The Blacksmiths Arms was recommended by a friend for Sunday lunch, we were not disappointed, with a huge carpark and a warm welcome we were shown the table we had previously booked. Drinks were brought and shortly our roast dinners arrived, plenty of everything and was delicious, followed by a gorgeous sticky toffee pudding, then relax in the bar area with more drinks and idle chitchat. The bill was very reasonable so would definitely recommend a visit, various interesting places nearby, Castle Howard, Sherriff Hutton Castle, Malton, Howardian Hills.

It doesn’t get much better than this. A jewel even in the Sam’s estate of perfect pubs. No phones, super landlord, friendly locals, quality pie, great prices and everything inside that a country pub should be. Beer garden looked lovey too. Villagers are blessed to have this in walking distance.

Went for Sunday lunch and had a very enjoyable experience.Very welcoming reception and the food was very good.. The chef spoke to us at length prior to the meal and the meal didn't disappoint. Superb beer too. We would have ordered a dessert but the place shut at 4pm on Sunday and chef had already left. Quirky place but we will be back for sure as we were made to feel very welcome and the food was excellent quality and value.

You cannot book so just ring or turn up .. and the service is top quality from entry to exit. Sam Smiths beer and a variety of wines to choose from. We had to choose from many "standard" pub grub meals and went for Steak and Kidney Pie for the girl and Gammon with egg for myself. All with mixed vegetables. At 12:30 on a mid week with no one else yet ordering it took half hour for the meals to be cooked and served to perfection. It seemed a shame that we had no further appetite (the portions are quite above average) so that was all for today. Good luck in these times. We will be back.

This is a proper local village pub! It's an old smithy with stone floors, a real fire and a great warm and welcoming friendly atmosphere. It is a Sam Smiths house and so all drinks from beers to spirits and mixers are theirs. It's run by Simon Lorimer and his wife Tracey who produces the most delicious home cooked pub food which can be served in the bar or a small but cosy adjacent dining room. Despite being very busy she always has a smile for everyone. There's always a good buzz with locals just having a chat or a game of pool in a separate area away from the bar. There is a good sized car park.

I’ve driven past this pub many times recently and liked the “chocolate box” appearance of a rural country pub so popped in for lunch with my wife. There wasn’t an extensive menu but certainly enough to choose from and we enjoyed the food and friendly service. We went back a short while afterwards with four friends on a cold, bleak night, to find the place humming. It’s credit to them that so many people venture out to it, along narrow, tortuous, twisty country roads in bleak weather. All our party enjoyed the food immensely. My wife and I went for steak and it was superb - some of the best we’ve had. It’s a Sam Smiths pub so the ale is cheap and very likeable and I was able to get a pint of one of my favourites - Sam’s Stout. It was excellent. Food prices were very modest for this quality of cooking. On the downside, the toilets were reached from outside, but clean and reasonably well appointed. The main, small, dining area is down a couple of stairs from the main bar - but these “disadvantages” are well worth it for the excellent food and beer at affordable prices. There was a good sized car park at the rear of the pub so no need to park on the narrow village road.

Many thanks to Simon and the locals for a warm welcome in this classic Yorkshire/English pub. I encountered many very good pubs on my recent 615 mile solo walk from Dover to Edinburgh but this one was easily the best. It's odd finding this listing under 'restaurants' on TA; this is a public house, and a very very good one. Good food has been understood here long before the term 'gastropub' was thought of; The Blacksmith's Arms doesn't need new labels with food served on bits of roofing slate, breadboards or any of that nonsense, it's just a great pub! 10/10 without hesitation :) #TrussyTrek2018

Recently stayed at Holly Brook Barn down the road for a couple of days with some friends that had managed to leave their little fun spoilers with their husbands for some long overdue girly catch up time. We had a walk on the Sat and stopped for a quick drink before returning in the evening for a meal. The beer in the afternoon was well received and very reasonably priced and the food on the evening was fresh cooked and delicious. As others have mentioned the menu is small however what is available is really good with fresh home cooked chips. Having tasted the pork and cider pie that a friend ordered I can recommend this and if you've room a sticky toffee pudding. We found the staff and the locals to be perfectly welcoming and to the American werewolf poster I think you find you get back what you put in! All in all this pub is what it is a lovely old fashioned village local, wine connoisseurs and lovers of haute cuisine need to perhaps go elsewhere but for most you'll enjoy a good meal a drink and possibly still have change out of £20.

You know that pub scene in American Werewolf in London? The one where the guys walk in and everyone in there goes quiet and stares at them? That's like this pub, that is. I've rarely experienced such an unwelcoming pub- where the locals are sat round having drinks- then simply stop and stare while me and t'Girlfriend ordered at the bar. From there, we were so unsettled that we sat outside on the picnic bench- where they shut the front door on us- making it clear just how welcome we would be if we wanted a second drink. And then someone stared out at us from a window. On top of this, this is a pub that claims to serve “cask ales”, but instead just serves Samuel Smiths “beer” instead. Just awful. And more than a little weird. It might be the best pub in the world if you live locally and know everyone. But we were scared. We drove away quickly.

Booked for Sunday lunch after reading TA reviews. Although we live less than 10 miles from Farlington, we had to use a map to locate it, as it is on a back road which I had not used before. Trust me - it is worth seeking out. The village itself is very attractive, and the pub is everybody's text-book example of a "local". A friendly greeting from the landlord always helps, and from then on the service was consistently very good, as was the food. We both opted for roast pork, which came with all the usual trimmings, including a good chunk of crackling, A nice touch was an additional gravy-boat brought with the meal, without having to be requested. The food was very good indeed with generous portions of everything. If I was to nit-pick a bit, the Yorkshire puds were a bit over-done for our taste, but I fully realise that this is a matter of personal preference. My wife had the sticky toffee dessert, which was easily big-enough for two to eat, and I should have taken up the landlord's offer of a spare spoon to help out! A very good experience, and we will go again.

The pub is tucked away off the main road through Farlington - but is worth finding! The car park is good and there is a rear beer garden and more tables to the front. The Bar is quite small and very popular; even at 7.00pm on a Saturday evening, it was crowded with a mix of very friendly "locals". The adjoining restaurant is very comfortable and the food was excellent; we chose the very generous Home-made Pies - Pork & Cider, and Chicken & Ham, both in crunchy pastry cases. Nicely cooked selection of vegetables with chips. In dining, it is advisable to make a reservation. Great atmosphere & good value for money. Have to comment that Credit Cards are not accepted, even though this is a Samuel Smiths pub.

Today a family of four of us had Sunday lunch at The Blacksmiths Arms, Farlington, York. The pub is set high up in the middle of this pretty little village and is well served by a large car park. We received a warm welcome from the landlord before my eleven year old son challenged me to a game of pool, before we had lunch (he has never played before!). Drinks were served along with the cue chalk for the battle ahead. We ordered three roast pork and one beef Sunday lunches. Offers of advice to the wannabee Ronnie O'Sullivan were refused and his defeat was not graciously accepted (well I did used to be a pool team captain!)The food was soon ready and we were shown to the dining room which is located in what was once a real blacksmith's workshop along with the forge and blacksmith's tools displayed on the wall. All the tables had candles lit in bottles complete with the wax drippings to further add to the charm of this wonderful hostelry. The food was served (and possibly cooked) by the landlord's wife who was very polite and helpful .It was delicious and well cooked. So much so, we decided to have desserts to complete our enjoyable lunch. No nasty surprises at the till. The prices here are very good value and we shall visit again. The pub was very busy, which we felt was an indication of its popularity and credit to the landlords. This is what is often described as a 'destination pub' ie. not on a busy main road. Well, get your satnavs set to YO61 1NW....you won't be disappointed !

We've been tempted to go here for some time now with it being fairly local but never got round to it. Really pleased we did though, as we enjoyed a very nice meal that was exceptional value for money.Don't be put off by the simplicity of the surroundings - the hospitality is great, locals friendly and the drinks well priced, under £2 a pint, although wine at less than £3.50 a glass is limited in choice. Make sure you eat in the restaurant which is really cosy. What steals the show though is the food - generous portions and freshly cooked, and really good value. Less than £4 for starters and around £7 to £7.50 for main courses. No wonder they don't do an early bird - they don't need to!Would certainly recommend a visit - we will definitely go again.

A huge thank you to Simon and Tracey for this terrific little pub.I called in just before Christmas and it was as busy as any town centre pub. The Beer was great, and the customers friendly and welcoming.I will definitely return, it just a pity that I don't live closer.Well done Simon for keeping such a good hostelry

Called in at last for Sunday lunch. Wish we'd gone years ago. Great value and great food. A Sam Smiths pub run by a man and wife team who give great, friendly service. No nonsense food, well presented, plenty of it without being ridiculous.Choice of three meats with all the trimmings and five veg including the roast potatoes. Choice of four puddings, all wholesome, tasty and filing. Would thoroughly recommend.Visited November 20145 of 5 stars Value4 of 5 stars Atmosphere5 of 5 stars Service5 of 5 stars Food

Being on our way to Crayke from the Yorkshire Lavender we saw a sign to the Blacksmiths at Farlington. We called in and looked at the menu and advised by the very friendly landlord that they served food from 6 - 8pm( they also serve at lunchtime). We returned later and sat in very idyllic bar. I asked for a menu at the bar where the locals were very friendly. After ordering our food from both the fixed menu and specials board we were asked if we wanted to sit in the restaurant (an old blacksmiths work shop) which was very well decorated with plenty of memorabilia of the blacksmiths. When the food arrived it was piping hot served on hot plates. I had steak & ale pie and my wife had leek, chicken and ham pie. Both were served with chips although new potatoes were available, 3 vegetables and an individual jug of gravy. The food was excellent and we would recommend the Blacksmiths to anybody but a word of warning, they don't take cards so take cash because you will regret it if you don't go.

We enjoyed a lovely meal here, the chips are wonderful - proper, real potato chips cooked to perfection. Oh, and the rest of the meal was lovely too. Menu with plenty of choice and a specials board with other meals. One of those places you could say bring me anything, and it would be great. Very reasonable prices and a friendly welcome. Highly recommended.

My husband and myself decided to take a cycle ride to farlington for the first time this year, we have previously been but only for drinks. The sun was shining so that was a bonus that we could sit out at the front. My husband went in to order drinks and ask for a menu, when he came out he said that they were so helpful and friendly. It wasn't a vast menu but something for everyone, I fancied the prawn cocktail which was on the starter menu for £3.95 and my husband chose the ceasar salad, he went to order and for an extra £2 they did the prawn cocktail as a main, our food arrived soon after served by a friendly gentleman both our salads looked lovely and fresh, I was pleased that the Marie sauce was served seperately as I'm on a diet. The salad was simple but fresh and enjoyable especially for the price. Our visit cost us £17.50 for both meals, two lime & soda & two halfs of lager. I would recommend this little place to anyone, lovely setting and good value for money, we will be visiting again. They do only serve lunches till 2 pm and are closed on a Thursday.

One thing you can be very sure of is an extremely warm welcome by Tracey and Simon at this wonderful little olde world pub. The ambience is great and the beer is good.My family and I booked in for a meal last week and the whole dining experience was second to none. Hoiw Tracey puts that kind of meal on the table from her tiny kitchen is a miracle.I would recommend this pub to anyone. Don't expect Haute Cuisene, or Michelin Stars, because you get better than that. Good wholesome edible food! A treasure of a pub.

I have mentioned before in my reviews that I always anticipate what my food may be like by the pub. In this case I expected a quick scampi in a basket..... How wrong could I be, firstly I entered a smallish bar area with about 10 locals ALL of whom acknowledged me, on the bar was a cheese board and biscuits which a lady was insistant I participated in eating. The bar is old and a bit tired but suits its environs and I think it would spoil it if it were all fresh and clean. So on to the food, a small but perfectly formed menu with some english classics all it seems freshly made, I decided to order a rare sirloin with just a healthy mixed salad. Order taken check and double check I did not want chips. Whilst waiting enjoyed one of the best pints of Sam Smiths Cask Bitter I think I have ever tasted. The food came and was very well presented as well as the green salad with the most stunning dressing, there was also a home made coleslaw that was excellent. The steak itself was generous, perfectly cooked and melted on the mouth. All in all this place is a gem,and was so good I nearly did not review as I wanted to keep it to myself. Discovered they do Sunday Lunch so will be visiting with my family in the very near future.
