The customer service here and general energy from the man working here was awful. He immediately seemed annoyed at us that we were only ordering teas, not food. Even though the cafe was basically empty. I could understand if it was full as we would be taking the space of a diner spending more money. While seated, we overheard him telling another customer off for filling a jug with the free water, despite the jug being right next to it. Also heard him tell another customer off for sharing her coffee with a friend. The general atmosphere and attitude of this staff member was uncomfortable and unpleasant. I understand if a cafe has its own regulations/rules, but politeness goes a long way. Would not return or recommend.

The service was so slow and don't even get me started on the food, which was all mushed together. Now I know why it was so quiet and the people who were there only had drinks.

We found this little gem during our stay in Edinburgh and we’d definitely return when we visit again! There was 5 of us and we were met with a very friendly welcome and super quick service! Our drinks arrived quickly and we can highly recommend the iced coffee and hot chocolate! Our food arrived in good time too, they catered for our little ones and it was delicious. We’d definitely recommend this little gem - and we will be back. Thanks so much

This charming cafe is a fantastic spot for breakfast. The full Scottish breakfast was generously portioned, and the prices were very reasonable. They were also very accommodating to our kids, making sure we had everything we needed. Would highly recommend.

Best Macchiato I’ve had in Edinburgh, I’ve came here for years, always a nice energy around the place. I regularly stop by for lunch to as I work in the area, very fresh selection!

Got an Oat Latte which was delicious, the service was great and very friendly staff. Will definitely be back.

Don’t go for the coffee! I ordered a flat white that came back as something like a coffee with milk. When I sent it back, the staff said “that’s how we make it.” I was under the impression that they offered something else so I took a simple cappuccino instead. Even that came with poorly steamed milk—about the consistency of a 2€ automatic espresso machine. But in the end, they charged me a reduced price for the replacement—or a total of £6.45 for 2 bad coffees. And the barista said again, “that’s how we make it.” A quick scan of the reviews shows 4 others who say the coffee is thin and horrible. Believe it. But soup was great and the beef chili was also very good. [UPDATE] no one expects a free coffee—they just want a passably good coffee. Please use the £7 you took from me and sign up for a proper barista class.

Came here for late lunch after Fringe. The Scottish broth was very good. Nice flavor with lots of barley, chicken and veggies. Chili also nice but strange combo of tortilla chips, chili, rice and avocado. The only downfall was the coffee which was awful. Husband didn’t drink the flat white, sent it back asking for a cappuccino to replace it. That too was bad and he got charged for both.

Don’t go for coffee, it doesn’t taste good, if I order an oat cappuccino I expect frothed barista style milk, but this coffee was just warm milk with no froth at all! I feel I’ve wasted £3.75! Easily the worst coffee I’ve had in Edinburgh and worst atmosphere in a cafe I’ve experienced.

I would best describe a trip to this café as a hug for the soul. You can’t beat a filling, tasty soup and hot drink here on a rainy day. My boyfriend and I refer to it as ‘the café with the nice lady’ 🤣 - because the service here is so friendly and gives a real homely atmosphere. Recommend to all locals and tourists! :)

First time visit on a Sat afternoon. First thing I noticed was the HUGE selection of bottled drinks & beer selection. Enjoyed a generous portion of Italian soup & plentiful sliced bread, a fresh peach & apricot iced tea & a big cappuccino. Soup & bread was around £8 & layered with flavours & textures. Cappuccino approx £4 with a robust taste. Space outside & all the way to the back inside, little window nook. Decorative crockery added to a chilled vibe. Gent was very friendly and chatted despite listening to a football match (and displaying his enthusiasm for his team) on a radio 🤣 Selection of cakes/cannolis. Would be a go to if in the area later.

The guy went above and beyond to serve us delicious lentil soups and warm crispy bread rolls, even though he was super busy and working alone in the cafe. The soup was also 10/10 delicious and exactly what we needed after a walk.

Having recently moved to Edinburgh I'm always on the lookout for cafe's that can become regular haunt's. It's exceedingly hard to find cafe's in Edinburgh that have good old lentil soup available.. I popped in here today and they had a great selection of soups available, including lentil. It was lovely and came with a baguette. The gentleman who was working was on his own on a busy Saturday and was lovely. A great wee spot, I shall be back :)

Seems like a nice place and takeaway coffee was cheap but honestly such a bad coffee, way too hot, burnt, and no texture to the milk. Was a takeaway flat white and tasted watery. Please do a Barista training course. Please. Like even a one day course. There was also a great Tea selection.

Ordered a flat white to go. The service was good and the cafe seemed cosy but the coffee was truly awful. I couldn't drink it and ended up throwing it away. It was far too hot and definitely burnt.

Cosy and warm come to mind. Soup was delicious and the service reminded me of home. Soup was plenty and bread was generous.

Highly recommend! Food is so filling with very healthy options. Recommend the falafel and hummus sandwich. Staff were friendly and seems to be a really popular meeting point. Also offers great student deals (cheaper sandwiches, soup ect)

I love coming here, the food and coffee is great and really reasonably priced (which is rare in the centre of Edinburgh!), there's a really nice relaxed atmosphere, and the service is always welcoming and friendly.

this cafe felt so homey and comfortable. super friendly staff, a great americano, and DELICIOUS and filling vegan breakfast - it had the vibe of homemade meal, which is really special when traveling. best thing i've eaten in edinburgh so far; i can't wait to come back here!

Once we came in everything seemed fine, I have noticed that the floors aren't super clean but hey.. thats fine, we ordered , sat down , we were brought a single use plate with a salt and pepper holders, the pepper holder was not very clean, could have been wiped down prior to service... then the food came, we paid 30 pounds for drinks and 2 salmon breakfast, we got dirty plates with eggs a piece of toast and a chucked on top of it salmon slices..... believe me when I say I am not a picky person, but that was just embarrassing, I tasted the eggs and I couldn't hold myself but to spit it back onto the napkin, it tasted of fish, not as in its a fish dish.... it tasted like they were cooked on a pan that had fish on it and never been washed. The meal itself was looking superbly sad, no greens nothing, a chunky toast with a slice of salmon and scrumbled eggs on the side. I actually remembered that there was cheese cream mentioned, but we were told "nicely" that it's the dinner option that comes with cream cheese. I was asked if I wanted it anyway and I said yes, very "discreetly " the lady announced to who ever that was that I wanted cream cheese.... and then after we decided to leave we nicely said that the eggs taste funny, with a taste of fish, " well...it is a fish dish.." yes honey it doesn't mean eggs need to taste of old fish. We got up and left.. We left 30 pounds behind and couldn't care less.... sad... hopefully that will be taken into consideration. Apauling.

As a regular customer, I recommend the delicious soup, filled sub rolls and coffee. Lovely staff too.

The baguettes are delicious and the lentil soup is amazing, almost as good as my Mum used to make. The portions are good too, you'll leave with a full stomach.

One of my favourite cafes/ sandwich shops in Edinburgh. Have been attending this cafe for over 8 years and will continue to visit it on my return to the city. The baguette selection is excellent, all freshly made and a unique combination of ingredients. The lentil soup is consistently tasty and very filling, often served with a fresh baguette roll. The two servers are delightful. I would recommend this to anyone in the vicinity who wants a quick lunch!

There were 4 choices of wholesome, delicious soup accompanied by warm sliced baguettes. Staff was very friendly, though run ragged. Small cake choices were excellent and the millionaire's shortcake was divine.

I’m a regular here- often go at lunchtimes to grab a sandwich. I work at the university and today I went in with a friend who wanted a takeaway coffee. I politely asked for some hot water in my cup that I previously had tea in and had my card out ready to pay. Now I’m not sure if there are any words to describe the incredibly rude and appalling attitude I was faced with this point onwards. The older lady serving me (who has served me previously) sighed, rolled her eyes and said “do you know we’re just a small business, we’re not a Starbucks or Costa. People seem to think they can come here and ask for free stuff or sit with their laptops without buying anything. We’ve had students here doing this all day. When I tried to explain that you I’m a regular, I’ve got my card out to pay for a cup of hot water that I’ve politely asked for and that I have never sat down in any of my visits (not that that should matter), I was told “it’s fine just get your water and you can go”. This is the first time that I have ever been accused and shamed as A REGULAR CUSTOMER. Attitude is everything! And one thing you never do as a small business is mix your loyal, regular and polite customers with freeloaders. All this because I asked for a cup of hot water!!!

Avoid if you're looking for coffee. Worst coffee I have ever had in my life. It was so burnt that it was impossible to drink and I had to throw it away.

Fabulous wee café with plenty of choice. The quality of the sandwiches are top shelf - as good if not better than any other offerings on Forrest Road.

Best sandwiches and coffee. Loved the owners. Our daughter stayed back at our flat one day and they made a little get well package for her. She drank the tea and it helped. They made our trip a wonderful experience.

If you're looking for a place to work, have a coffee, or grab lunch I highly recommend stopping by! Easily my favourite cafe in all of Edinburgh. The owner and his wife are some of the kindest people I've met in the city. The cafe has a neighbourhood feel where they know everyone by name and welcome everyone with open arms. They will immediately make you fee like family.

Great little place with delicious freshly made soup, good coffee, and what I'm told is a fantastic Chai latte. The staff were very friendly and couldn't be nicer, we were in Edinburgh for the Sick Children's hospital and our server remembered us from our previous visit and asked after our son. You can't put a price on service like that.

Utterly delightful café with a wide choice of organic teas and delicious soups, baguettes, other soft drinks etc.. Relaxed and quiet for focus or chats. A real find and a nice change compared with noisy national chain cafés.

Don’t know what the foods like but not strong on the coffee and cake front. Nondescript watery coffee and factory made tasteless sugary treats. Sandwiches etc may be ok - did look to be a large selection of pukka tea on offer. 2.5 rating, sad I wasted the calories :(

Absolutely terrible place, terribly sad looking staff, I presume due to the lack of effective management/ownership. Had a problem with beard hair in something I purchased, Dissatisfied doesn't cover it, I believe the French would say Merde. I wouldn't go back here if someone paid me to, the management/owners attitude is vile and repugnant. Only rated as one star because there isn't a zero star option available. Facebook review is on it's way too, once I have managed to depict what's meant to be written about the place the spelling, missuse of correct punctuation and grammar is a reflection of attention to detail used on the premises with regard to general hygiene, lackluster to say the least. On a personal note I can't stand to have my intellect or honesty questioned by a person who lacks the ability to tell the difference in use of the words "whether" and "weather", spell check or predictive text may have made sure the words were correct in terms of spelling but it clearly didn't help the owner in use of context. I believe cafe Florentine is owned by the same ignoramus, so will not be recommending a visit there either. I presume that daddy funded these business ventures as clearly the owner is not scholastic enough to have raised the equity required to create this facade of their own accord. I hope the reader finds this review valuable. Regards jock
