Really enjoyed fried Goyza and the sweet and sour, spinach and egg rice and the starter of Chinese lettuce/cabbage. But the pancakes with spring onions were awful - no flavour - just greasy dough - avoid. Takeaway for 2 people £40 - so not a cheap option . But good veggie effort and ambience

Make a reservation ahead of time! This restaurant is always packed and for good reason. The early bird dinner special is definitely where you get the most value for your $$- 21.5£ for an appetizer, main, and pancake. The coconut pancake is divine, as are the dumplings and noodles!

This place completely ignores customer needs and has very concerning hygiene standards. Not only did they put vegetables in my dish that I don’t eat, but they also used their hands to remove them directly from the plate. I ultimately had to cancel my order to catch the train and ended up going hungry for the night.

The dumplings were incredible but be careful you don't burn your mouth. We loved the smoothies and tea available to drink. The service was quick. I had the onion cakes, the potato curry and the spinach and egg fried rice. This was probably the best rice I've ever eaten. Would definitely return if I visit Bristol again

Authentic flavours, very attentive staff, comfortable dining room. Standout dishes include: ° Suyuan guo shui mian 素缘过水面 - Home style noodles served with sauted green beans, shredded cucumber, garlic sauce & peanut butter sauce. ° Xiang jian fu pi juan 香煎腐皮卷 - Pan fried dry bean curd roll filled with carrot, onion, sprouts & mushroom. Interesting drinks menu, particularly the tea selection. Caveat: • The food is often overly salty. • The disharmony between FOH and the kitchen is, unfortunately, often palpable. • FOH could pay more attention to respecting booking times and rotation of bigger tables.

Loved the dishes but the service wasn’t great. Enjoyed having so many vegetarian options to choose from and was very happy with the noodles dumplings and mixed fruit juice/smoothie. I’d consider coming here again for a casual meal during quieter hours, but it’s not great for a special celebration on a Saturday night. Be warned when you order that they just bring the dishes/drinks in a haphazard order when it’s “ready”. So if you’re hoping for a starter to come before your main, you could be disappointed. I was also left over half an hour without any drink despite ordering this first. Eventually I gave up and asked for tap water as I was so thirsty from the salty food and this came 10 mins after our first request (we had to ask 3 times for it). The final straw was when we were nearly finished (but still clearly eating and drinking) and the waiter asked us if we could move from the pleasant window table we occupied to a less desirable middle table to accommodate a large group who’d just arrived. Instead we said we’d prefer to just leave - quickest bill I’ve ever seen arrive in a restaurant, much faster than the drink!

The portions are also pretty big so you don’t have to choose too much and if you want great value for money, they do an early bird offer for £20 (starter + side + main). I had a peach iced tea which was absolutely delicious and the handmade tofu was top notch. However, my main was exceptionally salty which was a real shame. Altogether, a fine experience.

I wouldn't recommend this restaurant to anyone who expected it to be a Chinese Vegetarian Restaurant. In fact, upon visiting, we discovered that it is actually an Indian restaurant. I want to clarify that my intention is not to discriminate against any cuisine; rather, I'm sharing my experience to help others manage their expectations. We decided to try some of the chef's specials and ordered fried rice. Unfortunately, the dishes turned out to be incredibly salty, even for someone like me who generally enjoys salty flavors. The overall taste of the food was more in line with Indian cuisine, which was unexpected considering the restaurant's title and our initial expectations of Chinese vegetarian fare. My experience at this restaurant was not what I had hoped for, given the disparity between its description as a Chinese Vegetarian Restaurant and the reality of it being an Indian restaurant with dishes that didn't match the expected flavors. I advise those who are seeking authentic Chinese vegetarian cuisine to manage their expectations before dining here.

The food is amazing here!!! Everything we ate was delicious and the desserts were wonderful. But the wait staff suffers a bit when they are busy with a full house. We loved that food came from the kitchen as soon as it was hot off the pan but our drinks didn't require that level of work and took a long time to come to us and we had to ask for water for the table too. Overall good restaurant! I went with a couple of friends, we had some entries and mains. The written menu is pretty bad: too many words and the names of dishes are in Chinese, so that doesn’t help guess what they are like (no pictures). So you try to interpret what a dish will be like but it doesn’t always work. That was my case: I ordered a salad and was told: “sorry, salads are only pre-order”. Apparently you have to order a salad in advance if you wanna eat it there, whatever that means. Then after asking some advice to the waiter I ordered the Tang Cu Qie Zi, expecting something light, and was faced with the most dense sour-sweet sauce-covered sludge that did NOT look easy on the eye. Had to order some rice to eat it with, else I would have succumbed to a sour-sweet death. Anyway, this was mostly my poor choice: my friends managed to order normal food that looked and tasted delicious! I shall go again. And steer away from the Tang Cu Qie Zi.

Overall, some incredible vegetarian food! It was great to see & taste some amazing dishes that was not a meat substitute, however … the fried food was not great, greasy & unpleasant, perhaps a light battering such as tempura rather than heavy deep fried to the point of reducing all flavour would be a better option, otherwise a great meal.

So had I only ate my rice and a few bits of potato and paid a £39 for everything. The stater of dumplings were a let down as well. They had fried them and they where all falling apart and to much salt again. Not like the pictures on Google. Also the early bird menu isn’t £12 it’s £17 Or £17. 99 . Really disappointing! I ordered the food during my work break and have to work with customers so I didn't want to be reeking of garlic while serving. I ordered the Suyan Special Curry and it was unlike any curry I've had before. It was basically like an oily soup with unseason potatoes and sweet potatoes through it and a whole bulb of garlic. I just had to throw it away it was so bad. My friend couldn't eat his noodles either. Was very disappointing and a waste of money.

Starters were brilliant - great flavour, amazing textured silken tofu and phenomenal dumplings resembling a vegan meaty smoky texture. The restaurant has a cozy atmosphere, but our experience deteriorated rapidly. The main was absolutely drowning in a mystery sauce which was definitely not the sweet and sour we ordered, more like a bad Szechuan which was brown and bitter. It almost resembled an oily, viscous soup. The scarce and tiny tofu balls were slightly burnt, and there were only 4 in the entire dish, which was 95% spring onions. Rice dish was tiny for the price and very dry, lacking the flavour AND the kale which we were promised. Overall, bad experience. Wouldn’t recommend unless you’re really bored, as there are so many nicer places in bristol in better locations, especially for vegans. Ultimately, they did refund us 10%, which wasn’t nearly enough compared the quality of food and service.

We had an appalling experience here for my wife's birthday. Most of our dishes were too salty and far too garlicky. The dips we were given were so badly both of these things that it made one of our party members nearly physically sick. We all had the taste of this garlic for days after. Apart from some of the first page of the menu, dishes were not marked as vegan or spicy. A number of our main dishes were so spicy that we had to hand them back. The menu didn't say anything about spice. The staff were not friendly, and when we told them our concerns, we were rudely told that "that's just how it is" and that the menu was new, that's why it was missing important information. They didn't offer to change anything. We didn't pay for my wife's main, and she didn't end up having a main at all. Some of the starters were very nice, and the pancakes were delicious. However, that was the only positive thing about our experience at Suyuan. We will not be going back.

I was so sad about this meal! I don't like leaving negative reviews but wanted to flag this place because honestly I was really gutted with the whole experience. I was taking my friend out for her birthday, and as she's coeliac (no traces of wheat, gluten) this menu looked perfect as so much of it was marked GF. We were hoping to share dishes, so I was going to order GF too. We arrived really early (about 5.40, they open at 5.30) and asked to sit in a table by the window, we weren't allowed as we didn't have a reservation, even though there were only 3 other tables there and we were hoping to be fairly quick. We did then watch another couple who also didn't book later being allowed to sit there, which felt a bit pointless. The chef in the kitchen spent a lot of time shouting at what I presume was her new worker, and I felt really terrible for them. They had the blender to make juices in the main room where we were sitting, and it was deafening. The room itself was really dark (someone had their phone torch on to see the menu) and was also absolutely freezing - half way through I actually put my coat back on, and a lady who was sat next to us asked repeatedly if the heating was on. We went for the starter, main and a rice/pancake early bird deal, but it actually turned out that despite most of the menu labelled as gluten free, barely any were suitable for allergies, (I think only 2 starters, a small handful of the mains) so none of the things we initially ordered were actually available for us. This would have been absolutely fine if at any point this had been mentioned anywhere on the menu/online/ by the service staff when we sat down. The service and food were slow. The only rice dish that was available for GF was plain rice (which is bizarre), and we were told that it was being cooked and would take 5/10 minutes - no problem. The dishes that we were allowed came out after about 20 minutes, and we checked on the plain rice, and were told again it would take 5/10 minutes. The rice (that I watched the chef run her fingers through to see the texture of it while being cooked) finally arrived as we'd stopped eating. The dishes themselves were fairly bland and pretty steep - we didn't finish anything. Although I will say the pancakes that I had instead of rice (not GF) were lovely, thick and sweet - although felt like dessert. We also found a piece of plastic that looked like it had come off a new bottle or something in one of our dishes - we gave it to the service staff and he didn't really say much, just took it away. Throughout dinner, the other waiter spent some of his time unsuccessfully trying to knock in a nail on the wall for a new calendar, using a variety of things, which just felt really odd timing over the dinner service. By this point we found it all quite funny as it had been such a mess. At the end of the meal they'd taken off our drinks for the shambles but left service charge on. I could have contested it but I was trying to give my friend a lovely evening, so we left and went to a cosy pub around the corner to warm ourselves back up! I gave two stars not one because despite everything that happened I really do appreciate they checked every dish, rather than risking contamination or getting my friend sick - although it would be good if the service staff knew about the allergens upfront rather than only the chef. I'm also sure some of the other dishes that have wheat in might be lovely, the dumplings at another table looked good. To be honest I would not recommend anyone to come here when there are so many other options in town. If you drive, Haowei for GF chinese food options is fantastic!

We went here because it offered vegetarian and vegan options but the food was terrible. The ingredients of dishes didn't always agree with what it said on the menu description and many dishes were so salty, so garlicky or so full of chilli that they were inedible. The rice arrived so early that it was more or less cold when the main dishes arrived slowly and randomly. In general the premises were a bit ropey and didn't inspire confidence. When we mentioned to staff that the food quality was disappointing they just shrugged it off.

Very poor experience and I didn't even step foot in the restaurant! 🙈 Made a booking about 3 weeks in advance for 5pm on a Sunday to celebrate my anniversary with my partner. I received an email back saying that my booking was pending and that I'd get an email confirming the booking. I received no such email so I rang the restaurant the night before to enquire about the booking. During this call I confirmed the time. I was told not to worry, I'd receive an email on the morning of my booking confirming everything. I did not receive any email. I assumed it was just a technical glitch so thought that it was best to just arrive at the time of our booking. I arrive at the restaurant to find the restaurant didn't open until 5.30pm. This wouldn't have been an issue, however we had other things booked that evening, had we been advised the night before, that they didn't open until 5.30pm we could have at least tried to push our plans back. I then called them and the person I spoke to on the phone basically said that the booking system is automatic and the only person that could change it was the boss and that there was nothing they could do. Heard great things about the food here but was warned about the service. Very disappointed and won't be returning as clearly the warnings were accurate.

I dined here before the pandemic and I loved the food so was really looking forward to another visit. Unfortunately, it was really really disappointing - it feels like a different restaurant (pretty sure they have a different chef to last time). My husband's main was better out of the two but was unbelieveably salty (and we both like our salt) - like someone emptied a half a bottle of soy sauce into it. My dish was shredded tofu swimming in a huge tub of thin broth, it ironically lacked salt completely or promised peanut sauce, but was instead full of minced raw garlic and dried chillies. The balance of flavour was completely off. We were both starving and had a concert to go to aftwards so we ate what we could but will not be going there again. We ordered one starter, two mains, one portion of rice and a small mineral water and the bill came to £43.95, which is a bit on the steep side - I would not begrudge the money if the food was as good as last time, but with this time it felt like a cynical rip off. Both the menu and the portions are massive, scaling down the number of dishes on offer and the protion sizes and focusing on better execution of them would make for a better experience. ------------------------------------------- This was my previous review: Beautiful food, full of flavour and nicely presented. Lots of amazing sounding vegan dishes on the menu. We will definitely become regulars here. Highly recommended !!

We went full of expectation and the ambience of the place was great. Our starters were tiny but mine, the vegetable balls with a garlicky tangy sauce was great. My partners, which was a bit of cold spinach with some walnuts was not. But the...

Absolutely delicious food. Best Chinese I've ever had. 12 of us ate here recently and the flavours in each dish were amazing. So fresh and made with love. We haven't stopped talking about the flavours since. Gem of a place 💎

Cute, small space with beautiful food! A hidden gem of Bristol. You definitely won't leave without feeling full and delightful. The food is really nice. The sevice is slow but that is because they make everything there and then. Which I didn't mind. The place is small and cosy, but definitely has a good vibe to it, that sticks to the theme. The only thing which was not quite to the theme was the music. There are no booze available, but you can definitely bring your own to the table. So good meals and a drink that you choose to bring and know it's good 👍 There are only vegetarian and vegan options available, but trust me this is not going to be a detrement to you meal. It is delicious!

We booked via the booking site for 5pm, although the restaurant didn’t actually open until 5:30pm which wasn’t ideal, however the staff let us sit inside and order some drinks while we waited until about 5:20pm, when we ordered the food! I thought this was...

We love this place. The food is absolutely delicious and the most authentic Chinese food we've tried in the UK (we lived in China for a few months). The dumplings and Chinese cabbage are 2 of our favourite dishes, bit everything else we've tried has been amazing too. We really recommend it!

I stumbled (literally) upon this place by chance whilst visiting Bristol. What a TREAT! Beautifully tasty food, cleverly balanced flavours and and exciting menu to tempt you to experiment a bit more. Priced very reasonably. Lovely staff too. Just watch the (slight) trip hazard as you leave!

Hidden gem of a restaurant. Don't let the vegetarian menu put you off, these guys dish up some of the tastiest food in Bristol. Dumplings and sweet and sour aubergine are a must. Also great for large groups.

If a Chinese restaurant is full of foreigners and not a single Asian face is seen, is it delicious or not? I checked it out and ordered sweet and sour eggplant, fried tofu and Northeastern fried rice. The staple food was assorted fried rice. They are all very good, with a slightly strong taste and go well with rice. No wonder I want to lick the bowls that foreigners eat when they see them. The price is slightly expensive, so if foreign friends need recommendations, this is of course their first choice.

Excellent food but a little bit overly salty. The restaurant is quite small, book ahead as it gets full quickly. The food is really great, lots of flavour, but alot of it was overly salty. Lots of coriander used, so if your not a fan, perhaps not for you! Lots of choice on the menu.
