Shimla Spice in Coventry

I had not been to my regular Indian/Bangladeshi for a long time due to Covid. I tried their take away tonight. Very nice prawn puri starter and lamb tikka main + excellent sag aloo. Old reliable.

I’ve been a curry enthusiast for 30 years, and this place is in my top five ever. Seekh kebab and sizzling fish were both great, but the vegetable thali and the Chicken Handi were better still. I could have eaten another portion of the Handi, it really was outstanding - hot, slightly creamy, well flavoured. The naan was excellent, perfect balance between doughiness and crispyness. Good wine, good service. A must for any visit to Coventry.

Decided to give this place a go after reading the reviews. Ordered the chicken shashlick (lovely), mixed grill (good but dry) and the chicken tikka chilli masala (nice) + 2 naan breads and chilli chips. Would skip the chilli chips as it was just fries with chilli powder on. Service was friendly and good, spacious areas with comfy booths. Food took around 30 minutes to arrive but wasn’t totally hot. Paid £21 on the 50% off scheme for 3 of us and would recommend going to take advantage and try somewhere new.

We were actually planning to visit Shimla Spice on the day the lockdown was announced, so we didn't make it. Five months later, we are so happy that things are getting back to normal, and we could finally get to one of our favourite Indian restaurants. And the fact that they were involved in the half price scheme made it all the better!  It was good to see the place so busy, and the staff were a bit rushed, but we still got a warm welcome from the manager, who remembered our favourite dishes from previous visits. But we all decided to try some of the "Signature" curries for a change, as we have found half price encourages a bit of experimentation!. My OH loves their Pathia, but this time tried the Chicken Madhupuri, hot sweet and sour, which she said was even better. I went for the Chicken Tamarind, which was hot and sour and hit the spot. And our friend went for a mild curry, possibly the Bangalore, which he enjoyed so much he said that it was his new favourite. All three dishes came with plenty of lovely tender Tikka meat, and we all really enjoyed them. We also went mad and had a rice each, and my coconut rice was the best I've ever had, while my OH loved having a mushroom rice to herself for a change. We were all very happy with our experience, especially at the bargain price, but we will be back even when the offer ends.  

Regular for years. Took my girlfriend this afternoon for some lovely curry and a drink. Had a great chat. Lovely food and excellent service as usual. Thanks for the service!

Just had a meal here for 5 people and were very impressed with both the starters and main dishes and certainly went above and beyond nearby curry houses. The service was great with staff all very friendly and helpful, would highly recommend and be back again for eat in or take away option.

Been going here for years now (they were opposite the train station before the knocked it down)and never been let down. Service always brilliant and the food is perfect every time.

Welcoming and nice restaurant. Interesting menu with a lot of dishes to chose from. I went there twice and ateb two different medium hot lamb dishes. Very well cooked and presented. Would go there again when back in Coventry.

Highly recommend.We are regular visitors with either eating in or having a take out . The service is excellent and all staff and management are very friendly and accommodating. The food really good and cooked to your requirements ,whether you like it spicey or with a little less heat .The menu is extensive with some really lovely dishes on there . We totally recommend shimla . Give it a try! You won't be disappointed.

Highly recommend this place: food was fantastic : some unusual dishes that were just delicious. The staff and service was great/ really friendly. Just sorry didn’t find it when my daughter started university!

We have been regulars for many years and never found anywhere that comes near the wonderful food, service and family atmosphere you receive when at the restaurant. Highly recommend if you enjoy quality food full of flavour and service you won't be disappointed.

The food at Shimla spice is awesome & amazing. The owner ensures that you are happy with the taste. I would normally ask him to customize and he would happily do the same. Very sweet and down to earth person.

My family have been going here for years and years. The food is great and the service is outstanding. They do the best Madras I've ever had. My parents love the tikka masala. This place comes highly recommended.

Where’s the perfect place to go for a curry after a 100 mile journey back to Coventry? Well in my book it’s definitely Shimla Spice. Always a great welcome and great service, but the best part is definitely the food. There are the old favourites of course but also some different dishes to try. And what I really like is the fact that whichever meal you choose it’s always beautifully cooked, my partner loves a lamb madras and at so many restaurants the lamb can be quite tough. At Shimla it is always melt in the mouth.

Visited twice recently. On both occasions we had lovely food. Nice lamb dish and a chicken madras. Tikka starter, mushroom rice, and kemma nan. Friendly staff and good service. What's not to like?

Still the best curry in Coventry - lovely fresh curry , chicken sag & lamb taws & garlic nann. Can’t fault it - chicken & lamb so tasty.

Me and my partner tried this restaurant when we stayed at the Ramada hotel on the opposite side. The food was okay, just little thing let the place down like the chicken pakora tasted ready made. That curry it’s self was lovely.

How can a Indian restaurant have king prawns. Wanted a takeaway at 5:30 with my boys looking forward to a curry . Walked out of shimla and went to Akbar’s , our new favourite restaurant now.

Had two very nice mains and a side dish. Helpful staff with menu. Thought it was very good value including the wine list.

I've been there many times. Very nice food for a good price. The manager is very friendly. Special requests are no problem at all.

We wanted an Indian before going to see the Specials. I had seen a number of recommendations and saw the Shimla on the way to our hotel so went in.

Visited on a Sunday evening with a group of 5 adults and as per usual it was great. The customer service is always so good at this place and they are so welcoming and attentive. The price is very reasonable. We made a slight error on our order and they amended quickly with no problem when it came out, so thank you for that. Lovely environment. The food portions are generous and delicious. And many after eights at the end! We Will be back soon and would recommend to others as well.

Went to shimla on a Tuesday few weeks back. Me and the misses were starving so went for a quick meal. Got our drinks swiftly poppadoms we’re nice. BUT our order was not being taken , it wasn’t busy 20minutes went by. After another 5mins we decided to pay for what we had and walk out. The chap ther didn’t seem bothered. No wonder it’s not busy , went to Akbar’s instead.

Great atmosphere , staff were lovely and explained dishes we were interested in, remember this restaurant when it was up by the station many moons ago, and its still as good now.

An impressive onion salad with the inaugural poppadoms is always a good start. Nothing left on the tandoori chicken starter, tasty. Went for naga lamb main... asked for it nice and spicy but not too hot (between a madras and vindaloo) and coupled with the mushroom rice it was bang on. Wrapped up with a delicious light and fluffy garlic naan. A great Indian meal, absolutely recommended!

I came early this evening with my two girls.

Visited last night for a meal for my friend's birthday. As my friend is a regular customer, we were all greeted like old friends and received wonderful service. They offer a very good white wine which I've found unusual in most Indian restaurants. The food was delicious! As was the complementary coffee-liquor type shot we were all given in celebration of my friend's birthday. Thanks for looking after us, Jay!

First time in Coventry, read the reviews and decided to try Shimla Spice as it was close to the hotel. So glad we did! Lovely modern and bright decor, Staff helpful and friendly. The owner greets everyone which is a nice touch. We had the set vegitarian meal for two. The food was outstanding especially the aloo chat and the sag paneer. We enjoy it so much we may go again tonight.

Went to this restaurant last night. With daughter and two sister in laws.

Myself and my girlfriend visited here last night and had a great meal.

Shimla a now moved to Student area of City. First time visit for a while. Thought food was well prepared with a couple of different choices which we tried. Nice touch asked if we wanted a break after starters. Inside no frills and staff welcoming. Steep entrance for anyone in wheel chair. But no steps.

We found a complete new red and black décor at the Shimla Spice, together with a reminder of the original restaurant by the station, with three clocks with the times for New York, London and Dhaka. The new menu reflected the Bangladeshi link. We mostly stuck to old favourites, my wife with sizzling fish with the vegetable tray of 3 veggie curries. I tried the new Lamb Supreme, a traditional 'home style' Bangladeshi lamb with cabbage and green peppers. The lamb was beautifully tender and tasted great.

We were a party of eight so booked a table early on Saturday night, we were shown to are table straight away and served by a friendly and helpful member of staff, all of our meals were very well cooked and piping hot and very tasty, my starter of chicken chat was excellent but my Wife's main was one of Shimla Spice's signature dishes Keema Egg Curry and she said its the best curry she ever had! I tried it and will order this next time we visit. Well worth a visit we will be back again.

Decided to try this place as a few people had mentioned it in the past. Food was aversge & small portions.

Nice food not very big portion size which was perfect for me as I don't eat a lot but my hubby likes his food and would of like more.

We rate Shimla Spice as average. The food tasted ok and was served in good time. Prices are reasonable, but overall the experience is average and nothing special.

Read the trip advisor reviews and decided to eat here. Very close to our hotel. Everything was positive, excellent service, food fresh, well cooked and very tasty. Good sized portions. Nice environment. Would highly recommend

What a great find this place was!

We were a little hungry after a long day walking so called in here around 6pm. We were first there and the greeting was very warm and welcoming. Chose 2 chicken dishes, a rogan josh and a naga mirchi with a side of bombay potato, pilau rice and 2 naan. We had a pint of cobra each. The meal was so very delicious. We were wiping the bowls with naan to make sure we got every last morsel. Really tasty food. If we lived in Coventry we would come here time and again. Service was great and the place soon started to fill up. Fantastic food - thank you.

Visited this restaurant whilst in the area. It was early evening. It was quiet at that time so I wasn't too sure how good or fresh the food would be. When the food did arrive, I have to say it was very fresh, perfectly spiced. Just the way I had asked for it. Very pleasantly surprised. The waiter was very friendly and couldn't do enough for me. I got talking to the owner who also was very friendly, and made sure that my food was as it should be. During my time in there, a few more customers started to arrive, and the staff and the owner were very friendly to everyone. They had very good rapport with the customers,which I think is so important. I will definitely visit again when in the area next. Thoroughly recommend.

One of the best places I have eaten in and for takeaway staff are lovely just like the food 100%!!!!

Friendly staff, serving a quite traditional menu of quality Indian food. We have been several times since their relocation and it is now one of our favourite places in Coventry to eat Indian food

Me pareció que era la primera vez que visitaba aquí, pero el camarero me informó de que este restaurante solía ser situado junto a la estación de tren de Coventry. Recuerdo haciendo fila para entrar allí muchas veces después de una noche fuera. Así que he hecho en En por 18 años. El servicio era excelente y no me puedo quejar de la comida. Tuve una agradable calor, dansak verduras frescas con chili. Mi colega tuvo la carne thali que disfrutamos muchísimo. Definitivamente me gustaría volver aquí y probar algunos de los otros platos en el menú.

Went to Shimla Spice with my brother and his wife while visiting from Australia. As is often the case with exceptional restaurants the appearance from outside was nondescript, however, the food was not. We shared a variety of choices and every one was excellent. I especially appreciated the attentive way that the staff tailored the heat levels of particular dishes to the palate of the guest. If you live in Coventry or are visiting then this is definitely worth a visit

I ordered tandoori chicken as a take away - they tried to get me to order more, as when I came before I spent about £25.00 - but I refused. when I took the take away home there was two pieces of chicken! I was shocked it is obvious that the more you order the more you get. they just want to get your money

Been to shimla a few times now.love the food. But and a big but, place is too cold. It's tired too. Needs some tlc. Only reason I'm giving it 4stars is because it provides good food and service, two of the waiters where great, but the guy in the bar was miserable, think he is the boss, he needs a clean up, it gives a bad impression, I will be going back there in the summer as it's to cold in ther during the winter. And hopefully the owner will sort it out after reading this. Have a shave, have a smile. And keep it warm. See ya

I ordered a food to take out back to my hotel room. Ordered 5 vegetarian dishes from the menu, including a cheese and garlic naan bread (the other being Paneer Shashlick, Mushroom bhaji, Tarka dal and Pilau rice). Picked them up and met the owner, who was very kind and friendly. I was halfway through the food and everything had been fresh and delicious so far. I liked everything I had had so far. I saw there was a second portion of naan bread in the bag where the first one was, despite only ordering one, so I thought that was nice of them. I took it out and cut a few peaces off it, noticing it had a different filling, thinking it was some sort of a pickle or something. Took a bite of it and instantly released it was minced meat. I immediately stopped eating. I am a strict vegetarian and have been for years, but felt ordering vegetarian dishes from an Indian restaurant was been enough - without having to warn them. Never have had meat put in my food when ordering vegetarian food anywhere before. Called the restaurant to let them know - the chef thought it'd be nice to put in a Valentine's day extra for me. I got an apology and a promise for a discount the next time. Not sure why I would ever again walk into an Indian restaurant where the chef is going to contaminate vegetarian food by mixing it with meat-containing food.

Staying at the Ramada across the way, found this via a TA review and was not disappointed. Lovely friendly staff from the moment we approached from the street. I had Sizzling Fish, fantastic, lovely quality egg rice and bread too. all round fab. .....

We were up from London for a night,staying in the hotel opposite the row of restaurants. Having looked at the menus and peered through windows, we liked the look of this one best although only one other table was occupied when we arrived. We loved the handshake as we arrived and left. Service for poppadoms and drinks was fast and the relishes were generously sized. We were not rushed to make our food order and when it arrived it was hot and tasty and the naan was very light.

Stopped by the most appetising spot on the row and was not disappointed. Friendly and attentive staff who were happy to chat. Ordered lamb pathia with garlic naan - food was tasty and the meat was very succulent. I would recommend this place and would visit again.

Was in Coventry for the day for work, and came across this place. Food was great - carefully spiced, with layers of flavour, rather than just heat in a can. Good size portions: I won't need to eat tomorrow. Heartily recommended.

Food is top class and the service is brilliant. Had my first curry 5 years ago in the old spot by pur chance found the new spot.

Of all the Indian restaurants in the Butts, Shimla Spice is our favourite. It may not be the busiest, but that means you get dedicated efficient and friendly service. We visit quite often, in groups or as a couple, and have never had a bad meal there.On our last visit, our friends cancelled, but we carried on without them, and we are so glad we did. I had my favourite Lamb Kheema Bhuna, and my OH had the Chicken Bhuna. Both were perfectly cooked, with tender meat, and full of flavour. I was especially impressed by the tender onions in both curries. Too often these days, in several places we have been in Coventry, a perfectly good curry is spoilt by near white under cooked chewy onions. Not at the Shimla-they were perfect.My only slight criticism would be that the mint & yogurt sauce served with the poppadoms as a starter is a bit runny, and things can get messy. But that is only a minor hiccup in an otherwise lovely meal.     

We have dined here 4/5 times so far and even had a takeaway, to my mind this is one of the better curry houses in Coventry, easy to get to and parking available. I always have the chicken tikka chillie garlic with fries which the waiters call bubble and squeak, it has never failed me yet, my wife tries different meals with a plain nan which she also enjoys. The service is friendly and attentive, nothing is too much bother. I have one major gripe, A small bottle of Magners cider is £4.50 WHAT !!!!!, an issue I shall take up with the management on my next visit.

You can always guarantee a fantastic meal at Shimla spice. Fantastic, friendly staff who always come up trumps when your not always sure what you want to eat. We never leave disappointed and would recommend to anyone. Situated in a very busy location, don't pass by without giving them a try.

We visited with friends from Canada on Sunday night and all four meals from the specials menu were superb as always. Our friends were particularly impressed with the quality of their experience and due to the friendly service they can completely understand why the Shimla Spice has always been our favourite restaurant and continues to be so.

Always a warm welcome and delicious food. Deserves to be more busier than it is. Everyone should go here, it's delicious! The best curry in Coventry by far!

Saw recent review saying they had closed.It has reopened and is as good as ever!Try the specials menu -there are dishes on it that you don't see on most menu's and are delicious.

I tried to contact this restaurant all day on Friday 25th August via their 2 landline numbers, a mobile number given on their website and on their landline answerphone service and via their email. Someone did answer on the mobile number but denied it was Shimla Spice on 2 occasions. In the end we decided just to turn up only to find a notice on the door of the restaurant advising that it was closed down due to an issue with rent payments. Very disappointing that their website or their answer phone messages aren't advising customers of this!

Having known the old restaurant for many years I'm thrilled to discover these nice people doing business again. I don't need to visit to complete this review, it will deserve top marks and I'll be there as soon as I can with family to enjoy their friendliness and fine food!

The food was good at this restaurant and plenty of menu choices. Service was good and food was served quickly after our order had been taken. Restaurant was quiet when we visited. There were a number of cobwebs both in the restaurant and toilets. Cleaners need to be more diligent as this does create a bad impression.

Went for meal here and I must say it was very good not the usual watery food you get at most places which people think is good curry!! You could actually taste the different flavours in it. I had a lamb saag with naga and a boiled egg it was amaze I can't remember what my girlfriends was called but the flavours were so good. So all in all a great meal and the people are so friendly this will be my weekly Indian from now on. Cya soon

I lived in Coventry over 30 years ago and used to visit their former restaurant near the railway station, this visit to the city was an opportunity not to be missed for a walk to their new premises which, is only around the corner of the street from the house that I had happily lived in those years before. Food and service was excellent, courteous and pleasant staff, a joy not to have our good memories of years gone by of this establishment dashed by modernity, we made our way across the road for a drink at the pub where I met my wife, now that had changed, for the better we don't know, but the beer was ok...

As usual service is great, staff are really nice and very good, the restaurant is really nice and clean, would recommend the dansak, a personal favourite and have been having this here for years now, wouldn't dream of going anywhere else...

Great food, excellent staff, whether eating in or taking away. Service extremely good...food simply amazing. I reviewed this restaurant earlier in the year and found the food to be of excellent quality. On returning here with friends, I am happy to say that me and my friends found the food to be as good as ever. Definitely worth a visit if you great love curries.

Having been going to Shimla both when at station and since it has relocated for over 15 years.Food is always good (especially some of the latest additions to the menu).Jay and his staff can't do enough for you and can't recommend highly enough.
