Steki Taverna in Portsmouth

Food was ok no issues but feel it's lost some of the old greek feel and friendlies felt very much eat and go. I've visited many times over the last 5 years again great food but please don't lose your roots keep the family atmosphere and friendliness

It was a very quiet Wednesday so it did lack a bit of atmosphere. The waitress was very friendly but lacked enthusiasm. The food was good. We had all 3 courses. We stayed until closing just chatting.

Nice clean modern restaurant serving generous portions of Greek food. The moussaka looked especially large. 50% too much for the lady sitting at the table next to us. We had calamari, pork gyros etc all lovely. Only took a point off for the small bottled beers being £4.95 each. Adds a lot to the bill if you have a few each.

The food is nice and has improved since my last visit. We opted for the Cypriot meze, at around £29 per person. Great selection of starters and average portion of some meats were served. All other tables were given a free shot with the bill, apart from us. Wasn't disappointed but not impressed either.

What a place! The Chicken Donor meat is amazing!! Had the Mixed Grill to Share and it was up there with one of the best Greek Meals I have ever had. Meat was tender, hot and full of juices! Absolutely destroyed the dish and left feeling 10stone heavier as I could not stop eating Decorations are great and it's like being back in Santorini! Massively recommend

We have been before but we’re aware of the new decor so visited for a meal. It’s so beautiful inside now, totally like you are in Greece. Lovely comfortable chairs and big tables to allow room for your dishes and plates. Gorgeous food as always. The manager was telling us that it had a new owner and it had increased trade, looks, opening hours, staff and takings. Well done, it’s a great place to go! We will return.

Recently renovated, this is one of my favourite restaurants in Portsmouth. Consistently great service and food, never fails to impress.

so disappointed....we were stuck on a table on the side ,almost a corridor next to the bar. ordered a bottle of house white wine for just under £20 and a 500ml bottle of weak watery wine came....they should have mentioned it was a 500ml on the menu. I complained and the waitress went to change it to a Pino Gricio at just under £25...so expensive for a standard bottle of wine. The greek owner obviously had an issue with this as i heard him say something about the wine before was white...i asked if there was an issue and he made some comment and so we got up and left. not a cheap menu either and when we ordered we had to remind the waitress that we wanted fries as the choice as she did not seem to know what she was doing. We wont go back. a shame as we wanted to try Steki again after not being there for years.

Had high hopes for the newly renovated Stekis when my friend and I went for a late lunch (10.07.23). The decor "almost" makes you feel you could be in Greece, but the inadequate service and poor food soon makes you realise you're in Osborne Road, Southsea! We ordered a trio of dips, taramasalata, hummus and aubergine. What arrived was watery dips, lacking in any kind of flavour or seasoning, accompanied by some lame looking pitta breads (looked shop bought). . Probably the worst dips I have ever eaten in any Greek restaurant. For mains, my friend ordered prawn saganaki and for myself fried anchovies. I had initially asked the waitress if the anchovies had a coating on them, but she didn't know the answer and brought someone out from the kitchen, who advised they were coated in flour and fried. What arrived to the table was something that resembled frozen food from a packet (not fresh fish) and deep fried within an inch of its life. Very unpleasant. My friend's prawn dish looked insipid but the prawns were definitely king prawns but again, the dish lacked any kind of seasoning or decent flavour. Basically, our food was made without love, which is something truly authentic Greeks excel at, food made with love and attention to detail. As an aside, the waitress had very long false nails, which I find very un-hygenic when working with food! We will NOT be returning!

First time visit to Steki, and it didn't disappoint. The place was very busy, always a good sign, luckily we had booked. A lovely smell of food cooking detected on arrival! Restaurant itself is small, lots of tables quite close but it had an amazing vibe, great decor and Greek music. The food was just wow! Very fresh, hot and very tasty. Hubby had houmous with the most delicious bread, my garlic mushrooms were so good. We shared mixed grill and there was plenty, huge portions here. I enjoyed a glass of ouzo, didn't really have room for dessert but wanted to try the orange cake which was so moist and delicious. Our lovely attentive server, obviously very busy but still found time for a chat. First visit but definitely not the last.

Wonderful to see Steki's open again. Superb atmosphere with very friendly and professional staff. The food and wine were outstanding and great value for money. We had a wonderful evening, so nice that we were the last ones to leave! We'll definitely be back. Very strongly recommended.

We came here because we’d seen in reviews (and in the window) that they had good food and were good for allergies/food intolerances. We went on Easter Sunday. We booked online and mentioned that I can’t have dairy. We also let them know when we were arrived. I asked if they had an allergen menu or book I could consult when deciding what to have. The waitress told me they didn’t but that I could ask her when I ordered and she’d let me know. I don’t love this approach. It makes it hard to decide what you want, you have to have several options ready in case and there’s every possibility that none of those options are suitable so you have to pick again. Also it can lead to a lot of back and forth between the table and the kitchen. In this case there wasn’t a lot of back and forth because the waitress seemed to be doing it from her head. Not necessarily a bad thing. It can be a good sign of staff know what’s in their food. I asked if I could have something and was told no so I asked about the souvlaki and was told yes. I then asked about a side and was told it contained dairy so I couldn’t have it. Something made me double check about the souvlaki. I’m so glad I did. The waitress said the marinade contained dairy but that is was ok because the ‘heat’ of the cooking would ‘get rid of it.’ That is obviously not the case at all. This is quite a dangerous lack of knowledge about allergens. I picked something instead and she said she would check with the kitchen. She didn’t come back to confirm the kitchen had said it was ok. We were one of three tables occupied in the restaurant so they weren’t busy. It was brought to the table and when I asked her if the kitchen had confirmed it didn’t contain dairy she said ‘…. Yeah….’ In a very casual, vague fashion as she walked off. It wasn’t reassuring. If you don’t have an issue with foods then perhaps you don’t understand how anxiety-inducing this can be, but surely people working in hospitality should know this is not creating a relaxing time for their customers? If you did this with a nut allergy for instance, you could end up having to call an ambulance. I hate to write reviews like this but I really feel some training is required to make a safe and enjoyable experience for customers with allergies and food intolerances. Some positives: The people with me were also quite stressed on my behalf but did say their food was good. They had souvlaki and sardines. They have Greek lemonade which was lovely.

It used to be our favourite greek restaurant in whole country. But not anymore as they messed up our online booking. We booked for a traditional birthday celebration ( as every year for years), but just 45 min before we're told "Sorry, your booking didn't go through!" Your bad.

Really upset. Ordered the two most expensive items on the menu and just found out that although I specifically asked for our food - we could not finish eating - to be packed when we just opened it at home and it has not, our favourite things are missing and they did not even tell us. It is OUR MONEY and you cheated us out of it. That is unacceptable and intolerable. And I gave you a huge tip and you were not ashamed to accept it. Shame on you!!

Called in without pre-booking they were a little qiet but hat didn't bother os. We were welcomed by a nice young guy (Thannos?) and were able to choose out own table. Starters of Tzatziki and Bougiourdai Chilly were huge and well cooked, Main courses of Moussaka and Steki Mixed Grill were again huge and excellent, all washed down with a litre of House Rose at a very reasonable £15.90. Service was good with only one minor criticism - our main course arrived just as we finished the starters . Given the size of the portions we could have done with a few minutes 'rest' ,. We had a good experience and would recommend The Steki,

This was our first ever restaurant we visited when coming to Portsmouth 12 years ago. We’ve always been quite fond of it and due to COVID not having been for a while we thought we’d go again on a Saturday night. The food was ok, we had the mixed grill and tzatziki form the starters (pricey for what it is). The main meal was missing the side of rice and also one of the chicken skewers. Had the house rose which really isn’t drinkable. Firstly it was warm and just really unpleasant. Reminded me of some very bad Greek wine (I used to live in Greece) Anyway, no atmosphere in there. So loud you couldn’t even have a conversation and the tables so close to each other (about 20cm gap) It’s like having meal with another couple whether you want to or not. Surely this is not ok in terms of social distancing!!! Went to the ladies to find the toiled seat broken and the soap dispenser refilled with water…I mean come on. Lacking basic hygiene…we left quickly and will certainly not return. I’d recommend you go to another Greek (or Turkish) restaurant in Portsmouth. There are quite a few about.

Authentic Greek cuisine in Portsmouth, proper nice grill flavors, friendly staff. The food was amazing, cooked to perfection if you are around the area and want some delicious dishes, Steki Taverna is your place.

I was very disappointed with this restaurant. I had an octopus starter which was quite nice and as a fan of octopus but it is rarely on menus. So I was optimistic unfortunately this was where the quality stopped. I had a bizarre lamb/rice/tomato main but the meat was so chewing I could not eat it. A lot of the items on the menu or online were unavailable.

Incluso conseguí una jarra preciosa para llevar y estoy muy agradecida por eso, ya que es preciosa. Definitivamente lo recomendaría si quieres tener una comida que sea verdadera cocina griega, me llevó de regreso a Grecia. Simplemente encantador.

Magníficos entrantes que compartimos seguidos de un postre principal y otro compartido porque el postre que queríamos no estaba disponible. We were able to book with only a couple of hours notice on a Friday night and ordered some starters and a main to share with Greek salad.The dolmadakia were good but that’s about where it ends unfortunately. The tatziki was like shop-bought stuff - bland, creamy and without anywhere near enough garlic. We actually added more lemon juice to it to provide flavour. They also brought us aubergine instead of courgette, in what was a very simple order.Then the waitress threw our moussaka at us without checking we’d finished our starter leaving us with a million plates and the moussaka to go cold. They’d also drenched the moussaka in olive oil to serve - totally unnecessary.The Greek salad was awful - olives and tomatoes weren’t even slightly ripe. This was the worst Greek meal I’ve ever had and I struggle to see how anyone has been in there and been served quality food (as many of the reviews suggest). It’s hard to find authentic Greek food in the UK, but our search will continue (and we’ll just keep going back to Greece/Cyprus in the meantime or continue trying to cook it at home!)

Había estado aquí hace un par de años y fue realmente agradable.Anoche fue un desastre.El souvalaki de pollo estaba tan cocido que estaba muy seco y desagradable. Los mejillones en tomate no eran comestibles. y sabía horrible. . . . literalmente solo podíamos comer un par antes de rendirnos.El personal no es muy acogedor y, desde luego, nada como la amable bienvenida que siempre recibimos en los restaurantes de Grecia en numerosas vacaciones.No volveré y no podría recomendar

Lovely little restaurant, was informed to us of being there so thought we'd try it out.Went with family, reserving a table online was easy and straightforward. Food and service good, we ordered too much so asked fir a break,during the break we coukd see our next plattersat under hot plate. I get they want to turn tables but don't spoli the experience with impatiance you shoukd want us to enjoy all the food.

We ate here having been told by our hotel receptionist that is served authentic greek food. Boy - did this place deliver! The staff were friendly and attentive and the food was absolutely delicious. The portions are very generous too despite the low prices on the menu. We were only in Portsmouth for the weekend or we would have definitely gone back to visit again. We would highly recommend you visit this little gem.

We though we would give this place a try. The food was ok, but ruined by cheap sachet's of mayonnaise and ketchup. It would have been nice if some small pots of different sauces came out with tge meal, or at the very least some mayonase in a small bowl, the sachets just cheapend the meal. With a few changes, it could be amazing.

Greek food is our favourite , but I'm sorry to say that we were quite disappointed in our meal. Mainly because of the very small portions. I'm not a big eater - but two tendrils of octopus for my main course was really quite frankly ridiculous!

The starter of octopus was beautiful! Staff friendly and attentive, lamb chops for main was good and the gyros my friend had were really good too... recommend for a lovely Greek dinner

We´ve went here a few days ago and had a lovely time. Staff were very friendly and the atmosphere felt like a true Taverna. Food was quick to arrive after ordering and very tasty. The price was reasonable and recommend this place for sure! Will be going back 100%.

We were in Portsmouth to join in celebrations for D-Day 75. The concessions available were the standard overpriced unappealing fare.

Vegetarian Moussaka awful. Microwaved and burnt. Waitress didn't ask how our meals were when collecting plates. Salad was so small just like a dressing. Greek salad starter very bland...….think they omitted the olive oil!

This was the second time visiting this restaurant. A Wednesday night and busy. The staff were very efficient and very friendly and food was delivered quickly. The Souvalaki was very tasty as were the Koftes.Very good food well worth the visit.

Ate here last night, appeared promising quite a few other diners, ordered a drink and our starters which arrived after a little wait. Dips were nice, ordered mains and when they arrived, both had a very small portion of salad more a dressing than anything, Mains were okay. After a lengthy delay never got asked if we would like any more drinks so didn’t have any. Ordered two deserts, both of which were poor and neither were finished. The baklava had to be cut with a fork and knife. Had to ask for the bill 3 times and when the issue of the deserts was raised just got told sorry, we would not return sadly

We have both been going to Steki for years for many special occasions for dinner both and Steki in Portsmouth and Brighton branch where we previously lived. If you are a Greek food lover I can highly recommend this place! The quality of the food is outstanding and very delicious! The staff are very friendly and no waiting time on the food, they even gave us complimentary biscuits and shots with the bill, now that’s top service! We will continue to come back here always!

I have not visited this restaurant for years and I'm not sure why I have not been back. A get together for four friends prompted our visit. We shared a litre carafe of house red, we all had a starter, main and shared two desserts between us and the bill including service charge worked out at only £24 each. We all enjoyed the food, two of us were veggie and were spoilt for choice.

As confirmed Grecophiles, we were keen to sample a local Greek restaurant with friends. We enjoyed our meals but found the atmosphere slightly lacking in the 'chill' factor of the typical taverna. Service was very good, however.

Both hubby & I enjoyed our meal while visiting the area....it wasn't amazing but it was good. My prosecco was a little flat but our starter of olives & garlic pitta was plentiful. It was a quiet Thursday eve & hubby had a mixed grill & I had lamb chops (very grilled but how I love them) with salad (very small & basic) rice, slightly bland but easy to season & a pile of pitta (warm & plentiful).

The wine is cheap and not great and service wasn’t the best but my god the Feta Saganaki with honey and the Lamb Giouvetsi were INCREDIBLE.

Highly recommend this restaurant. Food and service were excellent. So many dishes to choose from the menu. Will definitely be going back.

We were thrilled to find this place randomly. I’ve spent a lot of time in Greece and I love Greek food. We had a wonderful dinner, would highly recommend!

Good Service and once our starters came we had great expectations. I had meat balls shaped like sausages in a spicy sauce. Well the meat balls were lovely the sauce didn’t have any spice at all, vey disappointed as I ordered it because of the spice. My husband ordered vegetarian moussaka!!! When it arrived I could see it didn’t look the best. Soggy aubergine with set mashed potato on top, it looked unpleasant. My husband said it tasted as though it had been warmed up in a microwave. Very disappointed as we always look to taste something different while we are on holiday , we will not be recommending or returning.

As we are a fan of Greek food we were looking forward to our evening at Steki.

Really nice food, nice environment, polite staff. It stays open till late and on our visit to Portsmouth it was the only greek restaurant that was open. As greek I recommend it and advice to try "saganaki with honey and sousami".
