Shimla in Angus

Visited with family as they had been recommended by friends. Huge menu and staff were very friendly and polite. Food was exceptional and all at a very good price. Great experience and would definitely recommend a visit.

Worst ever carry out. Nothing was what we asked for. Owner disregarded our comments. Will never order from here again. Waste of time and money. All food was trashed

This has been our favourite restaurant for years, but recently it has gone very downhill. The cleanliness inside the restaurant is terrible, we were given two high chairs both which were absolutely filthy especially under the trays, the silver ware was dirty and had to be exchanged twice and the floor in the toilets was that sticky your shoes stuck down! This is a huge let down as this was a highly rated restaurant for many years and by looking at the other reviews it’s not just the cleanliness that is the problem. This needs to be urgently rectified, with a deep deep clean, if this is how the restaurant and toilets look what does the kitchen look like!! 😫😫

Have used Shimla for years but not recently and sadly won’t be going back. Ordered a take away Saturday 26th March. Address taken but no name. Told order would be delivered in 45 mins. After 70 mins phoned and was told order wasn’t in kitchen so must be out for delivery and would be with us shortly. No address was taken to double check. After 1.5 hours phoned to cancel order, again no address taken and this time girl was rude, no apology given and actually hung up on me. Obviously order had never been passed to the kitchen. This could have been corrected at time of first phone call but poor customer service displayed instead. We will not be using Shimla again and will not recommend to friends either.

Two seat table in passage behind bar so all service was passing our table. We ordered poppadoms and dips …ok but nothing special. Mixed pakora for two and onion bhaji’s ….very greasy and just warm Lamb tandoori….got lamb tikka Cauliflower bhaji …..watery and tasteless Rice with fried onion…..this was ok Chicken Makhanwala…..they forgot to bring this ….then when they were prompted brought out the dish……the chicken tikka was watery and nearly cold…the sauce was a modified korma that tasted nothing like a Makhanwala…..and it was topped by some pretty tasteless cheese. They did offer to modify the bill but I refused as that wasn’t why I was making my feelings known….we paid full price and left….we will not be returning.

We ordered a delivery of 2 starters and a main meal tonight, although I phoned the order in at 4.40ish we received it approximately an hour later but the starters were cold and the main meal was look warm,

Me and my partner visit this restaurant often, great size portions, amazing food, good meat!!! Hard to find nowadays!!! Just saw some reviews saying customer service isn’t good, I have always found the staff to be really friendly and helpful, restaurant is beautifully decorated and clean also. GO HERE if you visit Forfar!!!

I’ve ordered curries from Shimla on two separate occasions, both times the food has been excellent. However the phone manner of the staff when placing orders is abysmal. Rude, forgetful and left me with no confidence that my order had been placed correctly. Had we not had such good food the first time we would have ordered elsewhere. Great food - have a word with the people you have answering the phone!

Ordered a takeaway on Saturday night to be ready for 17.30 but when I went to pick it up they didn’t have my order as the shimla app had broken. So after another 30 mins waiting My ordered appeared. When I got home the pizza which I ordered for the kids was meant to be half pepperoni and half just with cheese, but it was all covered in pepperoni. I ordered the mixed tikka kebab but was given a mixed kebab. So no rice or masala sauce. I was that hungry by that time I just ate it. I emailed them to tell them I was disappointed but have never heard from them.

After receiving a menu through our door (I am out of Forfar) we thought we would give this a try. Ordered a build it yourself pizza - Spicy Chicken, pepperoni, onions and peppers, doner, chips and cheese and veg pakoras. Doner chips and cheese were good as were the veg pakora but the pizza was horrible. They gave us spicy mince instead of chicken and the bases tasted like they were frozen bases not made fresh at all. We were told 30mins wait time but it was actually 45mins, then the delivery driver walked into the place and couldn’t stop coughing (no mask) then handling everyone’s deliveries without washing his hands, thank goodness we were to far away for delivery!

Phoned order in at 19:02, was told delivery would be around 20:10, phoned back at 20:45 and was told we would get a free bottle of juice and popadoms with our order ... finally received ( incomplete) order around 21:10..phoned again about the missing part of order to be told it was on its way... 20 minutes later it arrived, I had to reheat my meal twice. First and last time we will order from there!!

Ordered food for takeaway after restaurant reopened. Very helpful manager took order, and handled enquiries about allergies. Food cooked fresh and could tell from scratch. Pick up was easy. Bhuna and Balti in particular excellent. Tikka masala done special for a nut allergy and was enjoyed by my sister. Naan as gigantic and delicious as ever. Would definitely reorder again. Glad Shimla is back open!

The food was fine but the food was extremely late. When we called the reataurant they said it was on its way but it took another 15 minutes despite it being a 5 minute drive

24 of us descended on the Shimla for a 50th birthday celebration. Poppadoms and dips whilst waiting for our mixed starters, the followed by our curries, rice and huge nans Excellent service and very courteous staff as we were a noisy bunch. The food was superb. Take your own drinks with no corkage. Thanks for a great night. Recommended again.

We were at Forfar for three nights and decided on an Indian takeaway. We were recommended to go to the Shimla. The food is very, very good. The mixed pickle is hot and spicy. We enjoyed it so much we had another. I was actually born in Shimla before independence. I have eaten a lot of Indian food at home and in India and the Shimla is the best restaurant food I have ever eaten. No one who enjoys Indian food will be disappointed.

Korma and peshwari nan used to be brilliant from there, ordered this time, nan was burnt and flavourless, korma was mediocre at best, definitely gone downhill massively

I’m a creature of habit and always get the same dish. On two occasions I have had lamb that didn’t seem fresh from that day or just over cooked and crumbled as in no actual chunks of meat, All be it very tasty not what I expect. Naans can be improved but all in fine

Korma was ok, the garlic and cheese nan bread was bright green smelt off and didn’t taste good.

Food was warm not hot, the mixed kebab was 3 pieces of meat swimming in oil, the chips and cheese and portion of chips were also drenched in oil. Couldn’t eat the food it was a total waste. The delivery was over an hour and it says delivery time between 45min to 1 hour. Won’t go there again.

Dreadful jaipuri, swimming in nearly an inch of oil. Huge chunks of undercooked green peppers dwarfed the tiny pieces of chicken. Other curry was a tasteless korma, both served with cold chips. Will never order from this place again

I don't visit curry houses much as I am a keen lifelong curry home cook. This was to accompany my wife and a group of her business colleagues after a general meeting. Ten of us in all. Another large group were in and very noisy! Well, that happens but it was hard at times to hear each other and I did not appreciate the foul language from one of the men.The service was courteous and accurate and our meals took enough time to arrive to suggest kitchen staff were not just throwing ready made sauces together. I had a balti chilli garlic with chicken tikka as the meat and shared a garlic naan and pilau rice with my wife. Delicious and very garlicky! Fresh green chillies were in the dish but it wasn't too hot for me. All ten of us declared the food good and I would return. Not expensive and the offer of a drink on the house at the end a nice touch. Shame I was driving. Would eat here again and the staff do appear to be trying hard to make a mark. Rather a large restaurant space for a smaller catchment area? Maybe consider breaking it up a bit with a lounge area for before or after meal.

We were the onlu people in on a Friday night. The service lacked enthusiasm and the food was not good. The accompaniment with the poppadoms were not nice and 1 of the mains was inedible. Even tho we were still the only ones in the resturant our plates were not cleared and we had to adk for service to get the bill. Poor service, vety poor standard of food, and zero atmosphere.

Love the curries here & best of all, I love the staff are happy to cook things the way you like it. Love being able to take our own bottle of wine. All nice staff members.

We took family while visiting Forfar for what is regarded locally as decent curry house. The place was empty at 8pm but the service was good. Our disappointment was the quality of the main meals. Very little chicken and lamb in the dishes presented and the sauce on each was rather tasteless. This to the point where one of the group made comment this sauce has the texture of wall paper paste drying out. This all so different to the many curry houses we have visited in the south of England and India. Can it be called a curry ?

I reviewed the shimla before. Still the best curry in Forfar. I’ve tried others, but still end up coming back. Nothing is too much trouble to them. Usual massive Nan. Go try..

Had many a meal from here. Sit in and takeaway. I've never been let down. Best mixed Byriani ever. The owner is very welcoming and friendly. Would recommend this restaurant to anyone who likes a good Indian meal.

Have used the Shimla both as a restaurant and a carry out a number of times and the food is excellent. However the speed of service lets it down very badly. Had a carry out this week, phoned at 6.15 and was told 30 mins which was absolutely fine. Arrived at 6.45 eventually got food at 7.30. Got a bottle of juice and some poppadoms as an apology but still poor. I would have seen the point if they were run off their feet but there were 2 people in!!!

We had our table booked for 6.30. We didn’t get menus for at least another 20 minutes. It took over an hour to get someone to take our order and that was despite one of our party asking TWICE to come over. The waiter didn’t even have a proper pad and had to go and get more paper. We finally got our meal at 9pm - not acceptable. It wasn’t even that busy. Won’t be back despite the discount.

Just had our annual trip to Forfar to see family and friends and in 8 days managed to go to the Shimla twice. We have known the owner and staff for years and even though we now only see them once a year we are treated like long lost friends. This trip back to Forfar we managed to go twice. The food is consistently good, cooked fresh and generous portions. The nan breads are a must. We look forward to our next trip back to Forfar and spending an evening or 2 in the Shimla.

We had a retirement party in the Shimla and it was a fantastic success. 21 people split into 2 tables in the side room and we were served with a great selection of delicious hot starters to wet our appetites. The first table was then served their orders of rice, curries and, of course, huge nans and the second table was served their order only a couple of minutes later. All the food was hot and fabulously tasty and washed down with the beer and wine we had brought with us. The service for such a large number of people was brilliant considering the restaurant was busy with other diners. Tea and coffee finished off a wonderful evening. I have no hesitation in highly recommending the Shimla again for its fantastic food

Went for the high tea menu available between 5-7pm. Everyone enjoyed the food. Lots of mixed reviews on here however my family have used Shimla (and Manzil previously) for many years and are yet to be disappointed. Excellent food and excellent value.

Very salty. A vegetable curry with hardly any vegetables in it. Mainly just sauce. Chips were not great either. I was hoping to leave a good review, but I'm a bit disappointed really.

usually the food is lovely and to be fair it's never happened before. tonight I ordered at 6pm, food should have been here at 6.50pm. however I didn't receive it until 7.30pm. I ordered chicken pakora and prawn pakora. The prawns were lovely however the chicken was very dry and you can tell its not fresh. Very let down by the food tonight. When I called to see where food was I received a few grunts that it was on its way and no apology. However when the girl delivered my order she was lovely and said sorry I'm going to give it one more try but next time it happens I'm not going back.

Nice food but we were nearly an hour from ordering to delivery - which is a a bit longer than I would expect given that collection time was shown as 20mins.

The Shimla is superb. I use the restaurant and now the take away service. Best food in town by far and a friendly service.

Up for the football and feeling a bit peckish so I popped into the Shimla. They were doing a pre theatre so I took that. The meal was nice enough but not enough to be excited about.

Normally go here for a curry takeaway at least once a month and it's normally fantastic, but tonight's meal was almost inedible. Chicken was chewy and had an odd smell to it, masala sauce was completely tasteless and bland. Naan was good, onion chutney was so bitter so couldn't even enjoy the poppadoms. Really, really disappointing and will put me off in the future which is a shame as it's normally so good!

You don't get much food for your money but it tasted fine and the naan bread is awesome from here

Que es! ! ! ! O NO ES EN EL MICROONDAS) entonces para que sea mejor que él dice "si quieres un servicio de 5 estrellas ir a algún otro sitio "No de nuevo! ! ! ! En la tarifa que se comer comida casera a partir de ahora! ! ! El propietario podría tener algo que decir mañana cuando vaya a verlo.

He revisado la shimla antes y no dudaría en hacerlo. Nunca he tenido una mala comida. La comida es muy sabrosa y el personal es amable y atento. Simplemente la mejor casa de curry en forfar. Hecho. (Oh! Y el nan. . . . )

A disappointing experience. I thought I'd try pizza from Shimla as a change from my usual favourite - and I really regret it. The delivery person was not friendly but I could have looked past that if the food was good. Sadly, the pizza was similarly lackluster. My main complaint about the pizza is that it was bland to the point of being utterly tasteless. Everything from the dough to the toppings was just disappointinf. My toppings that included onion, sweetcorn, peppers and tomato - none of which should have been as tasteless as they were. If those ingredients were anywhere near fresh, then something is seriously wrong with your suppliers. Overall, I give this entire experience a one out of ten and will not be ordering from Shimla again.

We ordered set meal B asked for lamb Jaipuri got chicken, ordered chicken bhuuna which was awful and looked like a dogs breakfast. Also asked for the chicken bhuuna to be hot.... So mild I could have served it to a baby.

Order was collected at time set by restaurant. On getting food home discovered it was lukewarm and on calling the restaurant to tell them they argued it wasn't and hung up. Had to drive back to restaurant, where I again was not listened to. Eventually got a refund. As for myself I will not be back pretty disappointed for someone who has been a customer for years.

The food was really good , the only criticism I have is that on the menu each meal could have more explanation with it as i ordered a special korma expecting chips and rice and korma sauce but it was korma sauce only.

Cheeseburger had no cheese and mince from the pizza smelt really weird. Pizza didn't look like it had been properly cooked.

Cuando era la hora de liquidar la factura que trajeron más de un menú diferente con precios diferentes para el primer menú. . . Después de un 5 - 10 minutos finalmente trajo el primer menú. . Y había una diferencia de precios de ambos menús, no vamos a volver allí de todos modos

Everything was wrong what I ordered . Wanted to do pizza deal . One cheese pizza and the other spicy chicken with jalapeños. Ended up with a cheese pizza with chicken and a cheese pizza with jalapeños. Only thing got right was bottle of coke . Tried to phone and make complaint to get money back but it shut as soon as I ordered . Very disappointing and a total waste of money!!

Habiendo tenido una comida para llevar en Shimla en unas cuantas ocasiones decidimos caminar y sentarse, con botella de vino escondido en la mano la bolsa. Sí, es traer su propio lo que es una gran idea que puede al menos una botella de vino decente con usted por la mitad de precio. No tuvimos que esperar mucho tiempo para la comida para llegar y fue todo muy sabroso. Excelente servicio, personal amable y sin duda recomiendo ir allí. Sólo probamos un par de platos, pero lo que probé estaba muy sabrosa.

We were there last weekend for a leaving do party for 12. Not very warm welcomed looks like caring customer is a bit far for them.the lady waitress looks absolutely off and doing nothing. A very over priced restaurant in Forfar.

ordered take away on a week night , order taken quickly and was advised the meals would be around 30- 40 mins, a reasonable wait for food, Unfortunately we waited 1 hour 50 minutes, when food did arrive it was very hot and tasty, Nan breads are huge so only order 1 even if more than 2 people are sharing. very good meal but the waiting time was a bit too long

We had dinner here a couple weeks ago. The intention was to go for their high tea, but the choices were really limited (only 1 starter - no choice), so we went for the main menu. The curries we got were fine, but not outstanding, and overpriced. I would have preferred a smaller portion at a reasonable price. The naan, as everyone has said, are ginormous and that was the best part of the meal. The service was good, and we liked that we could BYOB.

As always food was amazing, the nans are huge and delicious. Can't wait for my next meal.

Charged delivery despite their leaflet stating no delivery charge for orders over £9.95 and charged 50 pence for using a debit card. Wont be using them again. The masala sauce was redundant as the meal come in a sauce. Definitely won't be using them again

Had the chicken pathia, with rice and a peshwari naan. Portions are incredibly generous (especially the naan), two of us couldn't finish the lot.

Ordered chips and cheese and a chicken kebab and they were both terrible. Chips were put on top of the cheese so it was just a congealed lump of cheese on the bottom with really dried out chips on top and the chicken was tandoori chicken which if I'd known I wouldn't have chosen. I've ordered curries from here before and they were good so it was a bit disappointing.

Starter of lamb tikka was tough and not cooked today. It the home style bhuna was fantastic, quick and friendly service.

When ordering a steak dish online there is no opportunity to inform the Chef of how the steak is to be cooked. A submenu offering a choice of Rare, Medium, or Well Done would allow the customer to make this choice. While the dish I ordered was OK, the steak was over cooked to my liking. I prefer a steak that is so Rare it 'moos' when I stick the fork in it. Also, as I did not eat in the restaurant I cannot give a genuine score to the question on 'Restaurant Service' accurately

The food tonight was not great at all.....

I am 61 and have eaten Indian food since I was in my teens. This is some of the best fresh and tasty food I have ever eaten. Every one in our group love the food at Shimla and we all highly recommend it. I go there every time I visit forfar and would even consider my 130 mile journey just for this food

Have used this restuarant for some time now and always have had an excellent meal. Restaurant not licenced to sell alcohol but allow to take own alcohol in. 4 course meal pre 7pm costs £9.95 so good value for money. Warning:- do not make mistake of ordering a nan each as they are huge!!

I was here at the beginning of the week to meet up with friends. The three curries we ordered and the two Naan breads were delicious. The service was very quick and friendly. We were all happy with our meals. Especially once guest who had never had a "British-Indian" curry before. He was most pleased that his first taste of one was a good experience. This restaurant does not have a drinks license, so guests can if they want, bring wine or beer and sit in the restaurant to drink it. For those of us who do not drink, there is a good choice of soft drinks. We had a nice meal here. Thank you.

Poor !!! Sadly the customer care was just plain poor!! We ordered our food and collected it only to get home to find there was no rice - who orders a curry with no rice??? Well, the staff there took no responsibility and refused to send their delivery guy out to deliver it! (We were just outside their area - it takes 5 mins to drive here ! they could have done so since they had made the mistake!) A big thumbs down - particularly because you were unhelpful and just plainly arrogant! Have to say tho - the food was excellent!

Large group of us, who regularly visit the Shimla. The food was very good, the service from the staff was good. Therefore we had and enjoyed en excellent get together.

Just back from our first visit to the Shimla, but I will guarantee you it won't be our last. Both my husband & I like Rogan Josh Curry, but we really have struggled to find a restaurant these past few years that does a good one, that was up until now. Both the lamb & chicken Rogan Josh curries were excellent. We also ordered a Nan bread and burst out laughing when we saw the size of the one the brought to the table, it was the size of a tennis racket ! and it was good. We didn't take our own drink but we will the next time.

We go quite often and the food is always excellent. the last time we went it was a friends birthday and nothing was too much trouble. Great food and great staff.

Popped in here the other night. It is not a busy restaurant and that might put people off - not us. There was only us and another couple. The restaurant is busy with takeaway orders though. The food is delicious and the service is excellent, nothing seems to be too much bother. We even brought our own alcohol as they are not licensed...bonus. Will definitely be back.

I wouldn't normally review a takeaway order. I felt on this occasion Shimla deserved the attention. Our meal was fresh and incredibly tasty I would say better than some that we have paid far more for in a restaurant. It was nice and hot and naan bread was huge, fluffy and soft. I will certainly use this takeaway again.

Always have a great meal here wether it is sit in or take away. Huge choice on menu, huge portions and the best naan bread ever. Friendly and accommodating staff.
