Great choice of drinks. All the Beers are expertly kept and Mark is the fastest barman in the west! All the staff are great at what they do and good company.

This is in response the J B review below. Just a couple of points. We were a group of 10 people in a small room which had maybe a couple of spare stools after the three people playing darts before us sat. At no point did anyone come in the room looking for seats. There was no communication from anyone until the young guy snatched the darts out of someone hand and said “darts over we need the seats” there was really no need for this action (perhaps if he wasn’t sat on the other side of the bar drinking alcohol then the customer service we received would have been better. It was me that approached the bar, I asked the guy that had snatched darts from us “why” he didn’t respond to me, just pointed to another man. I assume this man was the owner who listened and said we could continue playing darts so thank you for that. We finished the game of darts very quickly and decided to go elsewhere for the next drink. I handed the darts back and said thank you. I think it had been made clear how everyone felt so there was no need to approach anyone before leaving. We had no intention of causing a scene so we just left. It could have ended very differently if a different character/s had been treated that way. Respect is all that was needed.

This pub feels like the heart of Ashbourne. Traditional, cosy, incredibly friendly and a fantastic selection of beer & wine. Fabulous service and the kindest locals; I’ve always been made to feel at home. My brother also LOVES the tankard glasses along with the real ales! Thank you so much and see you again soon

Some of the staff are very rude and the manager had no balls and sent the little goffer to take the darts because people were having fun. Shocking place

In a town full of pubs you may miss this great little pub. A proper pub with a warm and welcoming landlord, great beers and a friendly atmosphere. All the staff were great (yes I kept returning). Check out the Bill Bryson quote on the wall.

We dropped in for a pint before going for dinner on Sunday night. Good selection of beers in a friendly traditional pub. We went back later as they had a quartet playing some enjoyable folkie type music. No cover charge. Well worth a visit if you like proper beer and good company.

Proper pub, great beer and landlord

We spent a great Saturday evening here during a short trip to Ashbourne. There was very enjoyable live music, and the landlord/barman gave particularly good service to our dogs, offering water and biscuits. We had a great evening!

Lovely old fashioned pub. Usually 4 or 5 real ales on offer, always served in tip top condition. Also locally sourced pork pies available, although they do run out quickly..

This is a proper pub. It sells drink but no food. It is traditional in every way and keeps all of its beers to the highest of standards. So if you value what I described it is an outstanding place. Highly recommended.

We had the great pleasure of dropping in for a drink after the malt whisky window display caught my eye. What a fabulous pub, a warm welcome was followed by a close examination of the long malt list by a certain lady. No problems for me as I just fancied a nice pint of one the fab real ales on offer. Malt decision made, it was served with a glass of water and a dropper to release the oils of the dram. That is a first and exactly how it should be done, top marks all round from us. A cracking pub, really traditional decor complemented by great service. What a shame we were passing through.

Always go to the Smiths tavern when visiting family. It's got a really super original atmosphere. Friendly staff and always a pleasant visit. Well worth popping in.

A pleasant pub in the middle of Ashbourne. Some good real ales but rather pricey I thought. Could do with an outside area at the back as there's no room at the front. I don't know if they do food but something at at reasonable price would be good. Pleasant landlord and, I suspect, an equally pleasant clientele.

Charming little pub, I’ve lived in Ashbourne on and off for most of my life and only discovered this place recently when I started going to the Peakland Players acting workshops and some of the group went here afterwards. Friendly staff, good selection of beers and no loud music. Now my go-to drinking spot in Ashbourne.

What a find! Can't quite believe how i've not noticed this gem of a real ale pub over years of visiting the Peak District. Traditional interior, friendly staff and a cracking selection of ales from the local area and further afield. With folk and games nights, this place is clearly a community asset. Always a gud pt in a grt location

First visit to Smith's Tavern. We had friends visiting from Canada who were interested in different beers. They were offered a taste of all the beers on tap before choosing their pint! Very impressed. Couldn't have been more helpful.
