Shanghai Restaurant in Gloucester

Very small food and not great quality. Crispy lamb was inedible and the waitress we first had was very unfriendly and felt like anything we ordered/asked was an inconvenience. They second waitress and waiter bringing out the food were a lot more friendly and professional. Will not return unfortunately as had great experiences there in previous years.

Again, I've been really disappointed with the food having ordered a takeaway! There is absolutely no taste to anything, to the point where the chips taste the same as a chicken foo yung, which tastes the same as mushroom chow mein etc etc. The tastiest food were the prawn crackers. This is the 2nd consecutive meal I've had like this and will be the last time I eat here. It's not cheap in comparison and actually used to be really good value but not any more! Awful!

Food good, generous soup portion size, they didn’t take note of my request to remove an item from my main portion though so I had to pick through it before I could eat it.

Food was amazing, great taste. Only gripe was the curry sauce. £3 for worlds smallest portion, seriously not even 100ml per pot, everything else was great though.

Food was awful . We ask for duck enough for 4 people .it came out cremated and made 1 pancake . So order some more which came out uncooked (pink and soggy). Ordered prawns for all of us . The plate came out with 4 prawns on . It felt like they didn't want u to order more . I would never return here again !!!

Ordered a peking duck for me and my wife just as something to snack on in the evening was very disappointed seemed like they didn’t even try with the onion and cucumber slices. The duck was alright but not the usual decent duck we have had in the past from this restaurant. Probably best to visit in person.

Food is delicious, service nice and quick. Drinks are good but expensive (£3.70 for a pint or orange juice and lemonade, £4.80 for a pint of carling). Would recommend it, but be careful of the costs climbing.

Okay positives - food was great. Cant fault it - hot and tasted good. Had the special menu which is basically a slightly reduced menu still has about 70 dishes on but cheaper not including more expensive meats like duck or seafood. Makes sense! Service was good. Even though felt the staff given it was quiet could have prompted a bit quicker for more food/drinks. But no background music so could hear every conversation at the other couple of tables…. The negatives - the carpet! I don’t know what’s happened. But you stick to it everywhere - this needs urgent work. The place needs a general clean. The gents toilets smell was shocking - it smelt like the toilets of a nightclub at 3am! The FOH could do with a deep clean, seems like tables and bar are clean but all other details completely ignored. Finally, food hygiene scores. 3* on the door from May this year. Yet your advertising on posters that you have 5* like the pull up! I’m guessing this was before and hadn’t been updated but still should be covered up otherwise it’s misleading!

Food was hot when it came. Could have had a bit more flavour and spice in the food.

We came here for the yearly skittles meal and it was great would highly recommend

Good quality food & very nice delivery driver

I work away a lot so looked for an actual Chinese restaurant for a change, as you get bored of hotel food constantly. This place looked good so I walked to it, 25 mins from my hotel. On arrival they asked if it was just me, & seemed unimpressed when I said yes. They then said well you can have a take away or need to order from the a la carte, the latter being what i planned to do anyway.. As I looked at the menu they also said there's a £3 supplement per course as I was alone and they cook everything fresh (the least you'd expect anyway, right?). That would have added £12 to the bill for the meal I wanted... what a sham! I wouldn't care but they only had 3 of about 15 tables in use! Seriously unimpressed, and their attitude was just appalling to be honest, despite their star ratings on Google!

Food was bland and driver spent ten minutes trying to find my address. In the end I had to go searching for him!

Edit: food has now gone to a one star as I have been glued to the toilet all morning. Nice. Only reason this place is getting one star is because it's a genuinely nice Chinese. If it weren't for that I wouldn't even give it a star. The "all you can eat" is a sham. We were sat down, got given drink quickly which was nice. We ordered starters. 3 of which turned up the rest must've been imaginary. We then waited an hour for some main dishes. Again half of which turned up. To then be told that the kitchen was closing. 23 quid each for 10 downsized portions of food. Said we'd ordered 16 dishes on the receipt when I counted 9 that actually came out. Absolutely shocking.

We all left full and happy. The whole team were very welcoming.

Lovely food served by helpful and friendly staff. Our meal was sold in a way I’ve never encountered before, for a fixed price. An extensive menu, from which we could choose 6 dishes between us. Each served as a relatively small portion, which can be refilled as many times as you wish. With a financial penalty if you unnecessarily wasted food. In our opinion a brilliant idea!

Chinese banquet dining with a fixed price all you can eat menu to order from. Plenty of choices and tasty food cooked to order - even our children were adventurous and tried foods they would not usually choose on a menu. Clearly quite busy so booking ahead is advisable.

I ordered a takeaway from this restaurant and it was inedible. I ordered barbecue spare ribs which was ok but not exceptional and king prawn vermicelli which was watery no taste and disgusting will not be ordering from here again.

Restaurant was very busy at time a few big parties, service was very poor given dishes for approx 3 people on a 10 people table dishes ordered not given. The food we had was tasty. Would I go again with a larger party very doubtful

Although the food was still very nice, the service wasn't as good and it seemed there were two different chefs as we ordered the same dish twice but tasting different.

Absolutely awful, firstly stood waiting for the food which was ready but sat around waiting while somebody had a chat on the phone to then run and grab the food, food was stone cold, the smoked chicken over cooked so badly you can't eat it solid hard pieces of chicken, to then top it off a long hair in the rice. I also called to question the portion sizes as £4.80 for what was a handful of chips which is not even enough for one person to be told this is restaurant portion size. Completely and utterly ripped off. The food went straight in the bin. If I could give a 0 star rating rating I would.

Had a small delivery. VERY expensive, prob worst takeaway we have ever had.. Chow mein 6 tiny bits of chicken, thin noodles were OK but only warm / bland no flavour small portion for almost £9. Same with chicken fried rice hardly any meat at all but at least it was hot. Half a bag of chips for almost £5, never again will have Takeaway from here. Delivery was quick, but with poor quality not surprising

Great food don't like how they tell you that you have a limited time, unfortunately slow service and the portions have shrunk crispy squid for 4 people was 5 units on the plate on asking why was told you can order again.....yes I can when you waiter decides to comes back. Really gone down hill won't be going again 😪

Great meal here with large group. All food was lovely but (being picky) duck starter needs a bigger sauce bowl as we ran out.

Came here for a family birthday, to be told my very petite 11yr old would be an adult price of £23.50….which is just ridiculous. No way my daughter would eat the same amount of food as an adult. The only other option was she could have a portion of chips instead….not she could be charged as a 10yr old which is still steep but more reasonable than an adult fee!! Really disappointed at the way we were treated regarding the issue also. Will definitely be thinking twice of eating here again as a family with children.

Probably the worst Chinese I have ever tasted. Chewy Chilli Beef with tasteless Singapore fried rice. Portion size was also pathetic but this wasn’t important as I wouldn’t want to eat any more from this restaurant. Won’t order from here again.

Second time here for a family gathering. I like the way they do things, portions, the rules for the buffet, and the recipes were excellent. Service a tad slower than I'd hope for perhaps but it was busy. A very minor inconvenience. Good alcohol free beer available.

Food us ok but the price hike is a joke. Left menu is old, black one is the newest one. I even added together all dishes from thr set meal E and they came up to £61.3, ordered as a set they are £65. What a joke!

Absolutely delicious food, freshly cooked, and wonderful staff who were very attentive to your needs.

Would give a 0 if I could, I made a booking for a table of 25 with a months prior notice, I was told over the phone that we would all be seated together, when we arrived they had given us 3 table in 3 different locations of the restaurant and when I asked for the tables to be moved together, the staff members were rude and didn’t want to listen to us, customer service was very unprofessional would never come back. The food is horrendous anyway.

Had good meals here in the past and usually with very large tables. 2 of us rrived today (wed) at 8.45 and was told kitchen closed when advertised till 10.30 on the door, not even offered takeaway. So really really left disappointed and will think twice before recommending to anyone again

Excellent experience from start to finish - lovely, attentive staff who went above and beyond to make us feel welcome and supported (got to give a special shout out to Murphy) and really tasty food. There was a wide range of food to experience and the flavours were very good. Highly recommended and we can't wait to go back...

This place went really downhill a few years ago. I was invited for a birthday party recently and it has totally changed! The service was amazing, the food was delicious and the environment was calm and friendly. I have since been a few more times and each time it has been amazing. The staff their are so attentive and kind.

Was my favourite restaurant, but dissapointed of late. I dont know if things have changed in the kitchen, but a few of us, not all the same time had bad bellys and visited the loo too many times. What's going on guys?

Food is OK but they do not bring enough for the amount of people. Shouldn't have to constantly ask for more so everyone can eat together. Staff are awfully rude and not interested in anything apart from money. Ripped off with wine as agreed price was ignored and they added £6 without telling me. Also they charge quiet a lot for cola which they poured from a bottle which had been purchased at Lidel. On leaving they accused us of 2 people not paying (who had paid first) with no apology. Not clean and tidy in the restaurant with staff bags, coat and boxes of stock on table next to us. Restaurant very tired with zero atmosphere. We went back in January and it was lovely. Maybe they have changed hands. I will certainly never recommend and will never go back

Been here a few times. Food is always delicious, always seems manic but the staff are ace and do it well!

Poor service, food so slow and potion for 2 not 7 with every dish, had to keep asking for more. Rice & noodles better but waited for accompanying dish so long it all went cold. Drinks a rip off , so expensive, ask for large wine you get small but charged for large, they say it is a large but I know my wine portions. Ask for duck for 7 and again you get enough for 2 and the cucumber trimmings were dry, old and so stingy. They keep you there to keep buying drinks. We felt like an inconvenience not a paying customer.

Service was an absolute shambles, constantly being asked to order food yet several dishes never even arrived! Not a patch on previous owners service. Unlikely to return sadly.

If I could give this a zero I would. The food has no taste. The sweet and sour chicken looked highlighter pink. Overpriced. I'm pretty sure I have diahoerra now.

Lots of food order items didn't arrive, not just once but every time an order taken. Wait exceptionally long but staff asked every 5 ish minutes if we wanted to order food!! Mains minute, 4 Prawns for 7 people so placed yet another order for 4 more Prawns!!! but wait so long food cold or we eat plain noodled and rice. Insulting to think they still charged us £21.20 each. Staff friendly but whole service was an absolute shambles. Been going to shanghai for decades but now unfortunately I will never return.

First visit to Shanghai Restaurant today. First impressions were fabulous, a huge smile from one of the staff at the door who took us to our table straight away. Felt instantly welcomed. And the food was just exquisite!!! Perfect sized portions and incredibly, tasty with top notch ingredients used. All staff were polite, efficient and gave an excellent level of service. We will most certainly be making this Restaurant one of our regulars!

One of my favourite places to eat, massive range of food all cooked fresh and arrives quickly and piping hot. Lots of staff on hand for drinks etc only down side is on street parking

Went for the all you can eat buffet and it was excellent. Top quality food served by lovely staff. Made our visit an absolute pleasure. Will definitely be visiting again.

What a shame. The Shanghai has long been my favourite restaurant until now. Our first visit since the change of ownership/management and I was really disappointed by the quality of food, my son’s favourite was salt and pepper squid but it was terrible. We will not return and now need to find an alternative Chinese. Edit Oct 22, it has got a lot better since my original post, although the salt and pepper squid is still not good!!

My first visit and been meaning to try for years. It was a lovely buffet with the partner and daughter, every dish was nice and hot, prompt service and drinks, lovely atmosphere. Book your table to avoid disappointment. Will definitely return 💯

Poor service poor amount on plate had to wait 10min after main course was delivered for rice not very good evening out won't be going there again did complain when paying but just said that's what is .
