Fantastic food, fantastic service. By far my favourite Chinese restaurant

Ive been going here 15 years on and off . I cannot fault the food, always very high standard . However where the problem seems to lie in reading most of these reviews and certainly from my own perspective is the manager of this place. He is damn right rude and definitely racist to brown / black people in my opinion . Never gives polite answer and always rude to people he doesn't care much about. If I was the owner and he's reading this review, the one thing I would do is 100 % sack the manager from this place. He is losing you customers. This restaurant would be great again if for that change .

Very poor experience Having been to Tai Pan a couple of years ago when the food was good we were really disappointed with the food and service today The crispy duck was clearly old as it had lost its moisture . When the waitress asked how was everything we told her the duck was dry she totally ignored our comment. The paper chicken was like spring roll and again looked double fried. Only the prawn toast was the redeeming factor. No wonders the restaurant was totally empty!

Dined on Saturday evening Chinese New Year, the atmosphere was lively, the staff friendly & in great spirits for their New Year, the food was delicious especially the roast duck with pancakes which was sublime. Being coming here less frequently in recent years due to moving, however Saturday night showed they still provide an excellent offering, which on point is throughly enjoyable. Would love some new variations on menu. Looking forward to next visit, when next here. With Regards Beni

Wonderful food as per normal and great value for money.

A very good Chinese restaurant with delicious food, attentive service and a great dining experience.

Picked up a takeaway, the manager had already warned us that the scallops were poor so was not a good sign. The salt and pepper ribs were fatty and tastless , the prawn toast was greasy and cold, the battered prawns were disgusting. Sadly the quality that you pay extra for here has gone. The manager said he could not make any changes, Got our money back but we will not return until they improve .....shame....it was the best in the area.

Staff are very friendly. Decoration is traditional and full of old Hong Kong style. Food is great and not pricey.

Had the set for two. Poor value and wouldn’t go for again. Perhaps it would have been better to have ordered individual dishes.

No positive thing to say about this place. My chow mein was extremely dry and tasteless. The people behind the counter kept taking heavy sighs every time I asked the most basic question. This was an hour before closing time but regardless of what time it is, I'm still a paying customer and expect a decent level of service and at least nice tasting food. Was just a lose lose here.

The Tai Pan which we have loved for 30 years is no more. Having lived in the area and spent many occasions here, celebrating birthday, anniversary's and other special occasions it's is sad to see the decline of the Tai Pan. Visited on a Sunday. Used to always be busy with people queuing outsid. Now the tables inside are 3/4 empty. On ordering, the food presented all tastes and looks the same... the sweet and sour, the szechuan. Served on tiny plates, all luke warm. When we asked for the warm plates we are told they are no more. The familiar features I remember have gone. The chop sticks and holder, the attentive friendly service... They just want you in and out.

Love the food but the service was dreadful. Too busy sorting out take aways.

...lovely restaurant with friendly staff ...dined in with the mrs on a saturday evening (we didn't have a reservation but went early so there were plenty of available seats) - the food was good and the staff were happy to swap out various menu items to suit our needs ...we went for the sicuan feast and there was so much food so may not be hungry again for 2 more days :D

Firstly the food is delicious and the customer service is excellent. The staff are so attentive and really care you’re having a good experience. The ambience is traditional but I think that’s what makes it homely and special. Will definitely return.

Amazing oriental restaurant. Used to walk past this place on my way to school over 38 years ago so it is very well established. This was my first time visiting here and brought my wife for a night out and we both enjoyed the experience.

I was really looking forward to eat at the tai pan as the reviews were good, I was very disappointed,I ordered a chicken curry, It was flavourless apart from the couple of slices of chilli and onion ,the sauce was very gloopy ,I didn't find the staff friendly only to Thier regular customers, I definitely would not recommend this place to anyone

We asked for our table to not be by the door or drafts as we both have back issues. We were placed in a back room away from the atmosphere or the restaurant will a very annoying radio playing, we fully expected traditional chinese music. We were close to the toilets which created a draft and when you went to the toilet it was dirty wobbly seats smelly and like walking in a fridge, we paid for our meal and then left. Having said that our first experience 10 years ago was lovely and we will return and see if there are improvements.

I've been here three times, the service is always bad!! They are extremely rude, always rushing, throwing plates and asking if you are finished. They are always negative and never polite. I always tell myself maybe this is because they are busy what's so ever, but is all three times I've been here. Last visit, I was paying by card, there machine was playing and the service was throwing the pdq asking me why is void and pushing my card in and out like crazy, obviously it worked at the end. They need to certainly fixed their attitude!!!! Not happy won't be going again, thanks!

We have been eating at the Tai Pan for over 30 years. The food is always hot and lovely and the service is always great from Alan and the team. The seafood in szechuan peppercorn salt, kam do ribs and beef in black bean are always great.

Gone down hill service was bad one particular dish was so over cooked not edible sent back kitchen/waiter said if you want the same it will be served the same disgusting

An “old fashioned” Chinese restaurant in the sense that the veg is canned and the sauces processed. You can almost taste the MSG. Dining experience marred by takeaway customers crowding the dining area and the manager running around like a headless chicken looking very stressed.

Had a takeaway last night. The plain rice and the pork in special fried noodles tasted rank. We will not be returning

Sweet and Sour pork was not good, not extremely sht but probably the bare minimum Special fried rice is cheap for a reason, it's really bland and lack of flavour and not much wok hei as well Might try other dishes in the future but the first order is not great Reasonable price tho

First, I want to say this is my first experience. My review of the food can be due to me not being fan of Thai food. That being said I have tried sweet sour chicken before and it was not that bad with proper sauce. In Tai Pang the sour sweet chicken tasted like dipping the chicken in a sweet ketchup. The chicken curry would use more cooking so the curry spice can melt in the soup and build better texture. The eat as much as you can instead of the buffet style is not quite comfortable with waiters coming to the table every few minutes to remove finished plates. The place is popular and there must be people who admired the food and service style. However I think there is a room for improvement to make it more popular.

Excellent food, with fresh ingredients. Good service and helpful staff. The sunday buffet is excellent value for money. But make sure you book for the buffet as its normally packed by 2pm. Parking not the easiest but worth the walk. Unfortunately they don't deliver but your welcome to order and collect. Probably the best Chinese restaurant in the area and has been established for many years.

Long standing restaurant but it's lack of space and variable cooking quality let's it down. The eating area tends to fill up with staff and people collecting takeaways so dont get a table near the window or stairs if you want a quiet night out.

Been going here a majority of my life, and it's incredible, best meal is a classic sweet and sour chicken, rice with toffe apple for desert. The service is great and the workers and so nice, especially the owner who's always present making sure it's all great, the atmosphere is very welcoming, go there for a good treat and order the swear/sour!

Arrived back from a trip early afternoon and regular Chinese was closed, so found Tai Pan which was closer and ordered a takeaway, although they have sit down. What a mistake. I have never had white special fried rice in all the decades I have been eating Chinese, there was no seasoning sauce or vegetables. The duck was soggy and the prawn toast oily. The noodles did not have any flavour. I am shocked that the chef could produce that for a customer. Really disappointed and a complete waste of my money. Never again, that will teach me to wait for my regular to open.

Absolutely amazing, been going here for years and went today for my birthday and could not fault it at all. Perfect in every way and the food is top notch

Take away this time - Excellent as always. Food was delicious and hot. Ribs were nice. Curry was lovely. Rice was nice. Chicken balls batter was under cooked. That was only issue. Can't wait to use again.

Lovely food and service and very close to New Eltham station. Food came out very quickly and was tasty. The restaurant really could do with a refurb but this did not deter from the food.

Went today for Sunday Buffett, disappointed as the food used to be so good, everything was cooked in old used oil which made everything taste awful 😞

Had a pleasent set meal and.a bottle of wine. Nothing to rave about, was very busy and staff didn't appear too happy. Would I go there again? Probably, but not to impress anyone.

Visited this lovely restaurant last night with 6 friends for a birthday get together. The food was fantastic. Hot and freshly prepared. Alan was very friendly and helpful, and was happy to change dishes from the set menus without fuss. The prices were unbelievable and great value. Little family run places like this are rare so please call in and say I sent you!

Exceptional food and service. Recommended are sizzling dishes for that spectacular taste and effect. Hor Douvres mixed are fabulous -- chicken satay is superb.

Thought we would try a new restaurant, and how i wish we hadn't. Think caravan site Chinese and then think ten times worse!! Just call it bland fried rice because "SPECIAL" is was it wasn't. Bleached and tasteless. The crispy lamb was dry and over cooked, as was the mixed platter. The duck and chicken dishes were also very poor. Shame, as we were really looking forward to a Saturday night, family lock down treat. P.s. i never write reviews, so you can imagine how bad it was.

Was very disappointed with our take away last night for my birthday. Chicken curry and chicken in black bean sauce was tasteless and crispy chilly beef was so tough we could not eat very chewy. We was Very disappointed as I have been recommended to tai pan. First time I have used and certainly will be the last.

Bro. My mum wanted some veggie rolls and I was gonna order my usual chinese food so when I called I asked for the veggie rolls and then she says "this is a Chinese restaurant" then cuts. Like bro, I didn't even get to order my actual chinese food

Best Chinese in the area, not all standard dishes, quite a few different things to try, I really like the crispy lamb. Great service as always and really fresh, been going here years, can't fault it

Very nice food and good quality

We haven’t visited for over a year but this is still the best Chinese’s Restaurant in the area by a mile. The Crispy Duck starter was superb. We all ordered the sizzling dishes for mains and shared. The beef I ordered was excellent, as was the prawns and lamb. My wife thought the chicken a little bland. Singapore noodles and Calamari were excellent additions. We have already booked our Christmas catch up dinner.

I had a wonderful meal, the service is very good. The saffs are very friendly. It is a good Chinese restaurant.

Myself and my husband with mum and dad have been visiting Tai Pan for probably 30 years..due to current circumstances we have not been since before lockdown. We visited last week and what a fantastic meal. Alan always remembers what we have and along with Eve they really pushed the boat out to look after us. Food is first class and we felt very safe ...They make sure everyone coming into the restaurant follows Government guidelines..We’ll be back again soon.

Heard good things about this place over the years ,but it's changed First time I've been and we was sat in the basement where you had to bend down as the ceiling so low. It was like eating in a store room Waitress chucked plates on table with no interaction . Mixed starter was 1 small spring roll .2 triangles of prawn toast.2 small ribs.and a spoonful of seaweed. We had duck and got 6 pancakes between 8 !!! Mains were better but we won't be going back £150 for 4 I want to eat in the restaurant not the storeroom

The staff seemed confused about our booking and left us standing in the middle of the restaurant, discussing us and generally making us feel uncomfortable. We were only offered the buffet menu. Everything on the menu was fried. The food was very oily, flavourless and offered with jar type sauces. We will not be returning ever!

Good food. Was the fastest sit down restaurant meal I have ever experienced. Done and out the door in under an hour. Seriously rushed. ☹

You bet!!!!! We had the most fantastic meal in this restaurant last night. I had been critical once about too much salt in the food. This had hardly any and was the most delicious meal we had. Alan and the team (Fun, Eva along with the others) all looked after us well. The service was brilliant and I can honestly say that it was worth every penny. Thank you all so much.

Good food great service reasonably priced

No complaints with the food in this place. Friendly staff, welcoming. Atmosphere can be lively, worth a visit if you haven't been and like Chinese food. After all not many Chinese Restaurants where you can sit in around the surrounding area.

I either eat in here, or have a takeaway at least once a month. Very helpful staff. Not a large floor area, but they also have downstairs when it's really busy. Lovely food.

The food is good. My wife doesn't like that they put ham in the special fried rice - it is unusual, but fine for me. They do good sweet and sour chicken. Downside is that they have stopped opening for lunch during the week. Don't get much chance to eat from there now. Also it can be hit and miss on how long it takes for takeaway orders. Some times they make it ready in 10 minutes, some times they tell you it is 45 minute wait - doesn't seem to be anything to do with how busy it is, it baffles me why it takes so long sometimes. Very odd to turn away custom when a competitor is literally across the street.

Mi esposo y yo regresamos a Tai Pan después de una ausencia de 10/12 años (creo que nos sobrecargamos en los años anteriores y nos impresionó menos). Tengo que decir que fue absolutamente encantador hoy, nada que criticar, excelente comida, se sirve caliente y fresco y con muy buen servicio. Volveremos, sigan así por favor!

Habiendo acordado llevar a la familia a China Town para las celebraciones del Año Nuevo Chino, reservamos el Tai Pan como habíamos hecho un par de años antes. Hemos comido en China Town en sí, pero encontramos que hay tantas personas que desean comer, el servicio es un poco apresurado. Afortunadamente para nosotros no fue en el Tai Pan. Visitamos el domingo por la tarde y le informamos que debe reservar, no había un asiento vacío en ninguna parte. Teniendo en cuenta la cantidad de personas, nuestros entrantes y el pato crujiente llegaron a tiempo. Es un poco más caro que otros restaurantes chinos, pero la comida es excelente. Hace un cambio bienvenido a un Sunday Roast.

The people weren’t very welcoming and the food wasn’t very good. It’s decent, but flavours are bland and nobody else was there in the restaurant. Wouldn’t go again unfortunately

I have been going to the Tai Pan since 1995. Really nice place. Food is always tasty. I recommend eating in than getting a takeaway as the meals taste a lot fresher. Staff always friendly and welcoming

full house on a Thursday, lovely setting inside, fabulous service with great banter, food was plentiful and delicious. The food was all about the flavour and quantity. Very happy to have found such a great local Chinese restaurant

Used to be much better. Very expensive now for mediocre quality food. Do not give itemised bill so they can just charge what they like! Anxious to push you out at the end of the evening. Was once the place to go but is now the place to avoid. What a shame.

We tried prawn curries with cashew nuts and loved it! It is one of the oldest restaurants outside china town and it shows in the quality of flavours. Serving size was generous and the staff is very friendly too.

He estado en Tai Pan muchas veces a lo largo de los años y no me puedo quejar de la comida, sin embargo, el servicio siempre es bastante malo, pero la última noche realmente lo superó. Mi novio y yo fuimos a cenar a Tai Pan anoche y no estaba muy ocupado debido a que era un lunes lluvioso por la noche. Esperamos media hora para pedir nuestra comida después de pedir repetidamente a la camarera que venga. Luego trajeron el plato equivocado cuando finalmente llegó a la mesa, pero como estábamos tan hambrientos comimos sin quejarnos. Después de unos 15 minutos de comer, vino la misma camarera (mientras tenía un tenedor en la boca) y me preguntó: "¿Ya terminaste?". Nos sorprendimos tanto que nos levantamos y pedimos la factura, mi socio pagó con su tarjeta de Monzo y ella me preguntó con rudeza si era una tarjeta real. Sinceramente, no podía creer lo grosera que había sido. Es una pena, ya que la comida es excelente, pero definitivamente no volveré.
