Royal Garden Chinese Restaurant in Croydon

This used to be a nice place before they expanded and got too greedy. If you are just a couple, you get shoved in a corner, and serve you after everyone else, even if you booked and other tables with more than 4 people arrive after you!! We even got followed outside by the owner who told us 'we close at 11' it was just 11 and, other people were leaving after us and got a thank you. That was the last time we went there, and the friends I introduced to the place also never went there again. It's their loss because we spent heaps of money there.

Chinese restaurant with beautiful hilly landscape. Wide, very tasty vegan choice, helpful and knowledgeable staff.

My first time visiting Royal Garden and I was blown away. The food was outstanding, the best Chinese food I’ve had in my life. The service was also brilliant. I will definitely be returning in the future. They even gave me a cake on the house because it was my birthday. 10/10!

Wow what can I say .. their website prices must be 10 years old.. unbelievable high prices in this place.was there for 50th birthday treat and was first in the restaurant with no other customers around.3 of us ordered and within 5 minutes our starters was ready ?? Fresh no ? This afternoons left overs ? Yes definitely! Tasteless bland and a con.. oh and 3 times the price it says online than when you get there.

I really don't know why this place doesn't have a better Google rating. We came for my mum's birthday and all the staff were really warm, welcoming and efficient. All of our food came out promptly, it was all delicious with fresh and vibrant flavours. There was also a great dessert selection and generally lots of options for vegetarians/vegans. Slightly pricier per person than your average, but that hasn't deterred me from coming back again. I would say it's the nicest Chinese I've had, and it has revived my liking for Chinese food. Would highly recommend the crispy fried duck!

disgusted in how one of the staff members were yesterday when we called up to mention the portion, she sounded very much sarcastic and said some stuff about us complaining and "blah blah blah" and the said their colleague "packed it", i'm so sorry, i mean, who else was going to pack our food?? anyway, wasn't satisfied at all. paid practically £40 to have food to barely feed a person.

I had an order for delivery and the portions were half a tub…. that’s a small tub!!!! The food wasn’t warm considering they said half an hour. It tasted like they just added water to a left over curry. The Sweet and sour they could have packed in a beans tub (the slightly bigger one from KFC) I paid a huge price for small amount of food. When I called and complained I heard the conversation of the person talking to someone in the background saying “why would someone say that the portions are too small’” then there was laughing and other words I couldn’t make out. Well because they were!!!!!!! I will never order from this place again! So don’t say you weren’t warned folks!!

Absolutely fantastic restaurant! The food is delicious and they cater to all dietary requirements. Great portions, great service and even better taste! I have been coming here for years, with friends and family as they cater to all, and because it’s that good. Rachel is wonderful too! Would recommend this place a million times to anyone!

The portions are very tiny. Most of the dishes only mainly contain vegetables and small amounts of protein. For example, sweet and sour prawns dish did not have that many prawns and was mostly sauce and peppers. We were all very thirsty afterwards as well

#####DO NOT EAT HERE##### Spend £52 on a takeaway and not 1 but 4 hairs in our chicken curry. Had to chuck all of the food away as it made us feel sick. Obviously a lack of hygiene there. We called up expecting to be offered a refund. Only to be met with a rude person only offering another chicken curry as a solution, which we quickly declined. Real shame as the food has been good there over the years but has gone down hill. STAY AWAY. Since me leaving this review the royal garden has responded and just to make it clear you was not professional in how you dealt with the issue of hairs found in my food. At no point was a refund offered only a replacement dish which after feeling physically sick when seeing the four hairs in curry I obviously declined and ALL the food went in the bin ! Your response to my honest review is very disappointing and anyone can tell there is clearly a lack of hygiene on your premises and the way you deal with complaints needs seriously looking at. Had a take out. Im in shock. The portions are rediculously small. Chips were like cardboard. The prawn fried rice (although a decent size) contained 4 prawns. I won't be ordering from here again.

The food arrived so quickly. It said it would be at least an hour, but it arrived in less than 45 minutes. The food was also delicious! Amazing vegetarian options for me and my partner!

Soooo disappointed with our meal tonight. Use the restaurant regularly and so happy to recommend to family we had round this evening for our first take away tonight. Food arrived late and barely warm, nothing like the quality we’ve come to expect in the restaurant. Crispy chilli beef was tasteless, king prawn balls unrecognisable. Not worth the £125 we spent, it will be our last take away from here.

Our search for a good local Chinese restaurant scored another hit this evening at the Royal Garden at the top of Shirley Hills. The food was delicious and the service excellent. Can highly recommend the duck. Fantastic. We'll be back.

Had a lovely dinner there on Sunday. Food was fantastic. I’ve been vegan for a few years now and this place has the best vegan selection I have seen in a Chinese restaurant. The vegan sweet and sour mock chicken and Peking duck was a highlight. My wife non vegan and children also had meat dishes and loved the food. Will 100% be going back.

I have been to this restaurant several times, and the quality of food is amazing, they have never dropped their standard. The staff are lovely, and the atmosphere is so relaxing. It's one of those restaurants that you never want to leave! A really great experience.

We had a lovely time with nice food. The crispy aromatic duck was shredded at the table. I’ve also been here multiple times for lunch, and a walk in the surrounding countryside.

Had dinner with a mate, it was fantastic, food service, etc, maybe a tiny bit pricey but no issues with parking and it bright and clean, the location in the hills at Shirley is always good to walk of the excess food or have a drink in the garden, highly recommend for everything from a business to a family get together, any left you get the option for a takeaway box. Overall I highly recommend this restaurant

Having been to the restaurant many times over the years, I would suggest they get in touch with Gordon Ramsey, because the food was horrendous. Standards have slipped so bad. But went back tonight and was very impressed. The food was very good and service was good. This place is back where it was when Lawrence and Lin, ran the place.

Was our favourite Chinese restaurant until we were moved off our reserved table so that a walk in of 15 people could sit together. We were moved to a table for 2 and expected to squash 4 people on it. We were told there were no other tables as they were reserved, but what about our reservation? Also the restaurant appeared empty. Regular custom obviously means nothing compared to quantity. We will never return.

I always order from this restaurant but I don't know what happened this time as nothing was good, everything tasteless, the food seemed to be reheated several times, the rice looked more like mashed rice, I think they changed the chef so sure we will not order from here again

Lovely location, you can enjoy the sunset at a beautiful platform of Adbington Hill, then head back for the Chinese food. It is a flat road just 3-minute comfortable walk outside the place. Sunset before meal, and star gaze afterwards. We had Cantonese style roasted duck, Cantonese style tofu and salt and pepper chicken. Taste is modified to suit the local appetite so it is not most authentic Chinese style. We had a jasmine tea to balance the deep-fried food. White rice just like many Chinese restaurant here, was slightly expensive (more than 5 pounds) so we did not order any. The hut is a spacious and beautiful space, like a venue for wedding. White table cloth with roses on table. Ended the night with their complementary white chocolate. Had an enjoyable evening. There are many parking spaces outside the restaurant. No worries about parking.

The food is great but I’m a bit fed up with something always missing and not getting the refund for it it’s happened last 2 times I’ve ordered from them lately…

The best takeaway we had in a long time

The resturant is located off the main road into a pitch black dark side road within a woods. There is an led sign on the main road to tell you the resturant is there, otherwise you won't see it. There are no warnings that if you are not travelling by vehicle and instead are walking up the pathway that there are no lights. This is very dangerous for customers. Solar power lights and tree lights could at least be provided along the walk path and a sign at the end of the road to alert safety if you're walking up the pathway. They need to suggest to the street council to provide street lights, as a woman travelling in pitch black darkness to a resturant with 5 minutes walk up an unexpected side road with no lights, other than the light from a phone, creates a terrible experience from the beginning. Even driving through the pathway is also dangerous for drivers, it's like a setting out of a horror film. As a foodie, the food wasn't great, considering the prices being charged. The prices weren't high but the quality in my dish was less then what I'd expect in a local takeaway. This isn't the quality standard I'm used to if I'm going out to eat. The quality was absent like the atmosphere and also, lacked in good quality of natural flavoured ingredients. The pineapple in my dish tasted as if it was from a can. The sweet and sour side sauce tasted highly acidic. Vegetarian options are decent. If you like tofu then there's plenty options. The atmosphere and the deco had a mixture of identities, there is no distinction of who the audience is catered to. The staff tend to awkwardly stare for a while with no reason why, between walking in, before taking orders, and after taking orders, this made me feel uncomfortable. Towards the end the hosting became better. The venue as a whole, including the outside garden, is probably aesthetically pleasing in the summer. However, it's a venue I wouldn't be coming back, due to the reasons listed above.

Delivery man really polite. The food was barely warm, certainly not hot. Had to be re-heated. The chicken in the sweet and sour chicken balls was so tough and dried up, not edible. The Quarter Aromatic Duck was a very small portion. If that was a Quarter it must have been a VERY small duck. Barely enough to make 3 SMALL wraps, certainly not the size a Quarter portion should be. The 'Special Fried Rice' nothing 'special' about it. Mostly rice, very little of the other ingredients, prawns etc. Tasteless. Sorry, I don't like to leave negative reviews but that is the honest truth. Certainly NOT worth the £65.20 we spent. Disappointing

Ordered it 2 hours in advance to arrive at 7:30pm, called the restaurant at 7:50pm to discover that the driver hadn’t even left yet. Food is always delicious but the delivery times are abysmal. Had previous experiences of them not delivering on time, standard delivery times on the app showing 60+ mins but then adding 30min more on with “updated times” once you have already placed the order and are stuck waiti. Will try eating in the restaurant next time but delivery just isn’t an option anymore.

60 minutes on top of the hour originally said. Food turned up stone cold and straight in the bin. Restaurant said they would give a refund that night. Waited 3 days to be told it’s just eat to refund. Just eat sent a £5 voucher. I’m now having to chase just eat instead of them refunding the money. SHAMBLES

Celebrated my Dad's 70th birthday here last night, with 20 of us including kids & a baby. Nothing was too much trouble, the service was impeccable and food delicious. They even gave us a separate table to display his birthday cake and balloon bouquets. Thank you so much for making my Dad's evening feel so special!

Best Chinese restaurant and food in Croydon - by far!

Food arrived very late and was only luke warm - not surprised about that as we rang the restaurant and was told it was out for delivery and would be another 15 minutes.

I love this restaurant! Especially the staff! The server Elise on fridays is awesome and gorgeous!! Is she single?

We often walk in the area and have always felt unwelcome here. We've come by twice and each time we've ordered 2 drinks, usually a starter and we sit outside with our dog. On one occasion a woman behind the bar rudely stopped me from going to the toilet and then another member of staff apologised on her behalf and said I could go. Some of the staff in there seem quite irritated that people would come for just a drink and sit outside. There's a new cafe next door with the friendliest man! He's lovely. Gives off a very different energy to the staff in the restaurant. Additionally, the restaurant feels totally out of place for its location. The aesthetic is confusing, high class Chinese restaurant on the inside but with plastic tables on the outside? All in the middle of a trail area It's generally felt uninviting so we won't return, but we'd happily go to the cafe that's and is attached.

The meal was completely awful really warm ordered soft shell crab one arrived at £9.20 and it taste better. Food was not hot food was not fresh. Ordered the meal at 5:30 and it was at my house by 545. It was awful considering I spent £45 had to complain, because it was so bad getting to the point where I won’t order from them anymore. Everything was just reheated.

Very nice place and tasty food at reasonable prices. There is ample car parking spaces with relaxed atmosphere. The location is ideal Shirley/ Addington Hills Can sit outside with a dog. For lunchtime they are only open on Fridays and weekends.

Although we 3 enjoyed the very nice food (Canton set meal) I think that there is something about the service and atmosphere which leaves room for improvement. Three Tsing Tao beers served up warm (with the excuse that they had come out of the 'wrong' part of the fridge, when a neighbouring table got splendidly chilled beers) and a bottle of warm still water. Capped off by what seems like a 13% service charge added to the bill! Inflation really is rearing its ugly head everywhere!! A bit cheeky if you ask me as the prices are not that cheap!

Surprisingly wholesome food for a takeaway! The veg Singapore rice was especially great. Portions were generous and delivery was friendly and quick- everything arrived nice and hot. Thank you :)

I got all items asked for, the driver was nice and shared a joke regarding the weather and once I’d opened the order I enjoyed the flavours and texture. It was delicious.

Usually an exceptional Chinese but last nights food was awful kung po pork was bone dry and a struggle to eat. Crispy chilli beef was the worst we’ve ever had and the duck didn’t travel well either. Might return but will be a while

Malaysian lamb curry was very good as some other reviewer has said - though a bit small for £10. Chicken satay was dry and tasteless but the rest was pretty good.

I really like the food from here. As a veggie or vegan they have a wide variety of choice with plenty of different vegetables and they don't just bulk up on the cheapest so plenty of flavour and not overcooked either. Wouldn't use another Chinese restaurant in the area now.

Very very pricey now and have had a couple of problems with unusual stuff being found in the food. I do not feel the same about this restaurant as I did three years ago unfortunately. I can’t confidently recommend but on a good day the food is tasty.

We had just intended to go for a walk in Addington Hills for the first time ever and did not expect to find a Chinese restaurant in the middle of the park! The whole experience was hands down the nicest Chinese experience we've ever had, waiting staff were charming and especially Anthony, in particular, deserves a special mention for his positive and friendly energy. Will definitely be back!
