Popped into the Rutland for lunch on a Friday, after visiting Cambridge for a hospital appointment. Service was excellent and our food soon arrived. I had the vegetarian burger and my partner had the ham, eggs and chips. Both were well cooked and tasty. We then took our drinks and sat on the sofa before the open log fire, it was so nice and no one disturbed us (could have stayed all afternoon!). A very pleasant venue and we will come back soon.

On arrival the hotel was freezing, it was -2 outside and felt the same inside. The radiator was off in the bedroom, which we turned on whilst we went to eat. The food was ok and service was pleasant. No hot water in any tap in the morning and had a 4 hr drive ahead. Not acceptable in today’s world.

There is a lot wrong with this hotel. But it is an old characteristic building, so a lot can be played down to that. However, service and cleanliness is not something that can be blamed on the same thing. The people here have no hustle whatsoever. The reception desk told us to wait to be seated for breakfast whilst she continued her conversation with the waitress for 10 minutes. Only then were we offered a table. The breakfast itself wasn’t too bad, minus the toast being completely burnt and still served to us, along with overdone eggs. What let it down were the empty juice and water jugs, cracked drinking glasses if you’re lucky to be given one, and dirty plates, bowls and mugs. I understand that this isn’t the Ritz, but for £120 a night you expect at least something to resemble a decent stay. There were dead flies stuck on the window seal and the bed was full of broken springs. The only good thing was the bacon.

We stayed here as we were going to Newmarket nights to see Madness . Perfect really. Nicely situated for drinks and food beforehand. The shuttle bus picks up almost outside the hotel. Great night at the racecourse. Shuttle bus back. Few drinks on return, then a pizza. Great night sleep. Unfortunately missed breakfast. My fault. Would definitely recommend.

I travel to Nemarket every week for almost 1.5 years now staying 3 nights a week i have experienced stay in pretty much most of the hotels in Newmarket but by far the best is the Rutland and this is down to many factors: Staff are just awesome friendly and professional Rooms have a certain charm that only mirrors the quirkiness of the building and history Food is awesome never had complained about All in all this is my home from home and the team go out their way to ensure im looked after, i totally appreciate everything they do, I am not a demanding returning guest but it is clear regardless of your first visit or your 40th visit you are treated as being speacial. All the staff just go that extra mile for you and my first choice and has been is Rutland when i can get booked in, although it can be difficult around race times however the team do what they can to squeeze me in. So all in all 5 star, one little very small criticism would be would love a larger TV's in the rooms but from what i can see you have already started to address that.. so probably not so much of a criticism now. I highly recomend to stay here when in Newmarket.

My partner and i popped into the rutland hotel today for coffee as we enjoy the chocolate brownies you recieved with your hot drinks. The front bar was busy and warm and cosy. Staff were helpful and friendly. After our coffee we asked for a menu and we ordered the cajun chicken ciabatta served with rocket and mayo and chips(£7.50). When it arrived it was served with a smile by a friendly young lady and it tasted amazing. Service, and food very good. The reason i didnt give it a 5 star was because the tables werent cleared very quick but i felt the hotel needed more staff on.

Just a one night stay in this lovely old hotel in the centre of Newmarket. The car park is at the rear of the hotel and once found although a little tight safely parked. Reception is large and impressive and the lady who checked me in polite and efficient. Room 147 was quite an adventure to find upstairs, left, right, up more stairs over a connecting walkway, downstairs, turn right and there it was! Nicely equipped with all I needed, a comfy better, nice and warm, everything operational just tired! I ate in the bar (restaurant not open) the fish and chips were nice but at £14.95 expensive enough as was the sorbet at £6.00! Breakfast was very nice with a nice selection of cereals, pastries and of course a full English if required. I understand the hotel has been taken over and is going to get refurbished - that’s exactly what it needs. Don’t forget your token to get out of the car park when you leave!

We had booked thro virgin experiences and our room was up 3 flights of stairs , we did see another room being cleaned as we were leaving and if staying again would definitely upgrade. However the room we were in was fairly spacious and every effort had been made within the constraints , there was a large fan which we used as the room was stifling but the window was not openable. ( there was also an extra heater , should it have been cold). The information folder with the history of the hotel was informative and interesting. Breakfast was excellent and plentiful . The decor could benefit from a fresh coat of paint in places , and possibly some tiles on the roof ( there appears to be a few damp patches ) to enhance the hotels original features

So. A decir pagamos £148 por una noche de estancia. No es un lugar muy bueno

As a native of the area for the past few years and having seen the Rutland Arms change owners, change styles, change personnel, open a restaurant and close it again I was curious to see what the latest incarnation would be like. My visit is based only on the casual dining experience in the bar area so have no idea what staying here would be like and after eating in the bar will not be rushing to book a room. There were three of us and we ordered, jacket potato with tuna, bacon and brie ciabatta and fish and chips. Of the three offerings only the ciabatta was anyway reasonable. The baked potato clearly had been heated twice making it almost inedible with rock hard pieces to the fore. As for the fish and chips, we were delivered a dark brown batter with a decidedly grey fish beneath the batter, clearly not fresh and to top it off it contained many bones. We complained to the very pleasant waitress who conveyed our thoughts to the chef, his response: 'all fish have bones in them' right on chef! Suffice to say we received no apology(apart from the waitress) or an offer to remove either of the offending items from our bill, Here's a thought to the owners of the Rutland, deliver some decent food, with decent service, running a restaurant is not what you do when you get it right but what you do when you get it wrong!

We visited this Hotel for a light lunch in the bar.I have lived in this town since 1985 and cannot count the millions of times I have eaten here. The Hotel has seen many changes not only in ownership but also in Chefs and waiting staff which is unsurprising over such a span of years. However it sits at the top of Rutland Hill in one of the most prestigious locations and an area steeped with History. However it is a DISASTER and must be a great let down for many visitors. The food was passable ( just ) but the bar staff who were not in the slightest bit busy preferred to natter to each other. The bespectacled waitress whisked my partners plate away whilst I was still eating. When we had waited over 10 mins for the coffee to arrive my partner went to ask about it's progress. The same waitress then snapped 'what coffee 'even though this had been paid for when the order was placed. She then delivered it to our table and banged it down unceremoniously and stormed off with out a word !! My partner spoke to the management there and then as this is not acceptable behaviour towards a customer. An apology for having forgotten would have been fine but there was no chance of that and I felt lucky that it hadn't been thrown at us.I think the Hotel needs to up the waiting staff's training before they lose customers to other hostelries of which there are many !

Stopped here for a bite to eat for lunch with my 2 kids before the dreaded school shoe shop! They offer a 'Shoppers lunch' which I believe was 2 course for £6.99 or 3 course for £7.99. opted for the 2 course. There is a small menu to select from. I had ravioli and lemon meringue pie. The pasta came in a tomato sauce and a small rocket garnish with garlic bread. The lemon meringue was more shop brought then home made but still non the less I enjoyed them (kids ate most of the desert). Kids didn't fancy anything on the kids menu so opted for a cheese and pickle sandwich with chunky chips. The chips were huge and very hot but kept the kids quiet! We sat in the court yard which was a lovely sun trap and away from the busy bit of the high street. You go inside to order the food at the bar. All the staff were kind and helpful, asking for if we required extra plates etc as kids were sharing a sandwich from the snacks menu.I would have happily sat inside as the bar area and adjoining room were nicely decorated etc but we decided to enjoy the fine day. I would def recommend the lunch menu and would opt to eat here again rather then other pubs on the high street.

One of the staff told us that it has been on the market for two years or so. We can only hope that a buyer comes along soon and injects some much needed TLC into this tatty old building.

Visited this so called restaurant on friday 11th September on a one night stay in newmarket. Food was some of the worst ive ever come across in any restaurant ive eaten in! Nachos starter was basically cheap supermarket brand tortillas chips with cheese on them nuked in microwave with a dollop of salsa and sour cream on top! Me and my partner picked at these as we'd had a long drive and were starving by the time we arrived. We thought about cancelling the mains there and then but decided they couldn't be as bad as the starter but we were wrong! My honey mustard chicken was over cooked and dry and whole dish was swimming in sauce making everything soggy! My partners burger was average at best and came with chips that were frozen. Asked after our meal if everything was ok i told the waiter the food was awful and he didnt seem surprised and offered us free desserts which we declined and asked for the bill. We found on the bill that we had been charged £1.65 for a glass of soda water which is ridiculous! After complaining about this aswell the soda water and my main were taken off the bill and we left never to return.

The Rutland has been operating for well over a hundred years and it's truly unfortunate that it is not keeping up to date with the quality of it's food on offer at lunch time. We opted for the shoppers lunch of two courses which looked interesting but the starter, hot mackerel with horseradish cream on a bed of lettuce was tough and overcooked and the main, sausage and leek pie with reconstituted chips the size of iceburgs and peas with gravy was pretty bad with pastry that was rock like and I am not sure if someone had tipped the salt cellar in the gravy but I had to keep drinking water the rest of the afternoon. Lunches at the Rutland were good at one time but have hit an all time low. I don't know about the other menus on offer so won't comment on those but this light lunch was a huge disappointment.

The menu stated it would be served with a roll but the disappointment was that there was no roll, just an anaemic chuck of warmed "French Stick", which would never be accepted in France and anyone who has had the pleasure of eating genuine French bread would not have named this baked confection thus. Having said that, the chef clearly could make a great soup and the service was prompt and friendly, although we did have to ask for soup spoons! Paying was a bit of a problem, too, as the waitress had disappeared so I asked at the hotel reception how I might pay. The waitress was retrieved after some delay and I was then escorted the length of the building, through the dining room to another area where the card machine proved to be reluctant, so another staff member was fetched from the depths of the building, somewhere behind the scenes, and she was able to print my receipt eventually. My guests meanwhile, waited on a couch in reception, not knowing where the Dickens I had got to. The staff were apologetic & we had a laugh and at least had a good bowl of soup.

The Rutland Hotel is one hotel I visit regularly as I'm a business visitor to the towm. It is a very affordable hotel which I have to take into account. Previously I have given the hotel a good review because whatever minor things which are negative are way outweighed by the positive ones. This time there were two positives and unfortunately one major negative. It's a bit annoying that I was previously an advocate of this hotel. On this occasion, although I booked the room several days in advance, I was given a room on the top floor at the back of the building. The only thing above the room was the roof and the plumbing. It was the plumbing which made itself heard up to about midnight and then from 6 in the morning. It was like being inside a timpani drum. Very annoying. On the plus side the beer was good in the bar - Hoppy Hen at £3 and the breakfast was good, except for the black pud which was way too soft. I will return again as I give everyone a second chance but if it is a repeat of this visit I will be finding a new hotel to stay at. Let's hope it's a glitch...

I loved the choices on the menu. It was nice not to have to go out in the evening to find a decent restaurant. Everything was in one place.

This hotel certainly has charm and is ideally located just a 10 minute walk from the station. The hotel is a bit tardis like and you can have a bit of a walk to your room if you are in a certain part of the hotel. And there lies my rub. The rooms can be mixed. Some I have been given have been charming, but then I once ended up in a tiny cupboard of a room that felt like the servants quarters. However, the breakfast, included in the price is fresh cooked and excellent, the staff are friendly and helpful and the prices are very reasonable, just check what sort of room you have been given.

Having already tried to post this review I've had to re write and try again...We stayed the weekend just gone a group of 8 of us. At around 2pm 4 of the party including myself checked in and were told we could order food at the bar until 3pm. We got to the bar around 2.10 and ordered 3 cokes and 1 vodka and coke and ordered 3 sandwiches and 1 baguette. The girl behind the till didn't have a clue what she was doing and even told us she didn't know how to get the vodka from the bottle. We waited 40 minutes for our drinks, despite other members of staff walking through they quite simply couldn't of cared less. Once the drinks arrived we had an empty glass with no vodka because the girl still couldn't find somebody to do it for her. We waited in total an hour and 10 minutes for our food to arrive, which took up most of our afternoon where by we could of done something in town. We had no apology from the girl or any other member of staff for the wait. By the time we went to bed we were going to shower however there was hair everywhere! So I ended up washing my hair in the bathroom sink. Come morning we ordered our breakfasts but I had hair over my mushrooms and quite frankly by this point just wanted to check out and leave. By all means please contact me via email: Clare.tibble@hotmail.co.uk with your comments on why we relieved such poor service. The hotel wasn't even that busy...

I would have liked to give The Rutland Arms a positive review because it had been recommended to us. Sadly we ended up unfed and hungry. It was lunch-time in December. We half-expected the place to be humming with Christmas shoppers and/or parties. Although the bar was full, the restaurant was empty. We stood and waited to be seated as instructed on a terse notice. And stood some more. Eventually a pleasant but very harassed waitress – she was on her own (why?) - pointed us to a table and disappeared into the bar. We sat and waited. And waited. There was no further human contact, and after what felt like a very long time, we gave up. We went 50 yards along the street to Wildwood which was terrific. We shall go there in future. If you go to The Rutland Arms in the evening, it may be better. It could not be worse.

Comfortable, friendly and handily placed. Downside the pre-ordered bottle of Poo was not waiting for us in our very pleasant attic room. Although it did arrive later once reminded. The restaurant was pleasant, food very tasty (we had the homemade burger. Yum.) Staff vey nice. Parts of the building a little tired. Ashtrays not emptied in the courtyard but overall very happy to return and recommend.

The Rutland Arms requires a serious makeover. Very shabby & dated. Looks like it is living on past glory. Food ok but nothing special. Generally overpriced compared to other pubs, restaurants in the area.

me and my husband stayed here for two nights when we visited four Newmarket races, they didn't tell us when we booked that theres roadworks outside the hotel so we had to run in and find out where their carpark was and we had to go all the way round to parkso if you are due to stay here be aware of this, the hotel was like a maze, you don't think its that big but it was massive, its very nice and clean and staff are friendly but its very old fashioned probably could do with an update but the rooms are spacious and clean but we only went in to go to sleep the breakfast was nice too

I was one of the 9 family members looking for a meeting place in Newmarket following a very successful wedding ceremony. We had all dinned very well over the previous 2 days and wanted a good outside venue in Newmarket (we were staying in various B&Bs around Newmarket) before taking off for different parts of the South. It was extremely hot and sultry and no-one wanted too much to eat ( a blessing in disguise). The outside tables and courtyard at the back of the hotel were ideal. The restaurant staff could see us from the bar area (open door); not that it made any difference..Whenever we left the table and approached them they took our orders but never came of their own volition to give real service. The limited orders for food that we gave were served promptly but the standard was 1960's Britain. The fajitas were bland, and the chips one step off cremated! The haddock was passable. At one time, a man in a shirt passed within 15 feet of the table and shouted in his stride 'everything alright' without waiting for a reply: I am not surprised that the standard is 1960'swhilst the staff were polite and cheerful, With planning, I would not go there again.

I'm torn between average and very good as it's neither; it's good but not great. Having said that, on the whole I enjoyed my meal, very tasty seabass but with the most bizarre fondant potato I've ever eaten. It was more like a jacket potato with the skin taken off and it was huge. The service was quite casual, there was very little atmosphere and although the building is beautiful it promises more than it gives. So it's ok and the food's not overpriced but there are other places to eat in Newmarket and next time i'll try one of them.

I’ve been coming here for 5 years—during the pandemic —and it’s always a must-visit, even straight from Heathrow. The Big Daddy burger with an extra patty, the salted caramel milkshake, and the cheesy fries? Absolutely smacks as they say in England! The owners are not just lovely, they’re incredibly affable and go the extra mile to make sure we’re comfortable—including our doggos, Lévy and Zora, who get as much attention as we do! It’s that kind of place where both the food and hospitality keep bringing you back. Highly recommend for anyone who appreciates quality, warmth, and great service.
