We were on our way to the Hare and Tortoise and noticed Soltan. We were the only ones there at a Saturday lunch time. We ordered a mix grill. The rice was superb, so was the chicken and the lamb but the beef was inedible - tough as old boots - I've read other reviews since and people have commented on exactly the same tough old beef so don't waste your time ordering it - if you are going for the mixed grill tell them not to waste their time cooking the beef or ask for more chicken or lamb instead. I felt the waiter was trying to overhear our conversation - he probably wasn't or wasn't in the least interested but being the only ones in the restaurant it felt as if he was staring at us - would have been much better if he could have got on with something instead of looking bored staring and wishing we could eat faster and get out! The beef and the atmosphere put me off going and it wasn't cheap either!

Big portions, great meat and fantastic staff. What else can I say. Garlic bread with mirza ghasemi was my favourite. This is the best Persian restaurant in south west.

Went with a Groupon voucher which was just as well as I would never pay the full price in this establishment. This place has now changed it's name to Soltan. The staff (2 of them) were very unfriendly and never once asked us if we were enjoying our meal (maybe they knew what the response would be). For the main dish the plate was cold and the food tasted very bland, certainly not what I was expecting from Persian cooking. Chunks of beef tough and inedible. The one half of tomato burnt and the "saffron" rice was a small dollop on top of ordinary rice. No deserts on the menu. We were given a dollop of ice cream and a bit of pastry. I wouldn't call this place a restaurant more a down market cafe with it's paper table cloth and paper serviette. This place had no atmosphere whatsoever. We didn't pay any service charge. Would not recommend this place to anyone.

We enjoyed some takeaway from here one Friday night. Service was prompt and portions were generous. The restaurant was quiet which was surprising given how delicious the food was.

My wife and I went there last night on a KGB Deals voucher. We didn't get any choice on the voucher but the food was absolutely delicious, especially the shish kofte (don't know the Farsi word), and the quantities ideal. The rest of the menu looked as though it would be really nice and interesting, as well as being very attractively priced. The "Persian green juice" drink was superb. I might have preferred more authentically Persian music but it was pleasant enough and contributed to a very peaceful, welcoming and relaxing atmosphere. We shall go back, vouchers or no vouchers.

I have been to 2 other persian restaurants and have really enjoyed the subtle spices and interesting flavours and was looking forward to a similar experience at Esfahan. Sadly this was not my experience. On the plus side there was a very warm and friendly welcome to, what appeared to be, a one man show. The person serving seemed to be doing a fair amount of food preparation too.We ordered 2 starters plus some garlic persian bread which the waiter proceeded to make by hand in a kitchen area at the far end of the restaurant. In all honest the bread was the highlight of the meal - it was delicious, freshly made and tasty. One of the two starters we ordered was not available so we had to change our order once the bread had been served. The hoummos was fine as was the aubergine starter but nothing remarkable. The 2 main stews were pretty disappointing and heavy. None of the delicate spice notes that I was expecting from a persian meal. Instead the taste was rather earthy and, in fact, not that pleasant although we did eat it.Such a shame as we were expecting so much and the waiter was certainly making a lot of effort to please us. Even with the tastecard discount this was not good value and, sadly, I would not return.

With its impressive website and reviews, and a friend living nearby who had been dying to try Esfahan for years but claimed she could never afford it, I leapt on a Groupon offer and travelled across London to meet up. First impressions, at the side of the South Circular Road, were not good with a large handwritten "Help urgently wanted" sign in the front window - but it spoke the truth in more ways than one. The one (charming) man server was busy vacuuming when I arrived - early for my reservation but well after opening time - so I sat at an outside table until he was ready to let us in and bring us drinks. He was thankfully underwhelmed by the two of us and only one other table of two plus a baby, so no complaints there. The food is another matter, even for a special offer it was skimpy and uninteresting, nothing like the build up on Groupon. The starters were bland dips and the main course platter of grilled meat was largely kofta (mince meat balls) with two tiny portions of chicken and solid meat (lamb/beef? too overcooked to be able to tell). He took away the bread left over from the first course so we had to plead for its return so we could fill up on that and a second bottle of wine. Most disappointingly, it was to my mind Lebanese food, with no trace of the Persian cuisine that I had expected and to which I had been so looking forward. I did try to look at the normal menu for comparison but was foiled in the attempt.I won't be making the journey again, there are too many much better Lebanese and Turkish restaurants near home - unless they get their needed Help, including a new chef.

I live in putney and this is a great local restaurant. Took my parents their for a nice evening out. The place has excellent food and that is really what you are looking for in a restaurant. The aubergine dish we had was out of this world, and the yoghurt is so delicious. I had a lamb stew that was very flavoursome. The freshly made bread was particularly moreish. The portion sizes are what you need for a meal. The service was fantastic and attentive. Our waiter was a very sweet guy, my mother and I took a real liking for a sour seasoning mix they use so he got some for us from the kitchen to take home. The only complaint is that the decor was a little shabby, but I am not eating the wall paper eh!

My wife and I have just got back from a Groupon deal and I am extremley disappointed! The "mixture of starters" compromised of four dips - two of which was yogurt with either cucumber or onions in, and one flat bread. The "mix grill for two" was to kebab skewers and a couple of peices of chicken and lamb, served with rice which looked like it had food colouring rather than saffron! And to top it all wfor desert we were given "baklava with ice cream" which was one stale tasting baklava piece and what tasted like generic supermarket vanilla ice cream. To add insult to injury we got charged the full service charge, despite only paying £20ish pounds for the voucher - this I will be taking up with Groupon.(And did I mention the music fit for a retirement home zzzzzzz?)

Paid £24 on Groupon for a three-course meal for two (plus a £7ish service charge levied on he bill at the restaurant). Portion sizes relatively stingy compared to other Persian restaurants and would have been pretty disappointed if we'd paid the full price of £56 for the meal.

I went to Esfahan on a Saturday night with 12 others, for a birthday meal. Everyone commented on how great their food was, the starters were really good! The staff were very freindly and accomodating, and the atmosphere was very relaxed. The corkage fees were also very reasonable, all in all, a really good find.I would definitley go to Esfahan again, and would recommend to others.
