Cute place down the stairs. Had enough space, the service was kind and the food was relatively fast ready. Very delicious Royal Salmon with a light sauce Hollandaise - a good portion to keep you full the whole morning!

Very very nice small spot for your breakfast/brunch in Edinburgh, the pancakes were super soft and moist, I love the contrast with the blueberry and lemon custard that made them not overwhelmingly sweet. The staff was really nice and I definitely wanna mention that in the bathroom there are so many self care products available if needed, including pads, which is a very sweet gesture!

Both waitress are lovely with smiles on their face but food improvement needed I ordered the light breakfast, it was very oily! I mean like VERY OILY! I need to use a napkin to absorb the oil. My wife ordered the Egg Royale which is flooding with cold hollandaise sauce. There is some damp cloth smell too, not sure where it’s coming from. Hoping this place will get better.

The place is near the center, and offers good food to have brunch and breakfast. We had a Scotsman and a light breakfast and rations are generous. While the ambiance may be a bit noisy, service was spot on. Really recommend this place.

Very disappointed. Sign outside and web said hot food until 3 pm. We turned up at 2.01 pm to be told no hot food as kitchen closing at 2 today. No exception made despite couple entering immediately before us able to order. Sad really as eaten here before and loved it and was looking forward to it on infrequent trip to Edinburgh...

The place was good in general, although it is a little small but it is cozy, the only thing I thought was that the quantity/price was unbalanced. From my point of view, all options were considerably expensive for the amount. Additionally, they took a long time to serve, possibly more than 45 minutes.

Pish, absolute pish! This had so many good reviews online and I have no idea why! The restaurant was full and there seemed to be many staff, we were immediately given a bottle of tap water but no glasses. We ordered drinks and breakfast, the empty table next to us had dirty plates on it for the entire time we were there. Our breakfast turned up, it came with dry toast, no offer of spread as there was literally no one around to ask for anything. As for the food, everything tasted very salty, there were no condiments on the table and the drinks were served at the end of our meal. They apologised for the lateness of the drinks and comped them for us, but that was one of the most terrible experiences for breakfast i have had and I have no idea why everyone is giving it 5 stars. It may have been a bad day, but with so many other options in the city to choose from, maybe rethink going here.

Two waitresses were very accommodating and kind. Nice atmosphere and vibe to the restaurant but I am very disappointed that there was chilli’s added to my girlfriend’s classic avocado toast. This was not mentioned on the menu, she is intolerant to spice and what if she was allergic? The server was apologetic but I think this should be clearly written on the menu as if not, if something has a reaction to it(allergic) you would be quick to change!

We were in Edinburgh for 2 days with much disappointment in most of our meals and during the first day my partner and I happen to chance upon this cute little basement spot. Dare I say it's our highlight of the trip, we went for brunch on the first day, did not have a booking and they managed to have a table for us. We had the pistachio pancakes and eggs Benedict. It was divine. Food's affordable, Service was great, ambience was amazing and the food, divine. We had to come back the next day before our flight back. This time round having the pistachio pancakes AGAIN and trying something new - their horiatiki salad. It was amazing as well. Also can I just say they have one of the best coffees that Edinburgh has to offer? Most coffee I've had tasted like sewage water but their coffees here just made me knew I'm gonna have a good day. Impeccable service too, waitresses and the chefs were amazing. I don't give much google reviews but this place.. chefs kiss. All in all an awesome place please do check it out!

It’s the gem of Edinburgh. I had a dinner a few months ago when they first started doing dinner menu and it was AMAZING! All the dishes was phenomenal and in generous size. The haddock soup was a surprise so creamy and rich in flavor. The octopus is one of the BEST I’ve had. The chimichurri sauce matched perfectly with the turkey wings. And the poached pear dessert was refreshing. The service was great too. Just loved everything here. We even got a parfait as a gift. Been here for brunch thousands of times and dinner turns out to be as nice as the pancakes! It’s been 3 months since my last visit, I tried different restaurants in the city and it’s still the most satisfying dinner I’ve had. I have to go back here again soon.

My son had specially booked a table for 5 of us today as I was down visiting from Inverness. We arrived at the booking time of 1230 to be told that there were still people at our table. We were told it could be another 10 minutes, then 15 minutes or 20 minutes ~ despite the fact it had been pre- booked for 1230. Staff were not even willing to inform the people at our table that we were waiting as had previously booked. We were just told that other bookings that had ran over earlier had had an effect on our booking. Very disappointed, as we didn't even get over the door. Thankfully the pancake place Stacs nearby was able to accommodate us all at such notice.

I went here with a good friend and the food was fantastic. The yoghurt bowls are wonderful and the baps are good too. Although, they’re rolls… not baps. Drinks were lovely too… although, my only problem: A DIY hot chocolate for £5.50 is a bit ridiculous. Giving us a whisky and chocolate beans and getting to do it ourselves, is a bit of a gimmick. I don’t book to go out to make my own drinks, I’ve done my time in hospitality making hot chocolates… that’s my only complaint! Again, food and service were fantastic! It’s a lovely little cozy spot for a nice brunch! Great date spot! Will certainly be back.

It’s my 2nd time dining here for breakfast the first experience was good thats why I came back for 2nd time but today I was very disappointed. They took 45mins to serve my order and I only ordered shakshuka. When i got my shakshuka i was already starving and my fried egg was over cooked not runny so I asked politely if they could re-do my eggs and they took 10 mins to redo my food and when I got them back instead of one egg they gave me 2 eggs so now im confused how many is it originally for an order? I was really hungry and very disappointed because the shakshuka itself wasn’t even that good i was so upset i just paid and didn’t even ate 1/4 of it. I understand that they were busy at that time but I hope they don’t do the same mistake again because its really frustrating especially when you’re paying 12.50£ or maybe just dont order the shakshuka

I don’t understand the good reviews. Even before you have a seat you can notice how dirty the place is (kitchen included), not to say disgusting. The smoked salmon is probably the cheapest you can find with plenty of fat line (the hard, dark brown part), the bread is awful, not even toasted. Forget the free range eggs too. Food cooked just right with plenty of flavour. Well presented coffee, it is a mocha which you can see from photos. Personally not the biggest fan of the mocha but it was nice to try. I'm usually used to a sweeter mocha, this one was pleasantly dark and bitter. Maybe this is what a proper mocha is supposed to be rather than the sugar filled artificial ones I'm used to. Warm service and atmosphere. Well worth a visit for some brunch.

Absolutely disgusted by the attitude of the front counter lady. We arrived without a booking and had mentally prepared for the possibility of being turned away or having to wait for a long time. There were two groups ahead of us - she greeted them and told them they would get a table in 10 minutes. She completely ignored us (first red flag). After I made eye contact with her, she curtly told us she didn’t have a table available in a frustrating manner (second red flag) and then walked away. With no clear information given, we assumed we could queue for our turn. Five minutes later, she noticed we were still in line behind the two groups and shouted at us, asking why we were still there since she had already told us there was no table. We explained that we didn’t mind waiting, but her response was appalling: 'I don’t have a table for you, do you want to wait for 1.5 hours?' We understand it’s a busy café, but she could have politely informed us about the 1.5-hour wait time instead of shouting. After reading past reviews, I realized we weren’t the only ones who had this kind of experience. We were initially drawn to this brunch café by its positive food reviews, but the treatment we received was horrendous. They have absolutely no interest in customer service, and the first impression was terrible. I’m glad we didn’t spend a penny supporting a business like this.

Sorry for leaving a so-so review but the day we were there it was chaotic, they were constantly forgetting about our order, cutlery, they even left out basic ingredients from the recipe, we only ordered a toast and a set of pancakes with coffee and it took more than one hour to have everything, at the end one waitress asked us to leave since we had been there for one hour but that wasn’t our choice. Here’s a more polished, light-hearted version of your review: My wife, baby daughter, and I popped in for brunch last week after the pictures of their pancakes caught my attention (I mean, who can resist pancakes?). The café is a bit tucked away downstairs, which meant we had to navigate some steps with our buggy, but we managed and were lucky to snag a table without a reservation. First impression? There was a little leak dripping into a container – charmingly quirky, though it did make me wonder if we’d time-traveled to 2003 when the place first opened. It definitely has a “no rush to modernize” vibe, but honestly, I kind of liked the vintage charm. The open kitchen behind the counter lets you peek in on the chefs at work, which is always fun. We squeezed in with the buggy—note for fellow parents, it’s not the most buggy/wheelchair-friendly, but we made it work, and the staff were really accommodating. Speaking of the staff, our server was an absolute star—seriously, five-star service. She was bright, cheerful, full of jokes, and really knew the menu. She gave us the kind of detailed recommendations you don’t often get, and I respect that. Her energy definitely added to the experience. The menu itself is awesome—small enough to not be overwhelming, but with plenty of variety. Classics alongside some unique twists. We started with drinks, choosing between three kinds of hot chocolate. We went with a Belgian and an Italian one, though I can’t remember which was which. One of them came as a fun DIY kit with hot milk, chocolate buttons, and a hand mixer, which was a nice touch. Both tasted great! Then we spotted another table with cannoli, which weren’t on the menu, so naturally, we had to order some. Unconventional starter? Yes. Delicious? Also yes, especially with the cream they served alongside them. For mains, my wife ordered the Scotsman breakfast. She asked for no mushrooms and tomatoes, but when the plate arrived, it had both. Oops! A few minutes later, the chef came rushing out, realizing he’d sent the dish to the wrong table. Luckily, my wife hadn’t started eating, and the rightful owner of the breakfast was happy to take it. When hers finally arrived as ordered, she was pleased—it was one of the better breakfasts she’s had in Edinburgh. Whether it was worth the £14.50 is up for debate, but she did enjoy every bite. I got a bit greedy and ordered two dishes: the strawberry and pistachio pancakes and the truffled mushroom. The pancakes? Phenomenal. Thick, with a rich pistachio flavor, balanced by the sweetness of the strawberries. So good, in fact, I probably didn’t need to order anything else… but of course, I did. The truffled mushroom was supposed to be a “small plate,” but it arrived looking like a full meal. While I initially enjoyed it, the mushroom flavor became a bit overwhelming by the end. I did my best but had to tap out before finishing. Despite our main server being an absolute gem (seriously, best waitress we’ve had in a while), we did notice some of the other staff weren’t as professional. Chefs were walking through the dining area and bickering a couple of times, which wasn’t ideal. I get that kitchens are stressful, but maybe save the arguments for the back! In summary, we had some top-tier moments and a few hiccups, but overall, we enjoyed our visit. The pancakes may have been the most expensive I’ve ever had, but I savored every bite. And to the amazing waitress (sorry, didn’t catch your name)—you deserve a pay raise!

Feeling so honored and excited to try the new 5-course tasting menu at Tani Modi. I’ve had brunch here so many times before and have always been amazed by the quality and incredible flavors of the food, but the dinner menu takes it to an even higher level. The surprise dinner started with toasted rosemary focaccia and honey-infused butter, a unique combination of crispy, salty flavors with a hint of sweetness. This was followed by a one-of-a-kind parma ham cannoli with a ricotta filling, topped with sun-dried tomatoes, watercress sauce, and toasted sourdough. I was blown away by the surprising combination of creamy, tender inside and crispy, flavorful textures. Next came the deep-fried oyster mushrooms, which reminded me of Japanese tempura but with a more exotic twist—chili-infused coating and a fresh spring onion flavor. The dipping sauce was also unique, not your typical soy sauce, but something wonderfully aromatic and hard to describe, yet absolutely delicious. The fried seabass with beans and peppers was another highlight. The seabass had crispy skin with an extremely tender inside, and the beans were so soft they practically melted in my mouth. Then, there was turkey with broccolini—a traditional dish from the chef's hometown in Nigeria, creatively fused with Argentine chimichurri sauce. This dish was incredibly flavorful and fulfilling, with such a unique aroma that words can’t fully capture its deliciousness. The amazing dinner concluded with a dessert of pear, oat crumble, and cinnamon-infused foam. This instantly gave me cozy vibes, reminding me of sitting by a fireplace in winter, and made me think of the upcoming Christmas season and mulled wine. The oatcake was slightly 'burnt' on top, with a cinnamon flavor that felt like autumn in every bite—a party in my mouth, while also feeling like a warm hug on a cozy night. The tasting menu was absolutely incredible, and I would say very filling. Each dish showed the creativity and ingenuity of the chef and his team, and every course was a pleasant and inspiring surprise. It warmed both my stomach and my heart during the stormy days. I will definitely be coming back for more surprises!

From the moment we stepped into the restaurant, Sara and her colleagues greeted us with warm smiles and exceptional attentiveness. They thoughtfully provided a basket of toys for our toddler, bringing giggles and games to our dining experience. Service was prompt, with food and drinks arriving swiftly. The kitchen was also accommodating, allowing us to tailor our dishes to our preferences. The service was impeccable and the food delightful. We highly recommend this restaurant for an enjoyable dining experience.

I just had the most fantastic avocado salad - (generous sliced whole avocado and crushed mousse, fresh greens, tomatoes, seeds and a delicious dressing) and sensational hummus for lunch here. The hummus is about the best I have ever eaten and I should have bought some to take away. It is also incredibly good value. Why have a never discovered this wonderful place before? The menu has some wonderful items with pancakes, eggs and a general brunch feel and I will make a point of trying them on subsequent visits. The theme is situated around Rimini - thus Italian with a nod in the direction of the middle East and the service so friendly and welcoming that I felt I had dropped in on a friend. I also wish I had ordered a coffee, as it looks sensational.

We found this place by accident, but oh my goodness, this is now a MUST every time we come to Edinburgh! I had the eggs benedict and I thought that was divine.......until the pancakes arrived!!!! Best pancakes, and I do not say that lightly! Truly a little gem 🙂

This little cafe down the stairs was welcoming. Staff were friendly and engaging. Nothing too much trouble. Great black coffee with the best crema. Delicious. Poached eggs were spot on.

What a lovely place! The food was delicious, would recommend the octopus for anyone who is into seafood. Also couldn’t resist getting the full Scottish breakfast and elderflower lemonade #3rdtrimesterhunger 😅 the staff were so sweet and the owner lovely and even came to have a chat with us. Definitely recommend!

Seriously the best breakfast I have had. Quality ingredients and fabulous haggis and black pudding. Huge portion but I had to finish every last morsel. Toilets were lovely too!

Always come here when in edinburgh but unfortunately attended yesterday and sorry won’t be rushing back. An order of avocado on toast with poached eggs (eggs over poached not runny and a scraping of avocado) and a morning roll took 45-50 minutes to arrive (separately). The food and service not up to usual standards we have always enjoyed.

Great food and staff that are rightly proud of their restaurant! Have been twice with my toddler now and as there are many more dishes to try, we will definitely be back again! Lovely little gem of a place I never even knew existed until 2 months ago.. don't make my mistake and just walk past it for years, go now!

Had a tasty breakfast at Tani Modi Brunch House on Hanover St in Edinburgh! The chef even apologized for the delay of my meal because she felt like her perfectly poached eggs were taking too long to cook! Everything was perfection and her passion shone through. Bless her!

Its a great spot, we almost missed it, cos it’s literally a small signpost. But soo glad we didn’t. Staff were nice and friendly. Its a chill cosy place. The food was sooo good, like it was just soo good. I had the Scottish breakfast and pistachio pancakes. My sis had “shakshouka” which was recommended. Food arrived promptly enough. We relished every single bite. The owner came out to say hi. It was generally a nice welcome to Edinburgh. I would definitely be back there for lunch soon.

If you're in the Leith area this place is definitely worth travelling to. Great service and great food. I would also go out of my way to go here just for the coffee. I'm a big meat eater so I was a bit hesitant when I saw the menu. I got the jalapeño popper + nduja and I was blown away. Side note: also had a lovely glass of white wine and I thought the wine glass it was served in was elegant and well thought out for the style of venue.

First visit here a few weeks ago and it’s as lovely inside as the restaurant is from the outside. The staff were so friendly, the food was delicious and they do a real good Aperol spritz! I particularly loved how every table was spaced out so whilst the place was full and buzzing, you weren’t sat on top of each other. I’d definitely recommend and will definitely be back ✨

Excellent food and generous servings. Professional and friendly service. Relaxed atmosphere, not pretentious despite good standards. It wasn’t a pb to get dairy free alternative. The wine was excellent too. Will go back for sure. If it wasn’t so pricey (although worth every penny), we would be there every week.
