I don’t issue many 5 star reviews, as my experience has to exceed expectations, which can be heavily influenced by the price paid. And even when I do rate somewhere as 5 stars, there’s normally something I can suggest could be improved. NOT SO WITH SO~LO ! It really was as close to perfection as you can get. £65 (inc. 10% gratuity) I think is excellent value for what we received. Firstly, this was a birthday treat for my 85 year old mother, who can often be a ‘difficult’ customer. She’s not as tolerant of insignificant issues that wouldn’t be a problem for most of us. Our hosts at So~Lo ‘handled’ my mother and her quirks, PERFECTLY. So, let’s talk about the food. I’ll keep it simple; * attention to detail impressive * well balanced 4 courses with the exact volume of food to satisfy all but the biggest eaters * friendly & professional service * VERY HIGH quality ingredients * I can’t recommend So~Lo highly enough and will be sure to try and visit again, for their tasting menu, when I’m back in the UK.

Absolutely FAULTLESS. I visited Solo yesterday for their Sunday lunch tasting menu and left on a warm and fluffy cloud of euphoria after an utterly delightful experience. I naturally had fairly high expectations given the restaurant’s Michelin star – but there are always concerns with Michelin places, will it be stuffy, will the service be a bit full on and intrusive, the portions too small, the food too fiddly? Also, as it was the Sunday lunch service, can a Michelin star place really differentiate itself from a decent gastropub at this time v an intricate evening tasting menu for example? The answer to that question is: YES IT MOST CERTAINLY CAN! The venue has a lovely ambience - lots of natural light but with what I would describe as warm and homely style décor. Classy but comfy and inviting and it was nice and toasty there on a cold, damp and windy day outside. Perfect. Also, the nicely cushioned seating was appreciated. The staff and service – exactly as I would have wanted it to be – warm, friendly, relaxed, professional, attentive, passionate about food. Very much on top of their brief and efficient but engaging and authentic people that made me feel at home. Also, they were close to hand when I needed something but not constantly coming to the table which is a bit of a pet peeve. Spot on. You would expect the bread to be solid, maybe a nice sourdough or what not but wow, I had never had bread like this before – it was a very light and fluffy focaccia type thingy with crispy outside crusted in some sort of malted poppy seed thing – sweet and savoury and buttery. Glorious. I expected that the Sunday lunch tasting menu would be a selection of quite small dishes like any other tasting menu and that there would be a question mark over how filling it would be but no, this was an absolute feast! A lovely fresh and zingy fish starter (trout, lime, dill etc), a beautiful caramelised pork belly type dish which was melt in the mouth but various other taste surprises popping up like truffle and celeriac - and a properly massive main of pink beef (there was also a slow-cooked shortrib type thingy underneath), roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, cauliflower cheese, carrot and the Brussel sprout had this amazing filling of something I’m not really able to describe. But it was a very welcome surprise. I didn’t think I would eat all of the potatoes but I took my time and aided by a generous portion of gravy managed to work my way through them to completion. Heaven. The dessert was a vanilla cheesecake which sounds pretty stock but it was nothing of the sort and there were lots of unexpected textures and flavours – a perfect portion size too which didn’t floor me before the 5 hour drive back to London. I wasn’t drinking as I no longer drink but there was a delicious selection of non-alcoholic cocktails which I very much enjoyed. The espresso martino and cosmopolitan were highlights. I live in London but I like to take trips up North fairly regularly to go on hiking trips to the Lake District, Scotland etc. I will happily take a lengthy detour on future trips to visit Solo. And the next time we are in Southport on a golf tour, I will happily drive us the 25 mins inland for a meal here. Exceptional. Last point: I can't believe how inexpensive it was compared to other Michelin places I've eaten at.

What a lovely culinary treat, if you want a fine dining experience with excellent food and service then sō-lō is definitely worth the visit. The restaurant was quite a drive out for us and in a village location, our only (minor) criticism would be that the ambience wasn't cosy/intimate.... more candles and low lighting needed.

We revisited today for the Tasting Menu, the ambiance at SoLo is relaxed, welcoming and highly professional without being "stuffy". The food was perfection, presenting the diner with visually enticing dishes with well balanced flavours and textures. The use of first rate fresh ingredients is reflected in the dishes. Watching the kitchen brigade working in unison to present the diner with an experience to be remembered for all the right reasons was fascinating. It is difficult to select individual dishes as being particularly good, they were all a gastronomic joy. As with all fine dining experiences this comes at a cost, but compared to others this seems reasonable and worth it.

Rebuffed from nearby Moor Hall for daring to book a table of eight for my 60th birthday, Solo welcomed us with open arms. We had an early slot, so on arrival it required a knock on the door to what felt like a homely country pub, more informal than some fine dining restaurants but suited the occasion. Family gathered, and from a comprehensive drinks menu; pre dinner drinks ordered, we perused the six course taster menu which on casual inspection appeared all fish, although the more informed amongst us promised meat eaters that the mystery hogget was in fact young lamb and not an ocean dweller. Seated at our table, the maitre d' doubled as the sommelier to introduce a lively glass of champagne which accompanied the first course. A perfectly cooked scallop paired with a cube of black pork bursting with flavour which was a welcome surprise having passed unnoticed at the earlier menu reading. Scottish Turbot followed, topped with a contrasting nori tapioca crumb, perfectly carved mini potatoes, girolles and a roe butter sauce which brought the dish together, although a splash more would have helped. The next course promised native lobster and it was difficult to dispel the unappetising image of fisherman on the Mersey, however, the lobster triumphed which was matched with a hint of strawberry, tomato and crunchy peas. The rose wine was also a splendid bedfellow. A big red wine arrived to accompany the mystery hogget which presented two ways didn't fail to dissappoint the meat lovers amongst us, although slightly let down as the course was not as hot as earlier dishes and perhaps the eight covers was stretching the kitchen, particularly as other guests had now arrived. An overly long break finally ended with the arrival of a vibrant strawberry dessert nestled next to a home made biscuit and boldy blended with a hint of rose, perhaps not for everyone. The final course, a delightfully light aerated honey moose perched on a baked pink lady apple, curiously joined with a superfluous bowl of bramley apple sticks but well matched with a creamy Hungarian dessert wine. Another long wait for the coffees which perhaps we should have forgone as they were tepid at best and if served in a thimble the espresso would still not have spilt. Overall the food was delicious with a clearly talented chef, although with the restaurant full, service dipped and a lack of waiters was apparent, slightly taking the edge off a star.

Visited on a Friday evening, only booked the day before and got the first seating. This is very reasonably priced for a Michelin starred restaurant, including the wine options. I was very impressed with the tasting menu. We opted for champagne and wine too. My favourite course was definitely the beef, but the scallop course was amazing. The service was great, very helpful and friendly staff.

Experienced a Sunday roast like no other! Service is exceptionally good, albeit not as rigid as other starred restaurants, which I appreciated, however at times it was difficult to get the staff's attention. Food was unbelievably good, best roast I've ever had, and the other courses were delicious. The quality of the food was really good, but we felt that the creativity and flavour exploration was probably not on par with other 1 star experiences available in the North West (there's one in Cartmel that comes to mind but I won't mention the name). Overall, absolutely worth it, super high quality food, great service. Paid around £100pp including drinks which is not bad at all for a starred restaurant. Look forward to returning for the tasting menu.

We went for lunch for the tasting menu: it was exceptional. The setting is lovely and the staff genuinely friendly. We loved that the tasting menu had six well portioned courses, as opposed to a larger number of smaller courses as many tasting menus do: with food this good, it's great to have more than a mouthful! Each course was interesting with flavours that packed a punch. The apple sauce with the scallop and pork starter was exceptional for example. The wine flight was also great: all the wines were interesting and paired really well. The cocktail menu (including non-alcoholic options) also had some highlights (the rhubarb and raspberry gimlet was delicious). Thanks to all: we booked very last minute on a random day off and drove from Huddersfield just for lunch. We will definitely return. One of our favourite restaurants to date.

All dishes of the taster menu were perfect, but lacked that 'wow' factor. Also the choice of dishes wouldn't be my first choice and in that order: 3 x fish, meat, fruit compote, cheese (optional) and icecream. Also, I requested gluten and dairy free, but one of the dishes contained dairy icecream, which caused some problems later.

This was our second visit to the beautiful restaurant but sadly we will not be visiting again. When my partner said he had booked our second visit for valentine's evening my first thought was oh no! to the waiting around between courses and the lack of staff to attend service. But hey let's try again with an open mind. (I kept my thoughts to myself) as the food was excellent. So let's try again. We arrived early and after a warm welcome we sat at the bar for pre dinner drinks. Once sat and initially served there were no staff behind the bar so my partner was unable to order the water we forgot to order and another glass of champagne. We waited to be seated. The food was fantastic and the 4 course valentine's menu at £98 pp was running smoothly until the restaurant got busy and the delays started. The wait for dessert was far to long. We had run out of drinks and so I asked to be seated back in the lounge bar (hopeing to get service) however no staff were attending and therefore we were still unable to order a coffee/drink until sat waiting ridiculously. We left eventually as everything was taking so long it ruined our evening. Although the food was excellent the lack of service completely ruined our evening. The billed was approx £350 of which £200 was for the 4 course taster and the rest on 2 x wine flights coffee and pre dinner drinks. The wine flight was dull and we were told there was no cheese available to order. Again I/we left completely deflated and fed up due to all the waiting around. We eat out regularly and sadly this is something we have only experienced at Solo. Not a feeling we should have in a fine dining restaurant of this quality. Please recruit more staff.

Solo is a Michelin starred restaurant and, as you might expect, the food is excellent. It is worth making a trip for its lunch menu, not just because of the food, but because it offers a superb value for money lunch. Admittedly, the choice is limited but for under £50 per head it really does deliver a great and affordable dining experience. The atmosphere is warm and inviting and the service impeccable. There is a very good wine list but very few bargains! In addition there is a small but imaginative cocktail menu.

First time visit for their set Christmas Lunch set menu. Blimey, it was fantastic! I opted for venison as the most "Christmassy" of the mains and it was delicious - probably the best plate of food I've ever tasted. The sticky toffee pudding was outstanding too. Service was attentive and perfectly paced. Venue was quite small and intimate but they haven't tried to cram tables in so diners have plenty of elbow room to eat and not worry about disturbing other diners with chatter or visits to the loos. Small car park at rear is a bit cramped with less than 10 spaces I think. 1 bay marked for disabled visitors. Can park on street nearby though. All in all a thoroughly relaxing and memorable visit. Will definitely return again.

A fabulous restaurant with a well deserved gastronomic reputation. The décor is simple and rustic and works well with the ambiance, and ultimately allows the focus to be on the food... which is the reason for coming to this excellent eatery! I enjoyed an evening here recently with food ordered from the al a carte menu. The Cornish cod was the standout for me, but all of the dishes were amazing... and if you do come to dine at this culinary colossus of craftsmanship, make sure to try the STP (Sticky Toffee Pudding). In a word - heavenly! The staff were both friendly and attentive offering polite conversation about the local area, the food and the array of wines and spirts available. We dined as a group in early March and as a couple in April. First experience I would have said was a ‘good’ 4 stars - worth another visit, but our second visit was much better and definitely 5 stars. The main improvement for us was the more experienced staffing. In a place like this, the waiters/waitresses should be expected to describe and explain the dishes expertly. We didn’t find this on our first trip (the girls were lovely but very young and shy about explaining what we were eating!) whereas the waiters went above and beyond on our second visit. We really loved the food on both occasions and the intimate atmosphere. Really pleased to have this place on our doorstep but would suggest an a la carte option as I’m not sure locals won’t return time and time again for a tasting menu. Lovely experience and hope to return soon. Thanks!

We decided to celebrate our wedding anniversary in style. A friend recommended Sōlō and boy am I glad I listened. The food was out of this world. Each dish clearly planned and executed with skill and precision. The smells, the appearance and not forgetting the tastes. Such masterpieces created from humble ingredients. The ambiance was nice and relaxed. The staff were 1st rate and we will definitely be returning. Even if its to celebrate it being Thursday hahaha. We were even presented with a signed menu from Chef to help us with our Anniversary celebration. Such a lovely (and unexpected suprise) Big thanks to chef Tim Allen and his team. I'm sure you will be earning your very own Michelin Star soon.

Hard to fault. Excellent food and service. Quality of less expensive wines are poor and better quality wines expensive. For the price I would have expected an amuse bouche and maybe one other course.

Great tasting menu. Service excellent. Have to admit that there were a couple of courses I expected to be challenging (deer and trout) but I need not have feared, they were all brilliant. I would prefer an a la carte menu but for a new restaurant, setting up in the slipstream of a pandemic with staff difficult to obtain - my view would be that they are getting on and doing it. Can't wait to see how it develops

Great little place near Ormskirk, and well worth a visit. However, the car park is a little tight, so if you go, book early! The food - which is the important part - is excellent and borders on fine dining. However, we did the 3 course lunch - and although delicious - the portion size could have been better. One teaspoon quinnel of cauliflower puree and a tablespoon quinnel of pomme puree weren't quite enough on the main dish. As for value, for the 3 course lunch the price per head was £35, which isn't bad but also not fantastic value compared to some. That said the food was excellent and worth a try. The tasting menu seems better value.

Visited on Thursday 24th Feb. Having tried the majority of fine dining across Merseyside looked forward to this new offering. So disappointed. There was not one of the six dishes served that were memorable in any way. In fact so forgettable that less than two hours after visiting my friend text to ask what was the third course!!! Forgettable, particularly the cod and deer both devoid of flavour and taste. Very dissapoin and overpriced for what was served. Will return to more reliable haunts of fine dining Lewrpool, The Art School to name just two. My advice go to them.

We went for the tasting menu. In general the food was ok. Really enjoyed the cod. Staff very attentive. Unfortunately some little things like the quality of the cutlery really lets down the overall experience which is a pity. Also, despite a significant makeover it still has the feel of a pub rather than a restaurant which again disappoints a little. On the plus side the staff are really attentive and friendly. Will visit again when the menu changes.

I visited Solo last week as a treat from my son,we visited Moor Hall before Christmas, and so we were inclined to compare it with that experience.Yes Moor Hall has 2*, and a higher price tag but unfortunately we were quite disappointed with our visit to Solo. Yes,a 5 course taster menu, but we found the portions tiny and forgettable. We both came away hungry, not what you want at a cost of £100 each with drinks. The service was good and courses evenly spaced, may be we should have studied the menu better,as there is a limit on what you can do with salsify, Cauliflower and rhubarb. I wanted to give a great review of this new venture in Lancashire, but time will tell, and in its present form with one small taster menu, will customers return? Sorry,We will not.

Firstly I sincerely hope this place survives as we need to maintain local businesses and employment. I think this is a brave move as the venue has never been successful over the years...pub,bar, restuarant, wine bar and bust. First visit and unfortunately my last. Let's be honest , it's expensive, budget on £250 for two diners with drinks. Service was unbelievably slow. Food is good but not exceptional particularly as we have Moor Hall on the doorstep. Would love to support this restuarant but it's not quite on the mark. Hopefully time will tell and it will either up its offering or adapt to the local market.

Excellent! Stopped here for a drink and a sit down after enjoying the beautiful canal that The Thirsty Duck backs onto. What an amazing place!! The location is beautiful, the staff are friendly, lovely and very helpful and the special selection of beers and larger are so very delicious; I've not had any like them anywhere else. We will definitely be returning to stay longer next time.

A great cafe to have breakfast. Many choices on the menu. I had eggs benedict which was delicious. My partner had an English breakfast. Both of us had tea to drink. There was an artisan market going on outside which was an unexpected bonus. The staff were great. There are toilets at the back of the cafe. There is a car park nearby. Which is free on Sundays. Well worth a visit.
