Went to a near by event and stayed in Dorchester, we were very lucky finding this pub on the morning we were leaving as we had an amazing cooked breakfast each. Food was really tasty and we didn’t have to wait long for them to bring it out considering it was quite busy. Thanks 10/10

I used the Royal Oak as part of a group of four to grab dinner whilst in Dorchester for an overnight stay. The pub was very busy (we did have to clean our own table before we could sit down and we noticed a few other uncleaned tables) but our food arrived reasonably quickly once we'd all ordered (although one of our party did have to wait a litttle longer for his curry to arrive, but they were given an apology when it arrived). The food was pleasant and at £11.68 for a burger and a pint, I don't think you can really complain.

From the road this Weatherspoon pub hides a big interior. The staff were friendly and welcoming. We enjoyed our meal and would visit again. You really need to sit down about half an hour before you want to order as there is so much information on the table that it is easy to miss something and wish that you had ordered it instead. At several other Weatherspoon pubs when I have tried to order the fresh fruit dessert option we have been advised that it was unavailable, full marks to The Royal Oak for actually providing it and very tasty it was too.

Popped in on Easter Monday about 17.45. It was busy but tables available, no booking required. I had a mixed grill which was served quickly and was tasty. I thought it was very good value at £13.92 and this included an alcoholic drink. There was plenty on the menu for all tastes. I do not often go to a Wetherspoons but was very surprised at the value for money and service. The toilets were very clean and tidy. I would happily return if I am back in the area.

Stopped here for a few hours on a cold February Saturday night to meet with friends. Place was rammed as expected but the place is rather small so it was difficult to find a table. We got lucky though and eventually sat down for some food and drinks. Bar staff friendly and helpful, food arrived in lightning quick time but the chicken in the burger was a bit too undercooked (nothing terrible though and still nice). Drinks are good value but the pub is just a bit too small though. Would probably return on a quieter day.

Ok so I will say we never had any food but we stayed in here for about two hours and enjoyed the terrific priced beer, wines etc. When the four of you are able to get a pint of Doombar, San Miguel and two large glasses of white wine for just £10 you know you are onto something very good. We saw many people around us having food and although its only my view the food did look very good with large portions. No one we saw had any complaints and simply ate all the food on offer. We just sat there soaking in the atmosphere and if we are ever in Dorchester again we would come here again in a heartbeat!! Friendly efficient staff and service.

This Wetherspoons has gone downhill since our last visit a couple of years ago. The menu was more limited than previously and there were fewer offers. The main issue is the lack of cleanliness. Staff struggle to clear tables and there appears to be little effort to clean between customers. I had to scour the premises to find condiments. The Dorchester branch is not as bad as Chard and Weymouth but is catching up. It will probably be another 2 years before we try it again.

Sometimes it's ok but often chaotic and never somewhere i'd recommend even my worst enemies. The staff, most of them do a really good job in difficult circumstances they should have more support from head office. Clearly there's is cost saving not to employ more staff. Some other staff members do not have a clue and this is unfortunate - some really basic skills (and training) they are lacking. They are also understaffed. I'm sorry they have to deal with so many ungrateful and unappreiciative customers. Tables are often piled high with dirty plates or glasses, windows festooned with various promotional offers. Families and their children are running riot or making a whole lot of noise and mess - the type of parents who think this type of thing is acceptable. Food over the tables, on the floor, carpets wearing thin and in general the interior looking tired and in desperate need of a refurbishment. You'll need to be aware of coming here on market day or (wednesday) or close to or over the weekend. Often full of teenagers or large groups all shouting at each other and drunk. Best to stay away if you don't like that kind of thing

Popped in to meet a friend so only had a coffee, ample outside seating, but we opted for indoors to be sure of the weather.Ordering slightly confusing, I am old fashioned and registered blind so the dark carpets and several poorly highlighted steps and stairs could be better but not impossible to use.Having got to the till was told to go back to the table we were sitting at and someone would take the order there (we had been sitting for about 20 minutes before, but no one had offered to take an order) sat back down and the same person I had seen came to our table and took the order and money. A couple minutes later another person brought hot empty cups to our table (?) was then told to go back up the stairs to the till where there was a selectable style coffee machine.Drinks were very good, excellent value and as many refills as you want, personally I have never been in favour of this because during busy periods it just clogs up with (usually) single people on 4 or 6 table seating.Recommended but the system to get coffee seems slightly confusing.

Its a spoons and my local, friendly staff cheap drinks. Food can be a bit hit and miss but generally it is what it is and the price reflects this. Sadly what let's this pub down is its tired deco and its slightly grubby feeling when tables are left with previous customers plates and glasses. The tables sometimes feel sticky and the floor can have dropped food on it. I think this pub is a victim of it's own success it's too busy and the staff don't seem to have time to keep on top of clearing tables etc, it's a shame because it let's it down. This pub could really benefit from a make over and perhaps a better table clearing system. It wouldn't take much to make it a better.

The Royal Oak as it exists now consists of three buildings knocked together in a muddled manner that makes navigating it rather an interesting experience. The buildings are arranged such that it was not possible for Wetherspoons to create the large open spaces that they prefer, so the pub consists of several rooms of various sizes, each forming distinct and discrete units. The main building is the original Royal Oak, an 18th century coaching inn with an archway leading to what were the stables. The pub was acquired by the Eldridge Pope brewery whose two most famous beers were Thomas Hardy Ale and Royal Oak. Their EP & Co symbol is still on the building. The two additional buildings are red bricked houses.

We visited on a very busy weekend and feel Victoria deserves a mention on this review, it was busy and there appeared to be some very difficult customers causing problems, all those aside, she kept a positive attitude with a great sense of humour. She was very knowledgable on Gins too which my wife loved. My wife seems to have jumped on the band wagon of Gin and Victoria spent a good 5 minutes going through all the gins and what would best compliment what, that’s the kind of service that’s hard to find especially in anywhere busy.

Generally I like Wetherspoons, my favorite being in Lymington, Hampshire. However, The Royal Oak was so bad, it may have put me off for life! We went on curry night and I selected my gluten free curry and went and sat at our dirty table. We waited 20 minutes or so and it gave me lots of time to take a close look at our surroundings. Most of the tables were dirty and the floor too seemed particularly uncleen. The decor was tired and shabby and not in a chic way, the building it self had a kind of old time grand elegance about it, but it had certainly seen better days. When at last the food arrived I was somewhat taken aback at how small my serving was! No nan as that contained gluten, rice and curry were very average. When I left I was still feeling hungry! By the time I arrived home 10 minutes later, that had changed and I spent most of the night in the bathroom and could not go to work the next day! Not food poisoning, gluten contamination which for a celiac like me, can be just as bad or even worse! Needless to say, we will not be returning!

My partner and I visited for a meal. Ordered our drinks and mains via the Wetherspoons app and had our drinks promptly delivered by a friendly staff member with a white goatee. Shortly after we had our mains delivered, perfect temperature and delicious. The atmosphere was great, not overly loud or awkwardly quiet. Despite being a Wetherspoons, the staff were as welcoming and friendly as an independent pub.

Good menu (including for vegetarians - ask for the special menu), great ales and porters, terrific value for money and areas where you can sit quietly, away from TVs.

Visited The Royal Oak Dorchester this evening. Very Dissapointed with our meals. Served cold, the Lamb Shank and Sirloin Steak chips and peas. Sent the meals back and the Lamb was hotter but the steak was now well done not medium as ordered, plus the chips and peas were colder than first served, I know it’s not Al la carte establishment and good value for money but cold food is unforgivable. Plates cold did not help. So t. E visiting again and can’t recommend to our guests.

Me and my daughter has a meal at least 2-3 times a week. New menu was on offer so decided to have the cottage pie with peas. When it came was very shocked how small it was, my 2 yr old grandson would have loved and eaten it all but for a adult it was way too small, I would love to have it again but for £4.99 it’s a joke for what u get.

Visited twice both times excellent customer service especially our 2nd visit for drinks before departing to Weymouth on bus. The gentleman who served us was professional and made everyone he served feel special. He had a wonderful engaging manner with customers and with other members of staff. The ambiance was wonderful

From our experience Dorchester seems to be short of pubs that do food at lunchtime - as a consequence this Wetherspoons was full with diners of all ages – we shared the starter deal of 3 dishes for £10 - prawns and chicken with dips - good hot and satisfying - beer excellent - service at bar a bit hit and miss as the young staff were either more interested in each other or their phones - or am I just old and grumpy - never mind - food + beer + price = good experience - thank you…..

After visiting the Dinosaur Museum my boys and I walked into Dorchester to get something to eat and drink. The Royal oak is part of the Wetherspoons chain and as such is cheap and cheerful. We all 3 of us ordered the "ultimate" burger that came with drinks included and got a big plateful of food, chips and onion rings accompany the burger that was all VERY reasonably priced and delicious in equal measure. didn't have to wait to long for it to be served up either which is always a bonus!

Just called in for snack and drinks on a Friday lunchtime at 1:45. Being "fish Friday" it was quite busy, and we had to seek out a table for four which we located in quite a dark area adjacent to the bar. It's not the most comfortable or attractive Wetherspoons we've ever been in. It's a little gloomy and rather cramped, but it fills a need. As did the paninis we all had which were good value, and served quickly.

Food very nice. Staff friendly. More attention to keeping water dispenser topped up would be good but in their defence it was busy so more than one machine might be a good idea.

We called in for a drink and ended up staying for supper. The staff were so very friendly and helpful. There is a gluten free menu and a dairy free menu available which could be advertised more. The pub was clean and the atmosphere was very friendly with a mixture of adults and families. The garden area was a suntrap and there was a ramp for buggies and wheelchairs to use. The wine was served very cold which suits me well. The food was freshly cooked and plentiful. This is good value, straight forward food. The disabled loo was very clean and easy to access.

OK food served reasonably quickly for a Friday evening. Staff were all great. Drinks good with excellent choice of ales. Two adults and two kids all enjoyed their meals without being blown away. Will return when next in Dorchester.

Visited with two friends on a quiet Thursday afternoon. Inside is very clean but the atmosphere is dead, no music just quiet chitter chatter. It’s really good that they have made sure that all outside seating isn’t overwhelmed by cigarette smokers. However, where they do allow smokers is the entrance where you can enjoy a cigarette with the chef who would have cooked your food, for that reason we decided not to order food and eat elsewhere not great! Violet gin is worth a try though

Great value for money and good staff. However in the non smoking area outside the floor is covered with cigarette buts. Big turn off when you are eating. Last week 3 people were smoking in this area and a member of staff did tell them to stop.

The perfect overnight stay in Dorchester, passing through. An excellent price. Central to all amenities, other pubs and nearby fish and chips and the river. Host, Chris, was welcoming and friendly and helpful when asking questions about the nearby areas. Our room was neat and well presented. Overall the atmosphere in the pub itself was friendly and warm. A classic pub and inn!

Visited the Fun Factory on a rainy day with my baby. To book in, other children in the waiting area were running into his pram. The gates were hard to open. Upon arrival, we were told, that the only available tables were upstairs and there was no lift! I had to carry the baby and pram up the stairs. Walking through the downstairs department was like trying to run through a jungle. We finally got to our table which was covered in what looked like chewed food and saliva and all over the chairs too. I am aware that soft play areas are noisy but this was more than that. I took the baby down to play in the under 3's section which was a tiny cage. There weren't many activities for him to play with. The baby mirror in there was dirty, the ball pit was over crowded. To get on the slide, it was a climb and with a baby, it proves impossible. Older children were coming in the baby section and scaring him and leaving the gate open which I was furious about. The sensory toys were broken. A 7 year old girl was in there throwing balls at him too and I had a go at her mum and told them to get out. I told a member of staff and they did nothing about it. He also had some lunch there which looked cheap and processed. You could literally see the fat dripping off it. You are apparently allowed to take the babies in the older children's play area but I was straight away put off when i saw the filth on some of the children's socks and the rate they were running around! In order to make this a better place you really need to add a lift, make a better play area for babies, get friendlier and more helpful staff, healthier food, clean the place and maybe even give it a revamp, buy more toys for the baby area and in general make it more appealing. Until Fun Factory up their game, I'm certainly not going back. Unless you want your babies to have a day of being in the worst play area of all time, don't come here!

Was all set to enjoy a coffee in my favourite Costa ( see review Jan 23 ) when I witnessed the best example of managerial skill I have ever seen . I imagine that the customer in question may have underlying social problems . He was unbelievable rude - over a cookie . The abuse that staff were subjected to because they had unfortunately sold out was totally disproportionate. Sir , get a life . Staff , well done for the calm and professional way you handled an extremely unpleasant situation !

I Had a family evening with cocktails to start, unfortunately they had not a clue how to serve or make these,by a friendly young girl, the food was the worst i have had for a long time, and although i told the elderly lady she seemed to listen but shrug it off with no effect, totally overpriced for what we had ,very small meals, missing the main ingredient FOOD.I hope they can improve and get a barman in to make the cocktails, they need to be shaken, not just pored!!

Large chip portions are large ! Cash only. Curry sauce was slightly thin perhaps compared to Northern chippies. Prices are ok for a touristy town
