Me and my boyfriend came here for lunch and absolutely loved it. We ordered the sharing dishes which were super tasty and all came really quickly, there were also plenty of veggie options available. I used to live around the corner and pop in most nights for a couple of fish tacos. Now I live a little further away I still make the journey to my favourite restaurant. The classic margarita is the best in town. Their fish tacos melt in the mouth and I can only eat ceviche from Santo. Their tomato and tortilla soup is also delicious

Do not be fooled by the initial impression as a buoyant hotspot of authentic Mexican cuisine in a vivacious corner of Notting Hill - Santo is an affront to decency. To look back on the experience in a positive light would be, at best, futile, and it is clear that I am not alone in holding this view. Such a flagrant disregard for culinary aptitude is seldom encountered, and they likewise miss the value for money criterion by a rather impressive margin. Our meal was capped off by an awkward exchange with an arrogant degenerate, posing as a waitress, upon our rational refusal to pay the laughable discretionary service charge, and is one that we, as long as we are able to reason, will never seek to repeat.

Dropped in for a break from the market. The food was much better quality and taste than lookey-likely faux Mexican restaurants, but small portions made it very, very overpriced. Eg £9 for nine 10p sized bits of octopus...£12 for a small nachos? And drinks - a bottle of Sol for £5.50? It is just greedy. I guess they can get away with it because trendy kids from the area with big bank balances will pay these prices, but I won’t be back. A shame because it tasted good.

Being often in the area, we were curious about this Mexican place. We went on a Friday evening, luckily on the early side so we avoided the later confusion and noise: the restaurant is relatively small, and once full it is very noisy, though the music is kept at a reasonable volume (you hear it, but it does not interfere). The place had atmosphere, and the staff was friendly thought service was slow. The food was good but expensive, and portions were quite small. There is an interesting selection of cocktails, also with beer, but all quite expensive; there is no draft beer, though the beer in bottles comes with frozen mugs which really keep it cold, quite a nice touch. At the end, in two we spent £ 47, including the inevitable 12.5% automatic service charge - this was for one burrito (main), two tacos (side), one guacamole (appetizer) and two beers each. The evening was nice, but I will look for more reasonable places.

Food was adequate but HUGELY overpriced! £14 for a burrito - we were expecting the best burrito we'd ever eaten for that price. Instead we received a very small, very average burrito. The tortilla wrap could've been bought from Tesco, it contained a small amount of battered fish with some shredded lettuce and a bit of chopped tomato salad. Pathetic. The only redeeming feature was a delicious Pisco Sour cocktail. But this wasn't enough to tempt me back. PLUS we asked the waitress if she actually got any of the service charge that was automatically added to our bill and she said no, so we asked for it to be removed. She also agreed that the portions were small and overpriced when we complained. What a scam.

Get there at 8:35. They tell us they have a table we can have for an hour. We take it.Basically from that moment forward, the waitress is pushing us out the door.Checking her watch. Taking food away before we are finished with it.On and on. And is just snippy and short with us.We finish eating within 35 minutes. And they basically force us out.Take our food away. Refuse to bring us water. Refuse to bring us desert menus. Oh! And when we order she says: "you know you only have an hour so I hope you know you can't order more after". OBVIOUSLY. And then, with 20 minutes to spare, they plop the check down and are basically like: LEAVE. On the way out, I told the hostess-- "if you offer a table for an hour, you shouldn't make us feel uncomfortable and like we are second class diners throughout our meal." And she said: "you said you were only wanting and quick dinner." And I said: "yes-- but your waitress shouldn't treat us like we are putting her out. This is on her, not you."And it was just outrageous.Arrived at 8:38, walked out the door at 9:21.It was rude and inappropriate and the way the hostess snapped at me was outrageous. And it was vastly overpriced for the mediocre quality. They were honestly so rude it was incredible

I’ve been ordering from Santos many time and we’ve also dined at Santos many times too. But, this delivery has been the worst quality ever. I always thought the food was quite expensive compared to US prices for good Mexican Food. I am from Latin America and love Mexican food. However, these portions were so small compared to any good Mexican Restaurant. Mexican food is not expensive to prepare and normally when I order in other places there is much left over to enjoy later. But, not here! These portions are the tiniest portions ever. We just ordered a Burrito for £14.00 and I compared it to the size of my Iphone and it’s almost the same size! It was also mostly flour tortilla and not much filling Awful. Santos quality has gone down over the years and I would never eat there again nor recommend this to any friends. It was one of the best in the early days but now it’s just one of the worst and joins the ranks of being one of London’s worst Mexican Food. Go to Benito Hut or Lupita for better for….. or dare I say even Chipotle!

With a group of friends from work (8 persons), we decided to try this place. First off, the waiter told us that since we were a group, we had to choose from a set menu (roughly 30-35 pounds!). We insisted on ordering something from the regular menu. We ordered a Sangria pitcher but were told that there was no pitcher for sangria (just glasses) but they had pitchers of Margarita so we went for that. Then we each ordered one meal (including Tingas, carnitas etc...). To say that the portions were small is a joke because what we got served were mini fahitas, litterally the size of a hand palm. Then a small bowl of meat with nothing else to put inside (no sour cream, not even one piece of vegetable!?!). Needless to say we left the place with an empty stomach and then the bill arrived; 160 pounds!!! we got charged 42 pounds for the Margarita Pitcher and they added an 18 pounds service charge!!! When asked about the Margarita pitcher, we were told that they counted each glass used in the pitcher so 8.40/glass x 5 (But they couldn't do that for the Sangria!?!). Can you say "Tourist trap"? When we started complaining, it took them a couple minutes to remove the "abusive" service charge.

The true salsa party starts after 11:00 pm, when the tables get moved out of the way and the place transforms into one large dance floor. This place is shockingly busy over the weekends, I know because I live just down the street however the food is marginal at best and way over priced for the quality and portion size. The service has been comical the two times I have gone, last night being the last time. They either don't even acknowledge you when you walk in or when serving you, say as little as possible to you. They all seem to be frustrated that they have to be working there. It is a sad day when Chipotle serves far better food than you do and for half the price and in an establishment that is far cleaner and welcoming. The main problem with this place - it's simply too expensive. The whole point of Mexican food is that it is quick and cheap. The veggie burrito is £12. TWELVE POUNDS?! The atmosphere was buzzin, but having had 3 beers & dined we spent over £70 without breaking sweat & the authentic feel if the cantina wore thin - a bit like the upholstery: but at these prices it's less a case of the owners striving for a taste of Mexico, & more like they're having a laugh! Oh, & we left hungry & finished eating elsewhere where it was better value ! The place was full so what do the owners care about having such a naff proportion to their reviews? but that will prove short sighted

humming, fluffy tacos and spices to remove your teeth. Really delicious Mexican red wine. Waitress was britally honest about Mexican white wine - "it's French". very busy so be prepared to wait. A real gem in the grotty end of Portobello Road

Popped in for two Margarita's Clasica, cost £17.00p and to add insult to injury they added a service charge because they said it was a restaurant!!! So the total bill was £19.12 for 2 drinks!!Admittedly the drinks were strong if small but no complimentary Chips and Salsa which is standard in any Mexican bar let alone a so called restaurant.Of course its understood that Portobello Rd is a tourist trap but if you are a tourist don't get trapped here its rubbish.

I dined with four girlfriends on a Friday night after work, I wasn't sure what to expect to be honest as I've never really had good Mexican food here in the UK, plus I didn't have time to read any reviews before we went. I needn't have worried though as this place was simply excellent, delicious food, a super chilled out vibe with friendly and helpful staff made it a really great night. We ate tapas style so ordered a few plates to share, we started with the nachos and a portion of guacamole which were yum, if a little on the expensive side at £12.50 for the Nachos and £5.50 for a teeny tiny pot of guacamole with some tortilla chips. We then had chicken and beef tacos, pork and prawn cazuelas, everything was so tasty, really fresh and delicious, we devoured it all and then ordered more tacos on top! The dj was arriving as we were leaving and when we walked past at midnight the party seemed in full swing. Great little restaurant, will be returning for sure.

Went here with friends for dinner.Ambiance: great.Ceviche: fantastic! (though small)Nachos: bad.Beer: bottled Modelo at 4.50 pounds (what??)Overall, would not recommend, because it's too expensive to be a hangout and the food is not at the level to have it quality as "fine dining". The owners should make up their minds: are they the cool street outfit? Then chop the prices. Are they the truly great Mexican? Then bring all the food to the level at which ceviche is currently prepared.

Annoyingly overpriced for really very average food and crazy portions. Gaucamole in a ramekin...I mean come on.Service was ok, surroundings shabby and dusty, table wobbly, wine not chilled, burrito tiny with no flavour other than guacamole. Was pretty pained handing over £50. It won't happen again! Save your money and your mood and go elsewhere

Santo - a love hate relationship. Every time I go here, I love the food, but hate the bill and vow never to go back. A burrito is £14. Burritos are street food. You can get a great burrito for $10 or less pretty much anywhere in the southwest corner of America. In London, you can go to Chipotle fast food Mexican and get one for £7, but the sour cream is freezing cold and the meat, rice and beans luke warm. And the rice is that instant stuff. so its only...OK...barely. Wahaca, which is very westernized Mexican, has a burrito for £7 and its better than Chipotle for sure. And if you want beans and rice at Santo? add £4 EACH -for rice and beans, which probably cost about 10p to buy. They don't even make MEXICAN rice - just white rice with "some spices". Mestizo by Warren St tube is £14 for its most expensive enchilada (a baked burrito with sauce on top, if I'm keeping it very simple), PLUS you get rice, beans and vegetable! I checked for a comparison - NY City upper west side, Gabriel's a long time Mexican institution charges $18, which is pretty darn close to £14 (well, its actually £12 equivalent) but you also get a big scoop of Mexican rice AND beans! so really the $18 Gabriel's burrito meal is equal to a $33 dollar Santo meal (£22 for burrito, rice an beans).Put it another way, an adult and two kids, who order 2 burritos, 1 quesadilla, and one guac, salsa and chips, plus 2 lemonades and a margarita should not be paying £65 for a meal (service included) or $100 equivalent. Especially when the location is the upper part of Portobello road where the rents are cheap. Was the service good? It was adequate and friendly, nothing special. Is the food good? Yes. The guacamole was excellent and the burritos and meat inside perfectly cooked. I really could go on about the quality of the burrito - it destroys Chipotle. That being said all is not perfect - the Mexican (mild) salsa was lame - chopped tomato, onion and cilantro is a poor man's pico de gallo missing half the ingredients. That's just a lazy cop-out. But that was a small bit of the meal and the other salsas were very good, so you really cant ding on the food. So, are you getting value for money on a London comparison basis? Given the location and the décor, an emphatic "No!". Come on! This is insulting! If you have money to burn AND are desperate for good Mexican food (and it is good!) AND are unwilling to travel to other parts of London, go to Santo. But if bothers you to overpay, not just a little, but a lot? stay away. I'm sitting here writing this having just left Santo and feeling very satisfied and very, very stupid at the same time.

Santo is my local Mexican. Its always been a reliable and fun place for normal mexican fare. Now they have convinced themselves that by having a nicer looking menu they can keep the food to be very average as well as the cocktails (the margarita was vile) they can kick up the prices. A bowl with two tea spoon scoops of guacamole is priced close to £6. The mains are all in the region of £14. I understand that its Portobello, its quaint etc... but you cannot justify those prices with that quality and with an interior which seems to have been put together by rummaging in a junk yard. Its a pit and the two brothers have lost a client. You are better off going to Crazy Homies on Westbourne Park Road. Thats the real deal. This is nada.

My daughter booked a reservation two weeks prior to our visit to return to Santo again . She had several email conversations and a confirmation for a table for 2 in the back room . She even confirmed the morning of our reservation. When we arrived they did not have our reservation in the book. My daughter showed them her confirmation. They proceeded to take her phone to the back where they discussed for 5 minutes meanwhile the hostess was extremely rude and no help at all. They finally told us we could have 2 seats at a table set for 6 people and had to leave prior to 9 pm and the table was upfront by the door. They blatantly ignored her confirmation and though they thought they were accommodating they were not. We left and will not return.

I had heard a lot about this restaurant and went there really excited. But it was really bad. First of all, they sad us on the worst table, right next to the door (which was freezing) and facing where they cleaned the dishes. I had had a surgery and cold is really bad for me, but when I told the waitress she said she can't move us. I understand there are bad tables in all restaurants, but this one was horrible and FREEZING. But the ethical thing to do, is to tell the customer in advance that the table is next to the door. The food, was tasteless and anything but Mexican. The drink were really good.the dance? a bunch of people standing listening to music. Maybe it is different on other night, but on this Friday night, it was terrible. The bill came to 52 pounds per person. It was not worth it. I will never go back there again.I've never written a review before, but this was such a bad experience that I had to write about it.If you are going there, ask for a table that is not next to the door, because you will freeze.

We ventured down Portobello rd looking for somewhere to eat after watching the Rugby at Twickenham rather than heading to our normal destination of soho. The Saturday market was just packing up and towards the northern end of the road we came upon this place. Since my daughter had visited Mexico in the summer we thought we'd give it ago. We hadn't booked but they found us a seats for four on the proviso that we'd be finished by 8pm one & half hours away. (No problem) We ordered nachos to share then a couple of main courses. Both were excellent but I would agree with some posts here a little on the pricy side. By the time we were leaving the place was getting very busy and people were being turned away. So this must speak for it self. I'm sure you will enjoy this authentic Mexican.

Nice place/vibe -service friendly enough, however when the food arrived we got a shock. The portions are so laughably small I was lost for words. Honestly, unless you have money to burn then go elsewhere.. It really is a shame as the small mouthful of a main I did have was very tasty but however should have been a third of the price for the ridiculous size it was. £9 for a main the size of a spring roll. Not even joking.

I went there with my boyfriend at the end of July at around 8.30pm on a week day. we called before hands to ask if we needed to reserve for a table on that same day and a lady answering the phone said that we didn't need to, but once we arrived on site, 20 min later, we were told it was better to book in advance (?!) anyway the man at the reception showed us to a table at the back of the restaurant, in a sort of small adjacent room. It was empty save for the bar where they mix the drink, and they probably do parties there as they were lots of sound system material and cables. but a waitress came quickly to take our order, and we decided to take a non alcoholic cocktail each, and then the waitress mentioned that the tacos where small so we went for burritos, one "carnita" (pulled pork) and another one" rib eyes". The drink came fairly quickly. and I would say, I understand some comment about how expensive the place is, because it wasn't really anything amazing. I had a virgin mojito, which were ok and my boyfriend had a mixed of juice of some sort, and it was very basic, also the glasses were small, so you are tempted to order more I guess. But all the little bad things were forgotten when the waitress brought the food. It came fairly quickly as well knowing that both the outdoor and the main room were full of customer and they give you free nachos to nibble on while waiting.the burritos were amazing! the meat was juicy and tasty and perfectly cooked. with the right amount of vegetables inside. It was by far the tastiest, biggest burrito ever eaten. It was so big that we didn't feel anymore hungry for desert. So to recap, food is amazing as far as I know and I plan on going back soon. just don't drink expensive or fancy drinks because they aren't up to expectations, and book in advance as even week nights seem to be pretty busy!

I agree with the other reviews that, for the portion size, the food is overpriced. Especially the chicharrón de pescado starter, which was £9 for basically a very small portion of deep fried fish skin. However, the burritos were yum, despite being quite small and the atmosphere and decor is really fun. They also clear the tables later and create a dance floor and everyone had a good boogie. Overall, we had a really fun night. Maybe just go for a drink?

We went to Santo for my wife's birthday, We booked for 15 people. We pay 10£ in advance for each person, we end up being 13 but many others join us for a drink and we had some more drinks on the disco/area late... At the end they wanted to keep the deposit for the people who didn't show up...the staff were very rude and they treated me as I wanted to steal them. The food was average and very poor portion, the place was overcrowded. All of us were very disappointed about the quality of the food and the quality-quantity/price. Since then unless it's very close by from were we never got back..

The food and drinks are not bad but they are too expensive. The decor was very nice and the waitress was very friendly and helpful but also she seemed a bit too intrusive (she came to my table uninvited about 5 times in less than one hour I spent there). I tried once because from outside it seemed a nice place but I am not going there again. For the same quality there are other cheaper restaurant who serve bigger cocktail and more food.

We went to this place as we were advised that they make good margarita. The margarita was not bad but £8 for this small glass...? Honestly no. As for the food, one of the menu doesn't have to price on it, the price of the food is absolutely ridiculous when you see the portion. The waitress was way to insistent for me, asking us every 5 mins if we want something else... she litteraly asked us at least 7 times and we stayed there for one hour, obviously she didn't understand that the only thing that we wanted was to finish our margarita as quick as possible, to leave and to go spend our money somewhere else. Portobello Road is plenty of small lovely bar and restaurant therefore no need to waist your time there.

Have been there yesterday for the third time in the recent past. Santo is a very nice mexican, at the end of Portobello (area of Ladbroke Grove) away from tourist traps. Great place to have a drink, eat well and then on friday/saturday dance some salsa until 1 am. It has always been a pleasure going there, but I feel many have discovered the place and it is not the same experience as before. Crowded on a friday, lovely and kind service but not attentive enough as somebody has said already. Beers and mineral water at 5 pounds, margaritas at 10 pounds are just too expensive for the place and area, a bit of an abuse. The set menu is a good deal, 25 pounds for appetizers (nachos etc) plus a main spanning from lamb to beef to guacamole, beans, rice, ribs etc. But at the end of the day is difficult to spend less than 50 pounds which is excessive for an easy-going place. We stopped to dance some salsa in the internal room. The area was prepared late (around midnight) and the guys put up music only for one hour, a bit of salsa and R&B. The place is very small so gets crowded easily. It was packed, quality of people coming in later for drinks only was honestly so so and there was confusion. At the end we couldn't dance. Not as good as before, I think we won't come back for a while.

Amazing food, atmosphere and drinks in a beautiful little quirky bar. Booking is a must. The website doesn’t do this place justice. You can get a good cocktail and sharing platters are good value for money considering your on Kings Rd. my only notable annoyance was the website not showing a full example menu and we spent less as wasn’t aware they have a bigger menu than the website demonstrates.
