Taphouse Bar and Restaurant in Magherafelt

I always meant to try here but was never passing at the right time. Last night it finally came together. We had a lovely family meal. The food was delicious and the staff were very attentive. Portions as expected were generous and hot on arrival. The Bar experienced a power outage, but the staff continued, unphased by the extraordinary situation. Food continued to arrive with joyous cheer as the lights came back on after a 20minute or so black out. Highly recommend a stop here for a family or group meal. Check bookings in advance as it seems like a very popular local restaurant.

Didn’t expect such a small village would have such a great restaurant. Staff were lovely too. Menu had great choices. Would definitely recommend.

Very disappointed with our experience and service. Two types of steak were ordered for the table and the server mixed up the order. We didn't realise the error until the end of the meal. When asked if we enjoyed our meal we explained the mix-up and also that we didn't receive the butter we asked for. The lady getting our bill apologised and said she would pass on our complaint. Given that it was quite a big mix-up I feel one of the steaks should have been deducted from the bill as the person who received rump steak instead of fillet didn't enjoy their meal. Our complaints were glossed over, we won't be back and wouldn't recommend this restaurant.

Very handy to the Seamus Heaney Home Place for a pre-show dinner. Telephone booking answered promptly and a table reserved at short notice. Staff very welcoming. Later on Friday entertainment was due: 5.30 pm popular with families: all well behaved . Sea Bass main and (generous)Chilli chicken starter both excellent - we went overboard with really good beef chips. House Sauvignon very acceptable and not overpriced. All very efficient. Cozy atmosphere. Reviews we had read were somewhat mixed but we found nothing whatever to fault. Would not hesitate to return.

We went here on advice of our host Colm Scullion where we spent some time of our holidays. It was a very good advice and we spent a very nice evening (3 Kids and 3 adults)

This is just my meal I had a bad experience with. My mum and sister enjoyed their meal and said it was delicious. I chose to get the vegetable soup and the second I saw it, I knew I wouldn’t like it. We reported it to staff and they were excellent about it, took it off our bill and give us a dessert in place of it free of charge.

I have had numerous meals in The Taphouse and always have been excellent. The menu is has all your standards plus a few more different options you dont normally see which is great to see. The staff are great, always friendly and nothing is ever a problem. Steak night on a Wednesday is great value and i would say to book to make sure you get in. The decor of the bar is beautiful and they have great entertainment at the weekends. It is surprisingly large with a bar, lounge, outside area and also bar, function room out the back. Definitely deserves the great reviews and cant wait to be back.

Excellent steaks - sides more than expected. All in all a bargain for a midweek dinner. Can only compliment food and excellent staff We’ll done the Taphouse

We eat here regularly and the food and the level of service is always great. Friendly staff and lovely atmosphere. Price as expected. Reasonable.

Tap house staff are nice, food is pretty good. Steaks are probably the best thing on the menu. Eels delicious but minuscule portions. If you are a vegetarian however, don’t bother. They seem to just use whatever leftover roast veg they have and use it for all their vegetarian dishes, even tortillas! Vegetarian dishes are very obviously an afterthought. It’s a shame because the rest of the family love the food here.

Looked pretty shabby on the outside but was very pretty and well-decorated on the inside. Upscale and fancy food, £55 for 3 people. Food wasn’t perfect but was very good. Service was alright.

Food was just OK, nothing special, some meals just lukewarm & 2 meals came out wrong in the end but the biggest letdown was the service, it was terrible. There appeared to be 3 staff on but we waited ages to order & finally had to wave someone over. Unfortunately this set the tone for the entire meal, we had to go looking for service everytime we needed something. Staff were so unattentive and really couldn't have cared less. It was a very poor dining experience & we definitely won't be back.

This restaurant is a must for anyone in the area. Brilliant food, an excellent selection of beers and incredibly hospitable staff. Dermot went the extra mile (literally) to make sure we got home safe. We'll be back!

This was the best meal I have had in Northern Ireland. The duck pancakes to start were so delicious. I would highly reccomend the chicken stack, and the pepper corn sauce was to die for. Amazing food, amazing service. We will be back!

I cannot rate this restaurant highly enough, there was twenty of us including six young children. We were there for my grandsons Christening and nothing was to much trouble for the staff. Our meal was pre ordered but some of our group mixed up their order and it was no bother to the staff to sort it out. The meal was delicious and when asked for more gravy it was brought out in seconds, again no bother for the staff. Our dessert order couldn't be found but the young waitress said it was no problem taking it again and even when my two year old grandson got in the way a couple of times the staff were more than pleasant to him. Will definitely be back.

We went to the Taphouse simply because we had been given a gift voucher for Christmas. I don’t think I would have been through the door otherwise to be honest.How wrong was I to assume it would be mediocre like most of the other restaurants in South Derry?The interior is finished to a very nice standard, the staff are brilliant, the Guinness is great and the menu is superb.Will be back many times.Keep up the good work folks!

We are here on a busy Saturday night. The menu has a great selection. Everything we ordered was excellent. Would highly recommend the prawn starter! The service was very warm and friendly and everything was very reasonably priced. Will definitely be back.

Was in on Saturday evening with my husband and it was excellent. Staff were fabulous and food was perfect. My only complaint (but it’s not a complaint at all) is that the portions were too big!!! I had Salt and Chili chicken for starter and it would easily have down me for my main. Will definitely return!

First time visiting Taphouse will definitely be back everything about it was excellent, decor food and staff were first class would highly recommend this beautiful restaurant.

Had a lovely meal and the Service was absolutely excellent. There were a lot of children in our group (who are well behaved) and the staff were all really good with them so they enjoyed the evening as well. Food was delicious and portions were huge. Definitely be back!

We had a meal for 20 friends and family last Saturday and it was out of this world. The service could not of been better and the food was super!! Nothing was a bother. All 20 of us ate and were more than delighted with the food. A few ate from the game menu and said it was brilliant. Everyone stayed until closing time and danced the night away downstairs. The band ‘Atmosphere’ were playing and the buzz in the bar was unreal.. We cant wait to get another evening here. Wouldn’t go anywhere else! Looking forward to our next visit :)

Was in today for lunch with my 2 daughters, my mum and grandson for my daughters birthday, the new lunch menu is so hard to pick from as we all could of ate everything on the menu, food was amazing and plenty of it, staff could not of been nicer or more helpful especially with my grandson, they even out of their own accord brought out dessert with a sparkler for my daughter, would highly recommend here and will be back very soon

Before heading to the Seamus Heaney Homeplace next door, we visited the Taphouse, where I had the best steak ever in this lovely pub/restaurant. I was told the steak came from the local butchers. We were in a party of 6 and the menu had no vegetarian options for 3 of our party, however on asking for veg options, we were handed an entirely different menu. I would recommend they incorporate the two menus for choice. My steak was cooked rare the way I had asked for, and it was melt in the mouth. I had asked for the pepper sauce on the side, but I really did not need it as the taste was wonderful. Served with one large mushroom, roasted tomatoes and crispy onions, the meal will stay in my memory for a very long time. Added to the fact that the service was fast, the staff were very friendly and helpful, and the background music was just right. Lovely experience. Forgot to take photos.

I went to the Taphouse for my sisters 30th birthday dinner and I must admit that not hearing very much about it I was slightly skeptical, however, from the moment my partner and I went in the service was professional and welcoming, and the atmosphere was superb.We had to wait a while on the table, however this was NO fault of the Taphouse, we arrived early and the other family members had rescheduled the meal time and we sat at the very quint irish style bar surrounded with Seamus Heaney memorabilia and poems and pictures (it is 2 buildings away from the Seamus Heaney Centre).The food and waiting service was absolutely second to none. Absolutely beautiful....I thought I would be adventurous and try the smoked eel for starters and Judith, the Manager, gave some very good descriptive advice followed by the smoked Haddock....yea I was a bit fishy in my choices but by God it was well worth it!!I would give 5 stars right across the board for the food, service and atmosphere. We will definitely be back again very soon. There was not one person there who had anything negative to say about any part of it. Even the wine list was brilliant and very reasonable. Thank you for a brilliant night!

We would have driven past but needed to find somewhere for lunch before visiting the Seamus Healey Home Place.Beautifully refurbished but retaining a cosy pub feel. Very efficient and friendly staff. Plenty of choice on the Sunday Menu. All the dishes we chose consisted of excellent ingredients well cooked and beautifully presented with generous portions.Great value for money.I would rate it as at least as good as anywhere in this area and better than many.

This place was a really nice find. Lovely decor inside and friendly staff. The food was great and the drinks menu was good too. Slightly on the expensive side but I’d happily go back and pay the £60 if I was in the are again.

We called here around 4.30pm last week as passing. The floor staff were welcoming. Disappointed that the evening menu only was being served as just wanted something lighter at that time of the day. I went for the goats cheese starter but it came out with just goats cheese, coleslaw, blobs of red sauce and gem lettuce standing uo. Just a plate of too much creamy food. My duck was very overcooked. Not somewhere I would go back to for food but it's a nice bar which has been recently decorated.

Very good food at reasonable enough prices and and friendly staff too...good variety on menu too to satisfy all our group.

We called in to this place for a spot of lunch, having a little break from Seamus Heaney Home Place, what a lovely little find. It looked very much as if it had been recently refurbished, it had an oldy worldy restaurant look with a very modern feel. There was a newspaper article framed on the bar raving about the chowder. When we asked about that it was pointed out that the chowder was on the evening menu, however the waitress said she would ask the chef, who said it would be no bother-that is service for you. No wonder people raved about it, it was like no chowder I had ever encountered before. It was a huge meal in a bowl, with large chunks of fish and potato. The article had made remark that they would have liked to have seen shellfish and smoked fish in the chowder, well whilst there were no shellfish, the chef had certainly taken the comment on board, as there was plenty of smoked fish. A chef that listens to their customers is always a good thing. I can't comment on the cost because I didn't pay, so even more of an enjoyable experience. The Pinot was crisp and ice cold served in a large glass.
