The Thai elephant in the Duke of wellington pub is a 10/10 Thai restaurant. The chef was so nice, and the food was amazing and such good value. Will definitely be coming back!

Highly recommend! Authentic & delicious Thai food with lovely staff - they’ve moved into the Duke of Wellington pub and more people need to know about them! £12.95 for a Thai curry and rice was an absolute bargain in this day and age. Such a great meal, will definitely be coming back!

This review is for a home delivery, first the food tasted nice. Not the best but not the worst either. However, for £75 for 4 people the portions were very small. 7 dishes in total, with one costing £14. Each dish was using the smaller of the plastic take away tub's and only one was full.... The mussels (that's right.. All shells). I understand costs are increasing, but half empty containers at any price is not acceptable. The crispy duck had 6 little slices and a the rest was fried rice noodles (or something like that). Was a shame and now I'm ready for a my second dinner.

We had a really disappointing experience - the food must rate as some of the worse Thai food I have ever eaten (and I have been to Thailand many times) plus the service was diabolical - a very miserable, old and angry man who only appeared when we asked the barmaid for service as we were ignored most of the time. It seems like the owner doesn't care about their business. There are plenty of decent Thai restaurants in the locality that I will go back to but never to this one.

Tried this on a whim and was very pleasantly surprised. Set in the right hand side of The Wellington pub, the decor was straight from the restaurant. Service was very good and a wide range of drinks available from the bar. The best part was the food - it was outstanding. The flavours as authentic as the ingredients - imported from Thailand and skilfully prepared by Nikki the Chef and proprietor. Both the red and green curries were delicious, just the right amount of spice with the flavours of the ingredients readily distinguishable through the heat. The best Thai food since Thailand and reasonably priced too. Looking forward to going back or having a takeaway in the very near future.

I really really wanted to like this place as we had been years ago when it was in the former location. I can't fault the food - we all has a delicious meal. However the owners were extremely overbearing - what was a nice touch at first ended up getting annoying when they kept talking to us while we were trying to eat. It really made for an uncomfortable dining experience. I would probably get takeaway from here if I was local, but I wouldn't dine in again.

TERRIBLE!!!! No flavour at all. If I make plain grilled chicken and boiled rice myself it would have been tastier. Upon calling Thai elephant to say the meal was not as expected they just said ‘you ordered the wrong meal’. Would NOT recommend!!!!! Go to Thai Table in Caversham.. they are amazing.

Food is always of a really high quality. The staff are super attentive and happy to explain more information about particular dishes. I had the Pad Thai which is a favourite from here and the portion is always very generous. I feel very fortunate to have such high quality, authentic cuisine so close to home!

Food good, service was a little slow, and very quiet on a Friday night, so lacking in atmosphere. High prices for dishes as well. We used to be regulars here but seem to be falling out of love with the place.

Food nice, service not great. Regulars seemed to be well pampered, fair enough. Book in advance. Price a bit higher than Thai near bye.

The best Padthai that I ever had. My partner love King prawn in red curry and coconut milk. We love this restaurant so much and we willing to drive for miles just for these. Highly recommended.

Ultimately disappointed. £40 for nothing very special. Weeping Tiger bland. Sorry as really wanted a special Anniversary supper. Starter was nice but perhaps that was because I was really hungry. Blah. No repeat business.

Raw chicken was served in our takeaway which we only realised half way through eating a dish leading to a member of our party having severe food poisoning. Our food was also 30 minutes late. Will definitely not be ordering again.

Fish dish came out stone cold ,chicken was tough and beef dish was unchewable even the after eight mint in dish with bill was half missing very expensive for a 1star meal avoid.

Overcooked ‘old’ food. Really quite disgusting. They are totally disorganised and rude. I actually felt nauseous when I tasted the duck 🤮

My husband went in at 6pm and ordered a take-away, he was told it would be 30mins. He went off and ran some errands came back 30 mins later only to be told it would be another 30 minutes! It actually took another 45. I know it’s Saturday night but that was ridiculous. To add insult, the vegetarian pad Thai that we ordered actually had chicken in it. I don’t eat meat so that was really rather off-putting.

Had a nice time at the Thai Elephant tonight!! Food was good! Great friendly service. Will be returning.

Visited the Thai Elephant for a family dinner last night. The service was excellent and very welcoming, the food was freshly made and absolutely delicious. The sea bass was beautifully prepared (not to mention fresh!) and the pad Thai was one of the best I have had !

Ordered a delivery for 4 and it was very poor quality food and way too hot and spicy for 3 out of the 4 of us. Never again.

During lockdown, we ordered (as a treat) take-away one night. We hadn't been to the restaurant for years - but remembered it was good. Things seem to have taken a downturn. The soups were good, but the main dishes varied from 'just about edible' to 'downright disgusting'. Cheap, bulk-out ingredients like peppers and tomatoes proliferated every dish. The duck was covered in fatty skin and the lamb was gristle and fat. Sweet & sour pork was just about ok, but was a bland grey-green colour without much tang or flavour. Massively disappointing apart from rice and soup. And - it's not cheap. We complained and (eventually) get a partial refund. Would we recommend? Nope. Had much better Thai food from stalls in Camden market (for about a quarter of the price).

Not the best I have had but was ok, I feel slightly expensive and some random combinations with some of the dishes. The only downside was the place did not look very clean at all hence 3/4 stars. Will I try again probably not.

Unbelievable takeaway! We love Thai Elephant when you eat in, but tonight they surpassed themselves with a delicious, piping hot delivery right on time and full of flavour. The mixed starters are a must and the Penang, Massaman and green curry are delicious. Really impressed, will order again.

We got a takeaway delivered here on Friday night. We spent £35 and it was only the spring rolls that were edible. The beef satay was burned and gristley and satay sauce tasted off. The duck pancakes were dry and the Thai green curry tasted very strange and was too spicy to eat. Very disappointed as we have eaten here previously and it was nice! Seemed like they were trying to get rid of old/poor quality stock.

Only takeaway at the moment, however the food is excellent and service was excellent

The restaurant was dead and me and my 2 friends stood at the door for ages feeling like idiots and asked for a table and they just looked at us. Finally offering us a table with NO SPACE for us to sit down. Really weird vibe in there - so we went next door to Gaylord and spent £150.

The people running the business are very rude and unprofessional. We ordered food and particularly asked food to be made non spicy. the person on the phone was impatient, rude and racist.first of all they didn't deliver the right order and then refused to give us refund.We had travelled all the way from Maidenhead. We could not eat that food and it was a complete waste of our time and money.

Disappointing. The staff would most definitely benefit from some front of house training. Being pointed to a table and granted at rather than guided is not really what you expect. The menu choice is ok, the food was overpriced for what you get, I have experienced much better locally. I felt £70 for two for a starter and mains with no alcohol and only one soft drink was shocking to be honest, along with a 10% service charge was almost a joke. I wouldn’t blink at paying this if the food and service blew me away but it didn’t. Not somewhere I would choose to revisit anytime soon.

decent food n courteous staffs. could improve upon multi sea food dishes. predominantly onions,pepper exists n not seafood. can improve upon service with tissues/hand towels served.

Friendly atmosphere, intricate and beautiful decorations! However every dish is full of onions and peppers. 2 adults and 2 children costs £140.00. Too expensive for the quality of foods. Will not recommend or go back again.

I ordered a take away during the Coronavirus lock down . It arrived promptly , but went down hill from there on. I ordered Duck with a sauce. Sadly the only liquid that it had was the duck fat , and it was swimming in it . We also ordered sweet and sour vegetables.....the sauce was water thin with hardly any taste. The noodle dish was also very greasy. The sticky rice was good , as were the spring rolls.!!!! To be fair, when i called to complain, I was offered a free meal, which i declined as i wouldn't want to order there food again, so I did get a refund on most dishes....I paid for the rice and spring rolls.

Hadn't had Thai for a while and given current climate we wanted something close we could pick up. Great experience and lovely food (Pad Thai was delicious). Staff were very friendly, happy to support in these challenging times!

Been here several times over the last year or so. 4.5-5* Service 4* But overall experience had to be no more than 2*. Why? Absolutely freezing and they refuse to do anything about it. It's probably a listed building so they are limited in terms of glazing but they seem to hate to put the heating on. The very first time we went over a year ago it was so cold and none of the many radiators were on and they eventually put the wall heater on when we asked. Several times since then we've been for the food and it's been cold (rads ice cold again) but we'd prepared with thermals and jumpers and keeping our coats on. This was the last time for us though. This time the excuse was the boiler having packed up the day before, but we know it's been like this over a year as rads are always off. And they didn't put the wall heater on (claiming it was just Aircon when last year it blew out heat for us) , just a small air blower when asked. We've now learned they either can't or won't heat the place and this is such a shame as it ruins what should be a nice experience and not particularly cheap. The food is good so I may go there again in the summer as I have nothing against them. I would just never recommend it any time when it's not warm though as noone should be made to feel freezing sitting there with coats, scarves etc indoors in this day and age. I'd rather have had beans on toast at home. Comfort is everything!

Great food at reasonable prices

Excellent, attentive and polite service. The food was varied and flavoursome with characteristic Thai delicacy. We had a lovely and quiet winter evening meal here with some wholesome, warming food. Lovely character to the place and a very welcoming atmosphere. We will be back! :)

We popped in to try something new after doing some shopping and are so glad we did! The food was amazing and the service was exceptional, with the staff giving everything a personal touch. I have to say that this is now our FAVORITE Thai go to. We started with the satay, had the Thai Beef, noodles, fried rice, and finished off with mango sorbet. So stuffed and soooo happy. Well done Thai Elephant, can’t wait to visit again.

Bit of a delayed review, was here a few weeks back but I wouldn't recommend for the food, the table wasn't clean, and the trip to the bathroom wasn't great either. Sorry but I won't be going back.

This place is a hidden gem because the food was perfect and so was the staff . The atmosphere is so beautiful. This was a Friday night and it was meant to be 6 but 2 could not make and they were so understanding. The staff was perfect. The shocking thing was it was not full and there were only a few people in this amazing restaurant. I would tell you all you have to eat here because you have not lived at all. You will think you have until you have been there and then you will realise you have not.

Delicious dinner. Fresh, spicy and good with the Thai rosé wine we ordered. Excellent curry choices for gluten- and dairy-free.

Just went in for a Monday evening takeaway. It was quiet but the staff were very friendly, food was excellent.

We had a very nice meal for four of us but unfortunately there was nobody else in the restaurant that evening (Thursday night). I didn’t have any reasons to fault the restaurant whatsoever as the meal was tasty, well prepared and the service was polite and attentive. But please keep visiting to keep the restaurant open!!

Only two tables when we arrived on Sunday at 7pm, not shown to table, pointed to where we sat only, no smiles at all throughout the evening. Food ok nothing to shout home about , had the set menu. Staff had kitchen uniform on, I felt it looked grubby and would not go back.

We live a few miles away and have visited the Thai Elephant on and off over the years. The staff are friendly (and Thai) and the food is great and freshly cooked in the kitchen. Every time we go there we always think we should go more often.

Friendly staff, brilliant food, lovely look and feel to the restaurant, prices are mid range but well worth the money in my honest opinion. Definitely will visit again soon.

Have visited this horrendous establishment twice now and I didn't think it could go from bad to worse. Turns out it can. If you want to pay for expensive bad tasting, re-heated, greasy food this is the place for you.

Very sweet service and room ambience. Food v average and some dishes we left because they weren’t great. Toilets need attention. Sadly disappointed as was excited to go.

Not busy at the time we went. The food was faultless. Specialty and vegetarian dishes beautiful. Came as a family, the heating not working but we were soon warm with overhead. The curries were excellent and also the soups. Will be returning.

The place looked pretty amusing but turned out to be just a sh*thole. Group of 5 on a Saturday evening. The staff hadn't bothered to clear their own post and rucksacks which were still draped over the largest table in the centre of the restaurant at 10pm. There must have been people in earlier that evening because their washing-up was piled along the floor of the hallway. The starter platters tasted like something Kerry Katona would serve at Christmas. My main (fish) was pretty good (though very very spicy) and service throughout the meal was begrudging. Had we been charged £20 per head for this meal it might have been a pretty quirky and fondly remembered evening. They stung us for £35 a head which just felt like an insult. [the surprise was that we had been charged for £45 for starters when all five of us had just shared 1 plate of defrosted prawns wrapped in filo cardboard] We complained at the unreasonably high bill (something we have never done before) and it was explained that the dishes are expensive because the ingredients are flown in from Thailand! The one guy who was front of house eventually gave us £10 off our £180 bill after about 10 minutes of discussion and handwringingly complained that even this discount would be taken out of his pay by the owner. Really do not recommend.

This is a really nice restaurant, cosy good atmosphere, but for some reason I always seem to have difficult conversations here. Probably just me.

Ordenó llevar. Hubo un caos absoluto en la colección y tomó 30 minutos adicionales. Otros que esperaban la recolección se dieron por vencidos y desearía haber hecho lo mismo. El único plato comestible era el arroz. No había casi verduras en mi curry verde vegetariano. . . pero encontré un poco de pollo (!!) Estoy bastante seguro de que también usaron MSG. Los papeles de primavera de alguna manera fueron quemados en el interior. Gran pérdida de tiempo y dinero:

Me senté temblando en este restaurante que tenía un olor a moho. Los entrantes eran normales, los platos principales se servían antes de que se hubieran limpiado las costillas y otros restos de arranque y, cuando pedimos cubiertos, pensé que tal vez habíamos pedido la tierra a juzgar por la cara de las camareras. Entonces fue insípido y apenas cálido. Una comida muy decepcionante y definitivamente no volveremos.

food is good, but service need to be improved

After a long day on site popped in for some grub. Food was lovely and service was superb looking forward to going back. 👌

The decor is typically Thai and interesting to look at but as the restaurant was practically empty on a Friday night this should have been a warning sign. There were 2 staff members who both served and cooked tge food (the choice of headgear gave that away) which also meant that we were left hanging around for drinks. To be honest that wouldn't have been a problem if the food was good but it wasn't it was terrible. The mixed starters were 'ok' but our main course of Pad Thai was overcooked, very oily and the chicken and prawns unidentifiable. We definitely won't be going back.

A couple of times recently, we have tried to go there for lunch and found it closed ( at 12:30ish when their website, Google, etc all day it's open.). It's been a huge disappointment as I love their food.

Last minute evening meal out, chose here and thoroughly enjoyed the food. This is traditional Thai food, cooked well. No frills, good cuisine and friendly staff.

We reguarly visit this restaurant and we always enjoy all of the thai food! Our favourite dish is the Tom Yum soup and the chef even makes it to our preference. Staff are welcoming and the restaurant has unique and authentic decor. Highly recommend!
