A light but rich generous portion of carrot cake with my first proper coffee in months was a real treat. 5a’s popularity was evident by the huge queue, which they managed admirably. I wasn’t surprised - I’m a big fan of their sister venues.

Price advertised for a peanut butter ball to takeaway is £1.50. Go to till, “that’s £2”. I stated it was advertised at £1.50. She explained the reason for the (25%) price hike was “sugar tax”. Interesting because it has only been introduced for fizzy drinks at this stage and will of course if introduced for chocolates and sweets will be a maximum of 20%. Just wanted to share the response given to me as I’d prefer the company to be more open and honest about their price rise. Won’t be back. I will get my sugar hit elsewhere!

Generally found the staff all a bit more style over substance, with not a smile between them! In here for breakfast this morning. Ordered poached eggs on toasted sour dough bread and a pot of tea. This came to £12.50. It arrived a short while later but we had to ask for the tea. The poached eggs were overdone, the whites of the eggs like rubber and had an extremely strong taste of vinegar. I appreciate vinegar is used by many chefs in the poaching process but these tasted of nothing but vinegar. We ate one but that was it. I complained and the owner/manager offered another breakfast. We asked for one egg and toast and it arrived without the vinegar taste but the egg white again like rubber. What was most annoying though was that not one member of staff nor the manager came near us to check if the replacement was okay or to apologise. Will not ever be back here due to the quality of the food and service.

What a great little place this is. My wife took me in here a couple of days ago as we came up to town to start our Christmas shopping, (yeah, I'm that well prepared!!!).It's so small I almost didn't see it and then when I did it looked like there were no seats to be had inside, but upon closer inspection there was a space for 2! It took us to go in to see that there was a small counter just inside the door behind the coffee machine with 2 high bar stool type seats to sit on. This really was making the best use of limited seating. So we ordered, I got an Americano and a croissant and my wife had a latte and fancy tray bake, (the exact type of which alludes me just now). Well, they were great, the croissant was fresh and the jam that came with it was amazing, it was definitely a cut above what you would expect from most places, I love it when a café goes the extra mile with the simple stuff and makes sure the produce is good across the range. The coffee (my main area of interest in most cafes) was excellent and very well flavoured and full bodied with the bitterness well controlled. My wife's latte and the tray bake were also excellent, the latte was well presented in a proper latte glass (something I've notice a few places have failed to do recently) and the tray bake was great, really great. Properly baked to give texture and flavour and not just rely on throwing a load of sugar in.Although the little bar counter we sat at was very small (almost a shelf) and close to the door, there was still enough space to set down everything we needed and not be jostled by other people coming and going through the front door. We were only in for a quick bite so it was Ok but I'd guess that if you were going at a more leisurely pace it might be a little difficult to remain comfortable. The other tables and seating arrangements looked fine though, and despite the size remained un cramped looking. It was wet outside, but weather permitting there are a few tables outside that would be a pleasure to sit I think. Finally the staff were lovely and very friendly. Overall the space albeit cosy when filled to a certain point just looses out that last star, but over all its 5 star food and service with just what would be seen as cosy for many may just be cramped for others.

If you overlook the slightly "off" staff, this place is great. Coffee is the richest in Belfast, and lovely if you like that sort of thing - which I certainly do. I went for breakfast with my Dad and had sourdough bread with avocado, mint, smoked salmon and poached eggs and it was really delicious. Worlds apart from the General Merchants, to which i ventured yesterday and was utterly disgusted. I have been on other occasions to 5a for sweet treats, and the PB balls are particularly delicious. I heard about the place through "Check out my buns" at St George's market, as the latter seem to provide 5a with some goods. I have recommended to many of my friends and family! In a similar fashion to its sister cafe The General Merchant, I found this one didn't match the hype.Agreed, it's cosy. Yes, it's in a great location but the food and service let it down.I meet a business colleague here for a quick lunch. We went early to be sure to get a seat and we did. It was a wet, cold day and the place was roasting hot and steamed up. I went for a sandwich that sounded very appealing but when it arrived it was flat and uninspiring and without any garnish. It tasted fine but nothing to write home about. I frequently see their posts on Facebook and it always looks really exciting and enticing but what I had didn't live up to my expectations. I'll try again because i'd really love it to blow me away.My only other criticism would be the abrupt blond waitress who seemed put out when I asked her if we order at the counter or at the table. When I first heard that they were opening an artisan coffee shop around the corner from my house, I was excited to get down and give it a try. I wasn't disappointed.Located at the foot of the Lagan towpath, this café is perfectly located to sweep up those coming and going along the bank of the river lagan. 5A is therefore extremely busy on Saturday and Sunday mornings, but how busy this little café is testament to the quality of its coffee and food offering. Don't be afraid to queue for 5-10 minutes to get a seat, but I promise you it is worth it. The coffee is super, full of flavour, whatever blend/blends they use. Interestingly they only let very few of their staff operate the coffee machine, which in this case appears to lend to quality. They also offer a full range of teas, which I have also tried and enjoyed. In terms of food, they offer a small but beautiful range of homemade patisseries and tray bakes. I recommend the lemon polenta cake which is just amazing. Also on offer a tasty range of sandwiches and breakfast options. Again I recommend the pancakes with bacon and maple syrup for breakfast. There has been real thought put into the customers experience, which is evident in several ways. For example Heating lamps and blankets are offered outside in the autumn/winter. The presentation of all the coffee and food they provide- they use lovely crockery. There is also always great reading material.Seating is offered both inside, if you can get it, and outside, which is lovely under the sunshine when it is warm. They also do Bistro nights, closing the café for intimate private bookings. So at the end of my review , I should explain why I am only giving the café 4 out of 5, after I have waxed lyrical for the most part. The service. 90% of the time I have visited the staff have been great. At other times they have been quite rude, for example the time I asked for my loyalty card to be stamped and received a sigh and an eyebrow raise for my troubles. Or when I asked for a glass of water and the server simply pointed at the water jug in the corner. This is just one reviewers experience but as a fairly loyal customer I was disappointed Sorry to end on a slightly sour note. Overall 5A is a great place and I heartily recommend it.

It's easy to tell how good this little cafe is by the fact that it is constantly busy. The coffee is the best in Belfast (along with Established Coffee on Hill Street), the atmosphere is always fantastic and the food is so delicious (even if the portions aren't big enough for me!) My only minor (very minor) issue is that you've taken your last drop of coffee and the cup and plate is swiped away from beneath you - I was with my grandparents last week and my cup was taken away even when they hadn't finished which irritates me slightly! I had pancakes with maple syrup and bacon and they were so tasty and well made. The coffee was delish and I brought home some of the peanut butter treats available. They were amazing. Staff were friendly too. Only bad thing is that it is quite small so I can imagine it being difficult to get a seat at times

Love this wee place. Its got a bit of a local Londan cafe feel about it. It serves good food and great coffee. Staff are always helpful and attendant whilst working in a very confined space. it is hard to get a seat most of the time but if me and 5 or 10 other ejits are prepared to sit out side with blankets round them all for a cup of coffee they are obviously doing something right. Top notch best in Belfast.

As a very fussy coffee lover and foodie, I often have to choose different spots for good coffee, OR good food, a spot to get some work down, OR a spot to meet friends. This place is one of the few that does it all for me. The simplified menu keeps their costs/waste down, but that has no negative affect on the product; almost always a well thought out special for Breakfast or Lunch. The food and coffee is as good (and as on trend) as the decor, no style over substance here! There is an overwhelming sense that, the folks here serve what they would want to eat, rather than simply what everyone else serves in Belfast. It is this hipster style confidence that ensures everything you get is delicious and full of character. Admittedly it may confuse and offend some with traditional tastes - not for the greasy spoon, panini and 'rabbit food' haters. Quirky, tasty, and well executed. A charming little place that is quickly becoming my favourite.

I wish we all had a local cafe like this!. Great coffee and treats, tasty breakfast options, earthy homemade soups, salads and rustic style daily specials that are adaptable for vegetarians, gluten free or vegan as well as the meat lover!. Simple and delicious and a delight on a sunny day to sit outside and soak up the rays and enjoy your food.

Visited for lunch on Monday with a friend. We sat at the window looking out on a charming outdoor patio which will be fantastic when weather is a little warmer. I enjoyed a trio of salads which were not your ordinary bog-standard but tasty chickpea, quinoa and bean and another which escapes me, accompanied by a thick slice of tasty homemade bread and tapinade. The flat white was just fab and really did the trick for me. Next time I will try one of the tempting gluten-free treats with it! I noticed there are evening meals too and it's BYOB.

Living around the corner, we were delighted to hear that we were going to get our first local café and have been regular patrons since it opened. We still enjoy visiting but the fact is that it has a great offering and has become very popular. However, it is small and, with that in mind, it begs a bit of common sense from people who demand the right to spend ages over a coffee or expect a wide range of restaurant-standard food. What they do, they do well – give them a break.

Average food, pretentious decor and ignorant staff.Takes advantage of being the only cafe in the area by being quite expensive but then serves very small portions.Overall there's nothing good I can say about the place.

This was previously a hidden gem but it has become increasingly difficult to get a seat. It's not hard to understand why. The coffee is gorgeous - creamy, rich, and not too bitter, with a big caffeine hit! The little foosties (esp the peanut butter balls!) are extremely moreish too and there's always plenty of gluten / dairy free and vegan stuff for those so inclined. I've sampled a couple of lunch dishes too and they were also VERY tasty, I wasn't expecting as much from such a small unassuming spot. Staff are very friendly too.

Although I have been several times to this great cafe and love it I had to comment on the attitude of the staff on my most recent visit .... It is not a good thing when the staff basically ask you to move on when they think your time is up!! I have heard others comment on this but have only just experienced it myself and it does leave a bad taste !Don't spoil a lovely cafe with rude staff !

Stopped off for coffee this morning for the first time and I was extremely impressed by the cafe. The decor inside and out is amazing. Very modern and classy. The coffee was excellent and the seating outside comfortable. Staff were polite and efficient. I'll make a point of returning to try the food.

I love this place, and having worked in cafés all over the world for 10 years it's great to have this place just across the river! The staff are so friendly, coffee's best in the city and they have a smaller, but well selected good menu. These guys have thought of everything whether it is a good range of books, bicycle parking or treats for my dog.

I have read some great reviews about this place so decided to try it for lunch with my daughter. Since it was my first time in this place I didn’t know the format for ordering your food i.e. if you place your order first or your order is taken once seated. So I decided to take a set. Several members of staff saw me and made no attempt to ask was everything ok. It was towards the end of lunch time so the place was not busy. After a while I worked out the format. I would have left only my daughter wanted to stay. The lunch menu is limited in terms of what sandwiches are on offer - 4 to choose from. In fact the sandwich that I did order I was told there was none left. I decided on another sandwich, my daughter had a sausage roll and a drink. I had a coffee the bill totalled £10. The sandwich was heated up and was so dry and tasteless that I had to ask for some mayonnaise. It certainly was not value for money, the staff are so unfriendly and the place is definitely taking advantage of the fact that it is the only coffee shop around that area. One to miss!! There are better places to have a nice cup of coffee and a sandwich in stranmillus Village.

Yesterday my wife and I went to this ridiculously staged cafe and were completely blanked by the vain little girls behind the counter. Do not go, there are many other decent cafés in town. The coffee lacked flavour and the brownie was foul. The bikes on the walls look silly and as for the Smeg in the centre of the cafe, well what a sorry attempt to be trendy. Do not go.

The very best coffee shop in Belfast - period. What a gem - the pastries, sandwiches, tray bakes, pain au chocolat, soup etc. are superb - how do they remain so consistently good with apparently so little effort? Many competitors huff ad puff but never achieve the standard set at 5A! And what a delight the staff are - even when they are overwhelmed with customers they smile and have time for everyone. The craic between staff and clients emphasizes the real neighborhood feel that the cafe has created in very short time - "In all of Belfast there is only one!" There are two downsides to all this good stuff:(i) the rest room can only be accessed through the kitchen(ii) it is so incredibly busy that getting a seat at peak times is extremely difficultHowever both of these gripes are due to the size of 5A and outside the control of its management. Congratulations to whoever spotted 5A as a potential cafe site!!!

This is a great wee spot, a relatively recent find for me. Although it is cosy and always busy, we have never failed to find a couple of seats for lunch. Sandwiches are really fantastic, usually a special and a standard vegi option too which I appreciate especially! The homemade soups and salads are lovely and varied and the cakes and traybakes look wonderful although I've always been too stuffed to sample any. I really like the decor, it gives it a unique character and atmosphere. The owners really have made the most of their wee space!

A friend introduced me to 5A last October and it's become my favourite coffee / lunch venue since .The cafe itself is really tiny which adds to it's charm however there are times when I've arrived and it's been full and have had to go somewhere else The coffee is excellent with lovely home made scones which are def the best in the area... The lunch menu shows that the owners have a passion for food and good flavours ..I've always enjoyed anything I've eaten Owners and staff are always friendly and pleasant Look forward to them expanding or opening another place soon !

I came on this by chance and enjoyed the coffee and a cake so much, I went straight back later for lunch. At last a cafe in Belfast which isn't a chain and offers something that little bit different. The pastries, cakes and scones lined up along the counter look very tempting. As someone who rejects a place on the strength of 'bad' scones I scored this place highly. The fruit scones looked like perfection. Great to see gluten free, wheat free and dairy free baked goods which aren't the 'sawdust' this usually implies. I had a blueberry sponge cake with my coffee and can vouch for that. Lovely! The coffee is good too but I agree with another reviewer that the cups are on the small side. Back later for lunch, I had their trio of salads. This included a variety of green salad leaves, balsamic reduction, pickled walnuts, goats cheese, strawberries, beetroot, a tapenade style paste and a hefty slice of wheaten bread. The broccoli and almond soup looked good too, as did the speciality bread sandwiches and filled rolls. I liked the healthy, home baked bias of the menu. They opened last September. Judging by the numbers packing it out today, they seem to have already carved out their niche. Just off Stranmillis roundabout, close to the embankment and with outdoor seating in place for good weather, come the better days this place will have queues forming.

For those that have to visit the US Consulate in Belfast it is out in the suburbs with nothing apparently around for miles and it is a pain if you are waiting for somebody who is in the Consulate. However you should go back to the main road turn left and then either catch a bus for 2 stops or walk 10 minutes to the roundabout. Turn right and you find this excellent little cafe. I just had coffee but was amazed to be given freshly ground decaff coffee instead of the usual sachets or even worse instant. It was delicious and the menu looked extremely inviting.

Friendly staff, excellent lunches especially soups and salads and delicious home baking - best florentines I have ever tasted. Only suggestion for change would be the coffee - it's great but the cups are far too small especially for the price - either get bigger mugs or offer free refills. The take- away portions are much bigger. Decor is quirky and I'm not sure it works, it just seems a little scruffy and the space is cramped but who cares when the food and the coffee are so good?

A nice little café with a good selection of quality pastries and a tasty looking lunch menu. Not really sure what they're going for with the décor...kind of similar to lots of places with vintage odds and ends about the place and a couple of bikes on the wall....maybe it's an attempt to be a bit "interesting" in a vintage, shabby chic kind of way like a lot of cafes in Belfast. But to honest the food and staff are so nice that they don't need all the unnecessary bike stuff. Hot chocolate and coffee were lovely....but hate it when sugar is left in open cups or tins on the table....it's so unhygienic! so my partner didn't put any in his coffee. Other than that can't fault the place.

I live just round the corner from this awesome coffee shop, just a few days before I had said to my friend the only thing we need on this corner is a coffee shop then up it popped. Perfect coffee at a average price. Buns cakes and biscuits are yummy also. Salad and sandwiches are delicious a. They also have a nice outside sitting area , which is great for the oh so necessary coffee/cigarette combo. Sometimes there are nice dogs to pet too, a nice meeting place for all walks of life.

Sadly expensive. The coffee is nice and a nice location, but for the rest, over priced... no change from £5 for a coffee and biscuit. The cake is very dry and portions too small. I at first was pleased to see the bicycle cafe open but after several visits i am under the impression they feel they have no competition close by and therefore they seem to think they can charge what they like.

This as-yet-unnamed place just opened across the street from us, and we absolutely love it. Cute, cosy interior with a couple bicycles on the wall, great coffee table books, lovely outdoor seating. Really feels like a little Brooklyn café in the heart of our little village. They have a lot of thoughtful touches; for example they have a bike rack outside when they are open so cyclists enjoying the Lagan Meadows can pop in on the way to/from/during a ride! The coffee is good, and the food pastries look delicious - I had a little chorizo quiche thing on Sunday and it was completely yum. Will comment as I try the other things!Really so glad this has opened up in our neighborhood.
