Ristorante Sergio in Cheshire West and Chester

After reviewing possible Italian restaurants on Google Maps, we decided Ristorante Sergio looked to be just what we wanted. Unfortunately, the directions were less than exact and we walked past the restaurant on the Cathedral side without realising! The entrance is hidden away on the other side of the building. The place was busy with an excited buzz. We had not been able to make a reservation and waited for a short while for a table to become vacant, unusually being given a menu to browse while waiting. More restaurants should do this! Our meal was quickly served, hot and delicious! Thanks to Salvio and the staff for an unexpected delightful evening.

What a great little place to find on our trip to Chester. The place is amazing, great food, great atmosphere friendly staff. And good prices on the fresh food. Highly recommended 👌 Sorry about the pic. The food was so good. I forgot to take a pic opps 😅

Sergio's was an okay experience and by no means bad, but for us, it didn't live up to the expectations we'd received. We found the food to be quite bland and generally average but the portion size was good. The atmosphere was fine but was quite loud, which made it a little harder to converse. The service was quick but we did have quite an overbearing waiter, who made some strange comments to us about a few things. I was happy enough with our meal out here but wasn't impressed and it's not a place I'd revisit, especially after going to another Italian a few days prior which was far superior. Good, but not great.

The best Italian on the planet. Always amazing food. Great atmosphere and awesome when bossman makes an appearance. Been going here most of my life and it's always amazing.

We visited the restaurant based on its good reviews, but left somewhat disappointed. We ordered a carbonara and the Fenomeno pizza. What surprised us most was that the carbonara was made with cream and the pasta was overcooked. Being an Italian restaurant, we expected a more traditional and well-executed recipe. On top of that, the sauce was very bland; the cream completely overshadowed what you would expect from a good carbonara — the richness of the guanciale, the flavor of the cheese, and the creaminess that should come from the egg yolk. It lacked the depth and balance you’d hope for in such a classic dish. The pizza also fell flat. The dough was soft and lacked character, and the overall flavor was bland. It’s not enough for it to be baked correctly; good dough is recognized by its texture, taste, and how it supports the rest of the ingredients. In this case, it simply didn’t deliver. As for the service, it was friendly but somewhat disorganized. We waited quite a while to be attended to, even though other tables that arrived later were served before us. We also asked about another pizza on the menu, and the waiter wasn’t able to give us any information beyond what was already written on the menu. A bit more detail or honesty would have been appreciated. I want to make clear that my intention is not to criticize for the sake of it, but to offer an honest and constructive opinion. Italian cuisine is widely loved and respected, and I believe there is room for improvement — especially in taking care of the basics: pasta, dough, and traditional recipes, which, while simple, deserve to be done well.

Let vely evening with friends. Carbonara deleted vious but so much of it I couldn't finish it!

Great food,however told dish came with vegetables,not sure one grilled tomato and a mushroom constitute with vegetables. Service was quick,friendly,lovely atmosphere. Very authentically Italian.Would definitely go again.But would order a side dish of vegetables 😀

Booked a table for 2, several days in advance for a pre show meal at the cathedral, booked table for 17:45, left restaurant 40 minutes later after not being seated, other couples that had arrived some time after us were seated before us, we informed the restaurant we were due to attend a show and were just told they would seat us soon, I understand it was Chester races and was extremely busy but they were still accepting customers without informing them of the delay, extremely disappointed

Reliable Chester favourite trattoria serving up traditional and uncomplicated Italian fare. Reasonably priced dishes. Valpolicella Classico by the bottle was a hit.

Very disappointing. Was recommended by local walking tour guide, so expected better. Chicken with white wine and prawns - overcooked flavourless chicken, with underseasoned tasteless sauce, plus soggy overcooked vegetables. Partner had pasta with tomato overwhelming the taste of the other ingredients in the sauce. Won't be back.

I used to frequent Sergio's when it was Mamma Mia (some 40 years ago), and I'm delighted that the Pizza and Scampi dishes were absolutely delicious then, as they are now. Best Pizza in Chester, hands down.

Been here before years ago and liked it so came back. And pleased I did as very good all around. Huge menu and reasonable prices, friendly staff although if not busy they didn't seem organized as got asked 3 times if I wanted a drink. Food came out very quick and quite tasty and big portion. Even though not busy it was quite loud with the tile floors, not a cozy romantic place for dinner. Had good wifi when found the password. So would recommend and come back next time here

Very friendly, smiling staff, extremely attentitive, and most importantly, fantastic food and wine. BBQ ribs to start, pizza main and a large glass of sauvignon blanc were all excellent. Bill £38. I would return no problem.

I didn't rate the food. The pasta dish was average, and the dessert average, too. It wouldn't b my choice to visit this restaurant again. Sorry.

I had the bruschetta which was bland, then I had the chicken which was completely dry. This is my personal view on this place. Not happy.

Truly one of the most awful restaurants, Italian or otherwise, I've ever visited in my long life. It was recommended by a friend of my cousin I haven't seen for years, who my wife and I met there. I had cannelloni which was only recognisable as such by its name. I'm guessing it was cooked weeks or months ago and heated up in the microwave; a dried up dish of soggy cardboard that I only ate so as not to upset my cousin. And the noise of this place! I ended up with a sore throat after shouting at each other to be heard. It's all because of the hard surfaces - tiles on the walls and floor - and the proximity of the tables. I can only assume the clientele, mostly young people, come here for a laugh - there were two birthdays - and sadly have no concept of what good Italian food is like. A truly awful experience.

2nd visit to Sergios and would definitely return again if I'm ever back in Chester

We had such a wonderful meal at Ristorante Sergio. The service was warm, efficient and fun and all the food was delicious. We started by sharing a tomato, Basil and oregano bruchetta which was perfectly seasoned with lovely hints of garlic and oil. I had the tagliolini mare e Monti (pasta with scampi, bacon and onion, finished with tomato, cream and brandy) and my husband had penne Amatriciana (penne with tomato, smoky pork cheek and chilli). Both pasta dishes were superb and we also ordered a simple but excellent rocket and Parmesan salad. The house wine was tasty and generously sized and we just had room for one of the best affogato I have ever had. The only minor quibble, which wasn't a problem for us, but might be for other diners, is that the restaurant is quite noisy. Just something to be aware of if taking people who are hard of hearing, or sensitive to noise.

Had a lovely dinner here this evening. The staff were fantastic and the food was nice. We especially liked the tiramisu!

The best Italian restaurant in Chester! First time I came here, I had the Margarita pizza, it was cooked to perfection. Today, I had the lasagne, it was without a doubt, the best lasagne I have ever tasted! If you’re in Chester and want to taste genuine Italian food, go to Sergio’s, 11/10 would recommend to anyone❤️

6pm Tuesday evening and it was getting full, which kind of says it all. Pizza and lamb cutlets were very good and value for money. Would definitely recommend.

We had a wonderful meal. The midweek lunch deal 2 courses for £14.50 was Brilliant value for money, food was fantastic.

I've never understood the attraction of Sergio's. Of all the places to eat, why walk down a grotty side street between bins and cars to get to a restaurant...but I didn't book it so let's give it a go. Let's not be put off by being ignored as you walk in and let's just wait to see if someone acknowledges us...ah we are not invisible! I understand being asked "have you booked?" and "what name?" but not so sure I understand "what time have you booked for?" (shouldn't they know that!) or just being left stood not knowing what's going on while they then move on to other people to ask the same questions. So even though a table has been booked it appears we just stand here and wait for one to become available! The menu is quite extensive but amazingly somehow also uninspiring, I was also surprised to see the only draught offering was Stella, at £5 a pint (£5 for a pint of Stella!) or you could have a 330ml bottle of decent beer for £6! Wine by the glass? Not really unless you want house wine. Conversation? Not really, it's noisy and you're packed that tightly you may as well be sat on the same table so unless you want to shout you're out of luck. We didn't stay to sample the food so I can't rate that, 10 minutes of trying to find something on the menu worth staying for without so much of a "can I get you an overpriced drink" and we decided to free up our table. Unfortunately that was long enough to come out stinking of food, but at least we got off to another one of Chester's Italian restaurants and enjoyed fantastic food and wine.

We're regulars in Sergio's and we must have been 8/9 times in the last 6 months. Best Italian by far, service is excellent, food is served quickly and staff are always happy to see you. We haven't had one thing from the menu that wasn't brilliant and we try something different each time. 10/10 I tell everyone I can about the place.

Very much Italian. We wandered in to see if they could accommodate us. Was no bother at. We shared a cheese garlic bread (a starter of epicness) and the mains were a calzone and a carbonara. Both very nice. We had a few drinks and was wonderful.

The best Italian in Chester! Amazing food and lovely staff! We had lasagna for starter which was fantastic. For mains, we had pizza polo and calzone, both super tasty and delicious! Good price, good quality, good service, it’s a must-go!!

Food let it down slightly this time, pasta was just really heavy and soggy. Garlic pizza was just solid with the same cheese no real flavour to it. I'd go back but I just seem to be getting some bad luck here

Always a pleasure to visit, it was busy this weekend, so stagg a little harassed, but the meal, and the enjoyment was still a worthwhile visit.

I can't actually comment on any of the categories above as we didn't get through the doors of the restaurant. I booked a table for lunch on my husbands' birthday, 13th Feb, at 2.45pm. As we approached the door, a gentleman told us that we were too late to eat as the restaurant closes at 3.00pm,and reopens at 5.00pm. My advice to anyone is ,don't use their online booking system. We were offered a table at 2.45pm,and told that we would need to vacate it at 4.15 pm. We were also sent a reminder of our booking. My first recourse was to email the restaurant but as I have had no response all that I can do is post this review.

Amazing food, cooked perfectly. The starters are light and refreshing and the mains are beautiful. Service was fast and all the staff are great. Really fair pricing at £14.50 per person for a starter and a main at lunchtime - definitely come here if you're in town!

Struggling for somewhere to eat and walking down St.Werburgh street the smells coming from this place are unreal, popped in for a cheese and garlic bread to take away and they did not disappoint, would recommend this place 10/10 friendly staff quick service and amazing tasty food. I will be back

A real Italian restaurant, the pasta is good but the best thing is the pizza. I recommend a delicious calzone. Friendly waiters. The prices are of a classic Italian restaurant in England.

Came for my birthday meal, and the owner and younger lad was amazing! Brilliant conversations and incredible food. Proper authentic food, will 100% be returning!

We came for early lunch without booking, we were lucky we got a table. We had the set lunch, my tuna was cooked as I wanted (rare). We will definitely be coming back. The owner and team are Italian, so authentic Italian food! Their Affogato is to die for！

Can never stop talking about the quality of the food was it the Risotto or the seafood pasta, everything tasted fresh. The team is great, the South American chap was very friendly and prompt, he made sure our little one gets just after a prolonged period of wait for our delicious dessert that he doubled her gelato. Only down side it can get very warm, just be careful where you get seated.

55 years of trading. Fantastic authentic Italian food and wine. Great restaurant in the heart of Chester. Friendly and attentive staff. However the toilets are very dated and grubby and badly in need of a refurbishment. Come on owners you are doing the restaurant a disservice. The horrible yellow that is dirty and scuffed and old fashioned come on! Give the toilets a makeover they deserve 🙏🇮🇹❤️

Top quality food here, steak was fantastic.

This is allways my go to restaurant in Chester but on my last visit the food was terrible mussels served closed main courses were cold the fillet steak was the smallest fillet I’ve ever seen no potatoes or fries with mains the waiter was useless so guys don’t bother on a busy sitting because they don’t cars

Booked for my step daughters birthday on Christmas eve, the food was lovely as was most of the staff, the atmosphere was fantastic. The only thing that spoilt it was the rude waitress who was ignorant and very rude, anybody would think we'd asked her to pay the bill, she needs to change her job.

Alessandro is hands down the best waiter I’ve ever met! His energy, charm, and knowledge of the menu were next level. He doesn’t just serve – he sells the entire restaurant experience. If you’re lucky enough to have Alessandro take care of you, you’re in for a treat. 10/10, I’ll definitely be coming back!

Really disappointed with this place what such high expectations 😔. The staff were so attentive and very lovely but unfortunately the food and atmosphere was not up to the same level. My pizza was like chewing gum, couldn’t swallow the cheese, and the pasta was very watery and almost broth-like. Very loud, cramped and overstimulating layout-definitely too many tables and people rammed in at once. Unfortunately will not be recommending or returning any time soon. Such a shame as staff are very funny and attentive but hopefully they can improve☺️.

Lovely staff with Italian hospitality Pork ribs with perfect barbecue sauce so tenderlicious Pizza is the bomb with all meat and all cheese mix with simple olive oil and greens to cut the fat Tiramisu a very delicious sweet treat to end the full meal Would come back again

Had a lovely 3 course meal, we also consumed 3 bottles of wine and enjoyed a lovely family meal while we were there. It was only half an hour after the meal that the experience was tainted. While having a drink in a bar around the corner the manager of Sergios phoned my daughter as she had made the booking. He accused us of not fully paying our bill? This had my daughter very confused and embarrassed as she had made the invitations as a meeting of the parents for the first time for her and her boyfriend. After her boyfriend then explained over the phone that the bill total had been equally split 3 ways, the managers response was to resort to taking the money from the waiters. I had checked my online banking, no issues, daughters boyfriend checked his, payment was made, and his father even had the receipt with all the items we had consumed listed (as we thought they were trying to say we hadn't paid for items not listed) plus the 25% service charge. End of call, no faults on our behalf and not a word of apology or follow up call to say they had checked and found all to be correct. We certainly won't be dining there again.

The one star is for the free Limoncello which was the only good thing about Sergio's. Terrible service, substandard food, unfriendly atmosphere. I feel like iv been robbed worse italy iv ever been to. Will never return.

We had booked a table for a late lunch today, arrived on time, waited 6 minutes to be seated whilst the gentleman behind the bar flirted. He then sat us down banged the menus down and walked away without saying a thing. We left. Had a lovely Thai instead.

Booked this place for my wife's birthday as I'd heard good things about this place, it did not disappoint, great service throughout, great food and excellent atmosphere. Definitely have to come back to this place to try out more of the food. If you like Italian food, then this place is a great spot to dine at.

We waited for 50 minutes for a table. Both people that came before us and after us got seated before us even though they didn’t have reservations as well. We were unwelcome because we had a child and I’m wearing a hejab. I donot recommend this restaurant to anyone as I’m coming to enjoy a meal not to waste my time and be disrespected

I had a bad experience with this restaurant, especially the restaurant manager, because he does not respect the customer. I do not advise anyone to visit him, especially since the restaurant manager was racist in his dealings with me.

We went on Tuesday evening. It was very busy, the staff & service was lovely. We did have starters but I forgot to take photos of them. It’s the best Veal Milanese & pasta I have eaten in years. It was piping hot as well. My partner enjoyed his lamb chops. Another wonderful dining experience for us….. will definitely be back!

Visited off the cuff on a Saturday afternoon, able to seat us straight away. Service was great, food was quickly delivered, piping hot and delicious . Reasonably priced. Note 7% tip is automatically added to the bill.

Don’t waste your time going here!!! Food is absolutely disgusting, both mine and my partners food was foul, I understand that it was busy but we had booked in advance and were practically pushed out the restaurant. Pasta was watery, bland and was the worst dish i’ve had out before Asked for a jug of water for the table and practically got two shot glasses of water , asked for another drink and didn’t come and then after we paid we got chased out the door because they missed 39p off the total bill I mean what a joke! I wouldn’t recommend wasting your time nor your money here as both the service and food were both awful, i’d sooner go to the other Italian restaurants that are actually good in the area.

My mum came here first with work friends and loved it. She got the 2 course offer, portions were smaller and everything was super tasty. Went back with myself but missed the 2 course offer so we opted for a starter each and to share a main. Mum got the Italian meats which for a starter was too big, way too salty, the parma/serrano ham was so thick (she got this last time and it was perfect) I got the calamari which was just inedible, the coating was a mix between breaded and battered, the squid was thin and bland. We mentioned this when our plates were cleared, the manager asked what I meant by bland and I replied no flavour. He didn't say anything just took the plate and walked away, he did take it off the bill. But no apology, no conversation, nothing. From someone who's always worked hospitality, this wasn't the way to go about it. Can't say I'll be going back but if you do decide to go, the 2 course lunch deal seems to be a lot better

Waited an hour between starter and main course, and had to ask for the main. When it came, one of the meals was cold and had to be replaced. That said the rest of the food was good

Recommended by our professor. It's amazing! Excellent food and service. Large portions with reasonable prices. The food took about 20 mins to come. Zucchine Ripiene was super warm and tender. Roasted courgette filled and topped with different cheeses. The sauce was light but really good. Tagliolini Mare e Monti blended the taste of mushroom, scampi, cream and tomato perfectly together. Could be better if a bit less salty. Tiramisu was soft and mild - just about the right. Really love the mascarpone cheese!

Party of 4, each had a 3 course meal. Bruschetta could be improved, seemed like a slice of bread with a topping placed on top. Garlic mushrooms were decent, mussels close to overdone but edible. Pizza was very nice, pasta dish was good and plentiful. Desserts were good. Atmosphere was loud, but then again, a full restaurant is a good sign. I did witness a male waiter wiper his nose with his hand, then handle someones glass at the bar. If I hadn't have seen it, it would have been an issue. I would recommend as we did all enjoyed the food and the two bottles of house white mine. We would likely visit again.
