Salam in Middlesbrough

The food here is very good, you have to wait a while for it though. Service is polite but slow. The real negative is that they give you a menu to order from but when you go to pay they have a menu with higher prices. It wasn't expensive but they need to be clear and honest in business.

Fantastic food. My favourite restaurant in Teesside. It's not a vegan/veggie place, but it's completely safe to eat here if you are. They know what vegan means (not just pick the bits of chicken out!). Superb.

First time having Ethiopian food and all I can say is so glad I tried it. Food was packed full of amazing flavour. Absolutely recommend this place, very laid back atmosphere.

First time trying Ethiopian cuisine and I’m so glad we finally tried it.We ordered a sharing platter for two.The food took awhile to be served but it’s because Salam cooks everything fresh.Additionally their portion is huge.The platter came with lots of meat variety and we had to eat it with the injera which is the flat bread.The flat bread is so soft, taste a bit sour but when eating it with meat options that we had ordered the combination worked so well together.Hence it’s a 10/10 for me. Afterwards we ordered traditional Ethiopian coffee.The coffee tasted so good with the ginger power and they do not have any milk in their coffee.The coffee came with popcorns that are freshly made.Overall it’s a 10/10 for me as well. The highlight for me was the staff working that night, they were brilliant.After she found out we were trying Ethiopian food for the first time she got so excited and she took the time to explain everything to us, which we really appreciated. The only thing that everyone should be aware is that Salam only accepts cash.So made sure you have cash in hand with you.If not you’re welcomed to make your way to Sainsbury to withdraw cash. I would highly recommend everyone to come and try Ethiopian food with Salam.

Great, tasty food but they MADE UP PRICES which were higher than on the menu and didn't provide a receipt.

The food was delicious. We've been here a couple of times, it's always good. The portions are generous and the variety of options is great too. Something for both vegeterians and meat lovers. The whole place looks very cosy. The staff are super nice and welcoming. I love coming back here.

Don't expect a smooth restaurant experience if you visit, more a safari picnic. Service is lacklustre and sparse, with even attempting to pay someone and leave being a challenge. Don't expect a knife and fork either as finger food from a large round tray is the order of the day. It WAS quite tasty I have to say but a bit pricey at £30 for 2. Drinks range is very limited mainly to bottles or cans (no glass unless you ask or have a short). The female staff, when seen, were pleasant and friendly but could have been a little better at explaining food choices in english. I had to close the door a few times to keep warm after the comings and goings of staff friends or relatives leaving it open. Overall, we won't be going back but wish them the best.

Me and my boyfriend had the vegetarian dish 'bebaynetu' with the Ethiopian flatbreads. It was absolutely delicious. We would like to thank the friendly staff there who recommended the meal for us as it was our first visit there. We felt welcomed. And the traditional ceremonial coffee with the ginger was divine. We will definitely go there again.

A new experience in dining, who doesn't love that? Fermented wraps as cutlery and a myriad of colours. Tasty, not too expensive and will be back

Probably the worst food and experience we’ve ever had. Like others have said they make up the priced to rip you off. When we paid the bill they basically guessed the price which was at least £10 more than the menu price.

Absolutely delicious meal and wonderful staff, will be back very soon! Definitely one of our new favourite restaurants in Teesside.

First time trying out Ethiopian cuisines … The food is not too bad (I do prefer Indian and Turkish) and reasonably priced and their coffee is super delicious and a must try … I’m sure we will come back here again to try other dishes …

Amazing vegetarian food! We ordered the vegetarian platter for 2. It was big enough for 3/4 people or 2 very hungry people. The meal was absolutely delicious, we all enjoyed it. We were very impressed overall and would fully recommend!

This is one of THE best restaurants in Middlesbrough! The staff were very welcoming and helpful. The atmosphere was very beautiful from the music to the decorations. The waiting times were great (and they were worth it). The portion size was perfect. I ordered the Keyh tibsi. The lamb was succulent and perfectly cooked. The onions, spices and salad went perfectly with the slightly sour injera. The hygiene was great. 10/10 I would recommend to anyone in Middlesbrough.

Lovely food, thoughtful and friendly staff. The vegetarian dishes are all vegan friendly and taste amazing. The restaurant itself was beautifully decorated and a wonderful experience. Highly recommend visiting if you're in Middlesbrough.

Pros: - amazing food - very tasty and filling - good music - great sense of culture and belonging - decorations were authentic and beautiful - servers had good service. Cons: - service was a little slow but there was only 2 members of staff on our visit.

Not bad value for money, a lot of food, nice variety. Intriguing cuisine. Very nice if you're looking for something different and an authentic African experience. It is Ethiopian and Eritrean cuisine. They have quite a lot going for vegetarians. There isn't really parking but there is a large car park very nearby. Unfortunately they are not serving alcohol at the moment.

Best Injara I've ever had. The stews and salads were lovely, the injara wasn't too sour. The waitresses were really friend and the tea was great. Paired with a beautiful atmosphere filled with lots of cultural items. It was a really lovely night. Thank you staff! I'll be back!

Amazing food! We had the Salam Special which is five selected dishes served with injera. Absolutely delicious, would highly recommend. The dorho particularly stood out as the star of the dish.

We went to this beautiful restaurant to a habesha ሕጸ and it was bless. Excellent customer service and the staff were very friendly. We had ጻዕዳ ጥብሲ and traditional coffee I love this spot. Definitely recommend to every one to try the East African test.

Absolutely love this place. Really attentive staff, warm and inviting atmosphere. The food is so cheap and incredibly tasty and different. There's a great variety of dishes for meat eaters, vegetarians and vegans. Will be going back here often!!

The best Eritrean food in the area

Service - what service. 1:45 minutes from ordering to receiving food and close to 2 hours in freezing temperature. Food was cold to tepid on arrival. Oh and the female toilets out of order. All seven of us left after refusing to eat cold food. The charges us £24 for eating nothing and my idiot family paid. Oh and take a glance at the ceiling - it's pitted with yellow grease on tiles

Beatiful place in Middlesbrough a touch of Ethiopian culture warm friendly staff and lovely service. Food was incredibly beautiful home made style and plenty of extras price was very reasonable. Intimate setting aromatic smells waft through the air. great for family freinds groups or couples can not recommended this place enough. Will definitely be going back and recommending this place to others.

I glanced at this place as I quickly exited my car and dashed across the road to the shops. What is a 'habesha' restaurant I thought? A hour later I was hungry, and it was lunch time (a bit late actually 1330 but I digress). I wonder if that strange named place is open? So my 10 year old son & I wondered over. Good news they were doing lunch (as far as I can work out the daytime menu is the same as the evening one). Reading the menu didn't really offer me any clues as to the ethnic origin of the menu. The decor of the place was clearly North African, but not Mediterranean north. I would just have to ask! Ahhh it's Ethiopian. The pleasant young Woman who served me was surprised that I would come into a place without knowing what I was going to eat. But hey in for a penny! The menu was full of things I had never heard of. Great! We plumped for mixed platter for 2. I find that when trying out a new style of food then a 'meze', 'thali' or 'tappas' theme is best. Lots of varied small pieces. I loved the fact that we were not given cutlery but given a friendly explanation in how to use the supplied bread to eat the food. I cook a bit myself. I can say that this was the best meal I have had in ages. The style reminded me of Middle Eastern and Persian cooking. You could really taste the influences coming from across the gulf. Cardamon & Dried limes were a strong flavoure in a couple of the dishes. There was a little spice. But not too much. The tabboule was lacking enough mint for my taste. But no one can agree what makes a perfect tabboule anyway! If you are looking for a quick lunch, this place is not for you. But if you are looking for something different that takes a wee bit of time & effort to cook then this is the place for you. Oh and try the mint drink. It wasn't what I ordered, that was lemonade. But some mistakes are worthwhile. 😀
