I lived across the street at 6 University Mansions from June through September of 1974 and after 50 years I’m finally returning this time with my wife and daughter! I simply can’t travel to London without returning to the Iconic Star and Garter…for lunch, drinks and sharing so many fond memories spent with new friends and my UK family…late night walks along the river and through Bishops Park…I cannot return to London without returning to the beloved Star and Garter…to reminisce…well of course…but also to discover and appreciate the changes that I know 50 years has surely brought…I have wonderful memories and great expectations…can hardly wait to walk through the doors and like MacArthur in the Philippines announce to the World …well actually more modestly to my family “I Have Returned”…🇺🇸•🏴•🇬🇧 ❤️🤍💙!!!

Visited this place with my four legged partner in crime on Friday and were greeted very warmly by the staff! As we approached the bar they already had some fresh water ready for my woofer. The place seemed a bit deserted for a Friday evening so we got the best place by the fire. The Pale Ale tasted great, huge selection of crisps (no nuts though) and miss Chackie Brown was very happy, I think she will want to come again soon.

I was in the Star and Garter last night. I live in the area but hadn’t been before. I thought it was a nice venue but the service was appalling. My friend is recovering from a broken ankle and therefore asked to use the disabled toilet. She was refused by the brunette female bar tender who even said ‘you don’t look disabled’. This is just appalling, are we meant to carry round doctors certificates? After a heated conversation the blonde female bar tender finally gave in. We were both so angry at that point so we cancelled our drinks order and left. I suggest you train your staff to be aware of potential invisible disabilities as per the equalities act. I have lots of family and friends in the area and I will advise them not to go to this venue.

A hidden gem by the river! The place seemed very quiet so not surprised why they are not serving food. Friends had a meat platter but we had to head out to get something more than that to continue our pub crawl! The fire place was super cozy and the female bartender was very nice and attentive. A bit pricey but the experience was worth it.

Attended this beautiful venue last week and was amazed at how it looked but the excitement and anticipation of a great night ahead was soon quashed by the incredibly rude and sulky barman. He looked like a petulant child! There was only half the selection of beers available and no slimline tonic. Why bars insist on selling Fever Tree is beyond me - it's awful. Throughout the night I witnessed the same barman be rude to the other guests at the party, even shouting at 2 gentlemen - he even pushed his colleague out of the way! The food was poorly displayed and as a caterer, I know was of poor quality. Bowls of cocktail sausages with no sticks to use - can you imagine the germs after 180 had put their fingers in the bowl! No thanks! This would be a great venue if it was run professionally.

I strongly recommend you avoid this place until they change two of their male staff. Attended this venue for a 60th birthday. Arrived in the afternoon to help set up and the guy that was onsite (Salvador?) was a bit grumpy but I didn’t think much of it. Arrived back in the evening and his mood hadn’t improved. He snapped at guests, was rude to children, snatched money out of hands and was generally very unpleasant. He actually seemed to get annoyed whenever he was asked for drinks! The Guinness in the upstairs bar was disgusting, like dish water. It had either been sat in the pipes for weeks or the pipes had not been cleaned properly. When I complained he told me I had to go downstairs if to get another drink if I didn’t like it. Yet he still continued to sell drinks from the same pump and I had to intervene to stop others buying it. I did go downstairs and the barman there was just as rude. He pulled a pint but the barrel ran out before it was full. He refused to change the barrel to fill up the glass properly as apparently he wasn’t allowed to leave the bar. I asked for a different drink so that I could have a full pint and he refused to serve me anything else. Had to settle for a short measure. We’ve since had a number of other guests independently comment about how rude these two guys were. One of the guests actually left the party as he had been treated so badly but didn’t want to cause a scene. These two were a complete contrast to the ladies working there, they were everything you expect from good bar staff. I felt sorry for them. The party host has also now been charged 10% service charge on the bar tab! Shame as this is a lovely place and would be great with the right staff in place it.

I can honestly say I have bumped into a few bar staff with attitude in my long life, but never have I witnessed such a gathering in one location. The attitude of the staff can make or break a party, they decided to break our one. I won't be going back and I advise you don't unless you have too!

I was lucky enough to find this venue just a month before the date I needed it for, they were so helpful, accommodating and kept in contact with me leading up to my birthday night. I also found that they were extremely organised. I used the main bar for my party and the space was great it looked stunning and has so much potential. I had a lot of comments about how lovely the venue was. My 30th was a night that I will always remember thanks to this lovely venue and fantastic staff. I will most definitely use them again in the near future.

This is a fantastic venue but just be careful if you book it for an event. I booked 3 months in advance, paid the deposit and was in email contact with the events planner. I was then called 8 days before to be told there was a problem with my booking - a technical issue with the computer system I have emails confining my deposit has been received and confirmation of my booking in September They tried to help arrange something else but I was suggested a restaurant and a number of places without availability ! Including a bar with a minimum spend of nearly £3,000 for a party of 30 ! I am now less than a week away from my party with guests having booked trains/hotels/babysitters and no venue. Just be careful, I wouldn’t want this to happen to anyone else ! Thank god it wasn’t a wedding ! I had to take a day off work, running around Putney with 2 kids in tow trying to organise a 40th I am incredibly disappointed

Popped in today for an aperol spritz but was shocked by what was made. I asked for 2 aperol spritz and as the barmaid was making it i noticed she only put 25ml of aperol and prosecco. I stopped her and said surely there should be more aperol and prosecco, she replied, "this is how we are told to make it". I asked how much this would cost and she said £8 each. She said "we could double it up, but it would cost double the price" at which point i said no we don't want the drink and left. I highly recommend that the management look at doing some drinks training for themselves and the staff. I am sure the aperol rep would be happy to help out. Because honestly they are either trying to rip people off or they don't know what they are doing.

Daniel -

We held a party in the ballroom of the Star & Garter to celebrate our recent marriage and it proved to be the perfect party venue. We used the Star & Garter ballroom for my daughter's 7th birthday. Not a very obvious choice for a child's birthday party - but it turned out beautifully. As our daughter is January born, we always have a challenge finding a suitable indoors venue. The Ballroom is big enough for 20 energetic children to run around, and enjoy all the party games they want. We were pleasantly pleased to discover that the in-house media system came free of cost, and so could also have an impromptu disco once the party games were done. The staff was very courteous, and at hand for everything that we wanted. I wouldn't hesitate to reccomend

We attended the wedding of the daughter of our closest friends here and had a wonderful day. We had a reserved area of the bar for our arrival, pre ceremony, this was warm, open fire and very welcoming. The ceremony itself was upstairs in the gorgeous hall, following which we went back downstairs to the bar for drinks and canapés, whilst the hall was reset for the wedding breakfast. Canapés were lovely, especially the chorizo and halloumi, which was warm and spicy. We went back upstairs for the reception and the food was delicious, salmon to start followed by rack of lamb and then sticky toffee pudding, the courses were interspersed with speeches which was just as well as the portions were pleantiful and the interlude between was welcomed. The lamb was cooked perfectly, which for mass catering was impressive. The seating for those tables near the dance floor was a little difficult being as you were on uneven flooring. More servers would have meant less delay and enabled people to eat at the same time, however staff were very friendly and helpful. The venue is right next to the river so there wee plenty of photo opportunities. There was a good sized dance floor, which had a good spring to it and a stage for the band. All in all an excellent wedding venue.

The venue is gorgeous with a very nice views over the Thames. Everyone at the party was impressed by The Ballroom. We will be returning next year.

Nice large sized riverside bar which serves food as well. Good atmosphere, plenty of varied seating areas. Funny staff, who could do well to ensure order instructions are accurate. I ordered a sausage roll with salad dressings and cider with a separate pint of tap water, but was advised that they were out of sausage and that there were only chicken rolls available on the menu, I settled for a chicken roll, but when my order arrived I bit into a sausage roll - confusing or what.Anyway other than that the bar is a good location to enjoy the Putney Bridge area and the atmosphere Cancer Research Boat Race 2016, which I attended.

I love coming to this place, came today with a group of friends for the Bottomless Brunch.Had such a nice time relaxing by the river watching the Head of the River and enjoying unlimited Bellini's. The food was great and the staff very professional and friendly. Quite tempted to come along to the next one on the 19th haha.

Recently attended a meeting event at Star and Garter, hosted in a small private glass dining room. There were only 6-7 of us but the space was good and AV was provided. Venue is modern and well laid out, food and refreshments were good with staff attentive and very customer focused at all times. What particularly struck me was the view... Wow! Directly onto the river. The big talking point at lunch was how amazing his place must be on boat race day ...think we'll definitely be back socially at this time.Only thing I did t get to try was a charcuterie and cheese board ... This is something they are famous for! Definitely next time.

We attended a wedding here which was quite fun! The drinks were excellent (got to love a good Pimm's Cup!) and the food was very good for the event. Nice views of the river and the Putney Bridge and there is a small area downstairs where you can sit outside.

This place is always dead unless here's some kind of event going on by the river. They have a great selection of cheese boards and wine though, and you're guaranteed to get a table as there's very few other people there. Today when we visited, the service was pretty shocking. We ordered a cheeseboard and wine and when the wine arrived, it was just plonked on the table so we poured it ourselves. It took forever for the cheeseboard to arrive too...although the place was virtually empty. We didn't pay the service charge, as there was little in the way of service!

I was at the Star and Garter Saturday night with a group of friends, the atmosphere was great and the bartenders very friendly. I was taken to the Star and Garter by my partner. We had booked in but when we arrived there were only 3 other customers in the building, none of who were eating. The bar/restaurant area seemed quite clean but being empty had zero atmosphere. The place was decorated with empty bottles of champagne and did have a Whetherspons feel to it. We ordered Sunday lunch, one salmon one beef. It was possibly the most dreadful Sunday roast I have had in a long time. Flavourless, cheap, tasted microwaved. To make things worse it cost us £15 each. We quickly ate our meals and left. We were going to stay for the cheese but whole experience made us want to leave as quickly as possible.

This restaurant/bar was recommended, so I rallied my colleagues and off we went to the Star and Garter! I should have known when we arrived and only two small groups were there just having a drinks! All other restaurant tables were empty at 7.30pm!We booked well in advance and the table was ready when we arrived. It all looked promising when we arrived. The waitress was polite and we placed our orders! After waiting for over an hour for our meal, we all were annoyed and hungry. Two separate waiters came to ask if we were ok and when we said it was taking too long for our meal, the waiter made a sarcastic remark about catching the fish and getting it ready! I was not amused. At no point did any of the waiters apologize for the slow service! To their credit they did offer a bottle of wine as we complained twice about the long wait. But, never again. The food was mediocre and definitely not worth the wait! The company made the difference!

I have been to Star and Garter a few times over the last few years and I'd noted things had gone a bit downhill. However, a recent trip at the weekend and all seems firmly in the past. The staff are all friendly and knowledgable, with nothing seeming too much effort. The place seems a lot fresher than before and a lot cleaner. They do a great Sunday roast, I had the beef which was cooked perfectly and the waitress was charming.Good wine list, although could do with a few more additions. We opted for the Barossa Shiraz which you don't always see on a list these days. Then there's the cheese room, lovely selection from across Europe, must be tried! This place certainly seems to have turned a corner based on some previous reviews, keep up the good work, we're sure to return very soon.

This is the place to go for a posh G&T. The trouble is they don't really serve anything else. The Monkey 47 served with plum is the best on the menu, but a treat at £9. The interior is trendy wine bar, but I'm more at home at the cosy Half Moon down the road. It lacks atmosphere as it's often quiet, while on a sunny day, the Duke's Head next door will be spilling on to the river.

I've been going to Star & Garter since the 90's and It was a great pub back then. I haven't returned there for a long time until my last trip to the UK when I noticed it's not a popular place as it used to be. This last time I didn't try any food so I can't make a comment on that, but I really enjoyed going there after so many years. The location is perfect: opposite the River Thames and on summer you can have your pint on the outside enjoying the whole scenery. Bring your friends and spend a late afternoon there, you will understand what I mean!

Family dinner last Saturday, hard to recommend much about this place ... it doesn't know what it wants to be. The menu is disjointed, they have a cheese and ham cellar and everything they serve from this section of the menu is first-rate, I'd quibble whether a splodge of Branston pickle belonged on the Spanish board but overall, great jamon, chorizo and manchego. The rest of the menu is circa 1970 and my plaice goujons tasted like they'd been in the freezer since then. The main courses were very ordinary. The service is all over the place, main courses were brought in the midst of us eating our starters as they had a large booking in the venue upstairs ! Then, the music went on ... so loud we were all shouting to make ourselves heard. A few of the well-heeled locals started dancing around the bar which felt odd. The Star & Garter is like it's playlist, hardcore House music followed by Chas and Dave ... seriously !

I booked a table for 13.00hrs Easter Monday for 4 people on or about April 10th. Couldn't wait to show off a bit of 'my' neck of the woods to my friends. Two of which travelled from North London, and the other travelling in from Surrey. I arrived, no greeting, and there were only three guest in the place (plus 2 staff), one of which was one of my guest. I went up to the bar to ask where our table was. As the waiter showed me which table I could have (basically any one I wanted, the place was empty except for the 2 others), he said did the guy I spoke with when booking nearly 2 weeks ago tell me that the kitchen was closed on Monday!!!!!!I appreciate that it may close on Monday's, but I was furious!!!! Surely the guy who took the reservation realized it would be closed. Who ever deals with the bookings would have noticed that there was a lunch booking for Easter Monday, and as a courtesy ring me to say the kitchen would be closed. None of that happened, so I was left at the last minute to try and get a table for four on what turned out to be a very nice afternoon along the river.I still haven't received an apology from the pub, and as a result I certainly won't be going back there. There are far too many places that would like the business to go too than flog this dying horse. Yes, the cheese and wine rooms look impressive, but if staff don't know the opening and closing days of the establishment, it raises questions in my mind as to exactly what do they know?So my advice would be to double check any bookings, and challenge the staff. Don't assume they know what they are talking about.

A lazy Sunday stroll slong the Thames with a friend and we found this place. We were intrigued by the cheese room advertised outside & ventured in. A lovely warm welcome and great food. We couldn't decide on which cheeses to try and the knowledgeable staff member was so helpful - reality felt that he wanted us to really enjoy the experience. Nothing was too much trouble . The atmosphere was lovely - wish I lived closer & then I could visit a lot more often but will definitely return on next visit to London

Me and my partner decided to have a meal out here after seeing the very appetising menu on their website. We booked a table for two on a Friday night. We arrived, no one greeted us at the door and the place was empty. Really bad sign on a summers Friday night! We had to go to the bar and ask the bar staff (only one person serving) where to go. He pointed to our reserved table. This was the best thing of the whole night; our table! We had gorgeous summer evening views of the river Thames. A waitress came and asked if we wanted drinks. We had a gin and tonic each. We were never given a dinner menu until we asked, which was after our drinks. We would of asked earlier but no one was around. At this point I suggested to my partner we just pay for the drinks and go somewhere else (which is a first for me) he said let's give them another chance. He was very hungry! We finally got our menus. They were pretty empty. This menu wasn't the full, tantalising menu we saw on their website. I was convinced this was a mistake! There was about 4 items to choose from on each course; pretty dull options too. When the waitress finally came back I actually quizzed the menu and the response as to why the menu was so sparse was because they had cheese. LOL! Anyway, we ordered a starter each and a main course. At this point we still weren't asked what we wanted to drink or even seen the wine menu. Our starters came. We ate them. We were very hungry. We eventually had to flag down the waitress to ask for the wine menu. We finally managed to order a bottle of white wine, which arrived at our table already open and wasn't asked to taste. Our mains arrived. I had a generic chicken tomato thing and my partner had a steak, which was so over done. He asked for rare. I couldn't finish my main it was so bland. My partner forced to finish his. Like I said he was hungry. Eventually the plates were cleared and we managed to ask for the bill before the waitress disappeared again. The bill was pretty pricey for a terrible night out. We will never go to this place ever again.

Just back from a long leisurely lunch in a small group (nine). The Star and Garter is a lovely venue. It is very easy to get to from either Putney station or Putney bridge tube, and beautifully located right by the river with a few tables outside. The decor inside is lovely. "shimmering" is the word that comes to mind. I'm giving the Star and Garter five stars for the following reasons. If you like cheese or charcuterie, or both, there is the most amazing cheese room in the bar. If you don't like it, be warned, you do get wafts of cheese smell! If you don't know what to choose, the waitress will put a little selection together for you. There was a good selection of food from sharing platters to full mains, lovely puddings. At out table we had baguette and a trio of dips, very good, the cheese platter, more than one person could eat, and it got the thumbs up from several others! We also hd crab linguini, apparently lovely, vegetarian risotto, chicken and butter beans. Puddings were very generous. There was a good choice of teas. We were well looked after but also left to chatter and take our time. The staff were friendly and helpful and the food costs reasonable.A great place to eat, drink or watch the boats go by.

We held our London engagement party here a few weeks ago. The staff went out of their way to make it as stress free as possible - the management made sure food was all pre-ordered and it came out at the right time as per my request. We had a great area near the fireplace and the large windows overlooking the river with plenty of tables and chairs if you wanted to sit. The party platters had plenty of food for 6 people (each platter) and were reasonably priced. There is a great selection of wines from all over the world to suit any budget. We partied from 4pm until it closed and were very happy overall with the excellent level of service and the space we were assigned.

The food wasn't too bad - possibly a little salty but then again many restaurants are. The thing which promted me to write this review was just how bad the wine menu was for a pub which advertised an excellent wine menu. Every bottle I asked for was miss-sold. The ages of the bottles delivered were often only 1-2 years old when the menu suggested they should be 4-6 years old so for example The Chateauneuf-du-pape, Domain Mont Redon, 2006 was a 2010 bottle. This is such a rip off at £38 a bottle! This wasn't the only example - infact in about 5 bottles I had my eyes on they were all too young and the prices didn't match. WATCH OUT!

Had Sunday lunch there today. Tried to book the Duke's Head, but it was packed out, so came here instead. Mistake! Worryingly deserted at 1.30 on a Sunday afternoon. One member of staff was friendly, warm and welcoming. Nicely laid out bar with what looks like a cheese and cured meats room, so their sharing boards would be good. One of the bar staff was pumping the bitter pumps for the entire time we were there. Presumably flushing them out, but thought that would be done prior to opening.Three of us all ordered the Sunday roast; two went for lamb and one roast beef, at £13.95 and £14.95 respectively which we thought was pretty pricey even for the area. When the plates arrived, we were shocked. Couple of slices of meat, two roast potatoes, small Yorkshire pudding, few leaves of kale and a tiny serving of carrots and parsnips. It was like a kid's portion. We ate, paid up and left.First pub I've been to in ages where the roast wasn't a huge feast with a dish of veg on the side.Suggest you try the Duke's Head, the Coat and Badge or the Spotted Horse for a decent meal instead.

I visited this restaurant yesterday with some friends and it's the worst I've had in a long time and I'm not fussy at all! We had some beetroot and feta cheese salads, portions were a bit slack but it was tasty. Others had soup which wasn't very hot. Service was incredibly slow and we waited over an hour for our mains. Our waiter was running around the place and I think it must have been under staffed. We all ordered roast dinners, 6 of us. When they eventually came out, the bar man served them (not our waiter guy) and he just plonked dinners down on the table not asking anyone who was having what. they were not hot at all. We'd had enough by then as paying approx £14 for a roast dinner you expect better. We complained to our waiter and the dinners were taken back and they said they would be heated up....but when they came back out they were exactly the same!! I can't believe that anyone would re-serve such rubbish to good paying customers. At that stage we called for the manager, who could only apologise. He offered us a free round of drinks which we didn't avail of, we were quite hungry at that stage and decided to leave an eat elsewhere. To add insult to injury on the way out, our waiter stopped us and asked if we had paid for our wine. We had ordered and paid for it at the bar already. He could have checked this without asking us surely?! It just made me mad to be pulled up over it!!

Disappointed, we use to go to the stage door 20 plus years ago when the elderly couple owner the restaurant and it was beautiful, we have very good memories of the service snd food. Last night the food was disappointing, the sauté potato’s were greasy and my husband T- bone streak that he requested medium well was very rare. The service was slow.
