Absolutely Fantastic! We’ve just hosted 32 friends for my husbands birthday lunch and we were so impressed with the service, food and atmosphere. Ionela and her team are amazing! The new rain covers & heaters also worked exceptionally well especially with the mid afternoon down pour! We hardly noticed it was happening, bar loads of people running for cover. The kids also loved the jungle gym too. We love Stein’s & will be back again soon & definitely for next year’s celebrations too! Thank you!

Popped in for lunch & drinks on a busy afternoon on Saturday. We found a table and waited to be acknowledged. After 15 mins I approached a waitress & asked if we could order. She scowled & eventually brought over the drinks menu. We ordered our drinks & she said she’d come back to take our food other, Waited over 30 mins for the drinks. Said waitress avoided eye contact & ignored us when tried to get her attention. Asked a different waiter if our drinks were coming. They appeared eventually after a wait of 40 mins. During this time we deliberated walking out but decided it was rude if the drinks order had been put through. Waitress was approaching tables around us asking if they required anything else etc. Not once did she approach us to take a food order. Eventually I got up to ask for the drinks bill which she eventually brought. We told her we’d been waiting to order food. She shrugged & walked off with no apology whatsoever. So very rude!

Sure, the location is fantastic. But the good stuff stops here. The food is insulting everyone, particularly Germany. The sausages are said to be imported from Bavaria. I don't know if that's true but I know that I, as a German, would not manage to eat them another time. Everything disappoints: sausage is terrible, mash is tasteless, pan fried potatoes are mushy and too fat .... it's really difficult to express how embarrassed I feel that customers here think this is German food. Believe a German who moved here just 4 weeks ago: It isn't. I gave the team a second chance actually since my kids wanted to go. Same result. Run for your life and the integrity of your tastebuds! The only discipline in which this place excels is the sheer chuzpah to serve this food. And asking for actually quite high prices.

Beer was good, sausage was good. Fried potatoes tasty but very oily. Sauerkraut, well, what can I say that others haven’t already said? “Dreadful” comes to mind. Apple strudel was, er, quite honestly, let’s just say the apple strudel at Lidl is better than this by a country mile. Custard was cold - I have never in my life been served cold custard. Waitress was adamant that was how it should be. Really? Chocolate cake - dry and cold, obviously it had been standing around in a cold cupboard for too long. Won’t ever go back & can’t recommend that you give it a try. Yes, it’s a lovely setting but this is clearly a good idea very badly executed. There is plenty of competition for your dining dollars in the immediate vicinity & they’re doing nothing to get you to come back here, so save yourself the disappointment & find somewhere else to eat.

Beautiful setting sadly the food was overpriced and very poor. Noodles were tasty although slightly greasy. The vegan sausages were dreadful. Sauerkraut dreadful and the potatoes looked like they’d been just thrown on to the plate. Such cheap presentation and quality. I’m sure none of the dishes are actually made there! Such a shame as prime location. Would definitely not go back. Servers were friendly. Beer was good so stop for a drink and admire the view but seriously don’t bother with the food! Expensive and very poor!

Stoped here for a drink and a bite to eat on warm sunny day. Great, fresh and refreshing German beer and loved my bratwurst and potato salad. Tried the sauerkraut which was also good. I think their license requires you to eat - which is fair enough - it’s the law and their business after all. Attentive service. Loved it and the venue by the river is superb.

The service here is decidedly shaky. All I wanted was apple strudel and a mug of tea. The mug of tea arrived without milk. Then came the strudel saga. I was offered ice-cream which i declined. Then a plate with a hot, limp roll of strudel arrived buried in cinnamon sugar with a mass of spray, whipped cream. I tasted the cream, it was very artificial, over sweet with a yucky vanilla colouring and flavour. I sent this back as I did not want cream at all, just apple strudel. I was then brought a plate with a flaccid roll of something that was only fit for the bin. The strudel over heated in a microwave, the pastry entirely uncooked, the apple a sweetened sauce with very few raisons hurried in it, no apparent dried bread crum , no walnuts, no crispness. No wander they needed this desert with cream and sugar. The apparent boss, offered me and a refund a remarked the 'you can't please them all'. Its a shame people's expectations are so low. Sadly my phone had packed in so no images. But believe me! The river side setting is what makes this place but such a shame the food is so bad.

If you’re looking for good quality German food, forget eating here. I am half German/ English and have lived in London all my life. My German grandma and mother used to make sauerkraut all the time. I’ve eaten sauerkraut all over the place, in Munich in Frankfurt and in london . The stuff they serve here is dry, tasteless, tepid and lacked any flavour. There was not a drop of juice in it and seemed lifeless and not fresh at all. It was like tackling a plate of dried up old grannies hair. HORRIBLE. Guys you need to make an effort. And for £18 quid… seriously 😟

Well as local residents my partner & I were totally shocked & disgusted by how we were treated by one of the worst waiters we have every encountered. We arrived around 9pm and the place was pretty much empty asked for a table and were told to sit anywhere by one staff member who asked if we were there for food or drinks and as we had just eaten in Scotts we just wanted a quick drink on the way home so said drinks , our drinks arrived - A few minutes later another waiter came to take our food order he was very rude and told us we needed to order food otherwise we’d have to leave, we said your colleague said it was fine to just have a couple do drinks no problem, he then told us we needed to finish our drinks and leave within 5mins and when I said we won’t rush and it’s not our fault he stormed off and shouted to his colleague thanks for making his job so much more difficult, He then went to the kitchen screamed at top of his voice before coming out again stomping around and giving us dirty looks and commenting saying we need to get out and leave NOW NOW, He even disturbed others diners who were disgusted by his behaviour and it was totally embarrassing and inappropriate, his colleagues and manager tried to control him but he continued to shout abuse screaming that we needed to get out and he worked there we didn’t so we should be the ones to leave, we complained to the manger who didn’t even tell him off and we have no idea what was wrong with this chap and why he showed such hatred towards my partner and I, but it was totally and utterly disgusting and unacceptable. We finished our drinks and as we were leaving he was screaming and shouting at us whilst his manager and colleague tried to calm him down. I would like to have a manager from head office reach out to me to discuss this further before I take this to social media where I have a vast following across several platforms. I can be reached on : sloane1000@hotmail.co.uk I look forward to hearing from you soon. Regards, Lord Mark A Sloane.

There was que to only 1 toilet, toilet not cleaned. Very expensive I ordered Chicken steak medium sized, potato salad, charged me £25 does not include drinks. Separately paid for 1 lemonade they charged £5.70, separately paid for 1 pint cider charged me £7.90. The riverside location is very good.

The food it’s got worse since last time we went. Looks and taste cheap but they charge a huge amount of money. Service was quick but when I needed to order take away it took absolute ages and the waiter kept ignoring me and going to other tables especially after I asked him for a take away order. The takeaway boxes were a mess. Instead of placing 2x sausage portions (with mash and salad in each) they have placed sausages and mash in 1 box and sausages and sauerkraut in another. This is the last time we go there. You find the same sausages in Lidl and my mash is 100% better than theirs for probably £2 - £3 per portion not £16.90. I don’t care if it’s Richmond. I don’t have an issue with paying that as long as the quality is good.

Just as an example of how pricey food can be, we odered the Nuernberger Sausage main dish which come with 6 (yes you read it right, six) tiny sausages and a lot of sauerkraut, mash potato and salad garnish for £16.90! Ridiculous. Won't be coming back any time soon!

We made an impromptu stop here with the kids on our river walk in it’s our dog. Sat outside despite the cold thanks to the small heaters by the table and fur rugs to sit on. In true biergarten style, the beaches are quite uncomfortable to sit, but the food, the view and the staff make up for it. We had a variety is sausages, cheese spread and schnitzels, hot chocolates and beer. Will return, as always.

A impromptu stop as we were walking along The Thames and fancied a coffee. We had a lovely table with great views. We wanted to stop for an alcoholic drink and were advised that their license meant that you had to have something to eat as well (this took us back to the ‘scotch egg’ days of recent years gone by 😂). Our very friendly waiter suggested a pretzel which was huge and absolutely delicious. If you are lucky you might see one of the green parrots. Apparently (according to our waiter), in years gone by 2 green parrots escaped from a house and never returned, they have mated and the family grown over the years. The noise they make is very distinctive and they are very beautiful. A really nice spot and we will be back.

14.30 10/9/2022, Table 7. We ordered using the recommended app which worked well, although it did take an automatice service charge before we had experienced service and had a choice. Wine arrived quickly with a promise food would be with us soon. 30 mins later I asked where our starter was and if the salad which had been sitting on the serving bar was ours. We got the salad BUT someone else was complaining at the same time they were waiting for their meal. They came and took our salad and gave it to them as well as asking an adjoining table if they could take the food they had been given in error. After a further 10 minutes I complained again. Young waitress apologised for the delay and left quickly. Short while later the salad starter arrived only to be followed 3 minutes later by our main courses. No apology or acknowledgement as the plates were left. The food was okay if not startling but it was hard to enjoy the salad of cheese and pear. We ate and left still waiting for any acknowledgement there had ever been a problem. We did notice that we were not the only people complaining and the staff seemed harassed and not in control in any way. I should have asked for a refund of the starter cost and the automatic service charge but I had no confidence any decision maker would have been on site. Overall an incredibly disappointing experience and I would advise people to avoid this restaurant and go to Gaucho just next door.

We had just bought three portions of their overpriced currywurst and I was annoyed that when we explained the situation he did not immediately apologise for so harshly accusing us of using their facilities as a “public toilet”. In fact, when my mum was in the toilet he decided to reprimand me further for being in the way of a man waiting for the gents’ toilet. He later apologised to my mum when I was in the toilet but I was still annoyed. You shouldn’t work in hospitality/customer service if you’ve got an abrasive personality. The interaction really really ruined my day.

Whoever has tried proper German food knows that this is more than an embarrassment. Its a joke. Overpriced lidl sausage that costs nearly 14 quid. Lentil soup for £6.50 is completely tasteless and looked like dishwater. For the same price you can visit the Ivy and eat incredibly well. Ordered a dark beer and instead received something completely different, a white beer with attitude from the staff claiming that thats exactly what I have ordered. Honestly. If you are familiar with bavarian food you will notice this is a JOKE within seconds. We ate here after a long pleasant walk down the river. I got menus for our table since the waiter refused to acknowledge our arrival. I ordered mini bratwursts with mashed potato and sauerkraut, which you order yourself at the till which they then bring to your table which you then have to take around the corner of the seating area to the self-serve condiments (mustard; ketchup, not sure whyt hey don't just put bottles on each table..). the sausages were literally the same as the ones you can buy from Lidl or Aldi. However, the biggest disappointment was the mashed potato which was actually Smash - dehydrated potato powder mixed with water resembling a trampled turd in both texture and appearance. I paid £13 for Smash and Lidl sausages with a 'salad garnish' that didn't even had any dressing. The best thing about this place was the cleanish toilet.

In truth, it's one of the worst meals I've had in 5 years, and what you eat is not German, but fake meat sausages and meatloaf with reconstituted fillings served with frozen or dried mash potato mix. What a discovery on the banks of The Thames River at Richmond. With a beautiful Monet-like willow drooping it's leaves in the water, an excellent variety of Bavarian food and drinks awaits you. You might want to eat here several times to get the full Bavarian feel of this excellent cuisine. Many a German accent was heard around us as we ordered and then ate in the sunshine by the river. Tables are abundant and we enjoyed watching the tide come in so quickly as we ate and drank surrounded by happy people, their kids and dogs and quite few cyclists fuelling up for the popular tracks along the river banks. Sauerkraut, warm potato salad, sausages, steins of Bavarian beers and Bavarian wines are all to be had in this authentic restaurant.

We've been regular patrons over the years, and the setting remains excellent - next to the river, well shaded, lots of tables and with a safe place at the back for children to play including slides and seesaw. But sadly the staff are changing, and for the worse! My wife is allergic to potatoes, and on previous visits they've always happily swapped the side of potatoes for a bread roll, with a smile. Not any more though - despite bread rolls being on the menu at 90p and the fried potatoes at £3, apparently no swaps are allowed at all. What really upset us though was the sheer rudeness of the staff - "we've never made substitutes" (not true, we've been eating here for years) and sneering "I very much doubt that's true" when we said it's never been a problem in the past, followed by more arguing and attitude as the queue behind us grew. Setting aside the sheer pettiness and and refusal to accommodate any reasonable allergies, the real problem is the nasty attitude - there's really never a need for such offensive response to courteous requests. If the policy on substituting or removing sides has changed, just tell us politely and we'll head elsewhere, don't be rude... This place will no doubt continue to prosper thanks to the idyllic location, and the food remains good (albeit increasingly pricey for what it is) but this experience suggested that either staff training is falling away or Stein's is resting on its laurels, and sadly I'm not sure we'll be back.

We had to que first 30 minutes for food and then again for drinks - you even can not split since you need the recent from the food for ordering drinks. Just having a beer is also not possible. Furthermore you need to know your table to order food but which table to choose when you have to que. The que was extremely long even late. They seem not to understand how to draft a beer. Then suddenly it was not possible to get a beer since the bar was closed 20 minutes earlier that the pedantic sign said.

The ordering system is dumb. It's a bit of a wrestle in the queue in such a confined space (and the food queue is competing with the beer and toilet queues). I went along by myself to see if it was worth taking the family and - nope. It is amusing if you go by yourself because you need a table number to order food. Not sure how you are meant to keep a space reserved when you are alone. A towel maybe? Ha ha. I had a hilarious catch-22 conversation with the guy at the till. They could perhaps put a table aside for singles but now I come to think of it, I don't really see it being much fun for couples either. In any case, I do not know why they can't have a system like Wagamama. Well, I can guess that they are just being cheap - and that is the overriding impression I got from the place. I would guess that the ordering system allows them to use cheaper labour to serve the tables. Maybe German sausages are expensive to source, but the food is quite pricey and everything feels like it's done simply to pump up the margin. I've eaten similar in Munich, and places like that are fun and the food is cheaper and better. Stein's feels like a cattle market designed to extract your cash as efficiently as possible, and there's no attempt to make it any kind of experience (other than a Sainsburys till-queue simulation). I didn't half feel ripped off. I'm sure if you're with friends it could be more fun, but then someone has to volunteer to stand in the tedious queue. Anyway, I'd go somewhere else if I wanted to chat with friends. I had a £20 bill for a beer and a bland sausage-based main course inside me. Home made CURRY sauce; really? The £5.50 pint was OK, but German beer is not exactly hard to come by these days.

Delicious sausages and schnitzel, good beer, beautiful setting. A bit overpriced for the amount of food you get, especially the sausage portion, and the seating is so close together that your back touches the person sitting behind you. However, the setting is lovely.

Enjoyed this place. Arrived after a long bike ride along the river from Windsor. Feels German - but closes German. Food was good

A good German drinking den, right on the towpath. Choose your beers and snacks, go to the bar, place your order and pay, then sit overlooking the river. A wonderful way to spend a sunny afternoon.

Loved the ambiance of the outdoor restaurant. We shared a platter of sausages, sauerkraut on top of mashed potatoes. They were out the beer and dessert we wanted. You pick a seat and order at the window. The food was brought out rather quickly.

Beside the Thames . Perfect for a sunny day lunch. Need to have food to drink beer, not a problem for lunch but it is not a bar. Would have ranked excellent had the toilets been better!

£7.80 for 2 small beers seems expensive - even for Richmond - but the guy pouring the beer got a glass a third full of lemonade from under the counter that he topped up with beer. Trying to pass off lemonade at the price of beer? Very poor show

Slap bang on the Thames walkway in Richmond, this place is very well situated. We went there on 2018's hottest day when the temperature touched 36C and cold beer was all we could think of. This was supposed to be a short visit and just a drink, but after having queued for a long time we were told that we weren't allowed to buy beer unless we had dinner. I've never ever heard anything like that before, anywhere in England, and wonder if it's really a legal rule or just a way to up sales? Anyway; we bought food which was OK when it came to sausages. Vegan sausage was good and so was the currywurst, whereas my tuna salad left more to wish.

We came here in the summer, which has to be the best time to visit, as all seats are outside. There are outdoor heaters, but a warm summer evening by the river has to be the best time to come here, although competition for the tables closest to the river is strong. The view of the river is wonderful, always interesting, and this is a great place to spend an evening watching passers by and river life whist enjoying your food. The tables are long trestle types, so this is not personal, romantic dining, but it can also make for interesting conversation with your neighbours at dinner. You order at the counter, then pay separately for food and drink, not my favourite system of paying but it works ok. The menu is Bavarian - wurst in a number of disguises, with traditional accompaniments - sauerkraut, which I love. The salads looked good, but we had all gone there for the wurst, so we chose bratwurst, currywurst and cheese and pork sausage - all tasty and filling. We also stuck to beer rather than wine, enjoying the blonde beer on a hot summer night. There were options other than wurst - including a vegan dish - with schnitzel or salad looking good. The desserts were interesting, the friend who chose the Germknodel felt that it was rather heavy and uninteresting, I chose cheesecake, which was what I epected for baked cheesecake, a goo balance of flavours, but again a very filling end to a meal. This is a great restaurant for a fun evening with friends and family, but take it as it is and be prepared for Bavarian food and the functional set-up, it works and can make for an enjoyable and different meal.

I visited Stein’s for lunch on a very hot day in Richmond. This place is located straight on the river in Richmond and has a wonderful view of the River & Richmond Bridge. All the tables are outside and you have both sunshine & shade. You need to order at the bar for both drinks & food. Service was quick but the place was pretty empty when we arrived, being midday. Food is good and well presented, recommended if you are after a big aperitivo or with a group of friends.

We stopped by as the location is gorgeous. Ordered 5 salads, a side and a beer for over 65£. Portions were small and the sauce on all salads was so salty we couldn't finish our food. Chicken was too salty too. We won't return and don't recommend it.

Walking along the river on a boiling day, seeing ice cold "steins" of beer was tempting, daft cue, you order a few drinks but must order food first, why? Anyhow, order the cheapest of sausage which was around about 5 quid, it was ok, Stein was about a 10a, good beer, pricey, but it's not like im staying here for a session, pay it and just enjoy the experience.

This is a 'genuine' German sausage/wurst type diner with German lager - served in Steins! The food is very good and the beer choice is OK. When we went it was packed with tourists but the ordering system meant that we got our food fairly quickly. London prices so take your credit card!

The place is perfect to enjoy a nice and sunny day cause the view of the river is fantastic. Also while watching the view, having a cold beer in your hand is also fantastic. Eating as well while you re drinking and watching the view...mmmm not that fantastic. The food is nothing special and with those kind of prices I would say not good at all....the service was good, but they can't feed you right?...

Located by the River at Richmond, this is a pretty authentic outdoor German restaurant, offering decent portions of (non-fancy) German food and a small selection of draught and bottled beer (you need to order food if you wish to drink). Recommended, and prices ok for the area, but not exactly for the health conscious!
