Mestizo Restaurant & Margarita Bar in Kensington and Chelsea

I went for weekend brunch and it was pretty nice. The restaurant itself is super cutely decorated. And all the staff were so easy to talk to and pretty helpful. They were always asking if I wanted more to drink or if I wanted more tacos. It was also just a fun time… they had mariachi come out at some point and they were nice guys too. I got some tacos which were nice. And I got the pozole which was a tad bland, but good if you just add your salsa and toppings. I’d definitely come back for brunch.

Food was OK.... cocktails and bar service saved the day (well night!!lol)

Food was great, as usual. No complaints there. What went wrong: - We had a booking for 5 people, but we were seated at a table that can hold barely 4. We all ordered tacos for a main, and no sides. The taco box (one) could barely fit on the table. Our plates were sticking out. The waiter, after positioning the taco box on the table, placed the taco bags directly in my hands, and walked away. There was no space for them on the table. I was a bit speechless at that point, and my guests and I could barely resist laughing out loud. What was I supposed to do, hold them for the entire dinner on my lap? - Towards the end of the meal, several waiters kept coming over to ask whether we were done. They must have asked us 5 or 6 times. We kept sending them away saying “no, we are not done, we are still finishing”. This has put undue pressure on us to hurry up and leave. Mind you, I understand time slots, reservations, the need for tables, etc. but there were many empty tables at that point, and no one waiting to be seated that I could see. Finishing our meal was a stressful experience and we all felt kicked out. - When the table was finally cleared, and it was time to pay, the bill sat there for a good while without anyone coming around with the card machine. This made the previous point even more annoying.

Food was delicious and very authentic.

Avoid this place like the plague! We went here for my partners birthday last week with our family and friends, awful service and we all got food poisoning. As someone who has previously worked in hospitality, definitely do not dine here! When we arrived it all seemed quite nice, they sang Happy Birthday and gave my partner a sombrero. We then went up to get food from the buffet which according to their website included “tacos” and “tamales”, it had neither. The options were very limited with the main dish being meat and rice, the one thing I will say we enjoyed was the soup and the cheese quesadillas were okay to fill us up. As for the service, the waiters pretty much didn’t acknowledge us and when I asked the head waiter about the cake we had brought he said we would have to pay an extra £20 just for them to bring it out as a “punishment fee” for bringing food from outside the restaurant. This “fee” information wasn’t shown anywhere on their website, nor in the booking details. The waiter tried to say that they had called all reservations to tell them about it the “fee” which was completely untrue. We ended up asking them to bring the cake anyway as it was a big cake for 10 people and paid the “fee” but refused to pay the almost £40 service charge which the waitress seemed visibly annoyed at, however, they hadn’t even served us to begin with and took everyone’s glasses away before we had finished our drinks so we didn’t see why we should pay for their “service”. Before leaving we asked for the cake box back and had to wait about 10 minutes for them to bring it which was ridiculous. The day after the meal was absolutely horrid for all of us, we were all incredibly ill, I personally spent the entire day throwing up and ended up going to urgent care as I was so weak from being sick all day. Would only recommend if you want a good gastrointestinal detox!

Friendly service but not as authentic in terms of atmosphere as I was hoping for, might be livelier in the evenings. We did have lovely Mexican singers though. Staff were friendly. felt a bit too casual and cafe like and not quite upmarket.

Green food, good environment friendly staff.

Nothing to do with Mexican food and Camden branch. Virtually nothing. Salsas are smooth and with no flavour, salsa verde doesn't have any hint of coriander nor lemon. Tamales and Empanadas were bland, almost impossible to recognise the filling. Tacos, we could recognise the filling. Nothing tastes fresh. Nice place, though.

Popped in for a quick dinner at 5:30. The host staff, largely disinterested, asked if I had a reservation. I did not. The restaurant was empty. She then informed me that I could not sit in the dining room as it would be full in 30 minutes. So I was sat in the bar/lounge on a tiny stool table. The server also had little interest despite having nothing to do with their time. I had to call them over for a drink order. They also brought a tiny cup of salsa and approx 7 tortilla chips. The drink, a “spicy” the El Diablo margarita, took a long time to be made and then sat on the counter. When it finally made it to me I was disappointed to see approximately 4 oz of liquid and a cup overflowing with oversized ice cubes. It was priced at 14.50 which worked out to be about £5 a sip. By the time I got it I had eaten the chips and salsa and I asked for more. The server then brought me another cup of salsa but no chips. I ordered the lamb shank (Mixiote de Cardero) which is purportedly steamed in banana leaves. The dish arrived and it was indeed covered with banana leaves which dominated the plate. The sauce was quite tasty but the lamb shank itself was cold in the middle and moderately warm outside. I guess it had been cooked prior and then quickly reheated.. but not all the way. The warm bits of the lamb were nice but there was not much to it. This was priced at £33.50 and served with a minuscule bit of rice and beans. I understand the location partially dictates price. Still this is an exceptionally poor value for small portions of mediocre food. Combined with a disinterested staff this made for a dismal dining experience that has little in common with Mexican traditions it aspires towards.

We recently hired the private room downstairs at Mestizo Chelsea for a hen party, and it was absolutely perfect! From start to finish, the staff were incredibly accommodating, from Alexis on emails arranging everything, to Allan our private barman - and DJ Gordo - all excellent! The private space was perfect for our group of 26 people - thank you! The food was fantastic - mixed starters and then unlimited tacos for an hour and a half. The drinks package was great value, and Allan, our barman, kept everyone’s glasses full - the frozen margheritas were a particular hit! Overall, the experience was excellent, especially considering the value for money. I’d highly recommend Mestizo’s private room for a party!

Although the staff were wonderful and the cocktails good, I must say the food was truly awful, no other way to describe it. The octopus was chewy, the prawns were hard, the duck and beef tasteless.The ambiance was nice.

Nice atmosphere and super nice staff. Cocktails were nice. Would recommend, but not for the food. Meat was either too dry or just not so flavourful, really not what you’d expect for Mexican food. Prices are very decent!

Bland food, zero taste. We shared Molcajete - the speciality of the house. Too salty, very dry. Tortillas like cardboard, starters had no flavour whatsoever. Not coming back.

Incredibly disappointed. Rang up a week prior to book a table only to be gaslit upon my arrival that I hadn’t made a booking. We were told we could go downstairs for a few drinks whilst we and wait for a table that would be around an hour. It was almost two hours before we sat down upstairs and even when we sat down the service was a little shocking, our waiter kept disappearing and it took ages for us to place an order, they only poured wine for half the table, took some plates away before we were all done. I was so excited to try mestizo because the menu looks great and Mexican is some of my favourite cuisine but even the food was disappointing - I had the mole enchiladas which were disappointing as the mole was poor compared to mole I’ve had in Oaxaca. Others were disappointed with their food too. We were also disappointed that little effort had been made to accommodate us on the back of their booking mistake (one could normally expect a complimentary round of drinks, for example) and they seemed surprised when we requested not to pay service. Furthermore, my clothes smelt of cooking afterwards.

Very nice restaurant! Food was very good. The tequila cocktail was nice, bit could be better, anyways really good and service was awesome! The 3 leches was banging! One of the bests I've tried!

The food was underseasoned and the service was awful. My partner made a reservation for her birthday over the phone, we arrived and they told us they had no space for us. They tell us it will be 1 hour waiting time and put us in the nightclub downstairs with music blaring. My partner is on crutches and cannot leave for another restauranr. It then proceeds to be two hours until they seat us. The food was so unseasoned, the meat was tough. There were no complimentary drinks or anything to compensate us. Genuinely awful treatment from the staff, I cannot put into words how much you should go to this restaurant.

Everything is superb, the service impeccable, the restaurant has character and atmosphere instead of being stuffy, the prawns are unbelievably succulent, and the flavours especially in the tortillas out of this world. The Tequila presentation was a lovely touch. Gracias!

Once again the ratings mislead. The “Alambra” tacos I ordered consisted of tough, rather poor quality beef chunks and came with corn tacos that had a particular wetness associated of warming something up from the freezer. Poor value for money. The venue has a nice ambiance however.

Without hesitation, the worst Mexican food I have ever had in my life, and I have been in many, including few trips to Mexico. We went there because the one in Warren Street is decent and the menu looks appealing. They made us wait almost an hour until we were seated and the food was horrendous. PLEASE AVOID if you are looking for good Mexican food. This is a place to have a drink at the bar and maybe some dancing downstairs.

We found the place by chance and went there. The service was very good. They understood that we were unfamiliar with the cuisine, so they specifically warned us about the intense taste of some dishes. Although the food we ate was delicious, after a while we had to leave half of the food on the plate because of the large portions and the intense taste of the food. But our dessert was legendary. I'm glad we followed the recommendation and ordered it. Also, their margaritas were great.

Booked a table for Friday night, paid a £60 deposit, and confirmed the reservation over the phone only to have the reservation canceled in the middle of the night by the restaurant with no explanation given. Update: Edited to say that I was contacted by a customer relations manager and told this was a problem with The Fork, the booking platform I used to make my reservation. The manager did say this was an issue that happens often, so keep that in mind and book directly with the restaurant. I was offered a different time slot to the one I had booked, which was a nice offer, but sadly we'd already booked in elsewhere. My deposit was promptly refunded. Appreciated the call and hope to be able to actually try the food soon!

Excellent place to enjoy with family and friends I came to the Sunday buffet, with mariachi I definitely recommend it. Michelle and López made our stay very pleasant. The chef was very helpful and gave excellent recommendations. The horchata and hibiscus water were also very delicious.

Abella was so amazing and made my experience so fun! She super attentive and gave the best recommendations. I would highly recommend this charming spot to anyone visiting who is looking for great service and good food!

Not coming back I happened to stumble upon Meztizo Chelsea the other night. My boyfriend and I had several cocktails at the bar. We heard that there was a party downstairs so we wanted to see what was up.(lol) It was a great vibe up until I went to order a drink and a guy called Melio was so rude to us and was shouting at the other barmen… it was so awkward and this guy was insanely rude. So we left.

Miguel made our dinner very special by providing best recommendations from the menu. Great food and atmosphere. We will be back 💛🤗

Our first visit and. Food and service were both good here the only criticism I would provide is the cleanliness of firstly the stairs to the bathrooms and kitchen were filthy - full of dirt and sticky and the bathrooms were not clean at all, which always makes me think how clean is the kitchen? Service was good but attention to the cleanliness would make this place a super 5star venue

Uncomfortable and agressive experience. Last night, my girlfriends and I visited Mestizo in Chelsea. The cocktails were delicious and the vibe was great however, we ended up leaving out of uncomfortableness because of a staff members behavior (his name was something like Julio/Emilio?). We witnessed him aggressively shouting at all of the staff many times in the night, it was shocking. What finally made us leave, was when he was shouting at the staff aggressively right in front of us, as if he didn’t care who witnessed his horrible behavior. It was shocking to see such aggressive and unprofessional behavior, it’s surprising that Mestizo Chelsea allows this to happen. It’s spoilt a really cool place for a night out.

Our server Peter was helpful from the outset. He gave great food recommendations and was attentive throughout. Will definitely be returning.

Yjowel and Abella made our meal so special, first time going here and it was honestly so so amazing. They didnt stop checking if we had everything we needed, will definitely be returning !! I have an allergy and they made sure I had everything I needed, so attentive and recommended such incredible dishes (had the rib eye and guac and sea bass)
