A fabulous Christmas meal, with efficient and friendly service. Just what we've come to expect from the Salt and Barrel. It never disappoints. Well done everybody.

The salt and barrel is a training restaurant located within the Ayrshire college, the decor is beautiful and has pictures of the old johnnie walker factory which was on this site originally. It was our first visit here and we were extremely impressed to say the least. It could give a Michelin star restaurant a run for its money. Everything ran like clockwork, everyone was polite, well organised and the food was amazing. I would have given It more points but we had ordered 3 chicken burger and only got 2 chicken and 1 beef so thats why I marked it down. The food was delicious and the portion sizes were fantastic especially for the price. The desserts were amazing, it has to be the best brownie I have ever eaten. They also do special events like afternoon tea and bingo, etc so check out there Facebook page. Everyone must try this place as its fantastic, we will be back!

We were a party of 4 and we ate vegetarian. I cannot imagine how any of the West of Scotland's Michelin-rated eateries could have bettered our meal. As you can see from other reviews, this is Ayrshire College's training restaurant. Well, you need to know that because you wouldn't spot it from simply going and having a meal. The kitchen is superb; what emerges is professionally made, assembled, cooked and presented. The front of house is keen, calm and works to a professional standard. On of our party sought to disrupt matters by periodically throwing cutlery on the floor but young Ed wasn't at all phased. I'll add a special mention - given the nature of the place - to the supervising staff, those front of house and in the kitchen. Watching and listening to them at work revealed an object lesson in how tom administer support in a light-handed manner. And if you go there and the 3-cheese lasagne (home-made pasta) is on the menu - GO FOR IT!

My sister and I came here for the first time today . We are not local to Kilmarnock so it's a bit tricky to find the college . Once we found it , the restaurant is on the ground floor of the college .From our arrival we were met with very friendly staff and the students were friendly and keen to help. We were delighted with the decor and the choices on the menu. It is very reasonably priced with £3 for starter, £6 for main course and £3 for dessert. The students cook the food amd also serve and "wait"on the tables. Our food was lovely and portions a good size. We had Prawn Tempura, Beef Fiajita and Sticky toffee dessert. All were very good , though some could have been a bit warmer . You are asked to complete a feedback form when you leave . We will definitely return and would hope the college continues to operate this facility .

Really, really good pricing, staff are ridiculously friendly, and the food was awesome. I went again the same week for more. There isn't a huge selection on the menu, but this makes sense as it's part of the college. I'll definitely be back!

These kids are immense. The food is lovely. feedback is saught after tohelp them improve and learn. The waiting staff can be a little nervous, never discourteous, but always....always helpful and pleasant. Highly reccomend this place. Their prices can't be bested either.

This is a lovely relaxing place to be. Attentive service from students + lots of lovely food to try. As it'spart of KilmarnockCollege prices are very reasonable so you can enjoy all three courses and alcohol free cocktails. Phone and book a table for later in September.

Great friendly atmosphere & staff are great really would be worth advertising on Radio no meny ppl know hopefully if they get round to it. They'd have lots more clientele after all few m minutes on radio xx more ppl would hear about in x

I would highly recommend this place! Had a delicious Christmas lunch today at Salt and Barrel, as part of a group of 14 ladies. The food served was excellent, as was the service. Everyone was very efficient and most welcoming. It was great value, at £15.50 for a most beautifully presented five course meal. This was my first visit to Salt and Barrel and I hope to visit again. Well done to all involved.

Food was fabulous and the service ( by the students) attentive but not intrusive. This place was so good I'm reluctant to recommend it in case I can never get a table again!

Considering the staff are trainees the service was great, the food was good and the prices so reasonable I will be back again.

We go to salt & barrel with friends & have never had a bad meal. The young people do a fabulous job serving the tables & chat about their jobs & the food.

Lunch here was enjoyable and well presented with the students coping well with a busy service. Would visit again.

We had an excellent lunch at Christmas, and thoroughly enjoyed the menu selection. The staff (who are all training) were courteous, friendly and very helpful. It is advisable to book, as it can be quite busy.

Having promised ourselves a meal here since it opened, we eventually made it today. What can I say. . . Food excellent, service excellent, restaurant immaculately clean. From entering the doors to leaving everything was superb. Will definitely be back. Would advise booking as opening hours are restricted, these guys are in training but the service is second to none!

Hello folks, after hearing some good rumours about a restaurant in the new Kilmarnock college grounds, we decided to investigate, subsequently arriving at the said restaurant, we were asked if we had booked, a bit puzzled we said no, but they found us a table (strongly advise booking now) anyway some smartly dressed students arrived and handed out the menu and asked what we wanted to drink (no alcohol at that time) soft drinks were ordered and promptly delivered, meal orders we very professionally taken and before long our meals were placed on our table, again very professionally (remember these guys n' gals are in training) so to finish this review, the food was very good, we left the restaurant pleased with our wee sojourn to the "Salt & Barrel" If you decide to try remember to telephone and book due to the restrictions on opening times.
