The Black Boy, Weeley in Tendring

We held my mother's wake at the black boy and the staff were very welcoming. We were able to hire a function room for three hours that was long enough, and the food provided was lovely. The gardens were beautiful too. There was no queueing at the bar for drinks and bar staff were very friendly towards everybody. We didn't feel rushed at all. Thank you to the manager and the staff for making our day a very pleasant one under the circumstances.

A special old pub in Weeley, on the way to Frinton on Sea. Here to get my Subaru serviced at D Salmon Motors opposite. A great pub/restaurant to have a superb lunch while you wait for your vehicle.

Haven't been here in years so was nice to return. Food for our funeral buffet was nice. My only issue was we couldn't access the pub by wheel chair. I was told we could go in the back but its gravel so impossible to push a wheelchair.

Excellent customer service and very helpful staff

We recently booked for a large party of 12 for a Sunday dinner to celebrate a birthday. It's very hard to find a restaurant that can cope with a large group of people, but we can not fault these guys! We had to pre-order the day before, which is understandable for a large group. All meals came out in a very timely manner and were lovely. We will definitely be returning in the future.

Brilliant pub ..been many times if they can fit you in for a meal they try very much to accommodate..we rang up on the off chance Saturday night the landlady merged us in well amongst others eating there..the tables are spotless no stickyness there. cleaned Brilliant.the dining room is spotless. .the staff always friendly and make you feel like they've known you years a good sighn of a proper pub.the old school of pub welcome 🙏..the food as usual was piping hot 🔥..wife and friend had Steak and Ale pie .mash and veg with a nice boat of hot gravy..our friends wife had Pan Fried Liver mash and veg it filled her plate very nicely..I wanted Gammon but just missed the last slice gone earlier so had the Burger 🍔 and skin on chips had it b4 with bacon and 🍅 tomatoe onion 🌰 and dressing..I said could she put and extra grilled Burger on to make half pounder she said because no Gammon the extra Burger would be free ..now that is amazing 👏 and a proper atmosphere helper ..but she is excellent at making you feel at home anyway..Great meals everyone said finished off with fruit crumble and ice cream .others bread and butter pudding and vanilla custard and lemon roulade with cream..brilliant night and food and company very good..Will go back again...all of us..A+!

For a pint or a good meal at reasonable prices this place is worth a visit good quality and service with a smile

No parking, staff absolutely rude and the food to match... what we was served for what you charged was shockingly over priced. We will not return to this place

First time of visiting The Black Bouy and definitely won’t be the last… staff excellent, spent time chatting with us, advised on menu, took our order, food arrived and was delicious 😋highly recommended this pub …….

The food is good, beer ok but there's a limited selection of real ales 2/3. There is space to park off road but road side parking is possible.

Food was dreadful no atmosphere never again

Couple of drinks in the beer garden. Dog friendly and good atmosphere. Been here before but didn't know about beer garden. Will definitely come again.

The food and service excellent however probably due to the age of the premises not disabled friendly. Carpark is pebbles making it very difficult to manage on two sticks. Two steps to get in. And no accessible toilets. Very difficult.

Been here twice, both times after a funeral. Which when you think about it is a bit strange. Both times, the food and service were excellent. It's a lovely pub that we'll have to return to soon.

Visited in a Saturday evening, as a party of 12. Service was fantastic, food was beautifully cooked and they didn’t keep us waiting either. Would definitely recommend and we’ll look forward to coming back. Food is slightly pricey but worth it in my opinion 👌

Went there for a Wake after Weeley Crematorium. Very friendly and obliging staff who created a sympathetic atmosphere.

Another lovely Sunday afternoon meal at The Black Boy. We love that our four legged friend is welcome and the food is always good. We had a super salmon & prawn starter and then a Halloumi salad and a Scampi. One day I will save some room for dessert as the home made cheesecake looked amazing!

Sorry to have to say, but today's visit was very much unexpected, I ordered garlic bread with my meal, I never knew so much mold came with it. More mold than bread, I would have expected the person prepping the food to notice or the server. Sadly that was not the case. And I was served this. Just to say. Unlikely Inwill be back there.

Had lunch @ this pub. The food is excellent, and the staff are fantastic. They ALWAYS make us feel like we’re part of the family! Can’t wait to go back 🥰

We popped in for lunch as we were in the area on holiday. The menu is quite small, but they do offer a specials board aswell. Everyone's meals were really delicious and the staff really friendly. The chips are very tasty, like little roast potatoes, definitely worth getting some of those as a side. Loads of off road parking and also an outside seating area to sit on warmer days

Went for a drink after a funeral. We packed the place out as there was about 30 of us, only 2 bar staff on but they did well to get everyone served as quickly as they could.

Had wonderful food here, 4 different meals each one absolutely perfect, andrea took care of us throughout, looked after our need thank you.

Excellent lunch at a very clean pub . Service was polite and prompt , good specials board and all the food was very well cooked . Good value for money .

We had a private function with a DJ, the staff were very polite helpful and friendly, they supplied the food which was served hot and delicious. Toilets very clean.

My husband and daughters food was good. They had pie and mash and the scampi. I had a burger. The roll and the burger were solid. Possibly microwaved!! The chips were lovely 😍 overall, good but not cheap.

Went here for my Father's wake back in April 2024. Very nice establishment, well maintained and looked after, nicely decorated and clean. Staff were really helpful for the afternoon. Buffet looked great, tasted great and lasted for those of us there. Hot drinks were available and other drinks were well priced. Even had a garden for the few kids in attendance to be able to go out and have a run around. Maybe next time we are in the area, we'll try having a meal.

We went for a funeral may 9th 24. The staff were kind, courteous and amazing. Food was good. Beautiful sunny day, so the garden was an added bonus.

Went to a wake at this pub . Welcoming staff , great buffet,good service all round would recommend. Good location plenty of room and parking.

Have a meal with my family a very nice pub, if you want food it's best if you phone to book a table , the food is very good, big portions, the service was brilliant, a definite go to place for a very nice meal.

Food and drink was lovely, dogs were welcome but only in the bar area.

We took our friends there on Friday while we were camping at homestead lakes, the lovely owners were having a night off so we were met, served and so well looked after by all the lovely ladies who work there. The food and service was impeccable. They are so dog friendly water and treats were brought straight to the table for our dogs. I highly recommend the black boy

Had a lovely family lunch here with the dog ! Very welcoming, busy but not overcrowded. Food was delicious, plentiful and reasonably priced too. The staff were very polite and helpful and this pub is really dog friendly, you can sit inside and we were offered water and dog biscuits. Well worth a visit.

Had husbands 80th birthday meal here 10 adults and 4 children, had not been here before, we were all very impressed. Staff very helpful and friendly in spite of being very busy. Took photos for us and very good with children, food excellent

A large party of us had Christmas lunch here. The food was lovely and plentiful, service was great with a really good atmosphere they went the extra mile, definitely recommend this lovely pub.

A little gem of a restaurant offering quality homemade food. Generous portions all freshly prepared.

Whilst we were there for a wake and not a meal I have to say the buffet was very good and staff handled everything very well.

Went for Sunday lunch. Waited 45 minutes for meal. I had roast beef which was inedible as was so tough. Dinner was swimming in gravy. Not for me, won’t be returning very disappointed.

We have been for meals and funerals, the staff are always very efficient and friendly, food always delicious, lovely country pub atmosphere, thank you for another great evening.

We were an 8 family group. Great service from Andrea and helper. We felt so well looked after and had a really good laugh. Definitely recommend for a relaxing low key evening meal.

Love it here,been countless times while at homestead, people and staff very friendly, could be the motorbike? Edit: another 200 mile round trip done, my brother, 600 miles, totally worth it, two great nights in a row, of course alcohol plays a part in increasing and colouring the enjoyment level but this is hands down the friendliest pub I've ever visited

As out of towners we we're hoping for a bit of traditional home cooked pub grub this afternoon. That's exactly what we got and was blown away by the quality. Best fish and chips I've had at a pub, huge portions and freshly cooked. The amazing bar staff even went out they're way to get me some take away ice!! A real gem this place, don't drive past pop in you won't be disappointed.

We held a wake here and my wife had lunch. The food was well prepared and there was a good selection of dishes. Staff were friendly and helpful. The pub is close to Weeley crematorium, so they are well organised for wakes. There is plenty of parking. Clean toilets. My wife enjoyed her lunch, though she thought it was a little expensive. Unfortunately, the restaurant closes at 6:00 pm.

We attended this pub for a wake. The staff were very diligent and thoughtful with regard to our needs and situation. A lovely venue, steeped in history, and has a story to tell. Well worth visiting, if you're in the area, and fancy a drink or two.
