommend this place for anyone craving top-notch fish and chips!

I had the worse fish and chips I’ve ever eaten here today. The chips were frozen how much effort does it take to chop a few potatoes and fry? The batter on the fish was crispy but tasteless like the cod which wasn’t flaky. The staff were friendly but I will not return not sure why they got such good rating surely it can be for the fish & chips?

We were 9 of us had our dinner at this place on 21 July 2025 at 21;30! We were served by Altin and Kelly, very friendly service, best fish and chips in town, highly recommended! You will not be disappointed of the quality! Great! Simply the best!

The Boat House did not disappoint! Not only was the fish and chips fantastic, but the service was also great. Both management and the waitresses were warm and friendly. They were also very accommodating to my elderly parents. Highly recommend this place, and will definitely visit again when in Southend.

The Boat house fish & chips in Southend is the most fresh, most delicious fish and chips we have eaten in the whole of Southend and the waitress Izzy and Kellie and Alton the owner give a brilliant service. Would definitely recommend and we will come back again.

I called up to see if they were open and the woman on the phone was EXTREMELY rude. I wouldn’t even recommend this place to anyone. Next time put your opening and closing times. Customer service is 24/7 .. not when you feel like it.

Our second visit here and for a good reason , the food is lovely and the people are just a nice . We stopped by quickly today just for a coffee and ended up having quite possibly the best apple crumble and custard on the south coast . The place is very clean and well presented , the owner and staff always have time to have a good chat in a genuine way , price wise it’s superb value for good quality , we have nothing but praise for the Boat house , we will definitely return .

mixed experience. the calamari and scampi wasn't fresh tasting (prob some supermarket frozen stuff) and some chips were underdone (prob because of rushing through many orders). on the other hand, the cod was divine. batter was light and melt in the mouth.

Friendly staff who are extremely helpful. Good portions and drinks were large and reasonable prices. Right next to one of the main entrances of the adventure island park. Fun fact: When she was the Duchess of Cornwall she visited and ate there.

Came to Southend on Sea for a special day trip on a weekday. Had a lovely walk around then looked for a good local fish and chips before we left. Found this place on Google map and it was convenient and near the seafront/ Adventure Land. Wasn’t too busy. Found an indoor table by the window. Weather was beautiful. Staff gave us time to decide what to order and were really friendly. Not a big place but nice and cosy. Reasonably priced. The food was fresh and good portions. Not too greasy and well cooked. Fish was silky and batter wasn’t burnt or too oily. Would recommend. We looked around to see if they offer tartare sauce or mayonnaise and the staff noticed we wanted something and offered help. Swiftly provided us with the sauces.

Excellent whitebait and chips and massive portions.

This is a fantastic seaside restaurant with a great choice on the menu for both adults and children! The prices are extremely reasonable as well for the great quality of food and the portions that you get. The staff could not have been more welcoming to our family and went above and beyond to provide an exceptional service! If you are in Southend on Sea this is a must visit for a bite to eat! Loved it!

Busy Sunday and in all honesty went into the cafe as they had tables free. Really clean and tidy inside and the waitress was very polite and helpful. My wife and mum went for chips and a roll, daughter had a jacket potato and I had whitebait and chips. Anyway the portions were so big wife jokingly made a point of saying to me and our daughter we better eat our dinner later (we did). Chips really well cooked; crispy on the outside, not greasy and nice inside. Girls liked their rolls. Jacket potato was massive and had a good portion of beans and cheese. My white bait was lovely; coated and deep fried, big portion with chips and a garnish. If I went again I would just have the whitebait cause there was enough for a meal. With drinks came to £39 before tip which I thought was good for a big lunch for 4.

We visit this place for first time and our experience are very good. This place offer take away and table service. Staff is very nice and helpful. We order 2 drinks and haddock+chips and medium cod + chips. Both fishes was very well cooked and fresh. The only thing was little disapponting was there chips. There where frozen. Not the typical fresh cut chips you expecting from fish&chip shop. All to come to close£27. Not bad price for good food.

Visited yesterday with our two grandchildren after a great day out at the "seaside"! The staff made us very welcome and it was very clean. The choices on the menu were excellent and reasonably priced. Would definitely recommend and will be returning.

There aren’t enough stars available! Food was incredible (best rock and chips I have had for a very long time), staff were incredibly friendly and couldn’t have done more to help us and make us feel welcome. Restaurant was also u credibly clean and had a great choice of food and drinks for all tastes. Wonderful meal to round off what was a fantastic day out with family.
