We went there on our two days off while being on tour in the uk. The place is just brilliant. The food and drinks are delicious, everything is new, modern and clean. Especially the two hosts Susanne and Alan give the Square and Compass the right spirit and a feeling like being home. We booked via booking.com but i’d recommend booking it directly (and enjoy a free breakfast). if you happen to be there on a monday night, you should join the open mic night and listen to local musicians while having a few draft beers.

This is such a lovely place to have a pub, peaceful overlooking fields and has a romantic air to it. Alan & Suzanne are very friendly and can’t do enough for you. Great if you’re just popping in for a quick pint or spending the evening listening to live music. The pub is dog friendly and have a dog friendly room if you choose to stay over. The bedrooms are charming, well decorated and very clean. All en-suite with an amazing shower. Breakfast is cooked fresh to the highest standard and I believe all local produce, which is close to my heard and a big tick from me.

We had a great stay at the Square and Compass, Alan, Suzanne and Lily were very hospitable hosts (and happily catered from my very fussy friend 😂😉) . The breakfast menu was reasonably priced and set us up for a day of sightseeing . The rooms are not huge but perfectly formed and had everything you needed. Would definitely return when in the area , even if it’s just to join in Sundays quiz. Thanks Guys .

Dinner here this evening with 6 of us from 10-77 in age. A really friendly welcome and a relaxed bar setting. Food was delicious, the pie of the day (steak and kidney) was delicious. Apparently it’s under relatively new ownership so definitely worth a try and very well priced.

Stayed for three nights on the campsite which is kept very tidy. Nice clean Toilets and showers at the pub open 24/7. Alan and staff made us all very welcome. Had an evening meal and Sunday roast which were very nice. Buses run into Bakewell and Matlock, and there are nice walksalong the river. Would definitely go back.

So nice to go back, there's been many changes for the better over the years, the square was my local, just a walk across the field behind. It's been over 35 years since I moved away, many fond memories of John and Jean the landlord and landlady of the 1980's

A good stopover site near Matlock. Well placed for Chatsworth house and Bakewell. A nice little pub with a campsite across the road. The owners are very welcoming and friendly. They only took over the pub in November and are making good progress to make this a great site. The campsite needs a bit of work. It's a basic site at the moment but has potential. There are 2 modern washrooms in the pub just for the campsite use. The site is great value for money at only £20 a night, I think this will increase as they improve the site.

We made a spur of the moment trip to Matlock Bath, as the weather is awful and stayed in a hotel nearby. We chose The Greyhound for food, because when we drove past it, it looked inviting. I'm so glad we had dinner here. It really was top tier and I was blown away with the quality of the food! I had the venison haunch and it was cooked to perfection, with a port jus and garlic mash - comfort food heaven!! The beer was good and the service was top notch too. We only visit Matlock Bath a couple of times per year but I have found our new go to for food and drinks. Thank you to all the staff and our utmost compliments to the chef and kitchen staff. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
