Taj Restaurant in Merthyr Tydfil

We've dined at the Taj restaurant twice in the last few months, and each time, the food has been absolutely delicious with an extensive menu offering a great variety of dishes. The decor is inviting and stylish, and the overall ambiance is lovely. However, the service speed could use improvement, as we've waited nearly an hour and a half on both visits before receiving our main courses. During our recent visit, we were there for around three hours, and we noticed that the table next to us had dirty plates and leftover food from previous guests that remained uncleared for a concerning amount of time. The staff didn't seem to prioritise addressing this. That said, the quality of the food is undeniable, and the prices are quite reasonable. The staff are friendly, and the restaurant has great potential. With just a bit more attention to detail in service and cleanliness, it could truly stand out as an exceptional dining experience.

The staff is always welcoming, and the service is quick, whether you're dining in or ordering for takeaway. It’s my go-to spot for Indian food in Merthyr Tydfil, and I highly recommend it to anyone who loves great Indian cuisine!

Popped in here as I was staying in the central area. The food was good and tasty but I did not like the accompanying dips that came with the pappadoms. Would go again but not have pappadoms unless they go back to the traditional 3 dips.

Well where do I start....dident expect much little indian on the high street....wow what a pleasant suprise .... The popodom accompaniments were great...they had a coconut powder thing....did it work.. Had Lamb kebab starter best ever...please take in to account I'm from London eat a curry once a week so think I can make a fair judgment.... main was as good had a dish never had before...that's how I rool 10/10 . Staff were great...attentive and liked the guy called everyone boss.... if in Merthyr Tydfil or Wales it's a must for a Ruby......well done....

Came across this Indian restaurant on our way back to Cardiff from Hay-on-Wye, it’s surprisingly good. We had poppadoms and lamb tikki for starters, followed by Balti curry fish, tandoori chicken, Chickenpaal sauce with lamb and butter chicken. Every single one of them was super mouthwatering and we could taste different layers of flavours in each dish *\(^o^)/* Most dishes came with naan and in a generous portion, but we added an extra garlic naan just in case. Plus, they all arrived steamingly hot. Literally. Service was excellent, friendly and attentive staff. Great experience, the three of us left with a happy belly :)

I recently had the pleasure of dining at Taj Restaurant, and their Lamb Tikka is nothing short of exceptional! The lamb was tender, perfectly marinated, and bursting with flavour. If you're a fan of lamb dishes, you must try the Lamb Tikka at Taj Restaurant. Highly recommended!

Very slow service (took 1.5h to arrive) and food was not good at all, chicken was cold, no flavour and the naan was extremely dry. Best thing was the poppadom which I dare say their got from the local Aldi

Rang at the last minute for a table for 11 sorted us out no problem, great service & food was very tasty & reasonably priced. Lamb tikka jalfrezi was very good. Would definitely use again.

Excellent food, great atmosphere and amazing staff. The 5 of us had a great night and enjoyed every second of it.

Unfortunately both service and food were very poor. Took 40 minutes to get a bottle of beer served. 1.20hr to get starters of which mine was inedible. When mains arrived four of our eight dishes were tasteless, and although different meals all looked and seemed to taste the same, of nothing. There was one other table in the restaurant so it was not busy.

First time trying today. Great food and great service. Very reasonably priced and will definitely be returning.

Been going to this family run restaurant for most of my life, for years my nan and Grampa been going and has taken all the grandchildren and now we've all grown up and we now take our own children here. Food is always lovely and fresh, ahseek and Ahad can't do enough to make your experience a good one. Love coming here.

Took my family for a meal here there were ten of us in total including two infants under two, We took advantage of their banquet offer which represents excellent value and much better than the old buffet system as dishes arrive plated and freshly cooked to order, food was hot tasty and portions were sensibly sized, The staff were attentive without being intrusive and the overall dining experience was informal but very pleasant. The banquet nights represent very good value and an opportunity to sample a variety of dishes. Highly recommended will be returning again soon.

Have been using the Taj for years. Often frequenting to dine in or have a takeaway most weekends but have to admit not so for a few months due to personal reasons. Never ever had a problem either eating in or takeaway. Decided to order tonight, £37, popadoms and chutneys. 2 curries, 2 breads and the rice and chips. I’ve heard of shrink-flation but have to say seems all companies at it. The price had gone up roughly by about £5 (we expected that)..what we didn’t expect was third filled pots of chutneys apart from the onion salad. Keema naan was filled in one corner. A slither of mince. I understand prices have gone up, but ripping customers off means you end up losing customers. As nice as the curry was, we won’t be eating anymore. Costing more, getting less!! Thanks but NO thanks

One of the worst Indian food I’ve ever had. TV dinners are of better quality. Both chicken and paneer was overcooked and hard as rock. Rice was mushy. Tikka masala was overly sweet and basically just tomato paste. Food took half an hr to 40 min to come out. Pick another place for now. They need some time to sort themselves out.

We got the buffet - paid £28 for two people including a pint of coke for each. Really good food for what we paid for - onion Bhajis were so good and the curry I got was a solid.

Mostly sauce but reasonable prices and the food does tasted great. Cheese naan could've been plain didn't taste like much.

The Vindaloo chicken curry was awful. Its extremely hot ( i usually eat vindaloo, and i knew the spicy level). But this is waaay too hot and wasnt tasty either. The chicken cubes were not well marinated, its obvious that they have simply added precook chicken to the pre-cooked vindaloo curry. I ordered two naan bread it was good and my wife ordered a biriyani and that was also okay.

First time ordering here and went for collection so it was hot. Ordered the chilli massala chicken. Wow! Really nice chicken and the menu had two 🌶 🌶 icons. Definitely deserved as it’s blowing my head off in just the right way. You can tell it’s restaurant quality food and to be honest I thought the price was VERY reasonable compared to most places. If you like it hot you’ll love this place

This is the 1st place I visited in England that was very stingy in serving meat pieces in biryani. Atleast it was spicy a bit. But taste was not anywhere near Indian

Me and my partner went on our first date night in years here last night. Lovely gentleman serving us was very friendly. The restaurant was very pretty and comfortable and the food was excellent will definitely be visiting again soon.

Had set meal for two tonight , unfortunately lacking in meat in the Tikka and korai , try his was nearly all sauce and onions , worse meal we have had from them as regular customers

Absolutely fabulous place to go for a meal ..lovely clean and tidy restaurant ...staff are fantastic the meal we had was excellent the only downfall for us was parking but it was easy sorted and it made for a nice five minute stroll back to the car at least it wasn't raining for a change !

‘Buffet’ is not a buffet. You order from a menu, Dishes are mostly sauce. Owner gives you a hard time when you order again from the buffet ‘menu’ for ‘wasting food’ which is mostly sauce, even though it is supposedly ’all you can eat’. And the food is mediocre at best. Owner is rude, unpleasant and unprofessional

I ordered from Taj for the first time and I am very happy with my order. Man who answered the phone to take my order was absolutely great, real gentleman, and so nice.. My food was fresh and pipping hot. Samosa was yummy crunchy, naan was great and my duck and lamb was… omg! I will order again and again.

Excellent meal. Service was quick and polite. Food arrived hot and timely, meal was very tasty - we ordered a vegetarian bassa and a Biriani to share and there was plenty to eat. Naan was delicious

The truly worst food experience ever dont take my word for it actually go spend the £10 per head at the all you can eat buffet absolutely disgusting poor quality of food only 8 dishes to choose from most of that was vegetarian everything tasted watered down really bland I had to leave a review you must visit to experience how truly awful this buffet is

We have only just moved to merthyr and after using the same Indian takeaway for the past 20 years we were sceptical about trying somewhere new. Omg....I was absolutely blown away. Stunning doesn't even come close to describing the food. The delivery was on time and the food was hot unlike other deliveries we've had. We will definitely be ordering again and again. Went here for buffet night. Absolutely shocking and the food gave me and my partner incredibly bad stomachs.

Oh my word. THE best Indian meal we have had in a very long time. I phoned about vegan options and the staff were so helpful. All vegan food came packed completely seperately. They really went the extra mile for us. Can't wait to go back again.

We had a Taj takeaway tonight after months of not being able to and we realised how much we missed it. Both our meals were absolutely delicious and piping hot. I am a vegan and they are really helpful and accommodating and knowledgeable about ingredients which goes a long way for me. My curry was full of flavour. My boyfriend is a meat eater and he loved his meal too.

Zer0 stars if I can. The worst takeaway I've ever had. 1 hour late after waiting the usual 60 mins. Delivery driver when to the wrong town (why take the post code if you are going to type the street name in to the satnav? Im lucky i dont live on high street) All came in a greasy bag, soggy papadoms, wet naans. Curries tasted like they were staight from the jar. Chips were terrible. Rice dry. The menu they sent has soaked up some grease but not enough. Don't waste your money!! Or your time!

Visited here with my husband and the food was outstanding. Not normally fussed on Indian but this has changed my mind. Will defo be visiting again.

Very nice food and friendly staff. The food was so good that we cleaned up all the plates. Our 4 yo daughter who is a fussy eater cleaned up her plate too. Highly recommend this place if you are in Merthyr.

Popped in for a quick unarranged bite to eat when passing. Had a king prawn pathia which was a few penny's under £10 but only had 6 small prawns in lots of sauce which was disappointing. Also very small portions of chutneys with the poppadums. Staff were really nice .

Merthyr had limited eating options when we visited. This was the only curry house open and we were the only ones inside on a Thursday night! However, food was really good.

Absolutely rubbish, if you are an Indian dont go there. Its not indian food and they dont know how to do even because they from bangladesh. The management is @&@&&£&&
