Spelt in Mid Devon

Came to Spelt for lunch and enjoyed the best steak I have ever had, my wife had lamb shank which was equally impressive. This restaurant was busy but cozy and the service could not be bettered. What more can you say except we'll be back!

The surroundings were calm & casual, more bistro than fine dining but the food was definitely first class! A small menu, beautifully executed. Delicious, inventive starter called a lamb scrumpet, has to be tasted! The main roast was plentiful with beef cooked to perfection & the pork was tender with crackling ,all served with plenty of fresh veg & extra gravy. The servers were all young, enthusiastic & knew the menu well. All in all, great value & will definitely go again.

The attention to detail and the quality of the food was perfect, the balance and presentation would give any fine dining establishment a run for their money! Staff are friendly, polite and busy! The ambience I would suggest is " rustic down to earth ,no frills...let the menu do the talking! " Where improvements could be made... 1. Serving wine, don't plonk a full unopened red wine on our table, where we check it ourselves and uncork it to breathe. 2.please increase the temperature a little,everytime the front restaurant door opens , it's a blast of ice! 3. Please, I'm begging you OIL the damm door!! 4. Put cheese and biscuits on the menu. We throughly enjoyed our evening and would highly recommend

A very friendly restaurant with a lovely menu. In our party we need requirements for a vegan. Gluten and dairy free and a changable teen, all requirements were met. There was even a biscuits for the dog. Atmosphere was welcoming looking forward to our next visit.

Good food, friendly staff, cosy place but needs better extraction of cooking smells. Came away with clothes smelling of deep fat frying (although this is not unusual for restaurants these days).

We had a top meat and vegetarian Sunday lunch today at Spelt. Highly recommended. Good service too.

A delicious lunch This was a lovely find whilst breaking our journey from North Devon to Berkshire. My husband had very green eyes whilst looking at my seriously meaty plaice, although his chicken fillet was equally delicious. The sides were very interesting with baked beetroot and feta and broccoli with chilli and almonds. It was obvious that this was a Very well run establishment from the many happy local regular customers. Thank you Very much 'Spelt!'

My wife and I were staying in nearby Heron House B&B, for two nights and while disappointd that the The Swan in Bampton was now closed its sister restaurant Spelt literary a few doors down from Heron House was still open and we decided to try it. We were not disappointed. Great well cooked and presented main courses, vegetables, and desserts. Good well proced wines . The restaurant is small with a lovely atmosphere, coupled with very friendly and polite service. We also had their take away fish and chips (as the local fish and chip shop appeared to be also closed), the following evening which were also great. The owner spent time talking to me while I waited for the Fish and Chips to be cooked. The tartar sauce was also freshly prepared. Thoroughly recommend Spelt.

We were really very pleasantly surprised by how good our meal was in Spelt. Both the starter and main course were excellent and the service was very good too. Highly recommended.

A really lovely evening at Spelt. The food was delicious and the service friendly. It is relaxed, but the quality of the restaurant is very good. Plenty of vegetarian options. Well cooked, tasty fish dishes. Dogs welcome. Although the restaurant is small, it is divided into 3 rooms, so we didn’t feel cramped. The parking is either in the high street, or a very close public car park. A good find in a pretty town.

Popped in for lunch but we hadn’t reserved a table, this was not a problem for the amazing staff, friendly and efficient service, we got a table straight away. Excellent attentive service throughout our meal. We had the Hake which was perfectly cooked with a delicious sauce and the risotto which was accompanied with beautiful roasted cauliflower. This restaurant is a credit to the wonderful staff and location, a great find in a friendly beautiful town. Thank you for an wonderful lunch.

Well done Donna - glad you've got your wonderful Sunday roasts back on the menu (just as good as the Swan). We had roast beef - really tasty meat and a good sized portion, a great selection of veg and a smashing yorkshire pud. A very relaxing lunch washed down with wine for me and beer for him. Good service too. What more do you need on a gloomy Sunday in August - it filled us up and cheered us up!!

We do lack pubs/restaurants down yir in Devon as many local establishments have closed. Spelt was recommended by close friends and neighbours and we gave it a shot earlier this week for my dear wife Sheila's birthday. The fishy food was remarkable and delicious. Service immaculate and attentive. The Hake fillet with Mussel and Prawn sauce was brilliant. Desserts et al 5*. We will definitely be back.

This is a great neighbourhood restaurant with a lovely relaxed atmosphere. The menu was short but all with fresh produce. Very reasonably priced with some lovely vegetarian choices.

Loved this place. I live in West Sussex. There is nowhere in the nearest 15 miles that can hold a candle to Spelt! Both the meat (steak) and the fish (sole) were exceptionally good!
