Tango Turtle - Caribbean inspired restaurant in Aberdeen City

The word inspiration equals impunity because the food has nothing Jamaican about it, the prices are astronomical and the portions are ridiculously small (4 slices of banana £4.50) which doesn't even make 1 full banana ridiculous🙄. The Jerk sauce is yellow (I've never seen one like that). The flavor isn't there which is an insult to Jamaican cuisine. Now I don't know if this is due to there being no Jamaicans in the kitchen or if it was adapted for the Scottish palate 🤷🏾‍ ♀️

We were a table of 7, but as we were the only ones there 1.30 hours wait was unbelievably too long to wait for our food. Everyone bar me enjoyed our food I think I was the unlucky one, I couldn’t eat mine as it was far too spicy for me but the plantains were amazing. Everyone else wolfed their food down as it was nice but everyone was starved after such a long wait. We were charged £38 for corking our byob and for the use of our glasses- which was a ridiculous price. The guy who served us was lovely but seemed out of his depth.

Great Caribbean-inspired food in a gem of a spot, this is well worth checking out. The menu isn't incredibly large, but I personally believe that means that what they do must be good. Food is cooked fresh, the service is friendly, and the portions are certainly enough to leave you full by the end. I've been a few times now, and each time I've left satisfied. Quite quiet too, which is a surprise - think it could pick up!

Diré que estaba más que decepcionado con toda esta experiencia. Tardó 70 minutos en salir nuestro aperitivo. ¿Por qué? Podría contar a los clientes con mis 10 dedos en cualquier momento. Nos habríamos ido, pero estábamos tan jet lag cuando llegamos. Fue tan malo que un grupo de gente en la mesa de al lado comenzó el "queremos comida" cantar (bastante apropiado y divertido) Pequeñas porciones, pero lo entiendo. Después de otros 35 minutos recibimos nuestro plato que no era sabroso en absoluto. Podría haber tratado con eso pero después de declarar en la página web que aceptan tarjetas cuando queríamos pagar las únicas opciones eran efectivo o hacer una transferencia a su cuenta bancaria... ¡QUÉ! Se podía decir claramente que éramos turistas, realmente deberían habernos dicho al principio que su máquina de tarjetas no estaba funcionando ese día. Así que como no podíamos cumplir con sus opciones nos pidió que fuéramos a un cajero automático y pagáramos. El pateador, pero enviará a uno de sus trabajadores con nosotros para nuestra protección. Señor Pleeeeese no me condescienda. Queremos pagar por lo que comimos así que vamos. El trabajador que iba con nosotros quería que fuéramos a la tienda de enfrente del cajero a hacer cambio porque no tenía ningún cambio que darnos ¿Estás loco? Mi amigo básicamente dijo: "¡Ve a hacer el cambio y desperdicia tu dinero!" Y eso es exactamente lo que hizo. Larga historia Larga No recomendaría este lugar a nadie en absoluto que valora su tiempo o dinero!

Me encantaba este lugar. Fuimos a tomar un bocado temprano un sábado por la noche. La habitación estaba medio vacía, pero todavía esperamos 40 minutos para obtener nuestra orden tomada. Pedimos 5 platos pequeños para compartir. 3 de ellos llegaron después de una hora, y pensamos que los otros 2 platos seguirían. Vinieron 30 minutos después, sin que el personal nos dijera que tomaría un tiempo. La comida no era como solía ser: definitivamente se recalentó, las porciones eran pequeñas... Hemos hecho saber al personal que estábamos decepcionados, a lo que ellos respondieron “Nosotros también estábamos decepcionados, demasiada gente vino a comer aquí esta noche”. ¿Entonces por qué recibir más gente? Dijeron que no había nada que pudieran hacer con nuestra factura, ya que ningún gerente estaba en el lugar. Después de regatear por un tiempo, obtuvimos un pequeño descuento. Honestamente fue un dolor. Algunas otras mesas tuvieron que salir antes de conseguir sus alimentos después de esperar durante horas. La falta de reacción, comunicación y comprensión del personal fue simplemente impactante. No volveré.

If you like hearty, spicy caribbean food, you're in the right place. The selection of drinks ist a bit scarce though.

We booked the table at the restaurant for evening meal with a 6yr old. The food was okay but the place was freezing the whole time. I do understand that price of electricity is very high but honestly we were sitting in our big jackets to eat our food. My little one didn't want to move as he said he is frozen.

The environment is decorated with a Bob Marley theme and although the menu is also Caribbean, the place is run by Indians. We were the only ones eating there and at first it didn't give a good impression, but the food was very good, especially the callaloo, and the dishes were plentiful. I also recommend the ginger beer. The desserts, however, are packaged and frozen, not of great quality. Service was friendly but a little lacking.

Turned up on Saturday for our confirmed lunchtime booking to the place being closed. Poor show.

Took me straight back to Trinidad! I had the buss up taco, superb, the doubles are highly recommended and were just as good as Tobago Dave’s from maracas beach, the aloo dumplings were incredible, jerk wings were healthy big and just right spice, I managed to polish off the remnants of my daughters lamb too which was incredibly flavoursome. This place is bussin! Come rest your heavy load and eat with your neighbour. 10/10

Was excited to try this place. Food was flavoursome however, the take away order I collected, the 2 chicken pots were half empty, and then the oxtail pot didn’t have any oxtail, just veg and bones. A recommendation would be to fill the pot and not be half empty and then to have meat, since the meat dish was purchased. For £45 was too much to have gotten that. If they improve it would be okay, but unfortunately was disappointed, sadly. Hope that you take this on board.

The food was absolutely fantastic! It was quite busy when we arrived but it was really worth the wait to eat such amazing food. The female member of staff was doing such a brilliant job considering she was on her own and it was crazy busy. All in all a great evening with great food and lovely service. Can't review the food as never got any. Arrived on a Friday, bottles in hand (it's BYOB), waited 30 minutes, no attention or menu. Went to find someone, couldn't, left after another 10 minutes. This place has such potential as I've heard food is amazing but maybe only go when you have a good book with you or a Netflix series to binge as you could be waiting a long time. Also, take a cardigan or blanket as it's cold.

Came to Aberdeen for a trip away, you don't think of Aberdeen for jerk chicken but honestly it was intense, so so good. My partner got the lamb curry and was blown away as well. Gutted we live so far away or we'd be there all the time.

We had an early booking so when we first arrived there were no other customers, no music and the lights were off so I was a bit concerned. The staff couldn't be more friendly and accommodating though and brightened the place up and put the music on immediately. So friendly. The food was absolutely delicious. I loved every mouthful and the fact we could bring our own wine was great. I can't wait to go back.

Great value for money with traditional Caribbean cooking and the take your own bottle with a small corkage charge is inspired. Good vibe and music playing, but lighting is slightly harsh and would create a more intimate feel by popping to B&Q for a dimmer switch. Food ranks as a top scorer for me and a hidden gem in the heart of the city.

First time eating here today and we couldn't be more happy with our experience. The portions are massive and fairly priced. The two boys running the op, Gervin and Gavin, were spot on. Gervin was very friendly and made us feel at home. Genuinely a delight. Highly recommend the jerk chicken and curried goat!

Jerk Chicken Wrapito looked nothing like the ones served to other customers. It was clearly microwaved as was very soggy and tasteless and I heard the ping of the microwave. Not what I would expect when I am paying nearly £25 for a main side and a soft drink. Staff seemed annoyed that i was even in the place even though I was the only customer in on a Saturday night....

I have ordered from deliveroo twice where they are accepting orders without any drivers available and keeping the money. Beware

Amazing food but took 1hr to get the food. Place was heaving with drunk folk which didnt help but the food which came eventually made up for it.

Difficult to know where to start with this review tbh, not sure if we walked in on the end of the restaurant or just a terrible night. Restaurant was empty at 745pm bar a table of 2, zero atmosphere. Young man front of house was pleasant but didn't appear to know the menu, didn't bring wine glasses and didn't even bring plates when the sharing food came out. Having to go and ask for plates in a restaurant was a first. Honestly don't know if he'd ever worked in a restaurant before but he desperately needs trained. Staying off his phone and attending to the diners would be a good start. We felt like we'd intruded on the staff's night off. Ordered the sharing platter at £45....a plate of meat with a dollop of coleslaw and a tiny bowl of chips. The meat was seasoned well and tasty but I expected a lot more from a sharing platter. The curry bowl was very good. Not given the chance to order dessert. When I asked the FoH why the evening was so shambolic he told me the owners had covid and they were doing their best. Hopefully this is a one off as I've enjoyed it before, but I found myself having to apologise to our guests for the experience.

Food was first class. No problem there but a very very long wait and the restaurant was cold. Waiting staff were friendly and apologetic cant fault them or the amazing tastes.

Firstly the food is first class. My tastebuds were dancing. Starters and mains both excellent. This was no problem at all. The problem was the horrendous wait (50mins) for our starters to arrive then a further 15mins after we had finished those for the mains. not large dishes either. The staff were kind and apologetic i could not fault them at all i think they were short staffed in the kitchen. i dont mind this but please inform me as we sit down that you are running behind and there is a bit of a wait instead of us just left to wonder when we gonna eat. It was also very cold. I have never eaten in a restaurant with my jacket on but here my wife and i both had to keep our winter coat's on it was so cold. please turn up the thermostat a little to keep patrons comfortable.

The food was great! The Bajan fish cakes are fab. The sauce with prawns was really good too. The Calypso Big Mixed Grill was delicious - especially the ribs! Tasty! The service was good - a very friendly waiter. We maybe we’re kept waiting a bit and pity there was no alcohol available but ultimately these didn’t ruin a really good meal. Good music there too. Good vibe as well.

Food was all amazing very generous portions and reasonably priced. Staff so polite and helpful will definitely be back.

What can I say, from the wonderful atmosphere and the gentle beats easing us into a fantastic dining experience. Food was cooked to perfection with a range of spices and flavours tailored to each meat and fish expertly. If you're a fan of Carribbean food then this place should fast become a consistent choice for a night in or out as they do offer food on just eat. The meat platter was a delightfully large and well prepared meal, two companions at our table shared it and now leave as deep and compassionate friends. Great place. Great food. Great vibes. Would come again for sure (when I'm next in Aberdeen). The star of the show was the callaloo which was a smash hit with two at our table, I partook in the beachboy salad which left me more than satiated and with a range of spices and sweetness, it was outstanding. Overall our table was given sizable portions so be sure you're ready for the meal ahead 😊 Additional note: my friend really wanted the lamb with her starter and they graciously allowed her to change the meat type with the base meal to lamb. Great service.

Before heading to the cinema, we booked a table at Tango Turtle. I ordered the "Plantain & Halloumi Burger". Carol couldn't decide so ordered a couple of the small street snacks. The "Aloo Pie", "Creamy Jerk Spiced Mushroom" and a side of "Loaded Cheese Fries". We don’t usually follow up with a sweet, but we had to. I ordered the "Bounty Patty Parcels with Rum Caramel". Carol went for the "Coconut Panacotta with Berry Compote". OMG! Every dish was amazing. It is hard to eat when you are smiling so much. We are already studying the menu for our next visit.

Simply one of the best meals we've ever had. Food was outrageously good, service excellent and prices are great. Can't recommend the food enough, just delicious.

Four of us ate here at the weekend past. Not our first time. One again from the Trini Doubles with chicken curry, the creamy jerk spiced mushrooms shared starters to four great main courses. I won't describe them all but suffice to say my 'one bowl' Jamaican oxtail stew pot was absolutely delicious, the beef fell off the bone the rich, spiced to perfection, generous sauce was fantastic, the rice and peas and accompanying bread was equally good. The tastiest plate of food out I have had in a long time. The only bits that saw the kitchen again were the bones. Staff are really friendly. A restaurant certainly worth a visit. It does not sell alcohol but you can byob.

So glad we chose to visit Tango Turtle on a friend's recombination, they were right, it's fantastic! Beef curried pot, chicken callaloo, fried plantain... all so tasty, and Bounty patty with rum caramel for the win. 10/10

Very tasty and cheap food. No alcohol beverages available but the non alcoholic ones are good. We had food at a Wednesday during summer and it was not crowded at all.

Delicious food, freshly prepared. Great staff, great music. Wish there was one in Edinburgh. Definitely be back, next we are in Aberdeen.

Found by accident and so glad we did. We wanted a quick lunch and ordered from the small plates and street food section. Not disappointed food was delicious and not overly expensive. Definitely be back. Nothing to complain about decor, music and staff were all really good.

Low key and not obvious from the street but definitely worth looking for. Up one flight of stairs and opens out into a funky themed restaurant that is casual and relaxed. Met by friendly staff and presented with an extensive menu of Caribbean inspired dishes. When the food arrived it was excellent, full of flavour and character. For a Saturday night the place was quiet, which is a real shame. This is a bit of an undiscovered gem.

My partner and I had a wonderful meal at Tango Turtle. The food was delicious and exciting. The ambience had a fun vibe, and the service was perfect. We ate their vegetarian options. The Beachboy salad was incredible, and the panne cotta was rich and beautifully balanced.

Excellent service, incredible food. We ordered the fish fry and a plantain and halloumi burger. Both were well cooked and seasoned. The fish fry in particular was expertly made, with thin, flavorful breading and perfectly cooked fish. The jerk seasoning used in the fries and other elements of the meal managed to be flavorful without being particularly spicy, which I wouldn't have minded but definitely made it better suited to the group we were with.

Nice food, nice music, nice vibe, friendly staff, decent pricing... What let's it down is getting home smelling like you've worked a shift in a chipper.

We really enjoyed our meal here. I had okra and peas with rice. (Vegan choice) husband had the oxtail stew. Both excellent. Good service, nice surroundings, had a chat with some other diners, was a general good vibe place to eat, would return.

Stumbled across after a day of shopping about 5pm, nice and quite for a Saturday Very friendly staff and great menus, loved the Callaloo very tasty and full of flavour. So much amazing choice. Was a great meal. Make the effort and climb those stairs!

Really great Jerk. Wonderfully succulent whole jerk chicken. The rice and peas had an excellent genuine smoky flavour to and was the best I’ve had.

We went here as a group of 4 after a gig, it was late on Sunday night so we were the only ones there. I ordered the Oxtail stew, its was delicious and if I lived in Aberdeen I’d be ordering this easily once a month. The meat fell of the bone, excellent seasoning and good portion of meat (the left overs were swiftly demolished by boyfriend). The rice was light and well seasoned and the sauce had a great depth of flavour. Ordered the plantain side dish, also really moreish but maybe a little more in terms of size and portion would have been good. The waitress was knowledgeable of the menu and was prompt with service and making sure our drinks were toped up. I will go here again when I'm next in Aberdeen.

Schön authentisch eingerichteter Laden mit angenehmer Hintergrundmusik und Ausblick aus dem ersten Stock. Das Servicepersonal war freundlich. Geschmacklich waren die karibischen Gerichte sehr gut, vieles war mir davor gar nicht bekannt. Vor allem das Jerk Chicken ist ausgezeichnet. Beim Burger war das Beef Patty jedoch absolut tot. Schade. Insgesamt auch etwas zu teuer. Dennoch auf jeden Fall zu empfehlen wenn man mal eine etwas andere Küche probieren möchte.

Really enjoyed my first experience of Carribbean food. Friendly service, funky venue, great food. What else do you need. No alcohol sold but you can bring your own and pay a corkage.

Ok. So this was our first time here. Positives: The staff is extremely nice and made us feel welcome even though we just walked in on a Saturday evening without booking. She found us a table very quickly. The food is amazing! We had chicken and ribs. Finally a place, where the food tastes different in the best way! The place itself is clean, bright and friendly. There was only one negative thing. Maybe two, but that will not hold us back from returning in the future! Some wall arts really didn't work with the Caribbean theme. And neither did the music. We were somehow disappointed not hearing Caribbean music, but some weird jazzy something. But hey! Everything else was AMAZING!

Nice, authentic Carribean food.

Nice ambience with good food is perfect. I ordered jerk beef and oxtail stew, and the taste were really good.

The place was nice and staff friendly. It is also a BYOB. We started with the chicken wings and Taco. The Taco was nice with a small filling. The chicken wings were pre cooked and reheated. The chicken was stilled chilled in the centre, but the sauce was quite good. Main course I had the Guyana fried seafood in spices with a mayo dip. It was deep fried and was nice enough. Got bored half-way through eaten it. It might of been more appealing visually and given it another fresher taste if it came with some veg or salad. So just a plate of fried food. Partner had the lamb Callaloo, the rice and beans were tasty, curry was more like a stew. Lacked flavour. All in all nice place, nice staff underwhelming food.

Right let's be positive here.... first The food was great taco nachos and jerk wings for starters all were good, taco very good... The mains, West Indian beef and lamb pot..... They were both great but the lamb was truly exceptional, and I don't say that lightly. Didn't have dessert as we didn't want the taste to go lol. As for service, we have to be honest, could have been better, slow to order even drinks but polite enough, there was only one other person who came in as we were leaving so atmosphere was a bit of a let down but it was Tuesday? No license which is a little odd nowadays but you can take your own in for corkage. We will def go again as we would have sat in the corridor to eat the food, it is different, exceptional, and just needs everything else to keep up with it. The place needs more support and any foodie will not be disappointed. Lamb pot for ever... But goat mmmm now there's a thought

I spotted the restaurant a year ago when we were at cup downstairs was keen to try. It didn't have many reviews then. Finally managed to get to the restaurant. Very nice atmosphere and music. Nice staff and service was on time. We had the nachos, buss up chicken and lamb, chickpea callaloo, jerk burger, carribean fish and chips and the lamb pot. Clean plates for all of us. Very delicious food and great portions. Only thing I didn't agree with was the £5 per bottle of wine for corkage and £1.80 per bottle of beer/lager. But would definitely go back just for the food.

Plantain halloumi burger was amazing and the desserts were delicious :)) Defo worth the price for a meal out!
