Ordered on line, nice and simple, easy to do. Food was ready on time when I went to collect We had a range of meals, starters and all were nicely cooked, good quantities and tasted lovely. Well worth the money

I had a terrible experience with roots of India recently that I feel compelled to share. After placing and paying for my order online, I received a call from the restaurant informing me that they couldn’t make the Chicken Balti I ordered—at 7:30 PM on a Friday night! How a takeaway runs out of ingredients for such a staple dish at peak time is beyond me. Left with no choice, I had to change my order to a Buna on Puri starter, which is the only other dish I like. Since it’s a dry dish, I requested a small curry sauce to go with it, as I had also ordered chips. The person on the phone gave me the impression that this would be no problem and even mentioned they would reimburse me the difference between the starter and the Chicken Balti for the inconvenience. When I arrived to collect my order at the time stated, I was made to wait an additional 15 minutes in the shop. When my food was finally handed to me, I was shocked to be told that I owed an extra £1.40 instead of receiving the promised reimbursement. Even worse, they refused to take card payments under £5, forcing me to go through the hassle of making a bank transfer for the measly amount. To top it all off, when I got home, the food was incredibly disappointing. It tasted like a supermarket ready meal—certainly not what I expect from a takeaway. This experience was frustrating from start to finish, and I’ll definitely be looking elsewhere for my Indian food in the future. Avoid roots of India if you want good food and decent service.

Very nice and tasty, Chefs special Kebab for starters, and this is why I couldn't give 5 start, ThecOnion Bhaji was very dry and lacked a little taste, We followed up with Chicken Rogan Josh along with Poppadoms and a portion of chips with Egg pilau rice , overall tasty but need work on oOnion Bhaji

Lots of great reviews but to be honest it’s bog standard stuff. Nothing to set it apart from a thousand other curry takeaways except for the fact that it’s the only one in the area.

Absolutely lovely food, we have been on a weekend break and this takeaway was recommended to us, we were advised that It’s so popular that you do have order early. Popped in to check if gluten free was available, guy behind the counter was so helpful and knowledgeable. Ordered our food at 5:00 pm and collected at 5:45 pm, fantastic meal, would highly recommend. We had 3 takeaways from here during our visit to Stanhope Show and we were blown away by every one. Best curry ever. We had a variety of dishes - pathia, dopiaza, chicken mango, korma, bhuna, butter chicken. All lovely, thank you!

We stayed in Stanhope for a week in August and had read about this before we went. The food was lovely, it’s well worth trying.

We had a takeaway from here while staying in Stanhope for 5 nights. I ordered Sag Aloo Delight with vegetable pilau rice. It’s was absolutely delicious, in fact it’s the Best Indian Takeaway I’ve had in last 15 years! I wish I lived a bit closer so I could have one more often. I will definitely order from here again next time I’m in the area. Highly recommended

Another great meal from Roots of India. My wife had her favourite, Chicken Tikka Masala with Mushroom Pilau and I went for the Chicken Pathia, for the first time, with Onion Pilau. We also shared a Peshwari Nan. The Masala got the usual thumbs up and the Pathia was immense with a nice kick! If you like your Indian food give Roots of India a visit when visiting Weardale.

Called in for a takeaway as we usually do when in the area. We weren’t disappointed! All food was delicious and well cooked. The lamb dopiaza is the best I’ve had anywhere, so tasty and the lamb so tender I could cut it with my fork. Highly recommended.

Food is always good however the service is a joke. Last 4 orders ( All pre-ordered) have been minimum 30 minutes late. We have to travel several miles and being messed around spoils the expectation.

The jalfrezi was tasteless and had little spice. The naan bread was genuinely the worst I’ve ever ate, there was no ghee on the naan bread! I’ve had nicer naan bread from Tesco. The worst part was being asked if we needed a plastic bag as the employee said that the brown paper bag often splits. Charging for a plastic bag is unbelievably arrogant.

Fabulous service and food! We ordered by phone and the person taking our order was both warm and helpful. There were plenty of vegan options to choose from and we felt assured we could trust what we were being advised in relation to this. Love the addition of the specials on the menu, giving even greater choice and the chance to try something a bit different. Food was ready on time and collection was again a great experience. Very reasonably priced.

Had food from here twice during our latest stay at Stanhope and it was excellent. Really well cooked, tasty dishes - lamb tikka dupiaza, chicken tikka Rohan josh, chicken Malaya (with mango), and all the side orders. Just lovely food and friendly people. Thank you.

One of the best Indian take aways I have frequented. And the best value. Lovely piping hot food at much lower prices than we pay back home. Run very efficiently. You have to pay in cash.

Staying local on a short break. Ordered curry online earlier in the day, selected a time to pick up. Site was really easy to use. Picked up our food which was ready at the time we chose. Food was piping hot, super fresh and tasted amazing! Far superior to our takeaway we use regularly at home! And that one takes some beating!I tried a dish I’d never tried before and it was lovely! I have eaten Indian, Pakistani and Bangladeshi food in Bradford, Birmingham, Manchester and Newcastle, as well as locally for the last 25-30 years, but I cannot believe I have found the best I have ever eaten in Stanhope. This food is seriously good, great quality ingredients and a spicing I have never experienced before. Cannot believe the quality of the food I have eaten tonight from a takeaway in Weardale. I had a a great take away meal from here 3 yrs ago on a weekend away, came back last year and it was closed, but it was open tonight. I though they couldn’t do it again, they must of fluked it, or my memory was looking through rose tinted spectacles. I was wrong, it was banging, amazing and delicious. I loved it, the chef is a genius and understands spice like I never could. I love the fact that this is not a chain, and not open 24 hours a day 7 days a week. These guys can cook, can’t praise enough. Starters were as light as a feather, mains were just enough oil, not greasy, spicy, but not blow your head off, Chicken was quality and well sourced in my opinion. Might have another tomorrow night. Keep it up. Oh and the attitude to Covid was great, as well as lovely telephone manner and bang on time..

Lovely welcome at this takeaway! Our food was superb! We had wonderful starters followed by three of the best curries we’ve had in a long time. Everything well cooked and seasoned, clearly by a talented chef. We are visitors to the area, and it’s experiences like this that will keep us coming back. We came for the scenery but we’re talking about the food!

We were staying in the area for a few nights and got a take away on our last night. The food was beautiful, my fiancee said it was the best Keema naan she's ever had. We are from South Shields which has a street famous for its currys and this meal was better than any I've eaten there. We will see you again the next time we are in Stanhope.

Roots of India is a fantastic Indian takeaway. I would say price is on the high side for takeaway but don't let this put you off as quality is outstanding.

Absolutely cracking meal, great value and a further plus the shop felt Covid secure with appropriate precautions. What more can you ask for.

I've only lived in weardale for 3 years and this place has almost become a regular weekend event now. We always get the lamb tikka jaipur and it has never disappointed. Fantastic place, fantastic staff and fantastic food. Cant fault the place. Highly recommended.

After recently ordering a takeout meal for myself and partner, we can’t speak highly enough of this establishment. The staff were attentive and knowledgable, advising me to select a dish based on my preferences. They did not disappoint! I tried a chicken Khakri which was medium, saucy and delicious with just a hint of a kick (just what we look for). I requested a cheesy, garlic naan bread which wasn’t on the menu but again, they were happy to accommodate this request also. It was fluffy, light and fresh. Beautiful! I have gone to roots of India multiple times, and would definitely recommend it. the food is delicious and the staff are always lovely and helpful. you can ring in ahead of time and they give you a rough estimate of time when your order is ready. I would definitely recommend.

We visited here and my partner enquired about a curry that he couldn’t see on the menu, we were informed that it was not something they had on the menu but after speaking to the chef he said he could make it for us, he even let us taste it before we bought it to make sure it was exactly what we wanted. The curry (and rest of the meal) was beautiful! And even better that we were able to order exactly what we wanted. I have a peanut allergy and that was no problem either. Beautiful food and lovely, helpful staff!

Been using this curry house for years as we have a caravan in stanhope. Every visit as good as the last. Had nearly everything from the menu and everything is always very tasty and cooked fresh. Have recommended to many people over the years.

Staying in Stanhope for a week's holiday and tried this takeaway on our first night. Excellenty veggie choices for mains, though slightly limited for starters. Biggest onion bhajis ever! Loved everything, ready in half an hour even on a busy Saturday night - and very handy pub next door to have a quick pint while waiting. Hoping to squeeze in another visit before we leave!

What to say. Excellent food, really tasty and good value. Ordered our food and nipped for a quick pint at the nearest inn. Half an hour later, our food was ready and waiting. I like a good Indian, and this did not disappoint at all. Very tasty and there was plenty to eat. We tend to eat half, and save the other half for the night after. All the containers were recyclable, which we are big fans of, so we felt we did our bit for the environment. All in all, Roots of India is highly recommended, our only gripe is it’s too far away from home for us to visit more often!!

On holiday in Stanhope and ordered our tea from here one night. Food was very tasty, the onion bhajis were huge and delicious, and the Kathmandu lamb was a new dish for me which I would like to see in my local Indian takeaway.

I have a caravan nearby and tried this restaurant for the first time last weekend. I can honestly say it was the best Indian food I have ever had. They were friendly, polite and professional. The place was immaculately clean. They will be seeing an awful lot more of me.

Visited Roots of India for the 1st time shameful I know as I only live a few miles away but as they don't deliver I can never be fussed to drive after being out all day. Anyway phoned the order in was told it would be 30mins and for the 1st time ever a takeaway was spot on with their timings. Order Onion Bhajis, Chicken Dupiaza, King Prawn Madras, 2 Pilau and a Garlic & Keema Naan. In almost every other Indian meal we have had it has been really greasy and left a grease lining around the mouth area but not this one it was absolutely delicious in flavour and although it is expected to be a little greasy I can honestly say there was no need to cleanse my lips ! The chicken was well cooked and there was a good helping of it and the sauce was really flavoursome. The Naan was spicy but not overly so (especially as I don't like a lot of spice). The KP Madras for my partner had just the right amount of heat in it and was complemented with the Mango Chutney and there was ample amount of King Prawns which is unusual.Will be revisiting this Indian again soon and would encourage more local people to give them a try.

They are only a village takeaway so requested a bit longer to prepare for five meals. It was worth the wait. The chefs specials were delicious. I would recommend the peshwari naan bread.

I'm a curry snob, brought up in the 2nd Curry capital of the UK - Glasgow. I'm very picky. Been using Roots of India for years and love it. Great little takeaway, hot, fresh food and really friendly and helpful service. Definitely recommend.

After 7.30 p.m. in Stanhope in peak holiday season, this is the only place to get food! An above average Indian takeaway which was a life-saver in this culinary desert. Generous portions and fresh spices used.

To write about food I think you need a yardstick for comparison, in this case I'll use the sit down restaurant that is our 'go to' back home, on the other side of Durham and that's Ashoka in Seaham. Currently it has 4.5 out of 5 after 415 reviews and is number 3 out of 44. So, how does Roots compare? We had a meal for two very fussy eaters last night, one being a vegan and, I can only say – BLOODY MARVELLOUS! The vegan had vegetable karai with vegetable rice and I had tikka chicken jalfrezi, same rice. First the rice, perfectly assembled without too much oil (a pet hate of ours) and very tasty. The vegan wolfed her whole meal last night, I've just had other half of mine for lunch and, as we all know, it tasted even better than the first half. The jalfrezi was as it should be, extremely tasty, bursting with flavour without burning yer gob, unlike some. We are finding that most takeaways are resorting to the same 'runny gravy onion base' and some colouring and cheap flavours but the crew at Roots appear to be preparing their food the old fashioned way and I can only say, keep it up lads, great food and value for money. We'll be back in the area later this year and no doubt we'll be trying another of your fantastic meals.

We enjoyed our dishes from this takeaway - reasonably sized portions, tasty and very enjoyable. Pity they don't offer free poppadums like some other takeaways.

Fancied a quick takeaway while staying nearby. Recommended to this one, we were doubtful as we have some fantastic curry takeaways near us. We were really happy with food the taste was different from the curries near us, slightly fragrant and really yummy. We had chicken & spinach and a bhuna which were both grand. The lady serving was really friendly and helpful. Thanks we really enjoyed well worth a try.

We don’t regularly buy takeaway because we’re usually disappointed but not this time. There is a great choice and ample for vegetarians. The food was delicious; full of flavour and freshness. The vegetables weren’t over cooked and there was a good balance of sauce and vegetables/paneer. I would highly recommend this takeaway which we’ll now regularly visit.
