Good food, but took 30 minutes for 2 battered sausages and chips.

Love this chip shop, always fresh and well cooked, good value for money and staff always polite. Very happy indeed with all round experience.

Chips were cold. A long hair in the batter 🤮 Served by children who didn’t know what they were doing. Total disaster

I normally have no complaints about this place, but today the chips were dirty and not up to their normal standard. It was obviously by the look of them the oil needed to be changed as we even had burnt bits of fish ends in the chips. I don't know why the oil wasn't changed as given the state of the chips, it should have been obvious they needed to change it and clean out the fryer. I hope this was just a one off

Staff are always super polite and the food is always good xx

Have always found Smithy's fish and chips the best in Plymstock. Use them about every 6 weeks as a treat for our dinner. Never had to give a negative review

If is wasn’t for the staff member who served me yesterday evening around 19:20 on 19/07/2024 this would have easily been a 4 star review. However, after telling my friends how nice this place was, we were left with a sour taste in our mouth and we will not be using this chip shop again. After receiving several eye rolls and huffs and puffs as we placed our order, we’re told we had not ordered items, following another eye roll and a very poor attitude, she re read the order to me and realised this had in fact been ordered. I said it was fine and she then proceeded to continue her rudeness. After all of this, the bags were loaded without asking if we wanted salt and vinegar, I was not concerned, I simply asked if we could have salt and vinegar. The answer from the woman was a blunt “no”. The salt and vinegar was visible to us and one of the friends I had taken with us felt so uncomfortable she said she would go to the shop next door to buy salt. This was then followed by another eye roll and huff and the lady serving said “I can put it on if you need it” I asked to have salt on 3 of the portions of chips and salt and vinegar on one of the portions. This request made us feel very awkward as she huffed with every box she opened before proceeding to bang the boxes back in the bag as they were salted. The bag was then flung toward me with a “bye”. The food itself was nice, but this whole ordeal has made all of us decide that we will not be returning. If we had been rude or demanding, I would have understood this response, however, we had been in good spirits looking forward to a nice evening together as friends and had placed a large order of £40, only to be made to feel that we were causing a huge problem for this lady by placing an order. Such a shame that this happened as I had always been fond of this chip shop before.

Food was good and there is handy parking at the front of the store, certainly can't complain about that. The thing that has put me off however was the lady serving at the till. After placing our order and about two unnecessary eye rolls later, we got our food. We noticed it hadn't had salt and vinegar offered or put on, so we asked if we could get some, the answer from the lady was a blunt 'no'. We questioned this, being able to see they had some available, the lady then stubbornly applied these to our order. The attitude was so unnecessary and what started as a nice take away with friends, turned the mood sour. Certainly don't have the patience to go back and will use another local chippy next time.

My husband has just got home with my fish and chips that I was really looking forward to!!!!! I can honestly say the fish was disgusting the batter was rock hard and inside there was hardly any fish!! To be honest I am feeling rather sick and wish I hadn't eaten half of it as I did...... £9 disgusting for vile food. NEVER AGAIN will I go there....

Always used this chippy. However had a few poor takeaways. Just spent over £40 and was poor fish and tiny and the thick curry sauce was full of salt. Not going their anymore.

Formerly the best chipshop in Devon. They seem to have changed owners recently. The place has taken a nosedive. Soggy batter, tasteless fish and chips. We have been going to this chippy for many years, but we won't be returning after the ownership and product change. We're looking for a good chip shop.

Fish and chip takeaway. Was awful, over £17 for two fish and chips. Chips average but the fish was dire. Cold with soggy batter and I mean soggy. It went in the bin. I won't be visiting there again, and suggest you don't.

Food was good.mushy pea fritter was amazing. Nice lot of salt and vinegar and chips were good. I’ll pass next time on the sausage as the sausage was grizzly. Curry sauce was thick but tasty.

Had a takeaway here tonight staff were very young and need some training in customer service🙄asked for a couple serviettes and forks as we were eating in the car but told they don't supply either 😂 got order wrong so had to pay extra for a curry sauce that they had left off, fish and chips were OK but batter was soggy, probably won't use them again.

Previously had some lovely fish and chips, but had a bad experience today, waited 25 minutes for my food, extremely slow service (which was poor quality) only to get home and find that there was no lids for the peas and curry containers. The curry had spilt out. Why didn’t the girl serving tell me that there were no lids?? I Went back to the shop for a replacement curry, girl behind the counter had the audacity to give me attitude! This is what happens when you employ kids.

Had food tonight and they put tinfoil on the top of the peas and curry sauce and they fell in the bag when driving home and it was everywhere. Where have the plastic lids gone???

Visited tonight, and what a joke ! 35 minute wait for warm sub standard food. The young staff have no customer service skills , and it is no wonder the place is empty most of the time ! Awful

went in at 6.45 on a wednesday evening and ordered. Did not received my order till 45 mins later.The shop was very busy and there was only two young girls working,one cooking and the other taking orders as well as serving and giving out the orders.At one point there were 10 orders waiting and the young girl was still taking orders.The manager was there but gave no help to serve the waiting customers.So if you want a quick take away don't go to Smithy's fish and chips.

Batter very greasy on fish, the chips were like cheap oven chips but cooked in oil, very soggy, wont be returning, disappointing as it cost £20 and some has gone in the bin

Had several portions of fish and chip with mushy peas and curry sauce. The curry sauce was a bit thick but the rest was absolutely delicious, nicest we have has for a long time. Ours was quite a big order so was cooked fresh but will continue to use based on the meal this evening

Absolutely disgusting, burgers were dry, chips tasted like oven chips, staff not very friendly or organised not stocked up with sufficient food, ie run out of burgers early part of the evening. The amount of sauce on the burgers was insufficient, maybe try giving out magnifying glasses to see the sauce. Overall the worst meal I have ever bought. This was my first visit and also my last visit. It was not worth the money I paid.

Cheesy chip portion is too small, wanted a large but they don’t do it and won’t do it, only chip shop to not do an add cheese option which is a shame because we want to eat there but just doesn’t fill me up

The young Staff are lovely but the food is very greasy ,over priced and under cooked. Shame as the staff are friendly.

Chips were bland, undercooked and rather hard. The cod bearly had any meat on it let alone the disgustingly wet batter attached to it. The curry sauce was chunky and the man at the back treated his workers like absolute trash. Shame on him don't go here

It was alright - the fish was nice and good quality but small for the price, and chips were more like fries than chippy chips which isn't my personal preference (but my OH liked them)

This gets some bad reviews which it does not deserve. eg "No music while waiting" - true but so what its a chip shop not the 02 area. We had to wait - yep that is because they cook everything apart from chips to order. The wait is not excessive and it is a well organised ticket system. They could improve the mushy peas as they are canned and can be watery. They could order more Haddock as they often run out. There are other chip shops in the area and others are possibly cheaper. It is clean and friendly. Locals in particular vote with their feet and this is always popular and busy.

Worst fish I’ve ever had. Cod was probably re-used from day before, as I got there just after opening. The batter was double thick and hard to cut through. When I did get through it, there was not a lot of fish going on and it was all dried out. Chips weren’t normal chip shop chips, nearer to Burger King fries. 1/3 were very crispy. I will never visit there again.

Be very careful when the till roll is changed and your asked if you could repeat your order ,,,,you will be charged twice !!! I know that in these times a little ingenuity helps to make that little extra,,,, but ripping people off,, is not the answer. Small fish , overcooked.

I have been using Smithy's regularly for many years. It is close to my home and unlike the nearest competition has adequate and convenient parking. In the past the food has been acceptable, not fantastic but fine for a quick and easy family meal. On my last recent visit I was served two pieces of fish that by any standards were awful! Tough, chewy and hard, my wife thinks they had been kept from the earlier lunchtime sessions. Sorry Mr Smithy the price of fish and chips these days dictates that the quality has to be consistently good. The competition has won this round!

The fish was tiny and the chips were fries that were soaked in oil. Not proper chips. That's all I could taste. It was pitiful for £8/£8.99 I paid for it.. wasn't til we got home, that I opened the box and saw it and by that time, it was to far to go back. Threw 3/4 of it in the bin. Do not waste your money!!

Waited for over an hour for our order as there were only two people working and the girl with the nose ring couldn’t have worked any slower if she tried. Won’t be back would have been quicker to go buy and cook our own.

You need to order as soon as they open, then it's fresh. Fish left in the warmer and bought 20mins-30mins after opening, the batter tends to be tougher and the fish isn't so nice.

The chips were lovely BUT the medium cod was disgraceful! £5 for a small slither of fish. I cut the end and there was no fish in it, and when I cut it down the middle it was mostly batter with a tiny bit of fish. And the batter was very chewy and overcooked. Had this been refried this evening from left over cooked battered fish? We feel very let down and will not be returning.

We ordered Cod & Chips & Plaice & Chips , the Plaice came with NO chips and was SO overcooked it was like a piece of hard cardboard ,completely inedible Maybe it would have been better if your 3 members of staff hadn’t been larking about and concentrating instead of looking after their customers What a disappointment ,I do hope there can be an improvement in your business

Wow!!! Always the same no matter what you order. Don’t understand why when you go in for sausage and chips you still have to wait so long when the chips and sausage are already there cooked n just drying up!!! Dont go to this chippy unless u literally have time to waste- literally been waiting 55 minutes for a very simple/small order. Only one girl serving and one frying. Very long wait just for fish and chips, unacceptable. Need more staff!

Really, really fresh fish and chips. So hot and light, not thick or stodgy like a nearby chippie. A pleasure to eat, which we don't do often, but this is a real treat.

Worth the wait.....not the fastest service but worth waiting for freshly cooked fish and chips. Great value for money too !

Went to get a large portion of chips, went straight in and ordered. Service for everyone waiting was extremely slow and l waited 20 minutes for the chips before l asked the 2 girls serving if they would be much longer. They then served me straight away and they did apologise for the delay. The chips were obviously not freshly cooked and had been sat for a while and didn't seem like s large portion either. Very disappointing.

Cod and chips. Fish looked a bit small but this was deceptive, what it lacked in length and width was comfortably made up for in depth. Cooked well, batter fairly crispy. Chips were disappointing being on the thin side, not quite fries but I prefer a bit of weight to my chips. These were more like the chips you get at a late night take away. Plenty of them though.

There was almost more batter than fish. There were quite a few chips but they ranged from one to one and a half inches long! The taste of each was just "okay" but I don't know what was lacking. After saying , "yes, please" to vinegar, it wasn't put in the bag. It may seem wrong to complain but the portions are too big, as most chippys do sell! here's a photo of my order. All this, for one person! It was enough for two!

I ordered over £60 worth of food considering it was very busy the girls working there managed to provide my order with everything i asked for within 10-15, especially quick considering my order contained everything that needed cooking. The girls were very friendly and dealt with difficult customers very well. The food was good value for the money and tasted very nice. I definitely recommend.

El pescado y las patatas fritas son buenos PERO. 25 minutos para cocinar una porción infantil de picaduras de bacalao no es bueno. No sería necesario que un científico especialista en cohetes se diera cuenta de que cuando llega un pedido "diferente", lo llaman al cocinero, que puede obtenerlo en cualquier lugar. ¡Obviamente chicas jóvenes sin experiencia que han tenido poco o ningún entrenamiento!Para colmo, las patatas fritas y los guisantes blandos eran apenas tibios, bastante desagradables. Esperemos que el propietario tome nota de estos comentarios y actúe sobre ellos, ya que produce un buen pescado y papas fritas.

NO "CONGELADAS" EN CHINAS PRE PREOCUPERADAS, tal como se indicó anteriormente en la última revisión. Aquí y saber lo duro que trabajan para complacer al cliente.

Con otro cliente esperando en la tienda, pedí dos porciones de salchichas y papas fritas (ya que había una fila de salchichas ya cocinadas y esperando en el calentador), pero tuve que sentarme y esperar diez minutos después de haber pagado. Supongo que porque el otro cliente había pedido algo que tenía que ser cocinado, pero en lugar de inventar mi simple pedido, mientras tanto, la chica estaba agitando los pulgares hasta que hizo el otro pedido (que no incluía ninguno de los Salchichas!) Antes de hacer las mías. Fue ridículo. El servicio es muy lento y hostil. Entonces la comida en sí es aún peor, salchicha de sabor divertido (¿poco cocida?) Y papas fritas horribles; ni siquiera las virutas de viruta recién cortadas, sino los palitos grasientos delgados, congelados y poco cocidos, y todos los trozos desiguales también. . . nada de lo que hacer un chip de butty. No te preocupes, hay uno mejor a unos 100 metros de distancia.

Succulent fish in a light ungreasy batter yummy chips and large portion sizes even on the children's meal. Very happy customers who will definitely be back soon.

Went to this Fish Bar on New Years day first time we have been here all the rest were shut good on this one to being open chips and fish very pleasant will return when we next have some chips and fish.

Went to give this place a try again after a bad review still the same wish I never went back to see just plain dreadful I could go one but just dont bother!!! there is better just across the road, dreadful chips fish with some kind of strange batter??? should have taken it back for refund when I got home but live the other side of plymouth NEVER AGAIN

I must have gone on a bad day as I don't rate this place at all. Ordered cheese burger and chips on Saturday night, burger was already cooked then reheated in microwave so dry and hard like leather had trouble getting teeth in to it, gave up on that in the end. chips were stoggey and greasy to. Explanes why it was empty and one around corner was packed

Certainly not bad! The chips themselves can be a bit lacking, but the fish, sausages and portion sizes are generous. Cod bites were particularly nice.

Absolutely ridiculous wait for just three portions of chips. We opted for the chip shop as I thought it would be the quickest. Next door there is an Indian a pizza place and a Chinese takeaway quite close. I think it would have been quicker to go to any other place. Chips were overpriced and a small portion. There is also plymstock chip shop over the road which are much nicer but they had a massive que but we still probably would have been quicker. They run a ticket system so even though you just want chips you have to wait for the person in front of you who is having a sausage cooked. I've never known a chip shop work this way. Avoid avoid avoid. I certainly won't be back.
