Shu Restaurant Belfast in Belfast

We had our wedding reception at Shu on 17 April 2025 and it was the best experience we could have ever imagined. The drinks reception and canapés (in Jul's), the wedding meal (in main restaurant), the service, the bar staff were all outstanding. We partied on afterwards in Jul's with both a live musician and a DJ and had the time of our lives. The food was above and beyond anything that would be expected at weddings and we were treated like VIPs the whole day and night. The staff couldn't do enough for us, special mention to Adam, Johnny and Cara. Lots of our guests described it as the best wedding they had ever been to. All of this and unbelievable value for money. Thanks Shu for making our big day so perfect.

Have a delicious roast Sunday lunch here last week. The restaurant was busy and had a nice buzz about it, but not too noisy. There were 2 children at a table near us but they were well behaved, although I don’t think it’s the place for younger children. The food was delicious and good value for money but you need to be hungry as portions are large. My significant other had smoked salmon as a starter, then we both had the Roast Chicken Sunday dinner. It was absolutely delicious, roast potatoes and parsnips with half a chicken and lashings of gravy. Puddings were also delicious and we couldn’t resist them despite being quite full. My other half had the pavlova which was nice but meringue rather than pavlova which should be soft and chewy in the middle. Nevertheless he managed to clear his plate. I had the sticky toffee sundae which was fabulous. The little squares of sticky toffee pudding hidden under the ice cream and toffee sauce were absolutely perfect and full of toffee flavour. I recommend this to everyone and can’t wait to go back again.

Thanks to all at Shu, but particularly for the service upstairs in the Clubroom today. We had a big family birthday celebration. The service was attentive, they were helpful with all the arrangements with cakes etc. and the food was lovely. I’m sure we’ll all be back again!

We visited Shu for a family birthday celebration. We were in a private room upstairs. We were to be seated at 7.15 in anticipation of the main guest arriving for her surprise. She arrived around 7.30. Our orders were finally taken after we went looking for the staff at 8.30 and starters arrived around 9.10. Even then they didn't arrive together and mine was finished before others had even arrived. Another 45 minutes passed before the same debacle of mains not arriving together. One of our party ordered steak (£7 supplement) which was cold, got sent back and was still cold. All the food was tepid at best. Desserts followed a similar pattern of arriving after a long wait and not arriving together. We had some elderly ladies in our party who were cold in the room and had to order tea mid courses to warm up! We had to go find the serving staff for any requests and the whole experience was extremely below par for the standards they seem to set themselves. They took the wine off the bill but not the tea and soft drinks. To be honest I don't know what would have been adequate compensation for this shambolic display. I will certainly never be back nor will anyone at our table and I will certainly not be recommending Shu to anyone I know.

The food was really great, we had the monkfish, steak and lamb. As well as some delicious starters and desserts! The staff made sure we were well looked after even though there were a few really large groups! We thought we had booked into SHU but were seated in the downstairs area "Juls". It had a slightly different atmosphere with music with quite a loud bass. Not sure if the music was turned down or we got used to it but wasn't noticeable after a while!

Fabulous evening at Shu on 23rd December. Food and atmosphere excellent and manager Rebecca - superb as always - ensured we had a fantastic evening. Afterwards, downstairs at Jul's was the icing on the cake. Huge thanks to Rebecca and the team. Late to the party but this is our now our new favourite place to eat out!

Food was good but poor service and rude staff ruined the experience

Went for a Christmas Eve lunch today and had an unexpected visitor in our side dish in the form of a maggot. When shown the maggot in the side-dish, the restaurant discounted the £355 bill by £4, which was the cost of the side-dish. The Christmas Eve Shu lunch had become an annual family event until today. We will ‘wriggle’ off somewhere else next year. Extremely disappointing. Perhaps a visit from food safety is in order?

Visited for a staff christmas party cannot recommend enough! Cannot wait to return. Cocktails food and service 5stars!!

Went to Shu a couple of days ago and it was more than I expected. We were catered to by a lovely tall girl called Sarah who made our experience perfect. Incredibly welcoming and friendly and made no fuss with helping with my partners dietary requirements. The food was very nice and the drinks were a treat. I'll be sure to return with my next visit to Belfast. Thanks Sarah.

We went to Shu Restaurant while in Belfast as it was recommended to me by a friend. My expectations were exceeded. Our server, Sarah who was also from Cork was brilliant! She was very accommodating, humorous and a credit to the restaurant. We had the Salt and Chilli Squid and it was flawless! We will definitely be coming back the next time we are in Belfast. 👏🏻

Trying to be something it's not! ordered Ravioli, £20 for 5 pieces. Was unfortunate that I had to complain about the portion size. Downstairs is also very cold.

Large party attended Shu for a special family event with young kids. ordered food half hour after arriving, waited 1 1/2 hours for food. Food was extremely over cooked. No apology was given when poor quality food was mentioned. Poor manners about party arriving at different times was mentioned even though we were different families arriving no later than ten minuets after booking time. Wouldn’t recommend this restaurant and wouldn’t go back.

Brilliant restaurant. We were in the downstairs part of the restaurant and loved it and hit Sat night happy hour too. Staff were lovely too.

Had a wonderful anniversary dinner at Jul’s in Shu. Special mention to Sara who went above and beyond with complimentary bubbly and special dessert! Service was outstanding all night, wonderful atmosphere with live jazz by accomplished performers. Food was out of this world with attention to detail, and a great wine selection. Can’t recommend enough, thank you for the memorable evening.

Have been meaning to come to this place for years but never got round to it. We booked last minute and decided to go for the 2 courses for 19.88 menu. The guy who greeted us at the door was fantastic, lovely. He asked us about water then said our waiter would be along after providing us with menus. I have to say everything about our experience at Shu was so lovely until our waiter for the night began serving us. He wasn’t warm/friendly or attentive at all. We thought maybe we caught him in a bad moment. But I have to say he was nothing but rude and abrupt to us the whole evening. I wondered if we done something wrong. He never asked us if were we ok for drinks or anything once during our meal. When our food arrived, we didn’t have a knife for one of us and we asked nicely could we get one, he didn’t even respond and grabbed a knife from another table without even any apology or response and just sat it in front of us. I just thought his service was honestly terrible. The food was very nice and very quick though. But I honestly this treatment of us made us feel so unwelcome. I would never normally say this unless I felt it was really bad, it really left us feeling quite annoyed when we left. Everyone else who worked there seemed to treat us very well and was lovely though. Nice restaurant but the service really ruined the night for us unfortunately.

My partner and l went there to celebrate our anniversary yesterday evening. From the moment we arrived to the moment we left the service was 5 star. Very friendly staff,special mention to the lady that was not in uniform,you brightened up the place. Now for the food..we ordered snacks,starter mains and dessert and l cannot rave enough about everything. Everything gets a 5 star(except for my mains 4star). Very flavourful and tasty.Our favourite parts were the appetisers and desserts but honestly everything came together so well,absolutely delicious.Kudos again to the very friendly and customer aware staff l will say my pina colada was a bit stronger that lm used to so l had to have loads of water coz lm a light weight.Otherwise we cant wait to go back

We recently had our wedding celebration in the boardroom upstairs and I can’t recommend shu enough! The food was delicious, the service was amazing and we all had such a lovely time! Thanks so much 😊

When we first walked into shu to view the venue we knew then and there this was the place we wanted to spend our wedding day with it's absolutely beautiful decor and wonderful vibe. We then were introduced to the impeccable Adam, who brought this unbelievable energy and excitement for organizing our big day and you could tell he has such passion for the work he provides. On the day it ran perfectly, Adam was never far but always in the background making sure the day ran smoothly and ensuring everyone was happy. Which mission accomplished. The food was out of this world, a wonderful selection , presented beautifully and tasted incredible. Hats off to the chefs!! I also had made a request to Adam for a special dessert to honor my late grandad, which on the day he surprised me as it was on the menu named 'The Hugh' I thought the day was emotional enough but that just melted my heart. Including a massive thank you to Adam, two other staff members stood out to me. Unfortunately I didn't catch theirs names but first the beautiful waitress who noticed when I ordered the curry wrapped my dress in about 5 napkins to protect it, I loved that little touch and the photos are hilarious, also the bartender who poured our last cocktails of the night, so lovely and didn't make us feel rushed. A big massive thank you to all the team at shu for their hard work. Our day wouldn't have been so special without you. Alice and Chris

Still on of my top 3 restaurants in Belfast. Food is fab but staff are hands down one of the best in this wee place. Highly recommend for dinner with friends or that romantic date night.

Lovely venue, staff were friendly and attentive, and their food is delicious...but I have to say, for the money the portions are small. By all means go to Shu for a special occasion, but not to satisfy your hunger.

Terrible food ..very disappointed..waited long time .we were forgotten in the corner..kids meals were great .. should have ordered that..staff were mostly nice ..but definitely knew my food was awful...the wat they acted..tut tut.. would never recommend.

Tasty food on the Lisburn Rd Can’t really go wrong. The atmosphere is lacking, in that it is just like every other restaurant. Needs something special, by way of the chef or head of house or something niche.

If you want to have a delicious meal in Belfast, this restaurant is a good address. We were there with seven people. The service was attentive without being intrusive. The dishes we ordered were beautifully presented and tasted good really tasty. The wine list is extensive. An overall recommended restaurant. Not cheap!!

Updating the review: since the initial feedback below, the restaurant manager was kind and proactive to reach out to doscuss our feedback. He was very receptive of the feedback and provided great customer service to make amends. We had dinner at the restaurant last night and it was lovely, back to the Shu we know. We had a squid and crispy duck starters, cod and fillet steak for main course and a pavlova desert to share. The steak was delicious and the garlic that came with it was so creamy inside. Champ was great too. The service was very good - thank you. Initial review: I booked this for a birthday celebration, which happened to be on Sunday. Since we sat at the table it took the staff about 20 minutes to take our orders. We even went to say that we're ready to order, but were told that someone will be with us as soon as they can. As part of the order we asked for 1 small glass of wine. The waiter came back to say that the manager said it is not possible, but we can take 1 full glass and 1 empty glass, and split the full glass in half... It took them another 10 minutes or so to bring our drinks order. All this time we just had water and butter on the table. There was a table next to us that had finished their meal and left, no one of the staff came to clean it for at least 40 minutes! Our squid starter was nice. The bread was nice and home made too, even though it was meant to arrive once the order was made, but arrived just before the starter, about 30 mins later, which was too late. We ordered lamb, pasta and kids chicken goujons for main. I asked at least 3 times to take peas out of the lamb, but lamb arrived with peas. Pasta wasn't great as bread crumbs were added on top, which destroyed the dish, and chicken arrived when we were already in the middle of eating our pasta and lamb, and was also quite dry. Someone from the staff was organizing the cuttlery, between that, and people talking, it was too loud around the restaurant and the music was barely there. All in all, I started having a headache, everyone was frustrated and hungry, and we couldn't wait to go home. We didn't even want to get the dessert. Deeply disappointed with such an experience for such an occasion. Their main courses have always been a bit funny and hard to choose from, but now the service is also the worst I've seen in years!

Fabulous food and service in a beautiful restaurant

Dined for the first time on Saturday with friends and we were not disappointed. Staff were very friendly and attentive without being overbearing - Claire was wonderful! Many choices on the menu and very reasonably priced. I chose the chicken and it was beautifully presented and the flavours were divine! Will definitely return and recommend to friends and family.

Splendid 2 Course Lunch meal here at Shu! The interior looked and felt grand, and the staff were attentive and caring. The dishes we got were: - Steak Tartare, Hanger Steak w/ Potato Salad & Horseradish - Caesar Salad, Tomato & Basil Pasta w/ Chilli These dishes were amazingly seasoned, and delicious. Apart from the Caesar salad, which was alright, its presentation was nice though. On to the steak tartare; it was an explosion of flavours. The steak was fragrant and creamy, and the capers, and a sort of citrus/vinaigrette sauce that binded the tartare literally balances the whole dish. The hanger steak was cooked beautifully! Immensely flavourful just by itself with the sprinkle of salt, but a bit of horseradish brightens the flavour. The potato salad on the side is great too, but it had a heavy flavour of dill and mustard (seeds). I loved it, but may not be your cup of tea. DO NOT MISS OUT ON THE PASTA. It may sound simple but it is hands down the best tomato & basil pasta I’ve ever had. I normally would not order a non-meat meal, but I would’ve gladly swapped dishes with my partner. Lovely fresh flavours from the herbs and the tomatoes, and surprisingly, such a nice fragrant flavour of the chilli without its spice. 15/10! Worthy of the Michelin guide award.

The food and service were delightful. We had whole plaice for our main course and it was outstanding. The service provided by Emma in particular was excellent. We will definitely recommend Shu to our friends and family and plan to return in the near future.

Had dinner here last night with a friend after a recommendation from a local. It was a beautiful restaurant and the food was spectacular. The cocktail menu was impressive and service was wonderful. Highly recommend!

Was here for a wedding reception at the start of June and could not recommend it more. Juls bar was incredible and staff were so friendly and helpful. Food upstairs in the main restaurant was so delicious and the maître D' was very professional and helpful, nothing was too much trouble. Cocktail staff were also so helpful and served drinks quickly and efficiently. Even on the way out the maître D' personally thanked and said goodbye to everyone. Honestly, best experience of a wedding reception. Would highly recommend for any occasion

I went for my birthday the other day and I was not disappointed. The food was really good and the staff was friendly. Our waiter was very helpful with recommendations and even brought out a little birthday treat. Recommending to anyone that stops in Belfast if they want something a little more classy. 💜

Outstanding value. A place to try out. We had a lovely Sunday lunch as a party of four. Thoughtful and professional service. Interesting and tasty menu. Calm atmosphere.

Had heard great things about Shu and have to say that I was quite disappointed. Feedback was emailed through to the restaurant, the manager was keen to get further detail but then no follow up. Wanting to celebrate, I booked something a bit more special. Our aim was to have a relaxed cocktail, a bit to eat and relax. The team were more than friendly but unfortunately everything was brought out far to quickly, we were half way through our cocktail and nibbles when the main was brought out. With regards to the main, the steak was nice but the chips where as though they had been cooked previously and reheated and the pepper sauce was cold. Usually we would sit on after but we were keen to leave by the time the experience was over.

Sunday lunch with brothers this afternoon. Nice table & attentive staff. Sadly the food was disappointing. Tuna tosta very chewy & tasteless. Returned my roast chicken as the skin was anaemic looking with no evidence of being roasted and the flesh around the bone was pink and uncooked. When my meal was returned I received 2 small slices of chicken breast obviously cut from the original but less than half of a breast. Really disappointing.

If you like waiting an hr and 15mins for your main course this is the place for you. I ordered roast beef with the option of pink or done, I went for pink my partner for done both were well over cooked and dry there wasn't a bit of pink in my meat. My daughter had a choice of mash or chips and peas or broccoli she chose peas and mash. She was served chips with broccoli. The service wasn't very good either, out meat was brought out and it took about five mins for one bowl of vegetables and one bowl of roasties between two. There were two adults and three children after 40mins I had to ask the waiter to lift the wine glasses as we had our drinks and it wasn't wine as the table was crowded. For the price and service and quality of food, I don't think I'd be back.

Deserves to be among Michelin destinations!

Food was quite nice. One member got a very small piece of roast beef for their mains , more like a childs portion. Not worth £23 quid ! Service was slow, younger staff quite heedless, didn't seem to be able to read the room at all . Wine, way over priced, senior waiter (bald guy with dark rimed spectacles) was all fired up at the beginning of our time there, went down in everyone's estimation by the end of our meal, his manners and attitude was very poor . Didn't even bother to ask us how our meal was ,nor did he say thanks when we paid and left him a tip. Four of us went for a meal, and only two willing to return. I think there are better establishments in Belfast which has better food and definitely better trained staff .

I was really looking forward to trying this restaurant and I wasn't disappointed. The only thing I would have to say is to have more flavours going on the plate. Adam was amazing, such a lovely gentleman and a credit to Shu a very professional service! Also Carlos was very attentive and very professional. What lovely staff they have at Shu.

I was invited to a dinner at Shu two weeks ago. We had a nice round of drinks followed by starters, main course and dessert. The main course (palaice fish) was the best and I highly recommend it! The onion parfait starter was the next best. Dessert (apple caramel meringue something) was too sweet for my liking. The place was a bit loud that night. Our server was extremely nice though!

Very good food, more of a fine bistro though, rather than fine dining. Thus, prices too high for food/menu on offer i.e fried chicken and Panna Cotta

11 of us went for dinner on Saturday night in Shu. It couldn't have been better. Our waitress was lovely, the food, wine and atmosphere were great. Would. Highly recommend.

We went for a work Christmas party and it was amazing our server was so friendly and fun (I believe his name was Brian) would definitely return.

This was my first visit, on recommendation of a dear freind. The pork belly was the best, the service fantastic and the knowledge of the wine list was the best of any restaurant I have ever been too. Just a lovely evening with great food, great wine and the most wonderful service.

Extremely costly compared to portion size

... the only downer - we specifically booked for the live jazz Sunday afternoon. They did 1 song then gave up due to technical problems 😔

Food nice nice but nothing remarkable. Waitress very abrupt. Very expensive for standard restaurant food. Shu used to be an exceptional restaurant, not anymore.

Had a lovely time. Has a special occasion but relaxed vibe. Set menu for lunch made it quite affordable. To be honest the mushroom pasta I had was disappointedly quite bland, but the server made up for it by giving me a sample of the curry which I should have had. It's my fault for being a vegetarian really

Lovely, well presented food. Staff were very attentive & friendly. No complaints at all.

Great service and an interesting menu - lunch a la carte is certainly worth your time. Ox cheeks with pasta and Pernod onions, confit duck leg with the smoothest mash imaginable and caramelised kale, and a wickedly indulgent chocolate ganache with almonds and miso. Wines are a tad overpriced for what they are but a great experience.

Visiting from Australia and was looking for a restaurant with great food and service and they definitely delivered. The food was delicious and the service is amazing! Highly recommended.

A friend took us to Shu whilst we were visiting him in Belfast, this is his go to restaurant and once you walk in, you could understand why. Decoration is simple, settings are comfortable and light, the menu is not over complicated and the staff are very friendly. The food is excellent, though with the steaks that we ordered, they hadn't quite cooked them quite right, still they gave us a a free dessert. I would certainly head back and try if I am in Belfast again.

Would have been 5 stars. But the heat was unbearable. No Aircon. Always a great experience here. Superb service all round. And the food never ever disappoints.

He sounds like an insufferable snob that wouldn’t be happy with whatever meal he received. I have visited this restaurant multiple times and their award winning food has always been delicious and the service has always been top notch with friendly staff.

Food is average. Same sauces lamb and duck. Similar sides. Everything tasted the same. Korean chicken starter was brutal. Squid starter was nice. Overall very average. A nice hand written 10% service charge will kill there business moving forward if the food remains that bad.

Had an excellent meal and thanks to our server on the day a very enjoyable experience, from wine selection to attention to detail with our food. It was a memorable meal and lost of interaction with our server with plenty of humour, just great!

Went for lunch with my wife. Got tricked into having the 'still' water, once I committed he mentioned the tap water. Used this technique on all customers. I felt the soup I had was over seasoned, didn't taste like potato and leek. It was lovely, especially the wee cheese scone on the side. My wife had the Korean Chicken, it's hot! We both went for the steak frites. Two options pink or well done. My wife went for pink, I went for well done as I didn't want to risk having any red in mine. Thankfully my well done steak came out with a bit of pink, it was lovely. It was smothered in pepper sauce. Maybe ask for it on the side as it's very strong (even without biting into the whole peppercorns. Again, it was but I think too much seasoning again. My wife loves this place, but I'm not sure if I'll be in a hurry to go back.

Really happy to find such an outstanding restaurant in the 'student' area of Belfast. Atmosphere was fantastic, staff were excellent, and the food selection and quality were really outstanding. This was a Michelin recommended restaurant in the past but certainly deserves to be given the accolade again given the quality of the food being presented.

Had a wonderful experience at Shu yesterday evening. Lovely fit out and it’s balanced internal layout leads to a vibrant atmosphere. One of the best lamb dishes I have had and the service was second to none. Cocktails and the DJ downstairs afterwards helped dance off the food. Highly recommend this classy restaurant

Another fabulous meal at Shu. Service was professional and attentive without being overbearing. I had the squid to start, chicken & risotto as a main and panacotta for pudding. All three dishes were incredible and without fault. A lovely experience, I’ll be sure to return soon.

Really good food! We visited on a Sunday evening. Service was attentive and casual. We ordered the chicken gochujang and gnocchi from the regular menu and oyster mushrooms and cauliflower dish from the vegan menu. The vegan dishes were the best we have had in S. and N. Ireland. Highly recommend!
