I visited Smokey Jerkey today, hoping to find a brief respite after the recent loss of my mum. Unfortunately, my experience there only added to my distress. I initially ordered food for my daughter and myself, but shortly after, I called my son who also wanted something. When I informed the lady behind the counter about the additional order, a man who came from nowhere suddenly intervened and said, "Oh, you are killing her." His comment made me feel like I had done something wrong, even though I was simply adding to my order, not making adjustments. The attitude displayed was quite unwelcoming and made it clear that they prioritize their regular customers over others. Regardless, I expected a basic level of respectful customer service. If that man owns the place, it’s disheartening to see how he treats customers. I've never experienced such a negative response to modifying an order at any other establishment. Even if they couldn't accommodate my additional request, a polite refusal would have been more appropriate. I didn't have the emotional strength to respond at the moment, given my recent loss. It's unfortunate that my attempt to find some solace in a meal ended in such an unpleasant encounter. I was a customer, and I deserved to be treated with respect, just like anyone else.

Definitely would not order here again. Rude customer service. Bland food. Small portions of which they failed to deliver items and refused to provide a refund or resolve the issue. Definitely do not order here.

Best Jerk chicken and Lamb in London

Jerk wings were bland and rubbery and tasted a bit burnt, fried chicken was soggy and oily, what made no sense is they kept the patties in a warm unit and not the chicken, they fried it and then microwaved it and it had no flavour and tasted like flour almost

Excellent value. Have only had the jerk pork but it is an outstanding dish, fatty and succulent meat levelled off with a roundness of spice and smoke (suspect allspice / pimento is part of the rub). You will struggle to find something tastier at the same price for lunch options.

As someone who has been coming here for 15 years it is sad to see the decline of Smokey Jerk. The food has completely gone down hill. The Jerk, flavourless no pepper. The pepper/jerk sauce provided has completely changed. Everything on display is burnt. The festival bun up. The macaroni, bun up. Everything is cooked past enjoyable yet big money is being charged. As a Jamaican I want unu to do well. Please appoint chefs who take pride in their job and aspire to cook food of a high standard we’ve always associated with Smokey Jerk. You are cooking food to sell, represent our country and yourselves. Rewind and come again.

I went here to get dinner for me and my wife. there were only 3 customers in the shop, but the service was so slow after 20 mins I was still waiting to be served so i left . The food looked tasty apart from the chicken wing's which were burnt.

Sorry to have to say this but came here as the jerk chicken was recommened but my experiance was terrible. We ordered 3 meals had to wait a long time and when the food eventualy came and we left to eat it it was cool or luke warm, we were given very little source and no salad. The worst thing was the vibe I felt which left me feeling uncomfortable to the extent I decided not to return to complain about the luke cold chicken....I certainly will not go again or recommend that anyone else go there.

I have a 5 star review with photos of food already below somewhere. Google won't let me edit it but I even spoke to the owner in the 5 Bells when he sold it. His family did an amazing job but new owners new staff are useless, service rude, food absent, this is just some frauds living off old name. PLEASE search by newest and do your own research.

This is my favourite take away been coming for years! I get the mixed jerk and lamb with rice and peas, staff always overflow it for me! Food is perfect and full of flavour. Love them!

This is our second time ordering and unfortunately the last Not only were we sent wrong items, we received burnt food. The curry goat was 80% bones and coleslaw portion wasn’t great. Extremely disappointing

Not as good as it used to be! It took me one visit recently to realise they kept the business name but are a complete different business. The food portions are much smaller for the same price and the homemade jerk sauce I used to love has been replaced by a ‘not great’ interpretation. Even if you call in and order be prepared to wait 25+ minutes (busy or not) as the staff move very slowly

I like to give restaurants a second chance after trying them for the first time but I just can't bring myself to return to Smokey Jerkey and risk being given rice that is on the point of turning (I put the leftovers in the fridge overnight and in the morning, my fridge reeked of off rice. The smoked jerk aroma coming for the takeaway fooled me into thinking I was getting the real deal. I was sorely mistaken. The jerk chicken and jerk pork were dry, tasteless and definitely not fresh which was more than disappointing, especially one of them was a large portion. And I went there on a word of mouth recommendation. I can only think it's been a while since they had eaten something from there. I didn't even get the salad but by the time I got my food, I couldn't wait to leave. To top it off, I felt as if I was keeping the person who served me from his business. I've been meaning to follow up with the owner(s) but I haven't had the chance to. Maybe lunch times aren't the best time to pick up a takeaway from there but that's still no excuse for the poor quality of food served. I should have followed my instincts and walked out when I saw the 3* rating.

I ordered off Uber eats the food was burnt and stale. I asked for white rice and they gave me rice and peas. The festival was hard and the planting was not edible as they were so hard. It nearly cracked my teeth. I will never order from this place again and advise you do not.

Born and bred in New Cross but left for the sunny climate of Camberwell. Always make an effort to some back as it's better than any Camberwell place. The jerk pork is immense. Here's the thing. Got there and was told the jerk pork wasnt ready. Respect that and appreciate the honestly. If it's not ready - it's not ready. Quick pint opposite and back for the most perfect brilliant jerk pork ever. Mention to the lovely front of house lady with the baby. Fantastic place. New Cross is lucky to have you guys. It needs a little more atmosphere. I feel like they could have put more salad on this and the man that served me seemed tired food was nice but definitely more salad also the 3 star hygiene put me off slightly

Omg the food here is absolutely bang on especially the jerk lamb and chicken!! Portion size is huge for the money and the sauce they put on it is amazing.. Home made I think. Either mild or spicy!! I got the jerk lamb, it was dry and burnt and the sauce has like a weird over seasoned taste with barely any sweetness. Fair to say I should’ve listened to the reviews. Also it seems like they just reheated the lamb and it’s been there a while. Freshly cooked lamb don’t taste like that but I can’t say for sure

This was sadly one of the worst jerk chicken and pork ive ever had. The stew chicken was sooo disappointing . Somethings got to change i think i really want this spot to be a great one and it was not at all. Hate to say it but avoid.

I had been a loyal customer since it opened ( probably about a decade) but something has changed. The Jerk sauce is not the same which was one of the main reasons I went back. The plantain and patties don't seem too fresh. They never have beef patties, so got the chicken but I didn't recognise the filling as chicken.

It is my birthday today and my wife ordered some meals from here (via Uber eats). The food was obviously stale. The meat was slimy and gummy while the rice was yucky. A waste of over forty pounds. 😡

Used to be a great spot that I loved, but now the food is average and the sauces do not taste even a tiny bit similar to how great they used to be. I used to recommend this place to everyone now I wouldn't, today I had my final attempt of getting my previously loved jerk lamb and took my first bite to be met with disappointment.

The mutton was tasteless and rubbery with no gravy the rice was super dry and crunchy! The plantains was super greasy, dry and cold! Extremely disappointed! Not to mention the forgot half my order I will never waste my money on this place again if I could give zero starts I would.

£13 for a hefty serving of jerk chicken, rice, and plantain that two people can share. Incredible hot sauce, and what a smokey chicken, as its name says. Clean place to dine in, but not quite spacious. Friendly service, the lovely lady gave us the additional hot sauce whenever we asked. There’s a lunch set menu for only £5 or 6 if I’m not mistaken.

RUINED THE SAUCE! I used to come here for their fantastic chilli sauce which was unique. The new owner has changed the recipe and no longer tastes as good in my opinion. Also they no longer sell it in bottles. This is a great shame since this place used to be among the best place to come for jerk chicken. Their regular jerk sauce is still OK.

This used to be one of the best spots ever. Been coming here for years from childhood days. Randomly driving past n thought i couldn't miss the chance. Boy was I wrong. From the moment i stepped in I knew there was something wrong. Cut a long story short the new owners have ruined this place. THIS IS NOT SMOKEY JERKEY NO MORE. They need to change the name. This is an abomination. Probably one of the worst yard foods i have had in years. Proper nasty. The service was the biggest shocker. The stinginess on the sauce is MAD. Don’t bother eating in cos they will give it to you in the take away container and act like its nothing. Smokey NEVER let that happen back in the day. To say I am heartbroken is an understatement. I just hope they change the name cos they shouldn’t mash up Smokeys legacy like this. Money grabbing wicked Jankro. GWEH

Sadly the place is no longer as it was. Stingy on the sauce, order recorded incorrectly, dry pork jerk. Being said would love to see these issues resolved and smokey jerky back to its former standards.

Both good and bad review. I decided to treat myself for once. Spent over £40. Didn't have the fish I ordered, Polite person called me to negotiate something else. I got ackee n saltfish instead & they gave equivalent costs for the fish (Callaloo, patty, squidge of macaroni cheese) Food tasted nice generally but very very oily/greasy. Everything spilt out of containers during delivery. I suggest changing containers to plastic with sealable lids. Oil was everywhere. Jerk port was too burnt to enjoy. Festival was hard and uneatable. (it was late evening so maybe we got the last bits of the day).

Portion sizes reminiscent of old. But sadly smokey Jerky is a merely a shadow of what it used to be. The previously renowned Jerk Pork was dry and lacked flavour. The chicken scared my housemate.

Where do I start. Placed order through Uber eat, waited 1 hour … went to the shop to cancel and reorder. Thanks to the tv playing loud music, my order was done wrong, as I told the lady what I wanted and got home it was wrong. Went back to rectify it, after that first hick up. Second time I return home, the white rice with the oxtail was raw loool. Rang to let them know, the lady asked for me to go back but after going there to rectify the first order I was deflated and said nope I won’t return. I use to like Smokey back in the day but my gosh… it’s a BIG hit and Miss. Make sure your check the food when they bring it before you leave. I didn’t even see the rice was raw because they covered it with gravy and the meat. Once I start moving the meat it was obvious the rice was raw. Good luck with your food from there!

Back in the day this place was banging, today the taste is a little bland, order doesn't come right, seems like not enough ppl working there so the wait is long and now a bit to prices. I ordered 2 large jerk pork meals with salad, a mixed jerk pot and coleslaw. I asked for jerk sauce on meal, this came to £35 Arrived home no jerk sauce, no salads on/ with either and no coleslaw. You can imagine how dry that turned out to be.

I ordered this as takeaway for lunch. The food arrived promptly and still hot which was great. Unfortunately this is where the good points end. As I've seen in the comments the ownership has changed and so has the food. I used to go to Smokey often back in the day, the food was on point. Not anymore, the meat was bland and tasteless. Chewy and tough. Really disappointing.

Jerk chicken with the rice and lashings of jerk sauce...absolute heaven. Flavours were unreal. Had a festival and some plantain too. lovely, Friendly lady serving. I will definitely be back when ive over this way again.

It’s an okay place, but in comparison to previous owners it was just alright. Before it was truly special, would say overall there are better options around.

Quite frankly I think the meat was off. The smell was absolutely rancid, the sauce has totally changed. And the new owner was rude and unapologetic. They don’t even make the coleslaw themselves anymore, it’s store brought. Sadly won’t be returning, used to be my favourite takeaway.

Since change of management/ownership this place has gone down hill fast! Prices increased food now tastes like it’s been nuked in microwave, never had bad meal in here in 12 years, chicken was awful no taste, and was tough to get off bone

£13 for a large box of mixed grilled meat, got the grilled lamb and pork. Really nice smokey flavor to the meats, the pork skin in particular had lovely crackling. Rice and peas were delicious. The jerk sauce elevated the dish, the chilli was garlicky with a light kick. Price is a little high, there were also some really tough bits of meat which is a little unfortunate.

Travel from North London 31/08/22 NOT WORTH It..The food has no flavour and the portions of meat were pure bone!!! The shop is probably under new management as it is a couple contrast to a few years ago.

Ordered curried goat, ackee and saltfish with dumplings for takeaway and didn’t have to wait too long. Dumplings were fresh and soft, goat was tender & spicy and the fish was perfect. Portions were generous and delicious.

I've been going to Smokey Jerkeys for 9 years and absolutely loved the food there. But about 3 weeks ago the management has changed and as a result sadly the food has now changed too and not for the better. I wouldn't advise going there anymore.

I was really looking forward to my food, due to hearing such great reviews, but I was disappointed, the jerk pork was so dry, no flavour and the rice was soggy. My partner brought this home and I ended up a little vex and not eating much. Always try and support my people's but this was not a good experience.

Talk about a hidden gem. Categorically hands down the best jerk… maybe even takeaway I’ve ever eaten. Although it looks like it’s been subject to a recent arson attack, this only adds to the charm of Smokey Jerkys. £9 for a large, stop it. When I say large, expect to be comatosed for the next hour. I come here once a week and am never disappointed . Lovely people and lovely food - a south London institution. Don’t. Miss. Out.

Finally went here yesterday after being recommended it by everyone in South London as the best jerk, and I wasn’t disappointed. The mixed lamb & chicken was delicious, hot and jerk sauce was just the right amount of heat. The two lads were lovely too. Absolutely faultless, defo my new go to jerk from now on!

The interior is minimal, and I don't mean in that Scandinavian way. It's a fuss free takeaway. I've heard rave reviews about the jerk lamb and I ordered it with the worry that they'd be out of it. Some places are like that, but I was in luck as the friendly lady smiled in recognition on my eagerness. I noticed they do a mixed meat combo, why not go for the jerk chicken as well I thought. I changed my order halfway through preparation and still she was most accommodating. I wonder why there are reviews where people moan about the lack of customer service at Caribbean eateries. I think it's a cultural perspective. A deep filled hot to touch foil container arrived on the counter with the choice of jerk sauce and pepper sauce. The lamb had layers of smokey flavour with each chewy mouthful. It was a winner and dare I say even out did the ever popular jerk chicken. The chunks of meat sat on bed of rice and peas with a salad tucked in the corner. The shreds of lettuce and wedge of both cucumber and tomato didn't add anything to the meal, instead I would have preferred coleslaw but I don't believe that had it. Price wise it was marginally dearer compared to other local places, however the food was great and so was the service. Don't miss that yellow pepper sauce!

Don't let the exterior of the shop fool you! Inside you'll find some of the best jerk chicken and pork with red beans and rice. It's my best find in Lewisham thus far and it's one of the most affordable too!

I cannot rave enough about the fantastic quality of Smokey Jerkey's food! It is simply the best and really delicious. The staff are also friendly and the prices are affordable and decent. The chicken, lamb and curry goat are my favourite with the rice and the sauces go excellent alongside. Craving it just writing about it, defo recommend!

Best jerk chicken that I’ve ever eaten. I no longer live in London, but I often think about Smokey Jerky. I haven’t eaten here in years, though I was telling my wife how good jerk chicken is and I thought I’d write a review for this place. Take me back! Absolutely the best Jerk in New Cross Gate and the portions are not shy and really goes a long way. Their home made spicy sauce is whomping good too. Try it you'll be surprised the value and taste.
