We found the staff really good, good selection of beers and the atmosphere wasn't bad at all. Now the food we took the 4 starters for £25 the wings were good, the belly pork chunks not bad either, I don't think if we went back we would order the shrimp or the fish cakes a bit bland. Main courses were belly pork, chicken thighs and butterflied breast of chicken..all ok but a bit lack luster! You would have thought that there would be a selection of fish dishes such as jerk fish, snapper etc.

Visited on a couple of occasions, both walking bookings, very accommodating, welcoming and attentive throughout. Food just like the service was amazing, the draft beer, cocktails and Sunday lunch sharing platter particular. Thank you to all concerned. Highly recommended.

Arrived on Saturday teatime ordered cocktails and drinks which was very nice very quick service was good good music then we ordered our food curry was absolutely amazing chicken wings and the ribs was to die for the staff was very good. I would recommend to come here for drinks and food

I went with my wife, daughter, and FIL for fathers Day. The food was lovely but it was more of a nightclub than a restaurant, the music was deafening and we couldn't have a conversation without shouting at each other. I asked them to turn it down as it was hurting my daughters ears but it wasn't turned down much. I'll go back but for drinks only.

Had a lovely meal here with my family. The two male bar staff/waiters were so friendly and helpful. The food was really good. Cocktails very nice and reasonably priced. The only thing I didn’t like was the barmaid/waitress vaping whilst stood working at the bar! Surely people should go outside to vape. Will definitely return though as overall a lovely experience.

Not too bad but not good. Staff spent their time talking with each other but suddenly lost their tongue when interacting with customers. Music ignoring unless your idea of reggae is Red Red Wine on repeat. One dish tasted vile, others reasonable. Crap atmosphere. Very inauthentic vibe. Needs some life breathed into it.

Midweek dinner for two. Very quiet, warm & friendly welcome, good music. Interesting menu - lamb patties, goat curry with rice & beans and ox-tail were all delicious. Relaxed, unhurried service.

Enjoyed our 2 visits here. Good atmosphere, friendly staff and generous portions of tasty Caribbean food. Would recommend.

Booked for a Sunday afternoon, couple of weeks ago. Recommended to us, and , I have to say, it was very good! Good choice of food - we had coconut shrimp (which were huge) and patties to start, followed by jerk chicken & goat curry. Great portion sizes, all cooked perfectly. Good atmosphere and helpful staff. Will definitely return.

Absolutely adore this place and would recommend to any one visiting Hull. Obviously you need to appreciate the food, which is, in my experience, very tender and kicks with flavour. The goat curry is awesome as are the wings and ribs. Plentiful sides too. Turtle Bay doesn’t come close ! You can actually taste the cocktails and would highly recommend the Reggae Rum Punch or the awesome Zombie. Their delivery service is excellent too! Can’t rate them any higher ❤️

Well, it was open for a lunch on a Sunday so we gave it a try. The attempt at authenticity with the tables did not inspire a feeling of good hygiene. I was told by the waitress that they did not have any bo-ols of wa-er.......just tap wa-er. The tap wa-er arrived with ice which was neither asked for nor wanted. Starters were OK but the chips which came with the main course were saturated in an excess of salt.....hardly good for an elderly customer. Sadly, the restaurant did not serve any desserts. Would we go again? Not on your life!

Always amazing, food portions are massive never been disappointed with delivery or in restaurant service. Cocktails are to die for! Great atmosphere as well.

Eaten here on several occasions and always been superb. Today we decided on a takeaway. 100% from start to finish. The Reggae Platter was awesome. The meat fell off the bone. Decent salad, spicy chips, rice with spring onion AND the Zombies were to die for. Best cocktails in Hull.

Just visited Roots on Newland Avenue for our Sunday dinner. Pleasant staff. Wasn't waiting too long for food. The roast pork dinner was absolutly beautiful. Atmosphere was great.

Called up to tell them my 15 year old son and his friend are both being served in there with fake ids they said they couldn’t do anything about it. How about not serving them? I gave them a full description of him and his friend! Fuming!! Now I’ll have to go sort it myself. Ridiculous!

Amazing value and superb tasty food. The gravy, puds and roasties were brilliant and the meat, chicken and pork, very tender. Loads of veg and 2 types of mash. Add to that the amazing cocktails and it’s a winner. Highly recommend the Reggae Rum Punch or the totally awesome Caribbean Porn Star Martini 😊👍🏼

We were looking for something different to eat and this place was recommended. The food came quick and filled us up. Food was nice and reasonably priced. The stand out for all of us was the sweet potato fries. I'm not really a carb person but these were delicious. Cocktails weren't up to much, the zombie I had tasted a little petrolly. £68 for 4 people with 2 cocktails.

Went to Roots for a belated Grandson's birthday. Have been before so we knew what to expect. Place is always alive with music and because I'm thinking it was Wednesday and raining it was pretty full but not over crowded. However there was a great atmosphere as usual. The staff was attentive but not too over powering. The food is good, cocktails to die for. Say no more.

Been before a few times to have cocktails which are lovely but when me and my friend went for food it was absolutely vile to the point we couldn’t eat much of it. We aren’t ones to leave food when paying that much and we aren’t picky eaters but honestly that food was a joke. Imagine charging a tenner for a bit of microwave rice, some salad and then god knows what that sauce was but it certainly wasn’t edible. £6 for the small bites and trust me the name represents it well seen as you only get 3 shrimps, very disappointed with both the food and customer service. We kept getting rushed to order as if he had better things to do than be working which isn’t our fault.

The menu is very select, I eat most things however this menu is extremely select. My friend got ribs and I got chicken which I would normally like however my friends food was okay (she said she wouldnt recommend nor oppose) and I didnt eat even a quarter. When I brought up a problem they didnt offer any alternative even though I'd barely taken 2 bites. Charged us both full price even though we both raised issue half way through and ate less than half. The drinks are very nice and tastefull and would definitely would recommend, only on the fact you dont get food.

Visited Roots again and the food was better than last time,staff friendly and wanting to help,service is great ,once you have ordered food comes quickly its hot and well presented.

This place is an absolute disgrace to caribbean food. If you’ve never had it before then you may think it’s good but it’s not authentic. I had the curry goat and it was awful, barely any meat, bony and no flavour, it was really bland. I also had the festivals- hard and just unenjoyable. The cocktails aren’t that great either, they’re either really watered down or really strong. If you want authentic caribbean food then this isn’t the place.

Seriously, nothing to fault at all with this resturant, come here all the time! Staff are polite and very attentive. If you love carribean food i recommend this place!

I like the bar but OMG the toilets. They're like a stinking corner of the park where alcoholics gather. The repungent smell of amonia really did make my eyes water.

I’ve enjoyed coming here for a few years now.. foods not authentic but I still love it, Santiago chicken is my favourite and the cocktails and Redstripe are a bonus. HOWEVER I’ve grown tired of the managers grumpiness every time I go in. He genuinely seems annoyed having customers in and it puts me off spending my money in there. Shame.

We had heard about the cocktails here and wanted to try the food as well. We were there on a Tuesday evening which is 2 for 1 cocktails all night - bonus! It was a really good atmosphere, even though it y very busy. The staff are very friendly and so the service was good. The food was great - the menu is very unique and interesting. Most dishes were spicy, with a kick! Thanks for having us, I’m sure we’ll be back soon!

Groups of intimidating youths sat outside on arrival, group of young girls sat inside filling their drinks from their own vodka bottle. Staff & manager sat with both groups at various points of our stay and fully aware what was going on with the vodka, finding it hilarious that the girls were so drunk so early on in the evening.

The food is amazing.The staff are great and very efficient and helpful. Great value for money and cocktails are great.

I can’t believe these guys get away with such shocking food. We ordered take away from here. I ordered using the menu online, worked out the price to be just over £26. When I went to collect my meal, the price was £33.15? £7 for two pasties! Don’t even get me started on the main meal. We ordered a Veg roti and a Trinidadian jerk chicken roti, it was literally a cheap wrap some veggies and a sweet sickly sauce that was similar to BBQ. The rice was ok, very dry and lacking in flavour. The dumplings were dreadful and the plaintain was ok. The salad looked awful. The only thing that was nice was the sweet potato fries and for £3.75, You’d expect them to be.

Having been out all day we didn’t want to cook so found ourselves on Newland ave looking for inspiration.

The cocktails here are amazing! They're ever so slightly cheaper than most other places nearby but are so much better. Having said that, they are still expensive. Staff are friendly and the place has a fantastic atmosphere. Decor is great too. Just a fab place!

We stopped here for food, early evening on a Saturday and were seated upstairs, as the bar was getting busy. Service was great and the food was delicious. Lively atmosphere downstairs, but in a good way!

This was our second visit to Roots, this time with some family & friends.

Although the place looks superficially great with it's Jamaican shack feel, reggae music and cocktails, it all pales into insignificance when it comes to it's dining experience.

This place is meant to be great for cocktails but to be honest they’re not nice from here and when you watch them being made they are clumsily our together i could do a better job at home. If you’re really after a good cocktail on Newland avenue levels is the place to go. So much nicer and for the same price.

Visited on a busy Friday evening! No reservation needed which was a bonus. Basic Jamaican style restaurant shack style. Waitresses were attentive quick and efficient.

Came for a work meal i got the goat curry it was really nice however i spent alot of the time picking the bones out of the meal ;/ The cocktails are good however alot of ice in them for the price! But they use cheap rola cola which is awful on its own! All round good but i wouldnt eat there again.

Ordered two meals with drinks for tea (dinner). Both meals came pretty quick. my shrimp wrap was a little tough but tasty. Ts veggie wrap was also good. Minor gripe is that order was mixed up and T nearly had fish. Good value

Had the delicious Jerk shrimp, succulent king prawns in a creamy sauce with a kick and then the Bobs Mix it up of jerk chicken and ribs, fantastic Jamaican food matched by wonderfully friendly Hull service. Washed down with a very tasty Raspberry debonair, highly recommend

After hearing great reviews about this place I was excited to try it out but unfortunately left feeling very disappointed. I ordered the arawak chicken which came in a very bland sauce and overcooked sweet potato fries which you have to pay extra for. The soft drinks are very over priced at £2.50 each. I left feeling like I'd wasted £15 to be honest. The decor is great and it is a nice place but the food did not meet my expectations and I wouldn't eat there again.

14 of went here for my nieces birthday.we were seated upstairs and our waitress was friendly and attentive. It seemed if you didn’t want a cocktail there wasn’t a lot of choice to drink,the beer was off so cider or lager.not good for a Saturday night,not all of us like cocktails .the food was nice enough.i had a veggi curry,it did say served with rice and peas but they looked suspiciously like kidney beans to me, but it didn’t matter.didnt try a dessert as we had birthday cake,enjoyed the night and the waitress was lovely .dont know if I’ll go back,not really my sort of thing but that’s just personal preference.

We went to celebrate our 33rd wedding anniversary so we wanted a special meal, as normal we had another fantastic meal in this wonderful restaurant.

Just visited tonight. Great setting,good location, brilliant cocktail options. Starters where fantastic and set the scene for a great evening. Mains then arrive and one was stone cold! I would add the restaurant was not busy with only 4 other diners. It was acknowledged and was advised a new main meal would be prepared. During this time I had finished my main and was left eating alone.once I finished, my wife's meal had arrived. With an apology for the initial error but our evening out was spoilt by this. When the replacement main came my wife didn't no longer fell like eating as once again she would be eating alone. It's fair to say the we choose to eat out as a treat. You want to eat together and share experiances. This wasn't an option for us. The main was taken off the bill without request but nothing additional was offered in a way of an apology. Was advised that the manager would be informed but he was too busy entertaining his friends at the bar! It's a Shame as the food I ate was fantastic. The guys looking after us where great and always at hand to offer service. Please don't be put off by this review try it for yourself. Could have just been a bad night!

I adore this place for food or just a cheeky cocktail!

the table was booked in advance for a birthday ..only 6 people . We were sat downstairs which unfortunately was very cold and draughty and the noise level quite high . After we'd waited for about an hour , I called over the waitress and very politely asked her if she knew when our food was likely to arrive as we'd been waiting for nearly an hour . About 5 minutes later a manager arrived waving a chitty in his hand , telling us we hadn't been waiting an hour it had only been 50 minutes ..when my friend said he'd actually checked the time when we ordered , the manager then said he didn't think it would have taken his waitress 10 minutes to put the order through ..but he wasn't going to argue about it !! ( the only one arguing was him) ..then he said how busy it was and our food would be about 5 minutes ...no apology for our wait . food was adequate .

Visited with high expectations after hearing many good things but was left feeling very disappointed, the food was what can only be described a bland and very poorly presented, pretty much slung on the plate with no care and was barely warm, the one thing that saved the evening was the great selection of cocktails which pulled the night around as I needed quite a few to be brave enough to eat what was put in front of me, they may have been having a off night but it will be drinks only for me next time,

Thoroughly enjoyed my visit this evening. Lots of lovely options on the menu but settled for a sharing platter. Yummy! Also tasted the goat curry which melted in your mouth. Great choice of cocktails and I opted for the Bramble which I really enjoyed. Hoping for a return visit.

Had my Hen night here last Saturday and it was absolutely fantastic. A MASSIVE thank you to all the staff they could not do enough for us all. There was 20 of us and I couldn't of asked for a better night. The food was gorgeous and all served at once. Lovely atmosphere. Gorgeous food and fantastic company. What more can a girl ask for. Be prepared to spend there more time then you planned, amazing cocktails and food, laid back staff, good music. Ribs out of this world so was chicken

I'm quite picky when it comes to ribs, as I've had far too many bad experiences but the ribs at Roots are amazing! I went for the rib and chicken combo which was great and really filling but next time I'm going to go for just the ribs as they are delicious! The cocktails are great too!

Busy Saturday late afternoon, some families still in. Not sure I’d eat there any later as looks like there is space kept for a good bar crowd, but it’s great you can move onto cocktails or their incredible rum menu. Menu was quite varied, the patties were lovely and both our mains well presented and very enjoyable. All in all I would eat there again.

With my partner been a vegetarian there was plenty on the menu to choose from we both had a roti. Overall we enjoyed it and thought it was reasonably priced.

We love eating out as a family. We probably do it far too often. This visit was a bit of a whim on a school night, and didn't even know we were going there. Got to Beverley, and then started looking for somewhere that seems to have closed. Then found this place during our search. Wow, really pleased we found it. Got to try lots of different things, most of which husband and I have had while living in Manchester, but kids hadn't had before. We have one adventurous eating son, and an uber fussy 5 year old daughter. We often assume when we arrive for a meal out that she'll hardly eat anything aside from fries, maybe we'll find macaroni cheese. She doesn't even eat burgers!!! But she picked at various things like we all did. Definitely want to go back, but we like to keep trying new places, so not sure when it'll be.....next time we have an after school whim to eat out maybe??

We came here as a large group on an impromptu evening out.We were given the largest table to accommodate the group, and menus for food.The atmosphere was lovely but not overbearing. The drinks were great (we opted for cocktails) and the food was good value and huge portions.If I'm in the area again I will definitely be revisiting.

Just ordered our first takeaway from roots and what a joke. Within 5 minutes of it been delivered we rang up and asked for it to be picked back up. The chips was soggy, the goats curry had no meat and all bone and potato in it, the shrimp dish wasn't shrimp it was prawns and the Luke warm sauce was all over the salad. The portions for the price was a piss take. Won't be ordering again. If you can't cope with been a busy restaurant and takeaway don't have both.

I had some really delicious food here, ribs and jerk chicken. The staff was very friendly and efficient despite a big number of people (on a Friday night)

2 for 1 on selected cocktails. We went on a tuesday afternoon and it was quiet. Only a few other customers in. Inside and outside seating available. Chilled atmosphere. Good reggae playlist. Staff was nice. Can't comment on the food as we didn't have any but I heard and read it's cheaper during the day and it can get easily packed on a night! Would deffo come again and the cocktails are delish! And good value for money I think!

Great food, even better cocktails ! The zombie is a must try for any rum or alcohol enthusiast! Would recommend Roots to any person heading to hull !
